Two people were seriously injured when two rival machete-wielding tout gangs clashed at Sakubva Bus Terminus in Mutare on Thursday last week.
According to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/machete-touts-clash-in-cbd/">The Manica Post</a>, armed police officers descended on the rank and fired warning shots in the air to quell the violence.
A witness who requested anonymity told the publication that the clashes escalated to the Harare Old Rank in the CBD where police gunshots and dogs were needed to restore order. Said the witness:

The police had to be called at the Harare Old Rank after a commuter omnibus full of machete-wielding touts arrived from Sakubva Bus Terminus, and a fight broke out between touts stationed at the town rank and their rivals.
We heard that the kombi full of touts came to attack those stationed here because two of them had been injured by some goons at Sakubva Bus Terminus.
It was a scary scene as they were just beating up people indiscriminately along the way. Only police gunshots and dogs managed to stop them.
The others ran away, and the police were still looking for them.

Some touts were arrested and taken to Mutare Central Police Station.

Machete-wielding Touts Clash In Mutare CBD

Norton Member of Parliament, Temba Mliswa (Independent), has pleaded with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who is Acting President, to deploy soldiers in Norton with shoot to kill orders to deal with marauding machete gangs (MaShurugwi).
Mliswa claimed that Norton is becoming a no-go area as residents are being attacked and killed by machete gangsters, with the police apparently unable to deal with the criminals. Said Mliswa:

The Army must get into Norton to avert further loss of lives. We have said this before.
Norton is becoming a no-go area as the ZRP has been overpowered by makorokoza.
Now we don’t know whether they are part of the syndicate or not in light of their poor salaries.
Residents are dying and getting attacked. We cannot have political battles where people are killed.

Mliswa also claimed that the machete gangs are controlled by former State Security Minister Owen “Mudha” Ncube. He said:
<blockquote>
This is the work of Mudha and his gangs. He captures police at the highest level so that nothing happens to his minions.
No one votes for a Gvt that cannot protect its people. If they think this is to target me then they are wrong.
The blood of the people will speak out. They did the same in Kwekwe and the killers of that CCC guy are still free.
… My appeal to Vice President Chiwenga, who is the Acting President, is to deploy soldiers who will shoot to kill. This is unacceptable.

Mliswa Calls For Military Deployment To Tame MaShurugwi Menace In Norton

Machete-wielding gangs (<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MaShurugwi</a>) murdered 27 people in Silobela alone from January 2019 to date.
This was revealed by Home Affairs deputy minister Mike Madiro on Thursday on Thursday while responding to a question by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mashonaland_Central" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mashonaland Central</a> Senator Alice Chimbudzi in the Senate.
Chimbudzi has asked Madiro to explain measures being taken by the government to protect small-scale miners from attacks by MaShurugwi. Madiro responded:
<blockquote>From January 2019 to date, 35 murders with 27 of the cases recorded in Silobela alone, of which six and 20 accused persons respectively were arrested and referred to court.
On this note, it is critical to highlight that none of these crimes occurred at mining sites but they occurred at beer outlets and in homes following misunderstandings and domestic disputes.</blockquote>
Madiro further revealed that a total of 35 murders, 225 robberies, 382 assaults and 15 were committed throughout the country by the machete-wielding gangs.

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Republic Police </a>arrested over 907 illegal miners on Tuesday in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mashonaland_Central" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mashonaland Central Province</a> during an Operation code-named “Chikorokoza Ngachipere, no to machete-wielding gangs”.
The Operation is aimed at ending illegal mining in all gold-rich areas.
Some of the illegal gold miners move around with machetes and rob people of their valuables. The machete gangs infamously or “<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MaShurugwi”</a>, have been implicated in the murder of scores of people across the country.
National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the Operation is in full swing. He said:
<blockquote>The operation covered Jumbo Mine, Shamva and Mazowe Bridge. We managed to recover various property used by these miners which includes water pumps, hammer mills, generators, electric cables, solar panels and explosive fuses.
We managed to recover also three kilograms of mbanje. 18 motor vehicles were also impounded at Jumbo mine during the blitz.</blockquote>

Police Blitz Nets 907 MaShurugwi In Mash Central

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> announced on Tuesday that a further 369 people have been arrested since the beginning of the year for using machetes to commit crimes.
Deputy national police spokesperson Blessmore Chishaka said that since police launched two operations targeting the illegal gold panners and robbers early this year, many machete gangs have been destroyed. He said:
<blockquote>Under the operation ‘No to anarchy by artisanal miners’ we have arrested 248 suspects, while 121 people have also been nabbed under the operation ‘No to dangerous weapons’ — bringing the total to 369.
… as police, we arrest and hand the suspects over to the courts for trial and we do not interfere with the judicial decisions.</blockquote>
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MaShurugwi</a> menace has threatened to spiral out of control in 2019, with the gangs going as far as attacking police officers.
A police officer was murdered on 28 December last year while a police post in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nembudziya" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Gokwe Nembudziya</a> was almost overrun by the MaShurugwi gangs.

