National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) board chairperson Martin Dinha has implored the government to subsidise the urban commuter train service to enable the parastatal to continue serving members of the public.
Dinha said this in a speech read on his behalf during the launch of the third edition of the NRZ National Safety Week, which is also commemorated by Southern Africa Railway Association members.
The theme for the commemorations this year was “Be Vigilant around Tracks, Trains are fast but too slow to stop”. Said Dinha:
<blockquote>
Our passenger service, particularly in the commuter trains such as the ones that run in Luveve, Cowdry Park, are never profit-oriented world over but community and social-based. We are basically serving the community.
In conjunction with ZUPCO, we request the government to provide a subsidy for commuter train services which we offer in urban areas.
… We continue to rely on government support to ensure we achieve the objective of turning around the fortunes of this great entity.
As we go into the twilight zone of the turnaround phase, we have been geared for this transformation so that we bring NRZ to its rightful position in terms of influencing our economy.

Dinha expressed concern over the increase in unsafe activities around the railway tracks which include railroad-level crossing accidents, suicides on the tracks, stone throwing, vandalism, illegal gold panning and mining.
He appealed to line Ministries and other government departments to assist the NRZ in protecting the national infrastructure.
The NRZ first introduced commuter trains (commonly known as Freedom Trains) in Harare and Bulawayo in 2001.

Govt Urged To Subsidise NRZ Commuter Service

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a shootout involving National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) board chairman <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Martin_Dinha">Martin Dinha</a> and three suspected armed robbers in Greendale, Harare.
According to a statement posted on the official ZRP Twitter page, the Dinha was armed with a CZ pistol when the shootout occurred at corner Leander and Metcaf Roads around 10.40 PM on Tuesday. Reads the statement:

The ZRP is investigating a shooting incident which occurred on 26/07/22 at around 2240 hours at corner Leander and Metcaf Roads, Greendale, Harare.
Advocate Martin Dinha was involved in a shootout with three robbery suspects who were armed with a machete and a suspected AK47 rifle.
Advocate Dinha’s firearm, a CZ Pistol accidentally discharged resulting in him being shot in the leg.

In an unrelated development, police have confirmed two road traffic accidents that claimed the lives of six people and left dozens injured along Rusape-Nyanga Road just after midnight yesterday. Police said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 50 km peg along Rusape-Nyanga Road after London Stores on 27/07/22 at around 0030 hours.
A Mercedes Benz lorry carrying avocados, bananas and 16 passengers failed to negotiate a curve and landed on its right side.
Six people died on the spot while eight others were injured (one critically and seven seriously).
The injured were taken to Bonda Mission Hospital for treatment. The lorry was on its way to Harare.
Meanwhile, another DDF lorry failed to negotiate a curve along the same road at the 76 km peg at around 0000 hours while carrying avocados, bananas and 17 passengers en route to Harare.
The lorry landed on its right side injuring the 17 passengers, ( five seriously).
The injured were taken to Nyanga District Hospital for treatment.

Martin Dinha Injured During Shootout With Armed Robbers, Police Confirm Incident

Zimbabwe is engaging India for an agreement to import rolling stock as part of continuous efforts to capacitate and revitalise the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_Railways_of_Zimbabwe">National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ)</a>.
A delegation from Zimbabwe comprising government officials and the NRZ is in New Delhi, India to finalise an agreement on the importation of locomotives and wagons, according to <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/zimbabwe-engages-india-on-a-railway-partnership-deal/">ZBC News.</a>
The delegation has since engaged an Indian state-owned company Rites Limited, which is into manufacturing rolling stock.
The firm’s chairman, Mr Raul Mithal confirmed that the engagements are part of a deal that will see them exporting rolling stock to Zimbabwe. Mithal said:

We had intense discussion and we are now in the stage of finalising contracts for the first trench of supplying locomotives, wagons and coaches. This is only the beginning for the export of rolling stock.

NRZ board chairman, Advocate <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Martin_Dinha">Martin Dinha</a> is impressed with the quality of the rolling stock after touring the factory in India. Said Dinha:

We have visited the factories and what we saw impressed us. The industrial capacity dovetails with our requirements back home. We have been lagging behind in terms of modernisation, yet NRZ is a key player in our economy.

