Farmers and villagers in Macheke, Mashonaland East Province, are living in fear after a lion that escaped from Nyanga was reportedly spotted in the area.
The lion, which crossed the Mupfure River from Manicaland Province into Macheke, was last seen in the Gomba Mushemushe area on Monday.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200035949/macheke-farmers-villagers-live-in-fear-as-lion-roams-around">NewsDay</a> on Friday, Murewa South legislator Noah Mangondo confirmed that the lion had yet to be captured. Said Mangondo:

Nothing tangible so far, last spoor was seen on Monday in Gomba Mushemushe yesterday (Thursday). New rangers from Marondera took over from the Nyanga crew.
The situation is generally calm. Others are making fun of it by creating jokes on social media.
Of course, movement is now limited and we pray that the predator is caught so that normalcy returns in the area.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo, confirmed that the lion is still being tracked and urged villagers to exercise caution. He said:
<blockquote>
The lion, which crossed into Mashonaland East from Manicaland province, is still being tracked and is believed to be around some area in Macheke.
We urge the community in the area to limit their movements, especially at night.
</blockquote>
Farawo further stated that, as of now, the lion has not attacked any livestock or humans.

Roaming Lion Sparks Fear Among Macheke Farmers And Villagers

A 57-year-old woman from Mathula Village in Tsholotsho District is fortunate to be alive after bravely fighting off a lion attack, managing to grab the animal by the throat before it retreated.
Although the encounter left her with serious injuries, Violet Moyo’s quick thinking and strength saved her life.
Moyo, who is currently recovering at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, recounted the harrowing experience to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/watch-brave-woman-57-survives-lion-attack/">Sunday News </a>from her hospital bed.
She sustained lacerations on her arms, face, and body, and winces in pain whenever she shifts her position.
The attack occurred around 6 AM on Thursday as Moyo was on her way to the fields to prepare for the summer cropping season. She said:

I woke up on Thursday morning and bathed my six-year-old grandchild, who I live with. We both left the homestead at 6am with my grandchild headed for school while I was on my way to the fields. He joined his schoolmates, walking a few metres ahead of me.
I heard something roaring, and as I turned, I just saw in a flash an animal attacking me from behind. I fell headlong and all that I was carrying got scattered.
It tried grabbing my throat with its claws but I kept on eluding it until it sank its claws on my left cheek.
I immediately felt the urge to grab its throat and choke it, which I did.

Moyo said she used her right hand to seize what felt like a pipe, holding it tightly until the lion lost its strength. She said:
<blockquote>
I kept holding it by the throat until it lost the urge to fight, and as soon as I let go, it walked away. When it first attacked, I screamed, drawing the attention of the group of pupils walking with my grandchild.
However, I think the attack happened so fast that some of them didn’t even see the animal. Neighbours confirmed they heard the roaring — it was definitely a lion.

Moyo said that lions and leopards have never been spotted in their village before. She said:

This was the first incident. We usually see elephants from time to time, but I believe the drought or food shortage at Hwange National Park has driven animals closer to our community in search of food, leading to human-wildlife conflicts.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) public relations manager Tinashe Farawo confirmed the attack and said authorities are currently tracking the lion to ensure the safety of the community.
Farawo clarified that, despite some believing the animal was a leopard, Zimparks has investigated the site of the incident and confirmed that the tracks and evidence point to it being a lion.

Zimbabwean Woman Survives Lion Attack After Bravely Fighting Off Beast With Bare Hands

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) is offering a reward of US$2,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the recent poaching of three lions in Hwange National Park.
On Tuesday, ZimParks rangers discovered the carcasses of the lions at Nyamandlovu Pan, near Hwange Main Camp. The bodies had been mutilated, with their heads and paws removed.
ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the reward and said all the information will be treated with strict confidence. He can be contacted at 0772433901 for any leads.
Hwange National Park is known for housing Africa’s “Big Five”—lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes.
However, the global population of wild African lions has seen a drastic decline, with estimates now around 23,000, down from approximately 200,000 at the start of the last century, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
In Zimbabwe, the lion population is estimated to be around 2,000.

ZimParks Offers US$2 000 Reward For Information On Lion Killings

Two Village Heads from Dete, Hwange District, Matabeleland North Province, were sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for setting a class one wire snare for trapping a lion.
Elias Nyoni (51) and Zenzo Ndlovu (47) were also ordered to compensate Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management (ZimParks) an amount of US$ 20,000.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), a report was made to the Police on 17 May 2024 following suspicions that a lion might have been killed because the collar tracking signal seemed to be stationary from 12 May 2024 to 17 May 2024 when a report was made. Said the NPA:

The Police and the ZimParks authorities proceeded to the scene to locate the lion but only found the carcass of a donkey and a class one wire snare with lion fur.
Investigations carried out in the illegal resettlements (Muraga) linked the accused persons to the lion. The accused persons led to the recovery of the collar tracker and a class one wire snare used to trap the lion.
The collar tracker was destroyed beyond repair. Further investigations led to the recovery of three sacks of game meat as well as 16 lion claws, and four lion teeth. The lion was valued at US$ 20,000.
</blockquote>
Nyoni and Ndlovu pleaded guilty to the charges and they were sentenced to 12 months imprisonment of which 6 months were suspended for 5 years.
The accused persons were also ordered to compensate ZimParks an amount of US$ 20,000. The class one snares, claws, teeth and game meat were forfeited to the State.

