A 39-year-old man from the Chief Mataruse area in Mberengwa, Midlands Province, was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court for raping his 17-year-old daughter, a student at a local secondary school.
The court heard that the accused had returned to his parents’ homestead from South Africa sometime in December 2022 and was allocated the same hut where the complainant and her younger sister were sleeping.
In January 2023, the accused, who was intoxicated, came home and found his two daughters asleep. He then got into the blankets with the minors, started caressing the 17-year-old’s breast, and proceeded to remove her underwear.
When the girl informed her father that she was uncomfortable with his actions, he threatened her and proceeded to have sexual intercourse with her without her consent.
During the assault, the complainant’s sister woke up and witnessed the accused having sexual intercourse with the complainant.
The accused immediately stopped and ordered both girls not to reveal the incident to anyone. However, the younger sister informed their grandmother about the matter.
The grandmother questioned the complainant, who then revealed that her father had raped her, but the grandmother did not take any action.
The accused later built his own homestead and took his new wife and two daughters with him, where he continued to rape the 17-year-old on multiple occasions during the night.
On February 27, 2024, the police received a tip-off and launched an investigation, which revealed that the accused had been engaging in nonconsensual sexual intercourse with his daughter.

Mberengwa Man Sentenced To 15 Years In Jail For Raping Teenage Daughter

A five-month-old baby reportedly died during a scuffle between her parents at Village Chirima near Bedford Business Centre, Mberengwa, late last month.
According to <a href="https://tellzim.com/mberengwa-infant-killed-in-parents-scuffle/">TellZim News</a>, the tragic incident occurred around 8 PM on April 26, 2024.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Midlands Province, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident and appealed for information that could help to arrest the suspect. He said:

We confirm the death of a five-month-old baby in Mberengwa and the suspect is yet to be apprehended. We are appealing for information that may lead to his arrest.
</blockquote>
The parents of the now-deceased minor, Faith Mpofu and Erinando Makena both from Musvupi Village, Chief Mataruse, Mberengwa, had a long-standing dispute regarding the paternity of the baby.
Makena constantly expressed doubt that he had sired the child and alleged that his wife was impregnated by someone else before their marriage.
It is alleged that on the fateful day, while her husband was away, Mpofu packed her belongings and left for her parents’ house.
However, Mpofu reportedly failed to get transport to Zvishavane and sought refuge at Mudzimu homestead near Bedford Business Centre, Mberengwa.
When he returned home, Makena gathered that his wife was at the Mudzimu homestead and followed her there.
Mpofu had the now deceased, Annita Makena strapped on her back when Makena arrived at Mudzimu homestead.
Makena allegedly assaulted Mpofu with a switch and struck the now-deceased in the process leading to her death.

Mberengwa Man Accidentally Kills Own Daughter During Scuffle With His Wife

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced the arrest of Prince Gwanhuwa who was wanted for car theft. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the ZRP said the 34-year-old man was arrested by Bulawayo police while trying to evade a police checkpoint on the 2nd of January 2024. Read the report:

On 02/01/24, ZRP Bulawayo officers on traffic blitz arrested Prince Gwanhuwa (34), who tried to evade a police checkpoint while driving a Honda Fit vehicle along 4th Avenue Extension. The officers escorted the suspect to Bulawayo Central Police, where it was discovered that the suspect was a wanted person for a motor vehicle theft case committed in April 2021.

The police have arrested a man named Regobert Joseph (23) who was wanted for unlawfully entering a place and stealing something in Mabvuku back in January 2021.

Police in Mberengwa arrested Tawedzerwa Mahole (21) and Wilfred Tshuma (20) on January 4, 2024, in connection with a murder case that took place in Fani Village. The suspects allegedly attacked Legejani Gumbo (23) because they accused him of taking a twist of dagga (mbanje/marijuana) that they were supposed to smoke together.

