The government of Malawi has made an agreement to send young people from Malawi to work on farms in Israel. This initiative called the Labour Export Program, is a joint effort between the government and the private sector, according to a government statement seen by Pindula News. The government says the deal aims to fulfil the administration’s commitment to creating jobs and empowering the youth, as advocated by President Lazarus McCathy Chakwera. Read the statement:

The general public is hereby informed that the Government has embarked on the export of labour to various countries including Israel. The Labour export program is an initiative of the government in collaboration with the private sector to fulfill this administration’s commitment to job creation and youth empowerment as championed by His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCathy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi. There are several sectors under consideration and the first cohort is for the agricultural sector. Under the labour export program, the govemment would like to inform the public that the safety and security of the youth is paramount On the Israel labour export, the youth will work at certified and approved locations which are classified as fit and safe environment. In Addition, medical insurance and repatriation arrangements are in place for the youth involved. All labour exports are guided by Malawi Government’s Labour Export Program and Harmonized Labour Export Guidelines of 2022.
So far, the first cohort of the youth from various parts of the country have been granted an opportunity to work in Israel and will leave anytime since all the clearances have been granted. More youth are expected to be engaged in this program.
Government assures Malawians that the identified youth will work on farms and will not be involved in any other activity.
This program will benefit both individuals and the nation. A portion of wages will cover living cost in Israel, while the remainder will be remitted to personal accounts here in Malawi to boost foreign exchange.

President Chakwera has been criticised for the decision to send Malawian youths to work on farms in Israel with some saying he got to power only because he promised to create employment and boost the economy. Some view the deal as exporting cheap labour rather than genuine job creation. However, others argue that the initiative is beneficial, providing financial empowerment and knowledge transfer to the youth. Some believe that opportunities like this should be embraced, especially considering Malawi’s economic challenges. Malawi is endowed with a diversified natural resource base, including some of the most fertile soils for agricultural use in Southern Africa, closed forest resources covering about 30 percent of the land, abundant water resources and remarkably diverse flora and fauna, of which the uniquely rich fish resources stand out. Yet, the country has a history of citizens working in neighbouring countries.

Malawi Government Agrees To Send Young People To Work On Farms In Israel

Malawi’s President, Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, has called for national repentance, for God to have mercy on the Malawi nation.
Chakwera said Malawians need to repent due to calamities that have befallen the country.
He was addressing members at the Eminent Person Forum organised by the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe on Wednesday. Chakwera said:

We must repent, because we have sinned. In the context of relief and recovery right now people are continuing to sin.
As a nation, we need to humble ourselves because God is reaching out to us for repentance.
We need to refocus because there cannot be hope if you know there is no one to call.

The event was calling for eminent persons or high officials like government officials, and business officials to pray and ask for God’s intervention, according to Archbishop Mark Kambalazaza the Chairperson for the Evangelical Association of Malawi.
Speaking at the event, Enoch Adeboye the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, said:

Never query God again, all things work together for good to those that love the Lord.
The disciples accused Jesus as to why he was sleeping when they were about to sink but Jesus calmed the storm.

According to <a href="https://www.africanews.com/2023/03/30/malawi-cyclone-freddys-death-toll-rises-to-1200/#:~:text=The%20death%20toll%20from%20Cyclone,the%20epicenter%20of%20the%20disaster.">africanews</a>, Malawi was hit by Cyclone Freddy early this month resulting in the death of at least 1 200 people in the central African country.
The country’s disaster management department said the chances of finding the 538 missing people, more than two weeks after the disaster, have become slim.

