Two illegal gold miners, infamously called Mashurugwi, reportedly fought using dangerous weapons until they killed each other in Zvishavane last week on Monday.
Reports indicate that the fight between Tapfumaneyi Muza (28) of Hwinya Village, Chief Nhema and Gilbert Dendere (29) was so fierce that onlookers at Dombwe Business Centre fled into the bushes to hide.
The onlookers only returned to the scene after the noise died down and were shocked to see the two protagonists lying on the ground side by side, dead.
Muza had been released from prison on bail for attempted murder three days before the fatal fight.
He was represented in his bail application by Abitar Mugari of Pamacheche, Gundu and Dube Legal Practitioners.
According to a police memo seen by The Mirror, on 28 November 2022, at 9 PM at Dombwe Business Centre, Dendere who had a grudge against Muza approached the latter and they started fighting.
Muza allegedly stabbed Dendere with a Columbia knife several times in the chest and in retaliation, Dendere stabbed Muza in the neck and struck him with an axe on the left ear resulting in the deaths of the two.
Police were called to the scene and they collected the bodies.
Muza was previously arrested for stoning a police officer on duty at Dombwe and stabbing him with a knife three times.

Two "Mashurugwi" Fight Each Other Until They Both Drop Dead

A 60-year-old Chinese man who was working at a mine in Inyathi under Bubi District, Matabeleland North province, was killed by a group of men believed to be illegal gold panners.
Jianhua Liu reportedly had a heated argument with the illegal gold panners at his workplace at around 9 PM on Sunday last week.
The men reportedly attacked him with an iron bar leaving him with a swollen head and bruises on the neck, chest and hands.
The illegal gold panners allegedly robbed Jianhua of an undisclosed amount of cash.
His condition deteriorated and he was ferried to Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo for medical attention and was admitted to intensive care.
Jianhua’s chest was swollen and he was operated on but passed away the following day.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson in Bulawayo ProvinceInspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and said they were carrying out investigations to arrest the suspects. He said:

Chinese Man Attacked, Killed In Zimbabwe

30 Mashurugwi ( Machete-Wielding Gangs) that wreaked havoc at Mount Royal Business Centre, Fort Rixon on September 19 have attracted the attention of the Zimbabwe Republic Police which announced that they are hunting for the infamous gang members, the Daily News reports.
This was revealed by ZRP National spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who said they are looking for MaShurugwi who made a scene in Fort Rixon a few days ago. Said Assitant Commissioner Nyathi:
<blockquote>Police in Fort Rixon are hunting down 30 men involved in public violence at Mount Royal Business Centre, Fort Rixon on September 19 at about 1200 hours. The unidentified suspects who are believed to be illegal gold panners from Nkayi armed themselves with axes, machetes and stones before assaulting everyone at the business centre and setting alight two tuckshops.
A Nissan Caravan belonging to the suspects was burnt in the melee. As at September 23, the police made a total of 51 725 arrests on operation Chikorokoza Ngachipere/ Isitsheketsha Kasiphele and No to Machete Gangs. Members of the public are warned from illegal mining activities throughout the country,</blockquote>
50 000 people have reportedly been arrested in the operation meant to curb marauding activities that were being carried out by infamous MaShurugwi who late last year <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/12/30/mashurugwi-clubs-a-cop-to-death-in-a-suspected-revenge-mission/">attacked and killed ZRP Officer Constable Wonder Hokoyo.</a>

ZRP Looking For 30 MaShurugwi That Wreaked Havoc At A Business Center In Fort Rixon

ZRP In Shurugwi arrested a group of machete wielding robbers who had invaded Tebekwe Mine in Shurugwi, The Herald reports.
The gang popularity known as Mashurugwi had disarmed the security guard at the mine and they were reportedly advancing towards the mine’s milling plant where they wanted to steal gold according to the publication,
The publication quoted the mine manager Thamsanqa Maseko who reportedly narrated the incident and said:
<blockquote>The illegal miners were armed with iron bars and machetes and threatened to harm everyone at the mine. They ordered the milling plant to stop running and declared that they were taking over the mine.
They were about 50, the majority armed with machetes and iron bars, said Mr Maseko. They went around the mine’s milling plant singing and stressing that they were taking over the mine.
We did not know that there was another group, which had attacked the security guards at the mine entrance.
Police swiftly responded to their emergency calls and arrived at the scene to find the two security guards, including the one who was in handcuffs, being assaulted.
Upon seeing a police truck, the illegal miners fled in different directions, but police managed to arrest eight of them</blockquote>
One of the guards was stabbed near the ear in the incident and he is reportedly admitted at a hospital in Shurugwi. The incident was confirmed by Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko.