Wanted Car Thief Arrested While Trying To Evade Police Checkpoint

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported that they have arrested a man named Takeknowledge Mthombeni (39) for <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/12/26/filabusi-man-shot-dead-over-missing-snooker-token/">shooting and killing</a> Wilson Malunga (21) while they were playing snooker in Filabusi on Christmas day. The suspect has also been charged with armed robbery, as the firearm he used was stolen during a previous robbery in Mberengwa. A police report seen by Pindula News read:

Reference is made to the ZRP message on X platform on 26/12/23 in which Wilson Malunga (21) was shot dead by suspect, Takeknowledge Mthombeni (39) while playing snooker in Filabusi on 25/12/23 at around 0130 hours. The police has arrested the suspect at Mabhuru Business Centre, Neta, Mberengwa. The firearm used in the commission of the crime has been recovered. The suspect is now facing another charge of armed robbery in relation to the case which occurred in Mberengwa on 23/12/23 where the firearm used to kill Wilson Malunga was stolen.

In August 2022, President Emmerson Mnangagwa offered amnesty to people who owned illegal firearms in Zimbabwe. The amnesty allowed them to hand in their guns to the police without facing any consequences. Around 538 guns were surrendered before the deadline, and the amnesty was extended.
Unfortunately, despite this effort, there is still a problem with gun violence in the country. The police are still receiving reports of homicides and armed robberies involving unlicensed firearms. The amnesty does not seem to have fully solved the issue.
Gun violence is a serious problem because it puts people’s lives at risk and creates fear and insecurity in communities. The government needs to take further action to address this issue and ensure the safety of its citizens.
In a separate incident, the police in Odzi are asking for help in an investigation of a hit-and-run accident that happened on Christmas day. A man (36) was hit by a car at Riverside Bridge along the Harare-Mutare Road near Nofoke Poultry Farm. The driver did not stop after the accident, and the man died at the scene.

