MDC-T Break-away group, led by Elias Mudzuri and other suspended members, has said the party led by Senator Douglas Mwonzora currently does not have the capacity to rebuild Zimbabwe.
The group made the remarks during a press conference held in Harare on Thursday 02 February 2023. Said the group:

We do not think that we do have a party that can actually do the job for us to bring true liberation to Zimbabweans who are suffering, you know economic problems we are facing.
</blockquote>
The group said there is a need for the opposition MDC-T to reorganise and restructure and put the right people for the right decisions to be made.
The break-away party consists of Mudzuri, Norest Marara, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gift_Konjana">Gift Konjana</a>, John Nyika, Den Moyo, Edwin Dzambara, and Edwin Kakora who were suspended from the MDC-T last month allegedly for breaking party rules, having illegal meetings, and undermining the democratic procedures of the organisation.
Following the suspension, Mudzuri <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/mudzuri-vows-to-resist-expulsion-from-mdc-t/">vowed to resist expulsion</a> saying Mwonzora can only expel him on paper.
There has been a leadership crisis in the MDC-T since the 26 March 2022 by-elections in which the party did not win a single seat.
Some members of the MDC-T blame leader Senator Douglas Mwonzora for the loss and they hoped he would be replaced during the party’s <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/mdc-holds-5th-ordinary-congress/">5th Ordinary Congress</a> held at the City Sports Centre in Harare on Sunday, 18 December 2022. 
However, the MDC-T endorsed Mwonzora as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.
Mudzuri and colleagues say the congress must be declared null and void because Mwonzora did not follow due process.

MDC-T Break-away Group: "Our Party Currently Doesn't Have Capacity To Rebuild Zimbabwe"

The MDC youth wing says it is targetting to win 66% of the votes in the upcoming 2023 general elections.
Newly-elected youth chairperson, Albert Chidhakwa, told journalists on Sunday in Harare that they will encourage the youths to register to vote. Said Chidhakwa:

We are preparing for next year’s polls. We do not have time to waste, we will mobilise young people in all provinces.
We will be doing mass mobilisations to make sure everyone joins our party and is registered to vote.
As the youths, we are campaigning for our president who is none other than Douglas Togarasei Mwonzora and we are targeting 66% of the votes.

Last month, party leader Douglas Mwonzora was controversially nominated as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.
Another Mwonzora supporter, told NewZimbabwe.com, that unlike the MDC’s main rival, CCC, the party was able to successfully hold an ordinary congress. He said:

No one was stopped from contesting Mwonzora. Every position was open to everybody regardless of age or gender. Dhagi ndochibaba hapana zvatingaite ndozviripo. 
After the death or incapacitation of the President, we go for an early ordinary congress.
Now, this is a full congress which is done after every five years, unlike CCC. They do not have a congress, constitution, or structures, so it is different from CCC and ZANU PF.
I know this because I am a Zimbabwean politician, I follow politics and eat politics every day.

"MDC Youths Targetting 66% Of Votes In 2023"

The MDC has endorsed its president Douglas Mwonzora as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.
The opposition party held its 5th Ordinary Congress at the City Sports Centre in Harare on Sunday, 18 December where a resolution by the party to nominate Mwonzora as the sole presidential candidate was confirmed.
Speaking at the congress, Mwonzora said MDC remains strong despite what he called false propaganda which was meant to destroy. He said:
<blockquote>
As we begin 2023, we will begin a candidate selection programme, we are no longer like other parties where leaders just appoint candidates, ours will be chosen by the people through voting.
We are going to do an aggressive mobilisation for the party. All the top leaders you see are first going to their villages where they come from and mobilise from there.
I do not want to see a leader at the Harvest House, I want to see the leader on the ground, iwe neni tine basa.
I know, we know, they know that the MDC is a surprising party, and it will achieve. For over two years, we were subjected to a lot of false propaganda meant to split and destroy our party and leadership.
Today the MDC is standing on two feet, no amount of propaganda or hate language, or falsehoods can defeat an idea whose hour has come.

