The Hawks, in collaboration with police and Home Affairs, have arrested six Zimbabweans in connection with illegal mining and money laundering.
The law-enforcement authorities confirmed that six suspects believed to be illegal mining kingpins were arrested in Carletonville and Khutsong during a raid that began in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said:

The Hawks’ Gauteng together with the Department of Home Affairs and other stakeholders are conducting an operation on the illegal mining kingpins’ residences in Carletonville and Khutsong.
Six suspects have been arrested since the early hours of this morning. The multi-disciplinary team is also seizing their luxury vehicles and investigations are still ongoing.
</blockquote>
The police said the six kingpins are all from Zimbabwe, while the fugitive is a Mozambican national. 
The suspects are facing charges of fraud and money laundering as they are believed to be dealing in precious metals purchased from the infamous Zama Zamas for processing and selling them to the next level in the hierarchy. 
A zama-zama (plural zama-zamas) is a person who works illegally in abandoned mineshafts in order to retrieve metals or minerals. Makorokoza or illegal miners in Zimbabwe.
They are expected to appear at the Carletonville magistrate’s court on Wednesday 5 October 2022, on charges of money laundering, dealing in illegal precious metals, and fraud.
Mogale said six transactions were conducted to the value of R500 000.
The Hawks say the suspects’ properties have been seized including luxury vehicles.

South Africa: 6 Zimbabweans Arrested For Illegal Mining, Money Laundering

Syndicates belonging to ZRP and Zanu PF have reportedly cleared off illegal gold panners (a.k.a Makorokoza) who were mining at the gold-rich Wondedzo Hill and have taken over mining at the Hill which is located 23 kilometers away from Masvingo, The NewsHawks reports.
Villagers and other stakeholders in the surrounding areas reportedly told the investigative journalists that Police Officers from the Support Unit last week sealed off the hill and Zanu PF officials and ZRP were either mining themselves or allowing their syndicates to mine.
ZRP officers reportedly moved in and drove away Makorokoza some who had traveled from areas like Kwekwe and Shurugwi, under the guise of restoring order and enforcing the lockdown imposed by the government.
However, The NewsHawks stated that people were seen mining at the Hill last week and Zanu PF Masvingo political commissar Jevas Masosote and members of the women and youth leagues are among those that were seen mining in the area.
When contacted for comment, Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa reportedly said there were no mining activities taking place at the hill and said they investigate the report that had been brought to their attention,

The crime rate in the Midlands has gone up a staggering 33% The Chronicle reports. This revealed at the launch of the Police Provincial Client Service Charter and Midlands Cop of the year awards ceremony at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police">ZRP</a> <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zvishavane">Zvishavane</a> Camp.
Officer Commanding <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Midlands_Province">Midlands</a> Province Commissioner Moses Magandi shed more light on the stats he threw around by saying:
<blockquote>Our crime analysis indicates that general crime increased by 33 percent during the period extending from January to September 2019 as compared to the same period last year. A total of 3 709 cases were received in 2019 as compared to 2 789 received during the same period in 2018.
The increase in crime may be attributed to the influx of artisanal miners from some parts of the country who come into our area searching for precious stones since we are blessed with mineral deposits in the province</blockquote>
The increase in crime according to Comm Magandi is mainly due to fortune seekers known as Makorokoza and machete welding gangs known as <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi">Mashurugw</a>i. However one cannot completely rule out the notion that the economic meltdown in Zimbabwe is also playing a part in the increase in crime rate.

An opinionist in the Sunday Mail has described the govt’s mineral strategic roadmap, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/15/ed-rolls-out-us12-billion-minerals-strategic-roadmap/">which was launched by the president a few weeks ago, to have produced and exported $12 Billion worth of minerals by 2023</a> as a dream if the following fundamentals are not addressed according to him:

<li>… the February 2019 policy by Government, in which miners get only 55 percent of their receipts in foreign currency, has seen much of the gold being diverted to the black market. It is alleged that foreign nationals use runners that buy gold directly from primary gold producers as well as the artisanal and illegal miners, who are dissatisfied with the Government policy</li>
<li>Primary producers also complain that at times, Fidelity Printers take long to release their funds, which causes them to struggle with their operations as the local currency component of the payment is eroded by inflation</li>
<li>Another major problem is the confusion on mining title ownership and title boundaries, something that should have been a thing of the past by now as it was one of the first things that Minister Chitando promised to deal with by putting up the cadastre system</li>
<li>Furthermore, Zimbabwe is under-explored. There is no adequate, official and scientific data on what exactly the belly of the country contains. Judging by this makorokoza menace, it seems there are minerals everywhere in this country. Therefore, it means when Government is negotiating with potential investors, some of whom are already in the country doing some work, they are doing so in darkness.</li>
<li>Electricity is also another major problem that has affected mining operations.</li>

The opinionist also spoke about <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi">MaShurugwi</a> being left unchecked as a serious threat to the mining industry as they pose a serious risk to the societies they operate in.