Update On Man Shot Dead Over Missing Snooker Token: Shooter Arrested

Mberengwa residents voiced their discontent with Kuvimba Mining House’s failure to prioritise their needs and concerns. They expressed these concerns following an interview on ZiFM radio, hosted by Farai Mwakutuya, with Member of Parliament for Mberengwa West, Tafanana Zhou, on November 22nd, 2023. The interview centred around the lithium mining activities of Kuvimba Mining House at Sandawana Mine, situated along the Great Dyke.
The interview discussed various aspects related to the mining activities of Kuvimba House at Sandawana Mine and the development of the Mberengwa district. Key points included the relocation of Sandawana Primary School, road rehabilitation, engagement with the local community, employment opportunities, skill development, infrastructure improvements, environmental concerns, and the sponsorship of Chiefs’ courts and a hospital. Here are some of the important points discussed during the interview:
<blockquote>
1. Sandawana Primary School will be relocated from its current location. 
2. A road stretching about 10 kilometres from Sandawana to Zverenje is being rehabilitated to connect Mberengwa and West Nicholson. 
3. Kuvimba House has engaged with the local community through their leaders, particularly the Chiefs, to ensure benefits reach the general population. 
4. Tafanana Zhou called for the rehabilitation of roads in Mberengwa district and wants Kuvimba House to pave the roads. 
5. Sandawana Mine has employed approximately 1,000 local people since its reopening, with around 20% of employees being women. 
6. Local businesses are benefiting from the mining activities by supplying goods and services to the mine. 
7. Kuvimba House plans to build 16 Chiefs’ courts and is sponsoring the construction of a hospital. 
9. Tafanana Zhou expressed confidence in Kuvimba House’s efforts to mitigate environmental degradation. 
10. Local residents are suggesting the establishment of a plant for beneficiation in Mberengwa. 
11. Ordinary people in the area desire improvements such as better road infrastructure, hospitals, on-the-job training, and the construction of the Jeka Bridge. 
12. Tafanana Zhou said they won’t pressure Kuvimba into reconstructing the Jeka (Tandavarai) Bridge.
</blockquote>
Responding to the interview, residents expressed concern about the prioritisation of benefits for chiefs over community development projects. They argue that funds should be invested in initiatives like clinics, schools, infrastructure, and attracting further investment, rather than solely benefiting local chiefs. Said one resident:
<blockquote>
There isn’t anything for people with high academic qualifications from the locals which means little trickles into the communities by way of salaries. Secondly, the idea of overdoing things for chiefs in my view isn’t of any benefit to the suffering people. Chiefs already have hefty perks for doing nothing to the extent of being awarded all-terrain vehicles when police stations and clinics have nothing. Focusing on chiefs in my view is populist and counterproductive. Kuvimba should embark on more meaningful CRS such as perhaps equipping our clinics, and schools, ensuring communities have clean running water, rehabilitation of bridges dip tanks, tarring of roads and constructing a dormitory mini town to serve as a nucleus to attract further investment into the area. District administrators’ offices should be funded to decentralise and have a satellite station there so that our people begin to see development. 
</blockquote>
The residents also raised concerns about the lack of accountability and transparency in agreements and plans between Kuvimba and the chiefs. They question the absence of concrete timelines and information regarding the mining company’s investment in the community. Dr Takavafira Zhou, the President of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), said:
<blockquote>
There are certainly fundamental weaknesses in the submission by Mp Tafanana Zhou in the ZiFM radio interview.  There is virtually no timeframe for rebuilding and relocation of Sandawana Primary Schools by Kuvimba and the MP sees nothing wrong with that.
There is no timeframe for building a hospital and the MP sees nothing wrong with that.
Chiefs met Kuvimba representatives in Zvishavane but there was nothing concrete agreed upon except verbal promises, and the MP sees nothing wrong with that. Building 16 chiefs’ courts is certainly not a priority for the majority of the people of Mberengwa wallowing in poverty and misery, a consequence of natural resource plunder from Mberengwa during the colonial period and in independent Zimbabwe.
Assuming Kuvimba has employed 1000 locals which is doubtful, has the MP considered the number of workers the Co has? To date, Kuvimba has more than 5000 workers, and 1000 is insignificant. Kuvimba is also well known for its slave wages to general labourers.
Is the MP aware that the construction of a railway line from Mberengwa to Mozambique is at an advanced stage in order to enhance the looting of Lithium by Kuvimba?
</blockquote>
Residents also expressed frustration with the lack of infrastructure development in Mberengwa. They complain about the poor state of roads, bridges, and other infrastructure, and accuse the mining company of neglecting its responsibility to repair and maintain these facilities. Dr Takavafira Zhou added:
<blockquote>
Kuvimba destroyed the Sandawana-Chegato-Mabika-Yorks Road; the Sandawana-Danga-Yorks Road; Sandawana-Mataga road and is now running away from the responsibility of repairing the low-lying bridges, and tarring the roads and now prefers to go through Zverenje and the MP sees nothing wrong with that.
Today Kuvimba has plundered more than 2.5 million tonnes of Lithium from Sandawana and there is virtually nothing to show for this to the people of Mberengwa.
</blockquote>
Residents compare the lack of community development in Mberengwa to other mining areas where mines have invested in schools, clinics, and infrastructure projects. Said another resident:
<blockquote>
Other communities where there are mines have benefited a lot. Check communities around Mimosa Mine, Zimplats, and Unki. Here in Mberengwa mines don’t even bother to construct proper roads for accessing their mines. We will definitely benefit from those roads as well. Mimosa has built a lot of schools, and clinics, and upgraded the Zvishavane District Hospital to a better standard. If the same can happen in Mberengwa we will be grateful. Just schools and hospitals would be a bare minimum. Or at least adding ma block pazvikoro (at schools) or textbooks, computers and stationery.
</blockquote>
Another resident said:
<blockquote>
Mberengwa is always open to looting. Where are Inyala Mine, Rhonda Mine even the Original Sandawana Mine?
</blockquote>
Residents also called for better representation and understanding of their community’s needs from leaders. They criticised current leaders for prioritising their own interests and called for leaders who prioritise sustainable development and have a better understanding of the community’s needs. Said a resident named Martin:
<blockquote>
It’s tragic. Our leaders, political and traditional, put themselves ahead of the people. There can be no better illustration. Chief should have identified more needy people from within their communities instead. But l guess that’s the African way. Mukuru ndiye anotanga kunhonga nyama.
</blockquote>
There is also criticism of the Member of Parliament for not actively engaging with the local populace and adequately representing their interests. Fumed one resident:
<blockquote>
The legislator needs a lot of help from Lithium Community Group. Let Public Relations or a spokesman/person talk for the mine. Kwete kuti Jeka Bridge rino divider attention ye Kuvimba House. The Legislator does not know the depth of the Mining House’s purse. Yes, the Mining Giant may have their own plans but there is nothing wrong in asking them to look Eastwards. As they have embarked on this huge mining venture they may receive big heavy mining equipment by railway via Ngungumbane who knows.
Jeka Bridge has stood unattended for far far too long. It’s now a nasty eye sore. Zvinotonyadzisa kuti (it’s embarrassing) how many MPs have come and gone vachisiya rakadaro (leaving the bridge in its poor state).
</blockquote>
The Jeka/Tandavarai Bridge, located on the Mwenezi River, was swept away by floods in 2017 when the Chimwe Dam walls were breached. As a result, villagers from both sides were unable to cross the river for nearly two months due to the ongoing flooding. Although attempts were made to restore the bridge, it is now described as a makeshift structure. Additionally, there are allegations that the funds allocated for the bridge’s rehabilitation were misappropriated.

