Chief Timothy Munorowazve Muusha of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chimanimani/">Chimanimani</a> in Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe has reversed his decision to fine two <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Citizens%27_Coalition_for_Change/">Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)</a> activists for refusing to vote for the ruling party, Zanu PF, during the 23 August 2023 elections.
The chief had initially ordered the activists to pay a fine of three goats each. However, following the publication of the story by <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/https-www-newzimbabwe-com-chief-muusha-reverses-controversial-decision-to-fine-ccc-activists-for-refusing-to-vote-for-zanu-pf/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> and the intervention of lawyers from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Lawyers_for_Human_Rights/">Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)</a>, the chief dropped the charges and declared that the activists had no case to answer.
Solomon Tambwera, one of the activists, expressed his lack of surprise at the chief’s decision, stating that they had not committed any offence in the first place. Tambwera mentioned that the chief did not provide any reasons for withdrawing the charges but instructed his secretaries not to handle any political-related cases in the future. Tambwera said:
<blockquote>
We were not shocked or surprised when the Chief on Saturday announced that we had no case to answer. In the first place, the Chief was not supposed to have summoned us to his court, for exercising our Constitutional rights. We knew we were being victimised for supporting CCC. Instead of demoralizing us, this incident actually bolstered us. The Chief did not explain why he reversed his earlier decision but grudgingly simply said the case is closed. He said in future we should not provoke each other

The activists thanked NewZimbabwe.com and ZLHR for bringing attention to their situation and representing them. Tambwera said:
<blockquote>
A lot of citizens’ rights are being trampled upon every day in rural areas. Had it not been the coverage and intervention of ZLHR we could have unnecessarily lost our livestock. We are really grateful to New Zimbabwe.Com for exposing this chicanery.
</blockquote>
For years, there have been claims that traditional leaders, including chiefs and village heads, have been actively involved in campaigning for the ruling party, ZANU PF, in Zimbabwe. It has been alleged that these leaders have compelled their subjects to attend ZANU PF rallies and vote for the party. In return, the government of ZANU PF has provided them with various benefits, such as cars and the electrification of their homes.
Such actions by traditional leaders are unconstitutional according to the Zimbabwean constitution which upholds the principles of political neutrality and prohibits traditional leaders from engaging in partisan politics. Traditional leaders are expected to remain impartial and serve all members of their communities without bias towards any political party.
Despite these constitutional provisions, some traditional leaders, including Chief Fortune Charumbira, have openly declared their support for ZANU PF, which raises concerns about their adherence to the constitutional requirements. This open display of political affiliation by traditional leaders goes against the principles of fairness, impartiality, and equal treatment of all citizens.
Chief Nhlanhlayemangwe Felix Ndiweni, one of the traditional leaders known for openly criticising the ZANU PF government, was removed from his position by President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> on November 30, 2019. This led some to believe that it was in response to his criticism of the government. Ndiweni had previously clashed with government officials over issues such as Gukurahundi, sanctions, and land claims.

Chief Muusha Reverses Decision To Fine Two CCC Activists For Not Voting For ZANU PF

Rescue operations are underway in Penhalonga, Manicaland province, to locate the bodies of two illegal miners who are feared dead after a mine shaft collapsed on Wednesday.
James Mupfumi, Director of the Centre for Research and Development, confirmed the search and revealed that open-cast alluvial gold mining was taking place along the Mutare River in Penhalonga.
Mupfumi stated that a representative from Chief Mutasa had conducted a ritual at the site seeking guidance, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200015529/2-illegal-miners-feared-dead-as-mine-collapses">NewsDay</a> reported. He added:
<blockquote>
We discovered that there is an open cast alluvial gold mining taking place in Mutare River, where Russians were stopped by the government in 2013. There are some well-known politically connected individuals who own the mine.
</blockquote>
Clinton Masanga, Director of the Penhalonga Youth Development Trust, expressed deep sorrow over the mining disaster, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to determine the causes of the collapse and hold those responsible accountable. Masanga said:

It is imperative that a thorough investigation is conducted to determine the causes of collapse, identify any negligence or misconduct and hold those accountable to book.
The political and environmental factors surrounding the tragedy demand urgent attention and action. By addressing the shortcomings in regulation, accountability and community engagement, we can strive for a safer and more sustainable future for mining operations.
</blockquote>
Manicaland Provincial Mining Director, Elton Shingirai Makumbe, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations were underway.
Over the years, Zimbabwe has witnessed numerous incidents of disused mine collapses, as artisanal miners endure challenging conditions in pursuit of precious metals. Despite the risks, they argue that life’s hardships push them to prioritise potential rewards over safety.