Malawi: President Lazarus Chakwera Calls For National Repentance

The President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, on Monday, declared a “state of disaster” in the southern region of the country after floods caused by Tropical Cyclone Freddy killed at least 99 people.
Heavy rains and strong winds destroyed houses, washed away roads and bridges, flattened crop fields and disrupted power generation.
Chakwera also appealed for help locally and globally for the tens of thousands of people who have been left without food and shelter. He said:
<blockquote>
Government is already responding to the emergencies, rendering urgent assistance to all affected districts, and appealing for local and international support for all the families affected by this disaster.
</blockquote>
The state of disaster has been declared in the following districts: Blantyre City and District, Chikwawa District, Chiradzulu District, Mulanje District, Mwanza District, Neno District, Nsanje District, Thyolo District, Phalombe District, and Zomba City and District.
Malawi’s Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Charles Kalemba, told <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/tino-vomits-in-dressing-room-scare/">CNN</a> that rescue efforts have been compounded by the rains that have continued to pound the country. He said:

We are still having a lot of rain coming down. We are now experiencing landslides, flash floods, and stones rolling down some hills. Because of the weather, rescue efforts are not easy.
In some of the places we have to go and rescue people, it’s not easy to get there. It’s tough but we are making sure we do the job that we need to do.

Tropical Cyclone Freddy has broken records for the longest-lasting storm of its kind after travelling thousands of kilometres since it emerged on 6 February.
The cyclone has been described as a “very rare” storm by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), which called its journey so far “incredible and dangerous.”

Cyclone Freddy: Malawi Declares State Of Disaster In 10 Districts

The current President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera has said that Africa risks being plundered of its natural resources by the East and the West.
He was speaking at the 42nd Sadc summit this week in Kinshasa, DRC. The event was held under the theme, “Promoting Industrialisation through agro-processing, mineral beneficiation, and regional value chains for inclusive and resilient economic growth”.
Said Chakwera:

We must defend what is ours and make sure that no one takes from us what is ours. If the world wants what we have, they must buy it in a fair trade so that we can use the proceeds to build ourselves new cities, new universities, new infrastructure, new industries, and new programmes that will lift our people out of poverty and meet the needs of the most vulnerable among us, including people with disabilities.
With the resources we have, we refuse to be anyone’s beggar, and with the unity we have, we must refuse to let anyone steal from us or use us to steal from our own people or each other. The plunder that we have allowed the West to conduct here in the DRC is a sin we need to repent of, resolve, and refuse to see repeated anywhere else in our region. So let’s show and tell the world with one voice that Africa is open for business, but it is not for sale.
Our collaboration in repelling outbreaks of conflict in pockets of our region, and our strengthening of ties of member states will usher in a new era of solidarity and brotherhood. We are adding value to those who preceded us.
It takes only Africans to build the African continent and no foreigners will develop the continent. When they give us money it cannot help us build our roads, and in the past, they have only fuelled tensions.
There is no one outside Africa who is coming to build Africa the way we want it to be built, not the Americans, not the Europeans, not the Asians. We must leverage our natural resources, which if we are not careful will be stolen by ‘forces’ from the East and the West.

Chakwera is the outgoing chairperson of SADC. The incoming chairperson is DRC President Felix Tshisekedi. The chairperson position rotates on a yearly basis among the 16 member states.

"Our Natural Resources Will Be Stolen By The East And The West," Warns Malawi President Chakwera

Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima says the President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, agreed to rule the country for one term only and that he (Chilima) would be the presidential candidate for the ruling Tonse Alliance in 2025.
Chilima made the claim on Friday, 01 July at a press briefing held at United Transformation Movement (UTM) office in Lilongwe.
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) which Chakwera lead and Chilima’s UTM joined forces under the Tonse Alliance ahead of 2020 for the presidential elections which they won. Said Chilima:

That subject to the decision of the national executive committees or conventions, as the case may be, of the UTM and the Malawi Congress Party, the presidential candidate during the fresh presidential election of 23 June 2020 shall not be the presidential candidate during the immediate next election and shall cede the candidacy to the running mate in the fresh presidential election of 23 June 2020.

Chilima was Chakwera’s running mate in the 2020 presidential election.
He added that they agreed that the alliance would be for 10 years and if there were any changes to be made, a similar process to the one before the election would be required.
Chilima said any departure from the agreement is a political fraud and against the popular will of Malawians.
He said if the Tonse alliance was terminated, his party will call for a fresh presidential election.
Chakwera recently announced that he has withheld delegated duties from Chilima who is being investigated by the Anti-Corruption Bureau and UK’s National Crime Agency.
Chilima allegedly received money from businessperson Zuneth Sattar. He denies the allegations.