Mberengwa residents made the following recommendations:
1. Provide scholarships or sponsorships for individuals with high academic qualifications from the local community to pursue tertiary education in programs that will benefit the community. 
2. Introduce a book fund to provide reading materials at schools. 
3. Establish a vocational training centre for local artisans. 
4. Fast-track the upgrading of referral hospitals to benefit the entire district. 
5. Encourage other stakeholders to contribute to the development of the Mberengwa district. 
6. Pledge a certain percentage of revenue for community development projects through the chiefs. 
7. Conduct environmental impact assessments and promote local processing of lithium. 
8. Repair and maintain infrastructure in Mberengwa. 
9. Ensure fair representation and understanding of community needs by leaders. 
10. Improve accountability and transparency in agreements and plans between Kuvimba and the community. 
11. Create job opportunities and provide fair wages for local workers. 
12. Invest in community development projects like schools, clinics, and infrastructure. 
13. Engage with the community (not local leadership but the common man), represent their interests, and prioritize sustainable development. 
14. Share community dividends from the resources accruing in Mberengwa. 
15. Address the environmental impact and health concerns caused by mining activities. 
16. Prioritize community development over benefits for chiefs. 
19. Provide ambulances and upgrade hospitals for the general population. 
20. Ensure equal development and investment in Mberengwa as in other mining areas.

Mberengwa Residents Not Happy With Lithium Miner Kuvimha House, MP Tafanana Zhou

Villagers in Mberengwa have claimed that Kuvimba Mining House took their lithium ore from Sandawana Mine and did not pay for it.
In late 2022, at least 5 000 artisanal miners invaded the former emerald mine after the discovery of lithium.
The government then moved in to control lithium mining activities at Sandawana after it emerged that some foreigners were buying the ore from locals for US$200 per tonne and exporting it.
The Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) was given exclusive rights to supervise mining activities while selling the ore to Kuvimba.
In November, Kuvimba and ZMF officials committed to assisting the artisanal miners with mining equipment and also buying the lithium at improved prices.
However, villagers who spoke to the Independent alleged that Kuvimba has reneged on its promise to villagers. Said the villagers:
<blockquote>
We were selling lithium to buyers including Chinese who were paying us as much as US$200 [per tonne] but when Kuvimba moved in they are paying as little as US$50 per tonne.
We were expecting Kuvimba, as a government entity, to try and match these prices but we were fooled when the officials intervened.
</blockquote>
The Independent reported sources as saying Kuvimba took away lithium ore that had been mined by villagers in the Upper and Lower Varichem and Gwamakudo areas. Said the source:
<blockquote>
Kuvimba sent a huge fleet of tipper trucks onto the mountains and loaded all the lithium ore that we had extracted and disappeared into the night.
We lost compressors and their accessories. They even took our shovels and wheelbarrows.
At least they could have paid us the little they owed us and returned our equipment.
People are afraid to go to Zvishavane to claim their equipment for fear of arrest and we know it is stored with the police.
</blockquote>
Villagers also claimed that ZMF was not helping them as promised by the leadership, saying the federation was demanding a US$5 registration fee from each villager.
ZMF provincial chairman Makumba Nyenje told the Independent that 1 200 miners were registered in Mberengwa.