Two Village Heads Jailed For Killing A Lion

A man from Masvingo who was arrested while selling five lion heads valued at US$100 000 was granted US$200 bail by a magistrate.
Patson Ndlovu (32) appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo on Monday facing poaching charges. He will return to court on 18 March for trial.
Allegations are that on 17 February 2024, detectives from CID Flora and Fauna Unit in Harare received information that Ndlovu and his accomplices had five lion heads and were looking for potential buyers.
The detectives swiftly reacted to the information and proceeded to the scene where they observed the accused person and his accomplices approaching the team’s advance party vehicle which was being driven by a detective.
The accused person and his accomplices allegedly entered the vehicle which was parked at Harare’s Baines clinic. The vehicle then drove towards Mazowe Street.
It is further alleged that while observing from a distance, the backup team saw their colleague together with the accused and his accomplices disembarking from the motor vehicle and entering Mazoe Mansions Flats.
After a while, the detectives noticed the accused person carrying a blue and purple bag which he placed at the back of the advance team’s pickup truck.
The detectives then approached the advance team’s car and introduced themselves by producing police identity cards.
They asked the accused person to produce a permit or licence authorising him to possess the lion heads.
The accused failed to produce the documents, leading to his arrest and recovery of five lion heads.

Man (32) Arrested Trying To Sell Five Lion Heads

A sixty-seven-year-old widow from Hwange lost almost her entire herd of cattle and goats overnight to a pride of lions.
Jenifer Khupe, from the Chief Mvuthu area in Matabeleland North’s Hwange West district, said the incident happened on the night of 8 September when she was in the process of selling one of her cows in order to buy food.
Speaking to <a href="https://vicfallslive.co.zw/hwange-villagers-lose-livestock-to-marauding-lions/">VicFallsLive</a>, Khupe said their crops were destroyed by elephants during the previous farming season.
She said a total of seven lions killed seven of her 13 herd of cattle that night and 10 goats. Khupe said:

I was in Plumtree when I received a phone call from my son who told me that lions had killed almost all our livestock.
Our kraal was secured in a way that repels predators. It was secured even at the rooftop, but because these lions are now used to marauding around people’s homesteads even during the day, they have become so daring that they can dig deep to gain entry into the kraals.
My son was sleeping at home and he was awoken by neighbours who heard noise from the kraals and they mobilised themselves to scare the lions away.
</blockquote>
But it was too late to save the livestock from the predators as the villagers found Khupe’s herd of cattle almost wiped out. Said Khupe:
<blockquote>
The lions killed the entire herd of cattle through suffocation and devoured the carcasses, so much that we couldn’t salvage any meat.
As for the goats they just killed seven of them, but left the carcasses untouched.
</blockquote>
A local wildlife conservation organisation bought the cattle carcasses for less than US$150.

Widow Loses 7 Herd Of Cattle, 10 Goats To Lions In One Night

Residents of Mbizo and Msasa suburbs in Kwekwe are living in fear after a local man claimed that he heard a lion roaring while working in his fields.
The man was working in his field along Mvuma road, a few metres away from Eye of the Wild, a sanctuary on the outskirts of Kwekwe.
A message circulation on social media claims the lion is suspected to have escaped from the sanctuary which takes care of orphaned or injured wild animals.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) regional manager, Kwanele Manungo confirmed to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/panic-as-lion-spotted-in-kwekwe-suburbs/">Chronicle</a> having received the alarm.
She, however, said authorities at Eye of the Wild said their one and only lion was still at the sanctuary. Said Manungo:

We are on the ground as we speak as we try to track the lion if indeed it’s there. This is after we received calls that a man heard a lion roar while in his fields so we are trying to ascertain if indeed it’s there, but as of now there are no tracks of the said animal. Meanwhile, we urge residents to remain alert and watch their steps.

Panic As Lion Heard Roaring Close To Kwekwe Suburbs

A 14-year-old girl from Muyondozi village in ward 26 under Chief Garahwa, Chipinge South, escaped death by a whisker on Wednesday after she was attacked by a stray lion.
The girl’s father, Hunesu Chiunje, said his daughter, Agness, had gone outside at around 8 pm to collect her jacket when the lion jumped on her and mauled her on the knee.
The horrified girl screamed and one of her siblings rushed and started beating it with fists and it ran away after plucking flesh from her leg.
Chiunje is appealing to well-wishers to assist him with US$70 to buy the medication prescribed for his daughter. He said:
<blockquote>The lion was found in the fenced yard of the Pahla family in Mutumburi village in ward 26, under Chief Garahwa in Chisumbanje, Chipinge South.</blockquote>
He said the lion was tracked and killed by Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) rangers.
The lion is thought to have escaped from the Save Valley Conservancy as the fence around the game reserve was vandalised.

Boy Fights Off Lion With Bare Hands To Save Sister

A stray lion which had killed seven cattle and spread panic in Triangle has been killed by a professional hunter hired by Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe (THZ).
The male lion, first spotted on 15 January, was shot dead by a professional hunter working with THZ game rangers.
According to a memo dated January 15, the lion’s spoor was tracked from Section 8 right into Triangle’s business centre before the predator was shot at sugarcane Plot 1801 of Section 26. The memo read in part:
<blockquote>Employees and all members of the community are strongly advised to keep away from the hill and avoid unnecessary outdoor movement on foot within the Triangle Area until the animal has been accounted for.</blockquote>
Reports indicate that the hired professional hunter took less than 24 hours to track and contain the predator at around 1900hours in a cane field.
A source told TellZim News that the hunter had no intention to kill the lion but feared he could lose track of it due to heavy rains currently pounding the area and also there were fears that it could end killing people.
In a post on Twitter on Monday, Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed that the lion had been taken care of. <a href="https://twitter.com/FarawoTinashe/status/1353797405351817216" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">He wrote:</a>