Malawi's VP Says President Chakwera Agreed To Rule For One Term

Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera fired his head of police and said he won’t delegate duties to Vice President Saulos Chilima after they were named in a corruption probe. 
<a href="https://www.barrons.com/news/malawi-president-strips-deputy-of-powers-over-corruption-01655842508">Local media</a> say Chakwera acted after receiving a report from Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director-General Martha Chizuma following investigations on reports that some top officials in his government are involved in Zuneth Sattar’s corruption scandal.
The duo was among more than 50 public officials to be linked to Zuneth Sattar, a Malawian now based in the UK who is alleged to have paid bribes to win state contracts worth more than $150 million, Chakwera said in an address to the nation Tuesday. He said:
According to Malawi’s constitution, Chakwera cannot suspend or remove his deputy Chilima because he is an elected official. He said:

The best I can do for now… is to withhold from his office any delegated duties while waiting for the bureau to substantiate its allegations against him.

In a national address, Chakwera also fired the country’s top police officer George Kainja, who was caught on tape discussing deals and kickbacks with Sattar.
The Malawian leader also suspended his chief of staff and the chairman of the country’s procurement directorate, who are also mentioned in the ACB report.
He also said another 31 individuals “from the private sector, the media, civil society, and the legal fraternity” also received money from Sattar.
Chakwera added that the graft-busting body found that Malawi’s police and army awarded 16 contracts worth more than $150 million to five companies belonging to Sattar between 2017 and 2021.

Malawian President Chakwera Strips Vice President, Fires Police Head

Malawi citizens under the banner ‘Social Revolution Movement’ on Friday, November 5, 2021, gave President Lazarus Chakwera seven days to immediately address economic problems facing the country or step down.
The grouping hinted that the Office of the Cabinet and President should respond to their concerns regarding social-economic challenges Malawians are going through.
The demonstrations which were endorsed by the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) started from Lilongwe Community Ground. They were under the theme “Reclaiming a better Malawi.”
Speaking after the demonstrations, Movement leader, Phunziro Mvula, said they will hold mass demonstrations if their grievances will not be answered.
Mvula added that they want the office to address the rise in the cost of living due to heavy taxes and levies and the newly imposed Value Added Tax (VAT) on banking services.
He further said that government should also fulfil its promise of creating jobs and also uplifting local farmers.

We want our government to condemn corrupt activities by Malawians of Asian origin and to stop offering jobs to retired personal at the expenses of young and vibrant youthful professionals. They should address its failure and uplift health and education services.
We also protested against failure by government in the fight against corruption as evident by the abuse of MK6.2 billion and the issue of creation of new constituencies which will just put another burden on our already frail and fragile economy should be addressed.

The group also wants Chakwera and his administration to address the issue of cabinet and unwanted presidential advisors.
Lilongwe City Council (LCC) Deputy Director Administration Hudson Kumphanga received the petition, therefore, assuring the group that their concerns will be sent to the office of the president and cabinet as soon as possible.
Chakwera pledged, in his preelection campaign, to address issues bedevilling the country but observers say the issues continue unabated.

President Chakwera Given 7 Days To Fix Malawi Economy Or Step Down

The president of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera has come under heavy criticism for appointing her daughter to serve as Secretary in the office of Malawi’s Embassy in Brussels, Belgium.
Reports suggest that Chakwera has appointed Violet Chakwera Mwasinga as third Secretary in the officer of Malawi’s Ambassador in Brussels.
The development comes barely weeks after Chakwera also appointed State Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima’s in-law as Ambassador.
This has angered many Malawians and some have taken the issue to social media to condemn Chakwera’s malpractice.
Ironically, before Chakwera was elected into office, he heavily criticised his predecessor Peter Mutharika for nepotism.
Writing on his official Facebook page social commentator Onjezani Kenani accused Chakwera of repeating Mutharika’s mistakes. Said Kenani:
<blockquote>_At the podium, they took turns accusing Peter Mutharika of practising nepotism. What they meant was nepotism was bad for only as long as those being put into government positions were not their own family members. Once they were voted into power, we are now told that it’s not nepotism because the relatives they are appointing have qualifications._
_Did those people Peter Mutharika appoint not have the so-called qualifications? Besides, the last time I checked, Peter Mutharika never appointed any son or daughter of his to any taxpayer-funded position. His daughters, by the way, are lawyers, with their own legal firms. He also never appointed any in-law to any taxpayer-funded position. But hearing them say it, one would have thought he was the worst nepotist that ever walked the earth. Tell me: why should your nepotism be considered better than Mutharika’s nepotism?_</blockquote>
Nepotism is not unique to Malawi as a host of leaders across the globe have been accused of practising the same.
The practice can have a huge adverse impact on the growth of an economy, especially if the individuals who attain jobs through nepotism are incompetent to execute their duties and responsibilities.