Mberengwa Villagers Accuse Kuvimba Of "Looting" Their Lithium Ore

A woman from Chikanga Village, Chief Chingoma, Mberengwa, was arrested after she allegedly offered to a minor girl (15) to have sex with a young man (18).
It is alleged that the 18-year-old man had attempted to rape the girl earlier but failed.
The woman is related to both the man and the girl. The 18-year-old man is his son and the 15-year-old girl is her granddaughter.
The man is alleged to have raped his niece with the assistance of his mother who persuaded her granddaughter to have sexual intercourse with him.
The man allegedly had intercourse with his niece several times after her grandmother promised her some money.
Prosecutor Ali Mutause told the court that sometime in August 2022, at around 9 PM, the accused went to the minor’s homestead and knocked at her bedroom door.
The court heard that the girl refused to open and the accused went away and returned in the company of her grandmother.
The juvenile then opened the door after she heard her grandmother’s voice.
The grandmother instructed the complainant to have sex with the accused and left the two alone.
It is alleged that the accused tried to have sex with the minor but failed after she bit his hand.
The following day, the grandmother and the accused returned again and she promised the complainant some money if she slept with the accused.
She complied and the accused raped her on different occasions from then on until 12 September 2022.
The court heard that at some stage, the grandmother persuaded the girl to get married to her ex-boyfriend.
The grandmother once assaulted the girl’s ex-boyfriend accusing him of having an affair with her granddaughter.
It was further alleged that on 13 September 2022, the girl’s grandmother escorted her to the former boyfriend’s homestead and left her left there, but she returned the following day.
When the girl arrived home her grandmother forced her to go back to her former boyfriend but she refused.
On 06 January 2023, the grandmother chased her away and she reportedly spent two days in the bush.
On 08 January 2023, the complaint’s stepmother summoned her to her place and the girl opened up to her stepmother about what had happened.

Villagers in Ward 37 in Mberengwa District, Midlands Province, have been warned against walking at dawn and dusk because of marauding hyenas that have invaded their community.
A villager, Luckson Pasipanodya, said the hyenas haven’t attacked people yet but they have already killed donkeys, goats, sheep, and calves.
The most affected areas are villages, Nungirai, Chivasa, Pararai and around Gwai Primary School, Makwava Primary, Chapungu Secondary and Mundi-Mataga Dam area under Chief Chingoma. Said Pasipanodya:

These hyenas are surely causing a headache to us as villagers. Goats, sheep and donkeys are at the mercy of these animals. We have never had them in such a big number.
This time there are many and are sure to leave us poorer and hungry as donkeys form part of our draught power.
They haven’t attacked people but fears are that they may pounce on children and those that may be travelling to catch buses at dawn.

Villagers said they do not know where the wild animals came from but suspect that they migrated from farms in the Sovelele area in Mwenezi and Makhado into Mberengwa.
MP for Mberengwa South Tasara Hungwe said they engaged the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) for help in dealing with the hyena menace and the teams were in the area. He said:

We have engaged the Zimparks team and we hope they can do something to scare them away because people’s livestock is at risk.

More than 5 000 artisanal miners who had descended on Sandawana Mine in Mberengwa in search of lithium have been dispersed, an official has said.
The artisanal miners and dealers had descended on the defunct emerald mine in search of the newly-discovered lithium.
Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Larry Mavima said some “unscrupulous” businesspeople were buying the lithium from the illegal miners before exporting the mineral. Said Mavima:

We were informed that there was a lithium rush in Mberengwa and that’s why we decided to come down to have first-hand information on the goings on.
We have since stopped all the operations to allow for formal operations.

Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) president, Henrietta Rushwaya, said artisanal miners should benefit from the lithium. She said:

Police Stop Illegal Lithium Mining At Sandawana Mine

A traditional leader from Mberengwa, Midlands province has urged his subjects to vote for the ruling ZANU PF in the 2023 elections.
Chief Andrew Bvute said this last week during commemorations of the International Day of Peace at Vanguard Mine, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200001107/vote-zanu-pf-chief-tells-villagers">NewsDay</a> reported.
He declared his love for Zanu PF and urged people to register to vote and vote for the ruling party. Chief Bvute said:

To those who have not registered to vote, please do so and vote for the party that I love a lot — that is, Zanu PF.
Zanu PF is the party of choice and I urge you all to vote for it.
</blockquote>
He said people without national identity cards would be assisted to get the documents so that they register to vote.
Civic society organisations (CSOs) and opposition political parties have been accusing traditional leaders of being partisan in favour of the ruling party in violation of the national Constitution which forbids them from being partisan.
In past elections, CSOs accused traditional leaders of force-marching their subjects to vote for ZANU PF.
The government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been giving traditional leaders goodies like vehicles and electricity connections to their homes with observers saying the ruling party was buying favours.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested three Mberengwa miners over the murder of Muneinashe Mangena who had teamed up with his colleagues to conduct illegal mining activities at the accused’s mine.

Police confirms the arrest of Oswell Zhou (41), Anengoni Zhou (29), Muchineripi Masarira (43) and Wilson Kuchivirika (32) in connection with the murder of Muneinashe Mangena (19) in Mberengwa on 16/11/21.
The victim teamed up with Jemson Macheza (21) and Josalam Zhou Museva (20) to undertake some illegal mining activities at an unregistered gold mine belonging to the suspects. 
The quartet attacked the victim and struck him with an axe on the head before he fell into a shaft and died. Josalam Zhou Museva managed to escape while Jemson Mucheza was assaulted with logs all over the body. Investigations are underway.

Violence is prevalent in the mining sector, especially amongst artisanal (makorokoza) and small scale miners.
In recent years, the mining sector was faced with machete-wielding gangs who terrorised miners and the general populace particularly in gold mining towns dotted across the country. 
They would overpower miners, invade mines and conduct illegal mining activities.

In a related murder case, police in Fort Rixon have arrested 4 suspects in connection with a murder case which occurred on the 8th of June at Lambisto night club, Shangani business centre in Fort Rixon.

The victim (27) had an altercation over an unknown reason with one of the patrons at Lambisto Night Club whom he struck with an axe on the head.
The suspects intervened and struck the victim several times on the head with an axe, brick, spanner and an empty beer bottle.

Man Kills Girlfriend After Dispute, Commits Suicide

A married Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) officer has been dragged to court for allegedly having s_xual intercourse with his 15-year-old lover on numerous occasions from a car.
Tavatangira Chiromunye (30) appeared before Mberengwa Magistrate Caroline Tafira on charges of having intercourse with a minor.
The alleged crime was committed in Zvishavane but it is being heard in Mberengwa because magistrates in Zvishavane recused themselves on the grounds that they work with the accused, Masvingo Mirror reports.
Prosecutor Ali Mutausi told the court that Chiromunye would pick up the minor using his Toyota Fun Cargo and park adjacent to Lambizi Lodge, Zvahavande and have consensual s_x with the girl from the car.
This happened at least three times and the matter came to light when the complainant’s father realised that his daughter was not at home.
Her aunt interviewed her and that is when she disclosed that she was in a relationship with Chiromunye since 2020.
The accused is being represented by Grace Nyabawa and was remanded to June 2021 on free bail.
It is the State case that sometime in 2020, Chiromunye proposed love to the complainant and she accepted.
Towards the end of April 2021, the accused person approached the complainant at her place of residence when she was alone, knocked on her window and advised her to meet at the main gate.
He picked her at the main gate and drove off Prince Street to a place adjacent to Lambizi Lodge, where he parked.
The accused continued having extramarital s_xual intercourse using the same vehicle at the same place.

Prisons Officer In Court For Bedding Minor (15)

A suspected rapist left his cellphone at the scene of his crime after he had violated a 6-year-old girl in Mberengwa.
The 32-year-old (name supplied) committed the crime on 17 February this year in Chief Mudavanhu’s area.
The suspect allegedly broke into a room, raped the minor and left his mobile phone which tied him to the act.
He appeared before Mberengwa Magistrate Evia Mudavanhu recently and was remanded in custody to 23 April 2021.
Prosecutor Faith Mwale told the court that the accused entered into a homestead and broke a door at the room where the minor was sleeping alone.
She the suspect accidentally dropped his phone before fleeing.
The matter was reported at Mberengwa Police station and the mobile phone was traced back to him leading to his arrest.