MDC Holds 5th Ordinary Congress

With only two before the MDC-T holds its 5th Ordinary Congress, the party’s deputy president Elias Mudzuri insists that he will not contest for any position. The party’s ordinary congress is set for 18 December 2022.
Mudzuri was reportedly planning to challenge party president Douglas Mwonzora before the latter was in November unanimously nominated as the sole presidential candidate at the party’s 5th Ordinary Congress. <a href="https://twitter.com/EngMudzuri/status/1603421396956508161">In a Twitter post</a> on Thursday, 15 December, Mudzuri said:

Let me reiterate what I stated earlier. I will not stand for any position at the 18 December MDC Congress.
I will only participate in a process where the branches, wards, districts, and provinces are involved by exercising their constitutional right to choose their leaders.
</blockquote>
Earlier this month, Mudzuri said that he will not be contesting for any post at the congress citing irregularities in the party’s electoral processes.
Speaking to <a href="https://tellzim.com/mudzuri-slams-mwonzora/">TellZim News</a>, Mudzuri said he will not leave the party but will remain a card-carrying and loyal member of the party. He said:
<blockquote>
I am ashamed of what is happening right now but I cannot run away from the party, I have talked to them and I will continue to talk to them but if they don’t listen, I will remain a card-carrying member as I cannot be part of the leadership which fails to observe the democratic tenets of the party.
I can be nominated for any position in the party and have at some point assumed the leadership of the party as you know when Mr (Morgan) Tsvangirai died, he left me in charge of the party.

I Won't Stand For Any Position At Congress - Mudzuri

MDC vice president Elias Mudzuri has said he will not be contesting for any post at the upcoming congress citing irregularities in the party’s electoral processes.
This comes after the opposition party’s National Council nominated party leader Douglas Mwonzora as the sole presidential candidate at the party’s 5th Ordinary Congress set for 18 December this year.
In a leaked WhatsApp conversation, Mudzuri said he does not agree with the whole process and will only change his stance if the process becomes transparent and democratic. He said:

Thank you to all members of the MDC family who have expressed their wish that I stand for re-election as second Vice President of the party at the coming 5th congress.
Please take note that I will not submit myself for that election for any position. I will however remain a committed card-carrying member of the party.
I am not in agreement with the process so I stand conflicted to vie for any position until and unless the process becomes transparent and democratic including knowledge of the colligate from ward to province.

Contacted for comment to <a href="https://tellzim.com/mudzuri-slams-mwonzora/">TellZim News</a>, Mudzuri confirmed the development. He said:

I cannot be nominated by the elite members of the party, nominations should start at the grassroots level.
We are 22 years as a party and that is what we have been doing all along.
I cannot be nominated by my friends, that is not what we do as a party.
</blockquote>
He said will not leave the party but will remain a card-carrying and loyal member of the party. Said Mudzuri:

Mudzuri Says He Is Ashamed To Be Part Of MDC Executive

The MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora says it will hold its 5th Ordinary Congress on 18 December 2022 in Harare.
Mwonzora notified party members about the development, saying this is in line with the MDC-T constitution. He said:

In line with the constitution of the Party, and following the relevant internal processes, notice is hereby given that the 5th Ordinary Congress of the Movement for Democratic Change (Tsvangirai) will be held on the 18th of December 2022 in Harare.

Mwonzora was recently nominated by the MDC-T National Council as the sole presidential candidate for the party’s 5th Ordinary Congress.
On 21 November 2022, party spokesperson Witness Dube said Mwonzora is now the party’s duly elected presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.
At the same National Council meeting, Chief Ndlovu was also nominated 1st Vice President unopposed.

MDC-T Announces Date For Its 5th Ordinary Congress

The opposition MDC National Council has unanimously nominated Douglas Mwonzora as the sole presidential candidate at the party’s 5th Ordinary Congress set for December this year.
In a statement released on Monday, 21 November, MDC national spokesperson Witness Dube said Mwonzora is now the party’s duly elected presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections. Reads the statement:

The MDC National Council meeting held on the 20th of November 2022 at Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House unanimously nominated Honorable Douglas Togarasei Mwonzora to be the sole Presidential candidate at our 5th Ordinary Congress.
By this unanimous nomination, President Mwonzora is now our duly elected Presidential candidate for the 2023 Harmonised elections.
The nomination is an affirmation of President Mwonzora’s visionary leadership, determination, hard work and focus on positioning the party as a choice political home and alternative government to the people of Zimbabwe.
Chief Ndlovu was also nominated 1st Vice President unopposed. Prospective nominations for the positions of 2nd Vice President include Paurina Mpariwa, Engineer Elias Mudzuri, and Nomalanga Khumalo.
Sibusisiwe Budha Masara, Tangwara Matimba, Solomon Chikowero, Morgen Komichi and Ekim Moyo are prospective nominees for the position of National Chairperson.
Gift Chimanikire, Dorothy Gonyethi Ndlovu and Winfred Yvonne Musarurwa are prospective nominees for the position of deputy National Chairperson.
Prospective nominees must garner a minimum of one-third of the National Council vote in order to be nominated for election at the 5th Ordinary Congress.
Notwithstanding other proposed constitutional changes, the Congress will fill in the position of President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, National Chairperson and Deputy National Chairperson in line with the 2014 Congress which resolved to have all the other executive positions being subject to appointment by the President after consultations within the party.
Our 5th Ordinary Congress will be convened this December 2022 at a venue and at a date yet to be advised through our Presidential proclamation.

Mwonzora Elected MDC President Ahead Of Elective Congress

MDC president Nelson Chamisa has assigned roles to his three deputies, namely, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tendai_Biti" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Tendai Biti</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Welshman_Ncube" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Welshman Ncube</a> and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Lynette_Karenyi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Lynette Karenyi-Kore</a>.
Chamisa was elected president unopposed at the party’s elective congress held in Gweru in May while his trio of deputies shrugged off competition from rivals.
According to NewsDay, Biti was assigned to oversee the shaping of policy and ideology in the party, while also overseeing the arms of local government.
Ncube was put in charge of international relations and general administration of the party.
Meanwhile, Karenyi-Kore will monitor the party’s MPs and how they deliver their roles in the constituencies.
NewsDay was told that Chamisa made the move in order to establish order and avoid duplication of roles.

Chamisa Allocates Roles To His Deputies

Hundreds of MDC officials have reportedly sent in CVs to be considered for the party’s national executive and standing committees.
Reports indicate that technocrats, who in the past have been reluctant to take up positions in the party, are now stampeding for 40 available posts.
An official who spoke to Newsday on condition of anonymity had this to say:
<blockquote>The CVs were received from bankers, engineers and doctors who, in the past, have not been willing to take up positions within party structures. They want to be part of the team led by Chamisa.</blockquote>
MDC secretary-general Chalton Hwende told the publication that a special national council meeting will be held this Wednesday. He said:
<blockquote>CVs that had come through the office of the SG by the time we closed is 569. They have been vetted and are now currently in the office of the president.
On Wednesday, we are going to have a special national council meeting, which will sit as a Congress to complete the business of Congress as per resolutions passed by Congress.
We did not complete the business of congress and it will be concluded on that day.</blockquote>
MDC president Nelson Chamisa has the prerogative of appointing party spokesperson, organising secretary, secretary for elections and international relations secretary.
Several party bigwigs are eyeing posts in the two bodies, that is, the national executive and national standing committee.
Among them are Morgen Komichi, Amos Chibaya, Happymore Chidziva, Lillian Timveos, Jacob Mafume, Luke Tambarinyoka, Murisi Zwizwai, Douglas Mwonzora and Settlement Chikwinya.

Over 500 MDC Officials Stampede For 40 Party Positions

Opposition party MDC insiders say that the unresolved succession issue could precipitate chaos in the event that the president is incapacitated.
At the 2019 elective Congress held in Gweru last month, the MDC elected three equal vice presidents and the concern is on who is in line to take over if, for any reason, party president Nelson Chamisa fails to complete his term.
A party insider who spoke to Newsday said that this is a question that still needs to be addressed;
<blockquote>Currently, the party has three equal vice-presidents, all three were elected at the Congress and there is, therefore, not one of them more superior to the others.
This leaves the party in a crisis if the president becomes incapacitated or for whatever reason fails to complete his term of office.
The question that would need to be answered is: Of the three, who will act as president?</blockquote>
The party is set to hold a national council meeting on Wednesday to deal with all outstanding issues from the Congress. Said the source:
<blockquote>The national council will sit on Wednesday and will finalise all the outstanding matters of Congress. We will then avail the amended constitution of the party which will be comprehensive and will deal with those matters; it will be clear and concise.</blockquote>
A law lecturer, Valentine Matutu opined that it is imperative for the MDC to clarify the issue of succession with a clear statement in order to avoid a political crisis.