Search For Two Illegal Miners Continues In Collapsed Mine Shaft In Penhalonga

Two more people are said to have died at Redwing Mine in Penhalonga, Manicaland, where <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Pedzai_Sakupwanya">Pedzai Scott Sakupwanya</a>’s Better Brands has reportedly continued conducting secret mining operations. 
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200008867/2-more-die-at-ed-allys-mine">NewsDay</a>, two more artisanal miners died on Monday.
The mine was closed in January by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) over fatal accidents involving artisanal miners.
Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed that two more deaths were reported on Monday. Muzondo is quoted as saying:
<blockquote>
Police confirm the sudden death by trapping in Penhalonga on March 13, 2023, of Hardlife Dzamiti (21) of Chiware village under Chief Nyashanu, Buhera, who entered into a mine shaft 8 metres deep. While inside, a mudslide fell into the mineshaft, trapping him.
On the same day, Joshua Ncube from Harare died of suffocation. Police said the now-deceased Ncube was in the company of Terrence Magwara in a 13-metre deep mineshaft when he developed some difficulties in breathing and died.
Mine deaths occur almost occasionally, the frequency is high because we have illegal miners who are sneaking into disused shafts. As police it is our call to those who are sneaking into the mineshafts to desist because the soils are loose because of the incessant rains.
</blockquote>
James Mupfumi, the director of the Centre for Research and Development said they were worried about recurrent deaths at Redwing Mine. He said:
<blockquote>
Perpetrators of slave labour in mining pits at Redwing Mine are behind gold smuggling, tax evasion and environmental degradation and loss of lives in Penhalonga and we are worried.
</blockquote>
Centre for Natural Resource Governance director Farai Maguwu urged authorities to stop “unsafe mining that is happening at the mine.”

Two More Die At Scott Sakupwanya's Mine As Secret Mining Continues

The ruling <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_African_National_Union_-_Patriotic_Front">ZANU PF</a> has suspended its Manicaland women’s league leader Happiness Nyakuedzwa for alleged failure to abide by party policies, rules and regulations. 
ZANU PF women’s league boss <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mabel_Chinomona">Mabel Chinomona</a> wrote to Nyakuedzwa notifying her of the suspension after she reportedly disputed elections held recently in the province.
It is alleged that Nyakuedzwa also insulted the party’s secretary for external affairs, Betty Kaseke, during chaotic party elections, according to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200007087/zanu-pf-suspends-bigwig">NewsDay.</a>

In a letter dated February 2, Chinomona suspended Nyakuedzwa for 21 days from carrying out party activities pending investigations. The letter read:

Take note that the national leadership has resolved to issue you with a prohibition order pending the hearing of your case as per attached charge sheet. As such, you are provisionally barred from taking in any party activity for the next 21 days pending inquiry into the allegations levelled against you. Further take note that you have the right to be assisted in the conduct of your case by a member of the party of your choice in terms of article 10 section 75 of the party constitution.
Be advised that your matter will be heard at the Zanu PF headquarters 21 days after receipt of this letter.
It is alleged that you disrupted elections which were officiated by national secretary for external affairs in the women’s league, comrade Betty Kaseke. On the day of the elections, the report outlines how you allegedly insulted and threatened comrade Kaseke and incited violence against elections officials.
</blockquote>
Other crimes include tearing election ballot papers and imposition of members to fill vacant positions.

ZANU PF Suspends Senior Official

The late Brigadier General Charles Kaneta, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/senior-zimbabwe-defence-forces-official-collapses-and-dies/">who collapsed and died</a> on Saturday has been declared a national hero. 
He was 64.
In a statement seen by <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/brigadier-general-kaneta-declared-national-hero/">ZBC News</a>, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said Kaneta’s death came as a shock as he showed no signs of ill-health and was on a routine visit to his rural home in Honde, Manicaland Province at the time of his death.
He said Kaneta’s death is a great loss to the nation, and the Defence Force, whose crop of wartime field commanders is gradually being whittled down.
Kaneta, whose Chimurenga name was Santana Tongai, joined the liberation struggle in 1975 in Mozambique at the age of 17.
He later became a graduate of the Nanjing Military Academy in China, as well as a beneficiary of specialised military training in Syria.
President Mnangagwa described the late Brigadier as a tough and brilliant military instructor through whose hands passed many cadres, including senior ZANU PF party officials such as the late National Hero Herbert Ushewokunze, late Crispen Mandizvidza and Dr Sidney Sekeramayi.
Kaneta was attested in 1981 into the integrated Zimbabwe National Army.
He is survived by his wife, Amai Kaneta and children.