The deal involves the import of nine locomotives, 350 wagons and DMU passenger coaches.
At the moment, NRZ has dilapidated wagons most of which were bought during the Smith regime. The rail network is also in bad shape.

NRZ In Deal To Import 350 Wagons, 9 Locomotives From India

The National Railways of Zimbabwe has said that it signed a new deal with Union Wagons of Russia on Tuesday for the supply of wagons and locomotives.
NRZ board chairman Advocate Martin Dinha is optimistic that the deal which shall see Zimbabwe getting 5000 wagons and 70 locomotives will resuscitate the struggling NRZ. He said:
<blockquote>The deal involves the capacitation of NRZ, as you are aware we have had capacity problems over the years and now we want to acquire rolling stock and rolling stock involves locomotives and wagons.
We signed a deal with (Union) Wagons (of Russia), the largest wagon manufacturing company in Russia and we are going to get delivery of 100 wagons starting in January (2020); prototypes specially designed for our conditions in Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
Dinha added that NRZ has since secured US$10 million required for the 100 wagons that are expected in the country by January next year.
Meanwhile, NRZ is struggling to meet demand emanating mainly from agriculture and mining industries.
The public transport system in Zimbabwe is collapsed and the resuscitation of the NRZ can be a relief to members of the public who bear the brunt of high transport costs.

"We Signed A Deal With Union Wagons Of Russia," NRZ

Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr. Misheck Sibanda has announced that President Mnangagwa has, with effect from May 1, appointed Dr Agnes Mahomva, Mr. Simon Masanga, and Advocate Martin Dinha for public offices.
Sibanda said in a statement:
<blockquote>The Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet is pleased to announce that His Excellency the President has, in terms of Section 205 (1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (Number 20) Act 2013, appointed Dr Agnes Mahomva as the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health and Child Care and Mr Simon Masanga as the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare.
The appointments of Dr Mahomva and Mr Masanga as permanent secretaries are with effect from 1st May, 2019.

Dr Mahomva was appointed the new Permanent Secretary for Health and Child Care to replace Dr Gerald Gwinji who is yet to be reassigned.
Mr Masanga, a senior public administrator, has been appointed Secretary for Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, replacing Dr Judith Kateera.
Former Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Advocate Martin Tafara Dinha is now the new board chairman for the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ). Adv Dinha holds a law degree from the University of Zimbabwe and practiced law for 12 years in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia. He replaced Major General Douglas Nyikayaramba, who is now a diplomat.

ED Makes New Appointments

Mashonaland Central Provincial Minister, Advocate Martin Dinha urged people in his province to vote for him so that he continues being in power. 
Dinha said this while officiating at the celebrations of attaining Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by communities in Murwira, Muganhi, Chihuri, Mutasa A and Mutasa B Villages in Hwata ward of Muzarabani District. Said Dinha:

In an interview with NewsDay, Zanu-PF Mashonaland Central youth leader Isaiah Mandaza accused Provincial Affairs minister Martin Dinha of blocking the youth league from holding meetings in preparation for President Robert Mugabe’s rally.
Said Mandaza:
<blockquote>Right now, we are supposed to have an executive meeting on Wednesday (tomorrow) in preparation for another meeting with our provincial political commissar (Innocent) Hamandishe, but they are refusing to give us the go-ahead. We are booking meetings, but we are not being cleared. The youth league and women’s league were told to convene meetings. It’s only the main wing that was stopped. The provincial minister is also causing us not to do meetings. It’s about three meetings now that have been called off. However, on Wednesday, we will continue with our meeting. There could be disturbances if they try to deny us the right to having our meetings. We need to prepare for the coming of our President. What they want is to blame us for shambolic preparations when the President comes, but it is them who are throwing spanners.</blockquote>
When contacted for comment yesterday, Dinha denied the allegations.