MDC In Succession Quandary

MDC president Nelson Chamisa faces a herculean task in making key party appointments following the recent elective Congress held in Gweru.
Chamisa has to appoint members to serve in the national standing committee, the party’s decision-making body.
Key posts that need to be filled include party spokesperson, organising secretary, secretary for elections, international relations and secretary for health.
A party insider who spoke to Newsday opined that there are some party loyalists who feel that the party rewarded “sellouts”. Said the source:

There are those in the party bitter after losing to members who once left the party. They think the party rewarded sellouts and these can be pacified by being appointed into the standing committee, but if they miss the bus, they could work against Chamisa.
</blockquote>
Some of the top officials who will be looking forward to being roped into the top echelons of the party include former youth assembly leader Happymore Chidziva, current spokesperson Jacob Mafume and ex-organiser Amos Chibaya. These are all considered Chamisa’s allies.
Former vice-president Morgen Komichi and losing vice-presidential candidate Lilian Timveous are also close to Chamisa and will be expecting to be rewarded for their loyalty.
Tapiwa Mashakada, former secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora, former treasurer-general Theresa Makone, Mbizo legislator Settlement Chikwinya, Murisi Zwizwai, backbencher Jameson Timba and former presidential spokesperson Luke Tambarinyoka are all pining to be roped into the Standing Committee.

Chamisa Faces Uphill Task In Rewarding Allies Post-congress

The MDC successfully held its 5th National Congress from the 24th to the 27th of May 2019, in fulfilment of Constitutional requirements which provide for the holding of a Congress once every five years.
The process had been on-going since March, with Branches, Wards, Districts and Provinces holding their Congresses in a process which had over 500 000 members participating.
Going forward, the ten provinces will, starting from today convene Provincial Councils which are meant to elect five members to be appointed in the National Executive.
The election must ensure gender balance.
Members who also intend to be considered for appointment in the National Executive are to submit their profiles to the office of the Secretary-General. Those who apply must be members of good standing, and the applications must be submitted by the 8th of June.
Consultations on appointments of remaining Standing Committee positions are ongoing. The party will also convene a special National Council to complete Congress business in line with Congress resolutions.

MDC president Nelson Chamisa intends to be at the party’s helm for many years to come and does not want to be contested at the next Congress set to be held in 2024.
In his acceptance speech after getting the presidency unopposed during last weekend’s elective congress held in Gweru, Chamisa said;
<blockquote>I thank you for giving me 13 nominations. I think this is the trajectory that we should always have, giving the president a clear mandate, in the same manner, we used to give our late icon Tsvangirai a clear mandate.

Chamisa took over leadership of the MDC party soon after the death of founding president Morgan Tsvangirai in 2018.
His rise was not without controversy as he had to fight off rivals Thokozani Khupe and Elias Mudzuri who were also vice presidents.

Reports indicate that MDC president Nelson Chamisa is set to throw a lifeline to party bigwigs sidelined during last weekend’s elective Congress held in Gweru’s Ascot Stadium.
Chamisa has the prerogative to appoint some of the national executive members as per the party constitution. Party spokesperson Jacob Mafume said:

Chamisa To Throw Lifeline To Fallen Bigwigs

Vimbai Tsvangirayi Java, daughter to the late MDC founding president and former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, was elected the party’s women’s assembly secretary-general from her hospital bed.
Tsvangirai Java won 632 votes against her opponent Memory Bondiya who polled 217 votes during the just ended MDC congress held in Gweru over the past weekend.
She was not able to make it to the Congress as she is in hospital, recuperating from injuries she sustained in a car crash in Kwekwe about a fortnight ago.
Other Women’s Assembly executive members include spokesperson Barbra Tanyanyiwa, her deputy Melissa Ncube, Virginia Muradzikwa (organising secretary) and Basilia Majaya (treasurer general).

