Police in Bulawayo have seized drugs and banned substances worth $8 million in recent raids amid indications that youths have started mixing common household grocery items such as Cerevita and Mazoe in drug concoctions to get high.
This was revealed by Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary Paul Nyoni while speaking at a meeting on strategies against the scourge of drug and substance abuse at Mhlahlandlela Government Complex on Sunday. The <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/police-seize-8-million-worth-of-drugs-as-youths-incorporate-cerevita-into-abuse-patterns/">Chronicle</a> quoted Nyoni as saying:
<blockquote>
Crystal meth and imbanje constitute most of the drugs being abused. Police have confiscated drugs amounting to $8 million. Youths are reportedly innovating around drugs and substance abuse.
A concoction of some of the country’s arguably best brands; cerevita and mazoe has become a substance consuming the youth as they innovate on the destructive path.
</blockquote>
Some of the substances commonly abused in Zimbabwe include alcohol, marijuana (commonly known as “mbanje”), methamphetamines (commonly known as “mutoriro” or “guka”), cocaine, heroin, and prescription drugs.
Factors that contribute to drug and substance abuse in Zimbabwe include unemployment, poverty, peer pressure, lack of education and awareness about the consequences of substance abuse, easy access to drugs, and social or psychological challenges.
Drug and substance abuse pose serious health risks to individuals and society. It can lead to physical and mental health problems, addiction, impaired judgment, increased risk-taking behaviors, crime, and social disintegration.
In order to tackle drug and substance abuse, the Government has made efforts to establish drug rehabilitation centers and raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse.
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and various support groups in Zimbabwe provide counseling, rehabilitation, and education programmes to help individuals struggling with drug and substance abuse. 
These initiatives aim to offer assistance, support, and rehabilitation to affected individuals and their families.
Studies show that some young people start to abuse alcohol, drugs and other substances at the age of 12 years.
In case you have a son, daughter, friend, or relative who has a problem with drug abuse, the following public psychiatric institutions offer help in fighting drug addiction:

Zimbabweans Youths Now Using Cerevita And Mazoe In Drug Concoctions

Six people died near <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mazowe_Dam">Mazowe Dam</a> on Friday night along the Harare-Bindura highway when a haulage truck ferrying fertilisers from Beira to Bindura veered off the road and overturned.
The accident occurred at the 36km peg along the Harare–Mukumbura Road at around 2000 hours.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), said:
<blockquote>
A motorist who was driving a haulage truck due north with four passengers aboard failed to negotiate a curve, veered off the road to the right, and ran over six pedestrians before the haulage truck overturned and landed on its roof.
As a result, six people, four pedestrians and two passengers died on the spot, while five others, including the driver, were injured.
</blockquote>
ZRP said the names of the victims will be released in due course.

Beverages manufacturer, Schweppes Zimbabwe, says 85 per cent of sales on the domestic market are being conducted in local currency while 15 per cent are done in foreign currency.
Schweppes Zimbabwe chief executive, Charles Msipa, said the company requires US$1.5 million to US$2 million every month to import key raw materials. Said Msipa:
<blockquote>
We continue to sell most of our products in Zimbabwe dollars. Most of our major retail customers sell in Zimbabwe dollars and also pay in local currency.
</blockquote>
Msipa said it was not Schweppes’ policy to demand payment exclusively in US dollars.
He said they export some of their products such as Mazoe Orange Crush, to regional countries that include South Africa, Zambia and Botswana, where they get some of their forex.
Meanwhile, Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CRZ) president Denford Mutashu claimed some retailers were entering into agreements with manufacturers for payments in forex.
Under the agreements, buyers (retailers) will pay significantly less when they pay using US dollars than they would pay when using Zimbabwe dollars. Said Mutashu:

The practice is rampant and is informed by the requirement to source foreign currency by corporates internally without having to increase traffic to the auction market.
Quite a number of companies have resorted to that and you may also have realised that a number of products are no longer available due to the limited availability of foreign currency.

'Schweppes Selling Mostly In RTGS Dollars'

Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited has issued a statement explaining why the colour of its flagship fruit juice, Mazoe Orange Crush product differ in colour.
The statement was a response to a query on microblogging site Twitter, by one Rumbidzai Matinga who was concerned that the difference in colour may give rise to counterfeits.
In the statement, Schweppes said:
<blockquote>RESPONSE ON THE MAZOE ORANGE CRUSH COLOUR VARIATION FEEDBACK
We note concerns around a colour variation on Mazoe Orange Crush and would like to assure our consumers after investigations that the product is, in fact, genuine and simply a result of the usual difference in fruit juice batches used in production from season to season.
We pride ourselves on the use of natural unmodified juice to allow our consumers to enjoy the best of nature’s offering. This will sometimes lead to variation in the colour of the final product.
We would like our valued customers to know that the quality and taste of Mazoe Orange Crush remains unchanged.</blockquote>

Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited has hiked the price of the popular Mazoe beverage as well as other products. Consumers will now have to fork out a staggering $18.00 at the least to get a $2 bottle of Mazoe.

Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited has increased the retail price for a 2 litre bottle of Mazoe Orange Crush to $4 from $3,20.
In a statement, Schweppes said the price increase was prompted by rising costs of key imported ingredients. Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>Owing to an increase in the price of manufacturer grade sugar effective November 2018, as well as an increase in costs of local juice, consumables and spare parts, Mazoe orange crush pricing will be adjusted from current recommended retail price of $3,20 to $4,00 per 2l unit effective 7 November 2018.</blockquote>

Mazoe Orange Crush Price Increases

Schweppes Zimbabwe has assured the public that Mazoe concentrated drinks are safe for human consumption and do not contain any ingredients that may be harmful to health.
This comes after Zambian media reports revealed that health authorities in that country were investigating Mazoe concentrated juice on allegations that it was not fit for human consumption and does not meet the national food and safety standards.When contacted for a comment by The Chronicle, Schweppes Zimbabwe marketing and public affairs director Mrs Unaiswi Nleya-Nyikadzino said she is aware of the Zambian probe, but is not sure what triggered the investigation. Said Nleya-Nyikadzino:
<blockquote>Mazoe is produced with only specifically approved ingredients that meet all the local regulatory requirements and adheres to the strictest safety, quality requirements. Additionally, Mazoe has obtained the relevant approvals as provided for by the laws of the Republic of Zambia. We therefore have full faith and confidence in the safety and quality of Mazoe and we will continue to work collaboratively with the authorities where required.</blockquote>

Mazoe Safe For Human Consumption: Schweppes Assures Customers

Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited donated 1 200 litres of Mazoe orange crush as a belated birthday gift to President Robert Mugabe on Monday. The gift was presented by Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited managing director Mr. Charles Msipa who said the company is grateful to the government for the various facilities that their company has benefitted from.
Msipa also said that the gift was for the First Family to use and to distribute to various charities that it runs.