The Late Brigadier Kaneta Declared National Hero

The ruling ZANU PF has reportedly suspended Buhera district co-ordinating committee (DCC) chairperson Cosmore Chimombe over intra-party violence that erupted in the district two weeks ago.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200000377/zanu-pf-official-suspended-over-violence">NewsDay Zimbabwe</a> reports that the violence was recorded during the party’s district restructuring exercise to establish party cell structures in Chimombe East, Chimvuri and Chiremwa.
The party’s national political commissar Mike Bimha had assigned Mashonaland East provincial members to restructure the three districts of Buhera.
However, violence flared and the provincial members were forced to flee for their lives. A report to Bimha seen by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200000377/zanu-pf-official-suspended-over-violence">NewsDay</a> reads:
<blockquote>
After you (Bimha) assigned us on a restructuring exercise, we failed to complete the assignment since the party leadership of the area did not accommodate us. Instead, they instigated violence.
The leader present was DCC chairperson Chimombe among others. As we arrived there were more than 30 people at the party offices. Unfortunately, the co-ordinator on the day had not yet arrived. He later arrived with one Mutero and proceeded without even greeting us, although he noticed that we were visitors.
When we wanted to address the meeting, unfortunately no one wanted to listen to us and they started to sing. The mob became more violent, threatening to beat us since it was in possession of weapons.
We expected the chairman to control the mob but instead, violent threats increased. We managed to escape through the window with the mob in hot pursuit.
</blockquote>
Insiders in the ruling party yesterday said Chimombe has since been suspended over the violence.
Both Chimombe and the party’s provincial chairman Mike Madiro refused to comment on the matter.

Zimbabwe Coronavirus/ COVID-19 Update: 10 October 2021

The Meteorology Services Department(MSD) has released the following weather forecast which states that 5 of Zimbabwe’s Provinces, Masvingo, Manicaland, Midlands, and Matabeleland are likely to receive light showers this week between Sunday 30 August and Tuesday 1 September.
The department further went on to warn people against being outdoors during the showers as it forecasted that lighting and thunder will be a likely occurrence and reminded farmers with winter crops that dry conditions are expected after the showers.
MSD went on to explain that:
<blockquote>A weak cloud band has begun infiltrating the western border of the country, hot, Botswana into both Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South Province. At the same time, relatively cool and moist winds from South Africa are beginning to establish. As such, cloudy, windy and showery episodes are expected on Sunday evening 30 August into Monday 31 August in Matabeleland South, Masvingo, southern parts of the Midlands, Manicaland and Bulawayo Metropolitan into the southern areas of Matabeleland North. These showers may be violent in places (coupled with lightning, hail and strong winds).
Thereafter, the light rains and drizzle should steadily ease off with chilly and cloudy conditions over Matabeleland South, Masvingo, southern parts of the Midlands, Manicaland on Tuesday 01 September 2020.

Matabeleland, Masvingo, Manicaland, Midlands To Receive Light Showers This Week - MSD

The Meteorological Services Department has warned of an impending storm starting today, the Herald reports. According to the publication, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Manicaland_Province">Manicaland</a>, Matabeleland South, Masvingo and southern areas of Midlands could be the most seriously affected.
MSD also warned of hail, strong winds and lightning accompanying the heavy rains which are expected to be over 50 millilitres in some parts of the country.
According to the publication:
<blockquote>The rains will be accompanied by strong winds, lightning, hail and flash flooding.The uprooting of trees and damage to infrastructure cannot be ruled out.
Drains may fail to cope in urban or built-up settings while visibility may be compromised, especially for drivers, during the heavy downpours.
Insecure home roofs, schools and shopping centres could be blown off by strong winds while asbestos roofing could be perforated by hailstones in some instances, potentially endangering occupants.</blockquote>
The 2019/2020 rainy season is coming at a time when the country has been ravaged by a drought that killed over 110 elephants at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hwange_National_Park">Hwange National Park</a> and over <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/27/cattle-dying-like-flies-due-to-drought/">9000 cattle in some parts of the country</a>.