Malawi President Chakwera Sends Daughter To Embassy

Malawi has been named the country of the year for “reviving democracy in an authoritarian region” by the Economist newspaper.
The Economist cites the nullification of the 2019 election by judges who cited irregularities and ordered a rerun that was won by the 65-year-old Lazarus Chakwera after he secured 58.57 per cent of the vote beating the incumbent Peter Mutharika. The Economist reports:
<blockquote>The vote-count was rigged with correction fluid on the tally sheets. Foreign observers cynically approved it anyway. Malawians launched mass protests against the ‘Tipp-Ex election.</blockquote>
The publication also says Freedom House’s report that democracy and respect for human rights regressed in 80 countries between the start of the pandemic and September but only improved in Malawi.
The Economist further reports that although Malawi is still poor, its people are treated as citizens, not subjects.
This comes after reports of gross human rights violations in Zimbabwe, a claim which the state denies.
Zimbabwe’s opposition and human rights defenders claim the state has been infringing human rights by kidnapping and torturing government critics.
Authorities, however, say the allegations are being raised by individuals sponsored by “the enemy of the state” to soil the image of the Southern African country.

Reviving Democracy: Malawi Named Country Of The Year

The government of Malawi has agreed to South Africa’s request to extradite popular preacher Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, to face trial in South African courts over money laundering, theft and fraud charges.
The duo escaped South Africa’s borders and later told their followers on social media that they took the decision to flee because their lives were in great danger and they would not have a fair trial.
Malawi’s Information Minister and government spokesperson, Gospel Kazako, said on Monday the documents for the pair’s extradition had been signed by his Homeland Security Minister, Richard Chimwendo Banda.
Kazako stressed, however, that it was up to the courts to decide whether Bushiri and his wife should be arrested and sent to South Africa.
Should an arrest warrant be issued in Malawi, the pair will likely face justice in Malawi first and then will possibly be returned to South Africa.
It was not yet clear if the Bushiris would be arrested and some have suggested the extradition process could take years.
The fugitive preacher who is the founder of the Enlightened Christian Gathering church has since forfeited his multimillion Rand premises in South Africa after he violated his bail conditions by leaving South Africa.
It is not known how the pair skipped South Africa’s borders undetected although some claim that <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/full-thread-how-bushiris-were-smuggled-out-of-sa/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">both the South African and Malawian governments aided them.</a> Both governments have denied the allegations.
The Bushiris’ escape coincided with an official two-day visit by Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera to South Africa.