Tsvangirayi Java Wins MDC Vote While Recovering In Hospital

Some MDC supporters were left fuming over the manner in which the just-ended congress was conducted according to a Chronicle report.
Disgruntled party supporters were not happy with the nocturnal holding of elections, believing that the party’s top brass wanted to use the cover of darkness to stuff ballot boxes.
Party supporters who spoke to the Chronicle expressing their displeasure had this to say:
<blockquote>We are not happy at all about how the process was conducted. Organisers could have done better.
The voting process started very late and people had to vote throughout the night which is not fair considering that there was poor lighting as there was no electricity.
They had to resort to using generators and torches but that could have been avoided, if the process had started on time.
… We strongly appeal to our party to avoid such inconsistencies in the future because we are not happy about the whole process.
It is the mandate of the party to make sure that we are happy as supporters and that our suggestions are taken seriously.</blockquote>
The election results showed that the party rejected “loyalists” and embraced “rebels”. For instance, long-serving official Morgen Komichi who was vying the post of vice president was rejected in favour of Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube who left the party at different periods.

MDC Supporters Not Happy With Election Process During Congress - Report

Newly-elected MDC president Advocate Nelson Chamisa said that his party will not hold an extraordinary congress as ruled by the High Court recently.
He added that the next Congress will be held in 2024, after five years as dictated by the party’s constitution.
Chamisa said this while delivering his acceptance speech at the just ended party Congress held at Ascot Stadium in Gweru on Monday. He said:
<blockquote>There will not be a congress in the next five years. When next we meet, we will be coming from the government side of politics.</blockquote>
The newly-appointed party chairperson, Thabitha Khumalo said that the elective congress had addressed the issues raised by Justice Edith Mushore’s ruling that the party has to hold an extraordinary congress.
Khumalo was reading the resolutions that had been made by Congress to delegates in Gweru on Monday. She said:
<blockquote>Congress noted the High Court judgment ordering the party to hold an extraordinary congress and resolved that the necessity and requirements of such an extraordinary congress have been fully addressed by this Congress.</blockquote>
Justice Mushore made a ruling recently that the MDC should hold an extraordinary congress using the party’s 2014 structures to choose new leadership for the party.
The ruling followed an application by a party official from Gokwe who had challenged Chamisa’s elevation as leader of the party.
While a rival faction led by Thokozani Khupe (MDC-T) welcomed the ruling with jubilation, notwithstanding the fact that it had already held its Congress in 2018, the MDC led by Chamisa has appealed the ruling at the Supreme Court.

MDC Leader Nelson Chamisa said yesterday that his party would make sure that President Emmerson Mnangagwa fails. He also said that his party would hold protests and that the government would not be able to stop them.
Speaking at the MDC Congress in Gweru on Saturday, Chamisa said that he was not interested in sharing power but genuine dialogue to end the economic problems in Zimbabwe. He, however, emphasised that he does not recognise Mnangagwa as the legitimate president of Zimbabwe.
Said Chamisa:
<blockquote>We are going to make sure that you (Mnangagwa) fail. We invited traditional leaders because we honour our chiefs. We also invited the Speaker of Parliament, but he didn’t come.
I saw enemies of the people trying to go to the courts and I told them that when it comes to the courts you will not defeat us because we have the best legal team.
What we are saying to Zanu PF leaders is that it is now time for new leaders with fresh ideas and leaders who can make new mistakes.
We are going to elect a new leadership that is going to take us to another level. Everyone is campaigning democratically. There are some who are saying that we want to overthrow Mnangagwa. No, we don’t overthrow what is not there.
Zanu PF has rigged elections enough and we will not go to an election that we lose before the election.
We must make sure we have a democratic election as soon as possible and if they refuse we will force them to go for elections before 2023.
We don’t want political dialogue to share power, but national dialogue to share ideas. What we want to deal with are all the issues to make sure we move forward.
As soon as the congress ends, it will be war. They will not stop us … No party has title deeds for this country. I am not afraid of dying or being arrested. I tell you this, ED will not go anywhere until we resolve the political crisis.</blockquote>

There was a social media moment yesterday when ZBC posted part of the empty Gweru stadium where MDC was having their congress.
The part they posted had few people and people thought of pointing it out.

Zimbabweans on Twitter commented that ZBC was providing imbalanced coverage by choosing to publish pictures of parts of the stadium that were empty.
The ZBC twitter handle actively responded to the comments.