ZRP Arrests 8 MaShurugwi Who Had Invaded Tebekwe Mine

The Minister of State for National Security in the President’s Office, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Owen_Ncube" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Owen Ncube</a> said that only one MaShurugwi gang is still to be accounted for, with the rest having been arrested.
Ncube said this while responding to a question from Senator Bekithemba Mpofu in the Senate last week on what his Ministry is doing about the machete-wielding gangs. Said Ncube;
<blockquote>I would like to thank the Hon Member for asking such a pertinent question. The issue of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MaShurugwi</a> has been dealt with. I think we are only left to account for one group.
All the other groups have been arrested. They have appeared in court and some of them have been sentenced. I thank you.</blockquote>
The MaShurugwi menace reached its zenith towards the end of 2019 as the violent machete-wielding thugs attacked and robbed people across the country.
In one incident, a machete-wielding gang hacked a police officer to death in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kadoma" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kadoma</a> after his colleagues fled for dear life.

'Only One MaShurugwi Gang Yet To Be Accounted For'

Several police officers were arrested at Jumbo Mine for illegal gold mining or being part of the machete-wielding gangs, commonly referred to as <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MaShurugwi</a>.
The arrests were confirmed by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
Nyathi was speaking on the sidelines of a media training on community reporting organised by the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) on Wednesday in Harare. He said:
<blockquote>We have had arrests in Jumbo, Mazowe and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Shamva" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Shamva</a> of illegal artisanal miners. I admit we have arrested (police) officers at Jumbo, the law will take its course.
Nyathi refused to comment on arrests of members of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Army" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA</a>) and Prisons, who are thought to be involved in the ongoing gold rush on disused mines.</blockquote>
Over 2 800 illegal gold miners have been arrested since police launched Operation Chikorokoza Ngachipere.
Earlier this week 13 police officers, including a chaplain, were nabbed while trying to extort money from illegal miners they had been sent to arrest in Chakari.

Cops Who Were Part Of MaShurugwi Syndicates Arrested

The Vice President, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Constantino_Chiwenga">Constantino Chiwenga</a>, speaking at the national prayer said while the government was working towards maintaining peace and order and avert the threat posed by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi">MaShurugwi</a>, prayer and evangelical crusades could also help in providing support, The Daily News reports.
Said the VP:
<blockquote>A united, prosperous, peaceful and secure Zimbabwe is achievable where people can freely worship and carry out their day-to-day activities with a sense of security and belonging.
While government takes stern measures against those who disturb peace, security and the conduct of business, such as those machete-wielding gangsters and robbers who have emerged, prayers and evangelical crusades can also provide significant complementary support.</blockquote>
On the same meeting, the VP reportedly said the president was in charge and he would ensure that the country remained peaceful.

Mliswa reportedly said:

MaShurugwi Lords Are In High Government Offices - Temba Mliswa

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MDC_Alliance">MDC</a> Youth Assembly has resolved to help security agencies fight terror machete-wielding gangs also known as <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi">MaShurugwi</a> who have terrorised residents in many parts of the country, The Standard reports.
The party said these community resistance committees will be in all districts across the country. This was revealed by the MDC Youth Assembly spokesperson, Stephen Sarkozy Chuma who said:
<blockquote>As a pro-people assembly, it is our duty to make sure that our parents, brothers and sisters are safe from attacks.
As such, the assembly will from next (this) week set up community resistance committees across all districts whose prime mandate is to protect citizens from attacks by Mashurugwi terror gangs.</blockquote>

MDC Youths To Set Up Community Resistance Committees To Help Security Agents Protect Citizens Against Marauding MaShurugwi

Eight unknown men, armed with axes, reportedly killed a 26-year-old artisanal miner at a Supermarket on New Year’s Day.
Police who are already seized with the matter revealed that the miner, Brilliant Dube was axed as he was getting out of a supermarket in Torwood township.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko told the Chronicle that Dube who was on police’s wanted list for assault was brutally murdered.