Dinha accused of blocking Zanu-PF Mash Central youth league from preparing for Mugabe's rally

Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Minister Advocate Martin Dinha has alleged that Zanu-PF National Political Commissar Saviour Kasukuwere is working together with South African Julius Malema to topple President Mugabe. Malema is the leader of the opposition party the Economic Freedom Fighters and he once incurred the wrath of the government after<a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/news/2017/01/23/malema-calls-mugabe-let-go-tells-grandpa-enough/"> he told President Mugabe to go saying “Grandpa, It’s Enough”</a>
Said Dinha to the Sunday Mail,
<blockquote>During the meeting convened by Advocate Jacob Mudenda’s probe team, I submitted the allegation that Cde Kasukuwere is working with Julius Malema because they both share the ambition to take over power from Presidents Mugabe and Zuma respectively.
..I  know for certain that his younger brother … travels to South Africa frequently as he is the point person for the interactions with Malema because of his links there.
Kasukuwere and Malema see themselves in the same light. They want to run with the idea that the youth are the leaders of tomorrow and tomorrow is today. This is the problem I have had with Cde Kasukuwere because he wants to take over the country now.</blockquote>
Dinha added that he will stand by his allegations and that he is not worried by the fact that KAukuwere had sued his, saying he will face him in court.
<blockquote>I am prepared to defend all allegations against me in court, even though the papers have not been served to me. I do not hold anything personal against Kasukuwere. His strategy of going to court is to try and (dodge) his problems as if it’s a personal fight between him and I.</blockquote>

Kasukuwere now alleged to be working with Julius Malema to topple President Mugabe

Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Minister Martin Dinha, who is said to be close to the First Family has urged Zanu-PF national political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere to resign stating that the issue is is no longer a small one as there are superior forces behind calls for his ouster.
Dinha said this while speaking to Daily News:
<blockquote>This is not a small matter because zvine vanhuvakuru izvi (superior forces) who are involved. He (Kasukuwere) should do what I said before. He should just resign and maybe then manage to live and fight another day. After all, the president is a very forgiving man.</blockquote>
Meanwhile Manicaland Province deputy chairperson Jospeh Mujati said the party’s provincial executive will pass a vote of no confidence in Kasukuwere.

Martin Dinha urges Kasukuwere to resign

Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Minister Martin Dinha suggested that rebellious war veterans must be captured, stripped and beaten at army barracks for opposing President Robert Mugabe. Dinha even volunteered to do some of the beatings.
Said Dinha:
<blockquote>People here (Mashonaland Central) support ZANU-PF and President Mugabe, they are not like rogue war veterans and some youths who are moving around attacking the President and the First Lady,” said Dinha in an audio clip in possession of this publication.
They should all be rounded up and taken to army barracks where they should be stripped and beaten thoroughly until they repent. We cannot tolerate the level of indiscipline that they have exhibited,” he is further heard saying, drawing applauses from some people present at the meeting.
We have senior military people here, I think they are listening. I can even volunteer to do some of the beating if they require my services</blockquote>
However, when contacted by the Financial Gazette, Dinha said the comments were not to be taken seriously as they were meant to captivate the crowd.

Rebellious war veterans must be beaten for opposing President Mugabe: Minister Dinha

Zanu-PF Mashonaland Central provincial executive has organised a demonstration against Zanu PF political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere. The demonstration will be held in Bindura tomorrow. Kasukuwere and his brother Dickson Mafios are alleged to be “plotting to topple” President Mugabe. The province wants Kasukuwere and Mafios kicked out from the party for this charge.
Zanu-PF Central Committee member from Mashonaland Central, Advocate Martin Dinha revealed that the province has already resolved to kick out Kasukuwere and all that remains is for the party to follow the legal process of kicking him out.
Said Dinha:
<blockquote>The provincial leadership has already rejected Kasukuwere and Mafios. What remains now is due process.</blockquote>
A senior party member who spoke to the Sunday News said:
<blockquote>We are fed up with Saviour! He is a bully who is always intimidating party members especially those who go against his wishes. It is known that as PC, Kasukuwere has fired more people from the party compared to those he has recruited . . .
They have now established what we know here as the ‘Matope Brothers’. The Matope area is where Saviour and Mafios come from, and their clique is terrorising people here. Cases of violence against fellow party members is rampant in his constituency. People in the party are living in fear all the time. He is bringing the party down everyday. His brother, Mafios, has some personal issues that people here do not agree with.</blockquote>
