Shalom Mining has applied to explore oil and gas in Mana Pools, according to a notice in the Zimbabwean Government Gazette.
Mana Pools, which has been designated as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), lies on the southern bank of the Zambezi River that serves as the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The heritage site covers 676 600 hectares, spanning the Mana Pools National Park, Sapi and Chewore Safari areas. Describing Mana Pools on its website, Unesco said:

On the banks of the Zambezi, great cliffs overhang the river and the floodplains. The area is home to a remarkable concentration of wild animals, including elephants, buffalo, leopards and cheetahs.

Shalom has applied for an exploration license over an area of 130 000 hectares and any objections will need to be lodged by 19 May, the Mining Affairs Board said in the notice.
Shalom Mining is a Zimbabwean company, says Chairman Pfungwa Kunaka. Kunaka is also the new Permanent Secretary of Mines.
This comes as Australia-listed Invictus Energy Limited on Monday, 08 May <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/05/08/australian-firm-finds-oil-gas-and-helium-in-zimbabwe/">confirmed the presence of light oil, gas condensate and helium</a> at its Cabora Bassa project in Muzarabani, Zimbabwe.
Invictus Managing Director Scott Macmillan said that mud gas analysis from the Mukuyu-1 well drilled last year had proved the presence of hydrocarbons in multiple reservoir pay zones. 
Some Zimbabweans are, however, sceptical that the natural resources being discovered will transform the lives of the common person given the country’s history of poor governance. 
Zimbabwe is a mineral-rich country but struggles to turn resources into economic success. Reasons include lack of investment, infrastructure, illegal mining, and corruption.

Shalom Mining Has Applied To Explore Oil In Mana Pools

Fastjet Zimbabwe Thursday said it would be introducing flights to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kariba">Kariba</a> and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hwange">Hwange</a> in March 2023 as it accelerates a long-cherished plan to completely network Zimbabwe.
The regional carrier currently services the Harare-Bulawayo route, along with the Harare-<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Victoria_Falls">Victoria Falls</a> one, among its key regional and domestic destinations.
The award-winning airline will be flying from Harare and Victoria Falls to Kariba Airport and Hwange National Park Airport.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, Nunurai Ndawana fastjet Zimbabwe spokesperson said:

We continue to demonstrate our commitment to the growth of tourism and the sustainability of air services in the markets we serve. The addition of these leisure destinations will greatly support our vision.
The Embraer E120 is a robust turboprop aircraft designed for domestic operations, offering customers a pressurised cabin with spacious legroom and overhead baggage space. We intend to align our timings to schedule our flights in such a way that we offer customers the flexibility and convenience of multiple frequencies per day.

Vivian Ruwuya, fastjet Zimbabwe’s Chief Commercial Officer said the introduction of flights to Kariba and Hwange allows visitors in Victoria Falls to explore the wonders of Zimbabwe further by visiting both Hwange National Park and the lake in Kariba. Ruwuya said:

Working closely with our industry stakeholders and partners, including Airports Company of Zimbabwe and the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, we continue to explore ways to further develop the domestic Zimbabwean flight network. We are delighted to announce that our new flights to Hwange and Kariba from our tourism hub of Victoria Falls and our Harare base, will be supported with onward connections on Mack Air / South West Aviation into the Hwange National Park, the lodges of the Kariba eastern basin and the camps and operations in Mana Pools and the lower Zambezi. Mack Air with South West Aviation will be developing a new hub at Kariba, along with their existing hubs in Victoria Falls and Harare to support these seamless connections to and from fastjet’s services.

Kariba and Hwange will add to fastjet’s domestic destinations of Harare, Bulawayo, and Victoria Falls, as well as provide straightforward connectivity for international customers flying in from Johannesburg via Victoria Falls to and from Kariba.
The new flights will be available for booking via the fastjet website, App and usual online trade portals in the coming days.
Kariba town, which sits on the east end of the 300km-long Lake Kariba, has been underserved with scheduled flights for many years.
In 2014, Air Zimbabwe returned to the route after abandoning it in 1996 but pulled out within a year.
Early this year, another airline entered the route, but it has since pulled out.
Hwange, another of Zimbabwe’s key tourist destinations, relies mostly on passengers arriving at the nearby Victoria Falls International Airport.
In July, fastjet also introduced flights between Zimbabwe and Botswana to boost tourism in both countries.
This followed another launch in March of a direct flight between Victoria Falls and Mpumalanga in South Africa.

Fastjet Zimbabwe Announce Additional Flights To Hwange And Kariba

One of Zimbabwe’s leading tourist attractions and home to 350 bird species and large mammals, Mana Pools, is slowly dying due to the effects of climate change.
According to the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife (Zimparks), three pools in the National park dried up during the 2019 drought.
The name Mana Pools was derived from the Shona word “Mana” which means “Four” in reference to the park’s four large pools which are the remnants of ox-bow lakes carved out by the Zambezi River when it changed its course.
Since 1963, Mana Pools has been a protected area known for its four pools namely Green, Chine, Chisasiko and the Long pool which is 7 kilometres.
Zimparks Area Manager for Mana Pools, Edmore Ngosi revealed that since 2019, Chine Pool has been struggling to hold water throughout the year largely due to siltation as a result of land degradation. Said Ngosi:

Since 2019 because of the effects of climate change due to global warming, that is when this pool, Chine Pool dried up together with Green Pool and the Long Pool.
Siltation is taking place, there is a lot of erosion that is taking place as evidenced by the Gullies.
There is a lot of erosion that is taking place in the catchment area and this has resulted in the siltation of the pool and in the process resulting in the low water levels.
Once we start receiving rains, the pool will fill up but around mid-August it loses its water.

Climate Change Hits Mana Pools National Park

According to <a href="https://zimparks.org/index.php/parks/national-parks/mana-pools/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimparks.org</a> Mana Pools offers unique guided and self-guided walks amongst many wild animals, excellent canoeing and river fishing.
<blockquote>It’s an area of outstanding natural beauty and phenomenal wildlife. Here the Zambezi River, flowing slowly eastwards for thousands of years, has left behind the remains of old river channels forming small seasonal ponds and pools spread over an area of several hundred square kilometres.
These extend several kilometres back from the river where on fertile terraces, huge mahogany and acacia trees cast luxuriant shade.
… Lots of zebras, kudu, eland, impala, and other antelope species flourish among which the lion and the leopard, the hyena and wild dogs find easy pickings.</blockquote>