Vumukwana Primary School in Mberengwa North Constituency suffered a devastating loss after Monday rainy storms blew off the roof of some of its classrooms.
It is reported that the storms affected the block which was being used by ECD 1 learners and also blew the CIDA roof. One official at the school said:

The family of a man who was killed in cold blood by police in a case of mistaken identity in Mberengwa early this month said the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) never bothered to assist with the burial or even apologise for the heinous crime.
Lodrick Matsweru of Rudway Village, chief Bvute in Mberengwa was killed by police on November 3, 2020.
He was responding to a knock on the door by police officers who were looking for armed robbers who had robbed a fuel tanker when one of the officers pumped four bullets into his chest. He died instantly.
Matsweru was buried on 8 November in Chief Mudzengi area in Shurugwi. Farai Matsweru, the deceased’s uncle said:
<blockquote>We are devastated by the killing of our son. We expected the Police to at least come and apologise.
They did not even offer their condolences. It is like they killed a dog and yet this was an innocent man?</blockquote>
National Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told Masvingo Mirror that ZRP was still investigating the matter.
Ass Comm Nyathi however, said that the family can raise any queries that it has with the Officer Commanding District, Chief Superintended Makusha.

Police Ignore Family Of Innocent Man They Killed In Mberengwa

A police officer from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Support Unit allegedly shot and killed an innocent man by pumping four bullets into his chest in Mberengwa on Tuesday morning, The Mirror reports.
The victim, Lodrick Matsweru (26), was visiting a friend, Danidzirai Muzhanduki, at Village 3 Rudway in Chief Bvute’s area.
On the fateful day, Matsweru was sleeping when he heard a knock on the door around four AM. When he opened the door, he was met with a hail of bullets and died instantly.
The police officers were looking for an armed robber but opened fire without asking any questions or verifying the identity of the person who opened the door.
Reports indicate that police were looking for either Tichaona Muzhanduki or Doubt Chiponda suspected to have robbed a crew of a fuel tanker of some money.
The cops, some of whose names are in the hands of The Mirror allegedly tried to run away after the shooting but were blocked by angry villagers who had gathered at the scene.
It is further alleged that the robber had US$31 000 on him and the cops may have had an interest in that money.
Midlands Police spokesperson Ethel Mukwende said she was on leave when The Mirror called her for a comment.
Her workmate Xolani Dube referred questions to the national Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi who said he was in a meeting when The Mirror called him on Thursday.

Cop Discharges 4 Bullets Into Chest Of Innocent Man

Police in Mberegwa has launched a manhunt for Zvinavashe Mahove from Chief Mazihofa’s area who fatally assaulted his colleague allegedly over a mug of beer.
Police are keen on interviewing Mahove over the death of his colleague Brighton Hove, with whom he was drinking beer at Mutekedza Business Centre when the fatal assault happened last week.
Midlands Police spokesperson Joel Goko the two were drinking from the same mug when they suddenly had a misunderstanding over the beer. Said Goko:
<blockquote>They had a misunderstanding while drinking beer at a tuck-shop. The accused assaulted the deceased with an unknown object several times on his head and kicked him with booted feet.</blockquote>
Goko urged members of the public to avoid violence in resolving their differences.

An MDC Alliance official in the Midlands Province, Trinos Chinyoka, died on Saturday after falling into an uncovered disused gold mine shaft at night.
Chinyoka, who was Mberengwa North constituency co-ordinating committee secretary, had been reported missing for three days when his body was found at Chabudapasi Gold Mine near Yorkes business centre.
The development was confirmed by MDC Alliance Midlands provincial spokesperson, Takavafira Zhou. He said:
<blockquote>He met his untimely death when he fell in an unprotected shaft at Chabudapasi Gold Mine near Yorkes business centre at night four days ago and was only found after searching for three days. Chinyoka was a committed and fearless cadre ready to be an agent in any hostile environment.</blockquote>
Chinyoka will be buried in Chinyoka village under Chief Mposi today and Zhou has called on MDC Alliance supporters to attend the burial in large numbers.
Zhou also condemned Chabudapasi Gold Mine for its failure to fill up disused mine shafts and protect existing mining shafts saying many people and a lot of animals have fallen into the pits.