Brace Up For A Storm - MSD

Some women in rural Zimbabwe have become victims of a new form of corruption called s_xtortion when they try to acquire land for cultivation and to build homes.
A victim of the vice, Catherine Mazorodze (37), from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Manicaland_Province" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Manicaland</a> province, told Thomson Reuters Foundation in a phone interview that she consented to s_xual exploitation out of desperation. She said:
<blockquote>The traditional leader of the area told me I was young and not entitled to allocated land since it was meant to benefit the elderly.
He blatantly said if I wanted a piece of land … I had to have s_x with him. Out of desperation and poverty, I agreed to his terms.</blockquote>
Mazorodze revealed that a significant number of women are victims of s_xtortion but are too embarrassed to speak out.
When contacted for comment, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Anti-Corruption_Commission" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC</a>) spokesperson, commissioner John Makamure said the commission will not rely on hearsay but people should bring evidence for the investigations to be launched.

'S_xtortion' Rife In Rural Zimbabwe - Report

The United States yesterday reportedly issued a Withhold Release Order (WRO) for artisanal rough-cut diamonds from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Marange">Marange</a> <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Manicaland_Province">Manicaland</a>. This was due to the fact that they received reports that allege that they are produced under forced labour.
The Newsday reports:
<blockquote>According to a statement released by the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) , diamonds from Zimbabwe, still battling sanctions from the world’s economic power house, have been listed
According to the statement, the action was based on information obtained and reviewed by CBP that indicates that the products were produced, in whole or in part, using forced labour.</blockquote>
Under the US law, it is illegal to imports goods that were produced in part or wholly under forced labour once information of the practice is received linking companies to the practice.

The US Bans Zimbabwean Diamonds

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has moved to stop the eviction of 390 villagers in Mutasa, Manicaland province who have been ordered to leave Chidazembe Farm by the government.
The Ministry of Lands wrote a letter dated March 29, notifying the settlers that their stay on the farm is illegal and had 7 days to vacate the property. The letter reads:
<blockquote>You are hereby given seven days’ notice to vacate Chidazembe Farm in Mutasa district in Manicaland province.
You are violating section 3 of Gazetted Land Act Chapter 20:28, Gazetted Land Act, in that you are occupying the said property without lawful authority.
You are hereby given an eviction notice to vacate the property, failure to vacate before this date will result in your arrest and prosecution.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, ZLHR on Wednesday wrote to the Ministry of Lands arguing that the settlers had no alternative accommodation. ZLHR member, Peggy Tavagadza said:
<blockquote>We write at the instance of our clients, a total of 390 people (90 female adults, 91 male adults and 209 juveniles), whose names are annexed to this letter, kindly note our legal interest.
That on March 29, 2019, officials from your ministry served our clients with a notice of eviction that our clients were duly allocated these pieces of land by the traditional leadership in terms of the Traditional Leaders Act.
They have built houses and they have minor children who cannot soldier the harsh winter. The State despite the demand of request for offer letters has either failed or neglected to provide them with the security of tenure.
… That our clients have nowhere to go, they do not have an alternative accommodation as such the move by the ministry would reduce them to vagrants which we submit is against the spirit of the new Constitution.</blockquote>

<li style="text-align: left;">The rock fell into a nearby depression and split into two pieces.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Two houses in the vicinity developed cracks as a result of the vibrations from the rock fall.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">No one has been injured from this incident.</li>
</ul>
It is advised that the nearby community be on high alert and ensure their safety.

<h3>Manyere Dam on Nyamakati River, Vumba</h3>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: left;">Manyere Dam has been spilling for some time following the heavy rains due to Cyclone ldai.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The continued spilling may have raised concerns for the communities downstream.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">It has since been established that the dam wall is intact and safe.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Water levels are still high from the spill</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Water levels in Nyamakati River are high. Therefore, it is advised to stay clear of the river and be on lookout for danger.</li>

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is advising motorists that some roads in Chipinge and Chimanimani are inaccessible due to the effects of Tropical Cyclone Idai. Through its Twitter page, the ZRP said:

Cyclone Idai: ZRP Notifies Motorists Of Inaccessible Roads In Manicaland

The MDC party has bemoaned the continued harassment of its activists in Zimunya area by armed soldiers since the January fuel protests.
A statement issued by the provincial spokesperson Trevor Saruwaka details the alleged brutal treatment meted on members of the same family by military personnel. The statement reads as follows:

<h4>Heavily armed soldiers abduct the Saunyama brothers</h4>
Robert Saunyama, popularly known as Jack Roberts, of Zimunya Township in Mutare South and his younger brother and Chikanga-Dangamvura’s Ward 6 Councilor, Danmore Saunyama, are reported to have been abducted by ZNA soldiers suspected to be from 3/1 infantry battalion around 2130hrs yesterday.
Jack Roberts is the MDC District Chairman for Mutare South, a constituency he contested for representing the MDC Alliance as a parliamentary candidate in the 30 July harmonised elections.
The soldiers are reported to have arrived in an unmarked Toyota double cab truck. They numbered around 8 and were heavily armed.
They forced their entry into Jack’s house where he was hosting his brother who had visited him with his wife and that of his other brother Jericho. The soldiers started assaulting the wives of the three brothers and their children, together with Clr Danmore.
All this while four soldiers were training their guns on Jack Roberts threatening to shoot him should he attempt to fight them.
The victims of this barbaric military brutality bled profusely and suffered various degrees of injuries.
The soldiers then bundled the two brothers and took them to an unknown destination.
This brutality is coming only there weeks after we buried Noah Sahumbe of Zimunya Township who succumbed to injuries he sustained after beatings by soldiers from 3 Brigade.
Zimunya Township has been a little hell since the stay away disturbances.
What is clear from this incident is that Zimbabwe is descending into a dark period of kidnappings, abductions, beatings, murders and extrajudicial killings.
The dark days of gukurahundi and 2008 run-off killings are upon us once again.
One cannot fail to link the veiled threats by Mr Mnangagwa over the weekend in Masvingo province with this heinous operation.
It’s clear the junta has stepped up the terror campaign against ordinary, peace-loving citizens.
Is this the new dispensation? Clearly, there is nothing new but a continuation of Mugabe’s legacy of brutality.

Angry Zanu-PF Youths in Manicaland are demanding the dismissal of Manicaland youth league chairman, Mubuso Chinguno for allegedly embezzling funds meant for housing stands. Chinguno is also being accused of corruptly awarding his companies tenders to service the stands allocated to the youths by the government. Chinguno has been given an ultimatum to resolve the issues by 15 November. In the event that he fails to do so, the youth will protest against him in Harare.
National youth league executive member Betty Dhliwayo said:
<blockquote>We are saying enough is enough. We heard your grievances (which) you raised today and we will take them further for discussion.
We are giving Mubuso up to November 15 to clean up his mess or face massive protests in Harare.</blockquote>

Zanu-PF Youths Swindled of Cash for Stands By Leader

Zanu-PF Masvingo provincial chairman Ezra Chadzamira yesterday told The Herald that the province will hold an emergency provincial co-ordinating committee (PCC) meeting this weekend to start preparations for President Mugabe’s “Presidential Youth Interface Rallies”. The date for Masvingo’s rally is yet to be confirmed but Mugabe will be in Manicaland on June 16 before visiting Masvingo.
Said Chadzamira:
<blockquote>We will choose from the two venues that we have, that is the Masvingo Showgrounds, where we held the 16th Zanu-PF National Annual People’s Conference in December last year or outside Mucheke Stadium so that all the people we are expecting can be accommodated. Dates for the President’s rally have not yet been confirmed, but we are having an emergency PCC on Sunday that will be attended by party leaders from the province from the Politburo going downwards.</blockquote>
Chadzamira said that they intend on mobilising a record crowd. Agendas for Sunday’s meeting include fund raising and crowd mobilisation.

Zanu-PF Masvingo to hold emergency PCC meeting in preparation for Mugabe's rally

Zanu-PF Manicaland’s provincial co-ordinating committee meeting yesterday passed a vote of no confidence in provincial chairperson and Energy Minister Samuel Undenge. He is accused of being a puppet of his wife Letina. The youths and the women’s league passed a vote of no-confidence against the minister who they allege is failing to control his wife. Letina was accused of railroading other members in the province and forming parallel structures.
Manicaland vice-chairperson, Beauty Benge said
<blockquote>We cannot tolerate the behaviour of Letina Undenge. She is forming parallel structures. We want to win the elections. We are recommending that Undenge be relieved of his post.</blockquote>
Manicaland youth chairperson, Mubuso Chinguno said:
<blockquote>We resolved to pass a vote of no-confidence against Undenge because he is failing to control the province. His wife is everywhere and is causing divisions in the party. The 2018 elections are coming and with Undenge as our chairman it will be difficult for the party because the job is bigger than him</blockquote>