Police Dismantle Several MaShurugwi Gangs Countrywide

Outspoken Member of Parliament, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Temba_Mliswa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Temba Mliswa</a>, said that very powerful people, politicians are involved in promoting machete gangs involved in illegal gold mining activities, the so-called <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MaShurugwi</a> violent thugs and because of that, little has been done to end the violence.
Mliswa made the remarks on the sidelines of a visit to his Norton constituency by First Lady <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Auxilia_Mnangagwa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Auxillia Mnangagwa</a>, who made donations to the elderly through her Angel of Hope Foundation. Said Mliswa:
<blockquote>The President has mentioned it in Kadoma and does it take a policeman to be killed for them to act? So many people have been killed. Those lives lost of ordinary Zimbabweans are also important lives so why is that a police officer is dead now and action is being taken now?
This issue must be dealt with and the minister of Justice Ziyambi Ziyambi has been very clear to shoot but how do the police send only three officers to more than 100 people who are dangerous and armed?</blockquote>
The machete gangs recently killed a police officer who was guarding a mine in Kadoma.
In August 2019, a machete-wielding gang is suspected to have killed two soldiers in Bindura.

Police Officers in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Shurugwi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Shurugwi</a> arrested two men in connection with nine cases of robbery committed between December 1, 2019, and January 2020.
The two, Edson Nyathi (24) and Kudakwashe Ndlela (19, and their accomplice who is at large, attacked their victims using machetes and other weapons in Shurugwi. Deputy national police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Blessmore Chishaka said:
<blockquote>In one case, the victim was struck on the head with a machete and sustained a deep cut while three others were stabbed with a knife.
The suspects got away with property and cash valued at $30 800, US$2 900 and six bags of gold ore. On January 2 this year, the police tracked and arrested them at their hideout near Peak Mine in Shurugwi and recovered the weapons used in robberies and some of the stolen property.</blockquote>
There has been an increase in cases of machete-wielding gangs countrywide, the infamous <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MaShurugwi</a>, attacking people and getting away with their valuables.
The gangs also use knives and axes to rob people of cellphones and cash.

Two 'MaShurugwi' Arrested In Shurugwi

Three suspected machete-wielding robbers have taken to court after they allegedly attacked some men in Odzi and robbed them of gold and other valuables worth $42 000.
It is reported that the accused and their accomplices who are still at large pounded on the victims, attacked them and also smashed the car screens of their victims’ car using machetes and Columbian knives.
Reports suggest that one of the accused died after he was shot by one of their victims during the incident.
It is further reported that the accused then took gold and other valuables and fled from the scene when their colleague was shot.
Edmore Sevenzai, Japhet Nhatu and Charles Rutsate were arrested in Kwekwe after one of the victims identified them and tipped off the police.
They appeared before a Mutare court this Friday charged with robbery and were remanded to December 31 for routine remand.

Machete-Wielding Robbers Dragged To Court

News Day guest columnist, Learnmore Zuze has concluded that the machete-wielding gangs that have been killing people in small mining towns have links to prominent people in the country.
Zuze came to the conclusion after considering that the gangs were <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/ed-suggests-stiff-penalty-for-mashurugwi-anyone-found-in-possession-of-machetes/">threatened by the state and president Emmerson Mnangagwa himself</a> but they remain unfazed. He said:
<blockquote>The MaShurugwi groups have terrorised society for a long time now that, naturally, it makes sense to believe that there are elite people behind the defiance of the groups. How else can one explain the fact that well-known murderers can roam the streets freely in a supposed constitutional democracy? </blockquote>
He also observes that the Zimbabwean security forces have the capacity to silence the gangs if they have the will since they have demonstrated their capacity before.
The gangs are also accused of pouring mercury and other dangerous chemicals into Lake Chivero which is a source of water for Harare and Norton, yet, no tangible action has been taken against them.
Meanwhile, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/police-to-be-authorised-to-shoot-mashurugwi-on-sight/">police were recently given permission to shoot the gangs on sight.</a>

"There Are Elite People Behind The Defiance Of Machete-Wielding Groups,"

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Paul_Nyathi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Paul Nyathi</a> said that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an operation targeting illegal mining sites in all provinces.
The operation has so far resulted in the arrest of over 157 people who were involved in conducting illegal mining activities in the past two weeks, with police recovering generators and machetes used by the panners in robberies. Said Asst Comm. Nyathi:
<blockquote>Police in all the provinces has ongoing operations to ensure there is sanity, law and order at various mining sites.
We are also working with various stakeholders like the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ministry_of_Mines_and_Mining_Development" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ministry of Mines and Mining Development</a> during these operations.</blockquote>
The operation follows a sharp rise in criminal activities by gangs of artisanal miners turned machete attackers generally referred to as <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MaShurugwi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">“MaShurugwi”</a>.
The gangs have been accused of murder, rape, assault, housebreaking and stock theft across the country.

Police Launch Countrywide Blitz Targeting MaShurugwi

The police in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mashonaland_Central">Mashonaland Central</a> have moved in on 63 gold panners in a bid to crush the resurgence of Machete wars Newsday reports.
The arrests were confirmed by Officer-commanding Mashonaland Central Commissioner Rangarirai Mushaurwa who said they had managed the situation for now:
<blockquote>We are now on top of the situation; we are in control. We managed to arrest 63 illegal miners last week and we are going to exercise our duties at the mine without fear or favour.</blockquote>