Social Media Moment: ZBC vs Twimbos on MDC Congress Coverage

MDC president Advocate Nelson Chamisa said that his party will mobilise the masses for a confrontation with the “failed” government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
He said that the government will pull the trigger against protesters, and he warned that they can kill but cannot kill all people.
Addressing thousands of delegates who are attending the party’s 5th Congress in Gweru, Chamisa said:
<blockquote>We are going to mobilise for change and we are going to mobilise for transformation.
But I know that once we start doing what we have to do after the Congress, they (government) will panic and start killing people.
However, you can kill but you cannot kill all the people. You will die before you kill everyone. We are ready to die; some of us are already dead anyway.
They have threatened to arrest us. It’s ok. No party has a monopoly to do as it pleases and harass other citizens. Go and hang. I am done with Mnangagwa.</blockquote>
Chamisa insisted that his dialogue overtures to Mnangagwa were not necessitated by a desire to share power, but to share a vision for the country. He said:
<blockquote>I am ready to stay at home as long as the country is being run well. Mnangagwa has failed to unite the people and I have to do it.
We don’t want a political dialogue to share power but to share a vision.
We will resolve the issues in this country. We will have an election not as expected in 2023 but earlier. If they are unwilling we will force them.</blockquote>

New MDC National Youth Assembly Executive

Former ZANU PF MP Temba Mliswa, now an Independent MP for Norton constituency, has defended his decision to attend the MDC Congress now currently taking place at Gweru’s Ascot Stadium in Ascot high-density suburb.
In a statement on his official Twitter handle, Mliswa said:
<blockquote>Today I’ll be attending the MDC Congress by invitation. As I’ve always maintained as an Independent, I remain balanced. I take in views from the ruling party ZANU PF and views from the main opposition MDC Alliance. I take in the good of each, point out the bad and formulate my own opinion.
Contrary to popular belie,f it’s not the first MDC event I’ve attended. The late Tsvangirai has before invited me to address in Wedza, the March for jobs etc, I’m part of progressive initiatives. I also work well with many MDC Alliance MPs as I believe in their capacity.
Norton is a mixed bag and it would be folly of me not to take in the divergent views of all to effectively represent the aspirations of the people of Norton.</blockquote>

Ex-ZANU PF MP To Attend MDC Congress

Vimbai Tsvangirai-Java is set to contest for the MDC women’s assembly secretary-general post from a hospital bed, NewZimbabwe reports.
Tsvangirai-Java is a daughter to the late MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai who died in February last year.
The Glen View South MP was involved in a car crash in Kwekwe recently while she was returning to Harare from a party caucus in Bulawayo.
The accident killed her maternal uncle and a party official from her constituency.
MDC spokesperson, Jacob Mafume revealed that she is admitted at the Avenues Clinic where she is recovering from superficial head wounds, broken left hand and a broken pelvis.
Tsvangirai-Java’s mother, Susan Tsvangirai, died in a car accident in 2009 soon after her father was appointed Prime Minister in a coalition government with the then President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe.

Tsvangirai-Java To Contest For MDC Post From Hospital Bed

MDC-T president Thokozani Khupe said that her party is preparing to hold an extraordinary Congress in line with a recent High Court ruling by Justice Edith Mushore.
The High Court ruled that the late MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai acted unlawfully when he appointed Nelson Chamisa and Elias Mudzuri as deputies alongside Khupe.
As such, Chamisa’s ascendancy to the MDC presidency was declared null and void.
In a statement issued through her spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni, Khupe said:
<blockquote>The preparations for the MDC-T extraordinary congress are at an advanced in line with the High Court Judgment.
Very soon all the delegates of our 2014 congress will have an opportunity to once again retain our movement to its former glory days of steadfastness to the culture, character, values and principles of Social Democracy.
There is, therefore, no need to panic or even employ money and energy in stopping some gathering purported to be our congress as such a gathering is null and void and only amounts to a jamboree.

Khupe Dismisses Chamisa's MDC Congress As A 'Jamboree'

MDC co-vice president Welshman Ncube has donated 10 beasts to feed party delegates who will attend the elective Congress set to start on Friday (today) in Gweru.
Ncube is said to be a highly successful farmer who owns a thriving cattle ranch.
The donation was revealed by the MDC Midlands provincial spokesperson Takavafira Zhou. He said:
<blockquote>That the Midlands province is fully geared to successfully host the historic congress is a fact as evidenced by various committees that have largely worked hard in pursuit of their set objectives and tasks.
MDC national leadership has been lining donations with Professor Welshman Ncube offering 10 beasts.</blockquote>
Other vice presidential aspirants, party deputy chairperson Tendai Biti, and women’s assembly chairperson Lynette Karenyi-Kore have donated a truckload of mealie meal and three beasts respectively.
MDC officials revealed that they have not yet received funds they are entitled to from the government and the party has to rely on donations from members.