Eight Axe-Wielding Men "Brutally" Kill Artisanal Miner At A Supermarket

Zimbabwe Republic Police revealed on Sunday that they shot and killed a member of a machete gang known as Mashurugwi or Al Shabab in Bulawayo after they freed their colleague from custody by force in Matebeleland.
The development was revealed yesterday by police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who said:
<blockquote>There was an incident in Mphoengs (in Matabeleland South) on January 3, where a machete-wielding gang teamed up with some unruly elements to free a robbery, unlawful entry and theft suspect, Nkosana Moyo, from police custody.
The gang attacked police officers and injured one in the process. During the scuffle, police fired some shots, resulting in one suspect aged 35 being shot and passing on at a local hospital.
The released suspect, Nkosana Moyo, only handed himself over to the police on Saturday while still in police handcuffs.</blockquote>
The development comes when calls to deal with the machete gangs in the country have intensified in the recent past.
The machete gangs have been terrorising miners and members of the public across the country, particularly in gold mining towns.

Human Rights Commission Condemns Brutal Murder Of Police Officer By MaShurugwi Thugs {Full Text}

A Machete-Wielding group known as “Team Barca” which were formally led by the<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/11/16/mashurugwi-gang-leader-shot-dead-in-chegutu/"> gang leader who was killed in a gun exchange with the police near David Whitehead last month</a> fatally hacked and clubbed a police officer at Battlefields mine on Saturday The Herald reports.
The officer, Wonder Hokoyo (27) and his colleague who was seriously injured in the attack, were defending Good Hope Mine workers from a marauding gang armed with machetes and logs and catapults.

MaShurugwi Kill Police Officer In Suspected Revenge Mission

Justice Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ziyambi_Ziyambi">Ziyambi Ziyambi</a> in an interview with VOA clearly stated in Shona that ZRP has been given the green light to shoot machete welding Mashurugwi.
Ziyambi justified the decision to shoot MaShurugwi and likened the Machete Welding gangs to terrorists and said no one sympathises with terrorists.

Ziyambi Orders ZRP To Shoot Machete-Wielding MaShurugwi

A Member of Parliament has denied claims that violent machete gangs terrorising people across the country, the infamous <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MaShurugwi</a>, are from Shurugwi, a district in the Midlands Province.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Temba_Mliswa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Temba Mliswa</a>, who represents Norton as an Independent legislator, is convinced that people from Shurugwi are not violent as it is his home area. He said:
<blockquote>I am from Shurugwi and the Shurugwi people do not behave like that.
I would also like to clarify that they are called ‘Mashurugwi’ because there was a lot of illegal mining in Shurugwi.
I would like to protect the people that I lead as a village head that the Shurugwi people are great people. They do not do machetes.</blockquote>
Some reports suggest that machete gangs are sponsored by some powerful politicians, with Home Affairs Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kazembe_Kazembe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kazembe Kazembe</a> on Thursday threatening arrest on those behind MaShurugwi.
Midlands Provincial Affairs Minister, Larry Mavima recently warned that if the machete violence is not dealt with, it will degenerate into civil strife.

A Member of Parliament has called for authorities to deal decisively with violent informal gold miners known as <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MaShurugwi</a>.
Temba Mliswa, an Independent MP who represents Norton, said that decisive action should be taken against the marauding criminals who are fomenting violence in mining areas.
Writing for the Chronicle, Toby Sithole has attempted to explain the origins of this group of violent thugs. He said:
<blockquote>One school of thought says these machete-wielding criminals originated from Shurugwi, about 350 kilometres south of Harare, thus earning themselves the moniker MaShurugwi.
They became infamous for engaging in fights for very small arguments in the mines, (claims, women or high school rivalries) they would use shovels and picks to fight or kill each other.</blockquote>
There is fear that if the Mashurugwi menace is not nicked in the bud as a matter of urgency, the international community might classify Zimbabwean gold as “blood gold”.
MaShurugwi is reportedly active in parts of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mazowe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mazowe</a> and Guruve in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mashonaland_Central" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mashonaland Central province</a> where they terrorising settlers and farmers.