Missing MDC Alliance Official Found Dead In Mine Shaft

A ZANU PF member of Parliament has challenged a lawsuit by a Mberengwa woman who accused him of breaking his virginity and failure to marry her as he had promised.
Tafanana Zhou, who represents Mberengwa North, is being sued by Henrietta Tafadzwa Chauke (35), a student nurse in Harare.
Chauke last week filed summons at the Bulawayo High Court through her lawyers Mugiya and Macharaga Law Chambers.
Zhou is cited as the respondent.
The woman is also demanding to be paid $30 000 from Zhou for contumelia arising from his broken promise of marrying her.
Zhou has, however, challenged the summons through his lawyer Tawanda Tavengwa of Mutuso, Taruvinga and Mhiribidi Legal Practitioners. Said Zhou:
<blockquote>The respondent is not personally known to me and I have never met her and what I know is that I received WhatsApp messages from a person who alleged to be the respondent making sexual advances towards me. The person went as far as introducing herself to me by sending me her pictures and I did not respond.
I submit that the respondent cannot prove at all that she is known to me and that I had sexual intercourse with her.</blockquote>
Zhou argued that he had been informed that the woman used a similar modus operandi in 2014 when she instituted a claim of seduction against one Simon Magidivana of Zvishavane.
The woman claimed at the time to have fallen in love with one Mgidivana between August and October in 2014 during which she was a virgin and they had sex.

Henrietta Tafadzwa Chauke, of Mberengwa, told the High Court that Mberengwa North MP Tafanana Zhou (Zanu PF) broke her virginity and broke his promise to marry her.
Chauke claims that her chances of finding a marriage partner are now remote because of lost virginity.
In summons filed on her behalf at the Bulawayo High Court by lawyers Mugiya and Macharaga Law Chambers, Chauke said that she only agreed to have sex with Zhou because he promised to marry her.
The defendant (Zhou) also introduced me to some of his relatives and we had sexual intercourse which was premised on prospects for an imminent marriage;
<blockquote>At the time of the sexual intercourse with the defendant, I was a virgin and I fell at the instance of his solicitation and promise to marry me.
My personal dignity and reputation in the eyes of my family and friends were grievously impaired by the breach of promise to marry especially after the defendant had introduced me to his brothers and has also introduced him to my aunt and sisters during which he also reiterated his promise to marry me.</blockquote>
According to ZimLive, Zhou is yet to respond to Chauke’s demand.

Police in Mberengwa are looking for a 44-year-old man who reportedly murdered his stepdaughter after she tried to reconcile him and her mother following a nocturnal domestic quarrel.
The man has been identified as Aaron Moyo of Maromo village under Chief Mataga. He allegedly stabbed Tariro Shumba (21) all over her body leading to her death before she had reached the hospital.
Police say on 17 March this year, there was a domestic dispute involving Moyo and his wife Colleta Ncube (38). Shumba, who was sleeping in another room woke up and attempted to resolve the dispute only for Moyo to hit her with a log several times.

Man Kills Stepdaughter For Interfering In Domestic Dispute

The MDC-T has built a two roomed house for the family of Fainos Kufazvinei Zhou who was abducted and tortured to death in the run-up to the June 2000, in Mberengwa.  Zhou was abducted together with his brother James and Elias Dambara, who survived the torture and pointed the finger at Wilson Chitoro who was a Zanu-PF activist in Mberengwa. Chitoro was declared a liberation hero after his death in 2014. The house was donated by the MDC-T Veterans’ Association (MDCVA) and handed over by  MDC-T deputy national chairman Morgan Komichi.
Munyaradzi Mutandavari, MDC-T Midlands South provincial spokesperson, said:
<blockquote>The attendance was superb considering that district rallies since the rigged 2013 harmonised elections have been failing to attract such huge numbers. Speaker after speaker narrated the heartless torture the brave trio went through.
Our provincial leaders also pledged to build another house for James Zhou`s surviving children.</blockquote>