Welshman Ncube Donates 10 Beasts Towards MDC Congress

The MDC has resolved to go ahead with its elective Congress scheduled for the 24th to 26th of May this year.
Spokesperson, Jacob Mafume, told the Newsday that the party’s lawyers advised them to proceed regardless of a recent High Court order which instructed them to hold an extraordinary Congress. Said Mafume:
<blockquote>Our lawyers have advised us to proceed as we are doing and they will also be taking care of the needs.
It will be the first after the unfortunate demise of our icon (party founding leader) Morgan Tsvangirai. We are ready and the council took note of the legal issue which was left to our lawyers to deal with.
The party intends to appeal the High Court ruling, though this has not yet been done.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, the party has decided to set up an independent commission to look into grievances by party members who lost during provincial nominations.
Mafume also revealed that some of the officials who lost during the nominations will be co-opted into provincial structures. He said:
<blockquote>As you know, every administrative process has to be internally reviewed, has to be internally audited and in keeping of the rule of the law and democratic tenets, we wanted to make sure that anyone who had complaints, no matter how big or small, they had an opportunity to present them before the independent commission.
The commission looked at the complaints and validated the provincial elections and it is essentially our appeals committee.
It encourages certain provinces to integrate those who would have lost so that we can continue, some of them had some concerns that we felt we needed to keep capturing their leadership within the provincial set up.</blockquote>

MDC Congress Going Ahead Regardless Of High Court Ruling

MDC president Nelson Chamisa said that the party will maintain the current structure of having three vice presidents, but will have one once in power.
Chamisa revealed that three vice presidents will be elected at this week’s elective Congress set to be held in Gweru as a way of continuing with the legacy left by the late founding party president Morgan Tsvangirai: He said:
<blockquote>The issue of three vice-presidents is a legacy for our late president Mr Tsvangirai, with a trade union background. The party is different from the government.
The party can have as many leaders as possible, but in government, we will have a lean cabinet, with one vice-president on the basis of State resources.
I want you to know that none of the vice-presidents is paid any salaries by the party. It’s voluntary work.
Even the president is not paid. Not that I want a salary because my salary is a victory, if we have a victory, then my salary would have come.</blockquote>

Chamisa To Have One VP Once In Power

The opposition MDC has invited the ruling party ZANU PF-affiliated war veterans association and the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T to its 24-26 elective Congress set to be held in Gweru.
The invitation was revealed by the party’s national organising secretary, Mkoba MP Amos Chibaya and the secretary for information, Jacob Mafume last week.
However, MDC-T vice president Obert Gutu dismissed the invitation, calling the MDC Congress kindergarten gibberish. Speaking to the Daily News, Gutu said:
<blockquote>At any rate, the MDC-T has got completely no appetite to attending kindergarten gibberish.
If we want real entertainment, we go to a circus and not to a facade of a gathering disguised as a congress.
There is the High Court order by Honourable Justice Edith Mushore to contend with.
We are a law-abiding political party that resolutely believes in the rule of law and constitutionalism. We adhere to democracy and not mobocracy.
Why should we be seen hanging around with that lot? No, that won’t happen until the second coming of the Son of Man. We are perfectly happy where we are.
Let them wine and dine using the money they are getting from Robert Mugabe and Grace Mugabe. The chickens are coming home to roost. It’s not a congress, it’s actually a complete dog’s breakfast.</blockquote>
War veterans secretary-general, Victor Matemadanda said that he is not going to attend the Congress. He said:
<blockquote>Assuming it was formal I would still not attend because in view of the court ruling it is an illegal congress and I would not attempt to give it any legality.
… In any case for your own information when I sought to attend Tsvangirai’s send off before his body left for Buhera last year, the MDC youths barred me and how will the so-called vanguards allow me to attend their congress when they blocked me from a funeral?</blockquote>