Malawi Agrees To SA's Request To Extradite Bushiri

<blockquote>The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the general public that the home-bound departure of the plane carrying His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, and Her Excellency Madame Monica Chakwera, First Lady of the Republic of Malawi, was delayed by seven hours on Friday, 13th November 2020.  The plane was scheduled to leave South Africa at 15:30 Hrs but did not leave until 22:30 Hrs.
Chief among the causes of the delay was the South African Government’s refusal to allow Malawi’s advance delegation to travel back home together with President Chakwera and his delegation, citing unspecified security reasons.
The South African authorities inexplicably refusal to let Malawi’s President leave with his advance team came despite being informed of the arrangement in advance, in conformity to a similar arrangement made in all the countries President Chakwera has visited thus far.
Dissatisfied with the vague security reasons given for the refusal, His Excellency the President decided that he would not travel back to Malawi without his advance team.
In the impasse that followed, the Malawi delegation proposed to the South African authorities that only President Chakwera and his delegation should leave from Pretoria Waterkloof Military Airbase where their plane had landed, while the advance team should be picked up en route from OR Tambo International Airport. For no apparent reason, the South African authorities rejected this proposal as well.
The Malawi delegation then spent the next 6 hours trying to reason with the South African authorities before the proposal was accepted.
In retrospect, the Malawi delegation was justified in its dissatisfaction with the unspecified security reasons cited for the refusal.
To begin with, President Chakwera’s plane was parked at Pretoria Waterkloof Military Airbase, a highly secure facility, under guard by the South African police throughout the visit.
Secondly, at the time that Malawi’s advance team was being barred from boarding the plane, their passports and luggage were thoroughly checked by uniformed police officers instead of South Africa’s immigration officers.
Thirdly, the entire delegation’s luggage was loaded onto the flight by military personnel from the South African Defence Force.
Fourthly, at the scheduled time of departure from the military airbase, there were dozens of South African security personnel on the ground, who not only inspected the plane and its cargo but also inspected every passenger on entry.
The Malawi delegation complied with all these security measures out of deference to the vague security concerns of the South African authorities, despite the fact that the manner in which they were conducted and the delay they caused breached diplomatic protocols commensurate with the dignity of President Chakwera’s office and person.
As such, the Malawi delegation was justified to dismiss as unacceptable and unsatisfactory the South African authorities’ use of unspecified security reasons to hinder President Chakwera from leaving with his advance team.
Even after agreeing to let the advance team board the at OR Tambo International Airport, the South African authorities subjected the team to additional security checks before and after boarding the plane, again without giving any specific security reasons.
In fact, to date, those security reasons have not been communicated through formal channels.
The Government of Malawi is aware and grateful that a public statement was recently issued by the South African Government, exculpating President Chakwera from false allegations dominating the South African media that his presidential plane was used as a conduit for trafficking two Malawians wanted by South African authorities.
Notwithstanding, the Government of Malawi notes with concern that the statement falls short of acknowledging that the treatment President Chakwera was subjected to upon his departure was improper and incongruous to the warm hospitality he received upon his arrival.

Malawi President Retreats On "1m Jobs" Election Promise

Lazarus Chakwera, the President of Malawi, is set for a two-day official visit to Zimbabwe at the end of this month.
In a statement, Malawi’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said President Chakwera will be in Zimbabwe for two days from 30 September 2020. The Statement read:
<blockquote>The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform members of the general public that His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, will go on a two-day Official Visit to the Republic of Zimbabwe on 30th September 2020.

Chakwera was sworn in as the sixth president of Malawi on 28 June having obtained almost 59% of the vote.
He forged an alliance with Saulos Chilima to defeat incumbent president Peter Mutharika when the Court nullified the 2019 General elections due to massive irregularities.

Malawi President Set For 2-day Visit To Zimbabwe

Mawawinals are reportedly not happy as their brand new president Lazarus Chakwera appointed relatives to his cabinet to the astonishment of Malawians who thought he will rise above the former cabinet’s nepotism, Pulse reports.
According to the publication, Dr Lazarous Chakwera appointed the following people:

President Chakwera reportedly filled the cabinet with 70% of people from his region and his political stronghold, while during his campaigns he criticised Peter Mutharika’s cabinet for nepotism. Malawians have expressed their displeasure on social media calling it the cabinet of spouses and wives and cousins.

New Malawi President Appoint Family Members To His Cabinet

President Mnangagwa yesterday took the time to congratulate Malawi’s newly elected president  Dr Lazarus Chakwera and praised the country’s electoral commission and the country at large for how they handled the election re-run, the Chronicle reports.
In his congratulatory statement president Mnangagwa said:

ED Congratulates Malawi And Praises MEC For How They Handled The Election Re-Run

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has extolled Malawi’s state institutions – the military and the judiciary – for taking a principled stance to protect the country’s constitution and maintaining the rule of law.
In a letter written by the opposition leader to Malawi’s president Lazarus Chakwera, Chamisa said the developments in Malawi are a source of inspiration to democrats across Africa. Said Chamisa:
<blockquote>We equally salute the national institutions in Malawi, in particular the judiciary and security services for acting as a bulwark against authoritarianism and defending the constitution of Malawi both in letter and spirit.
It must be a source of pride to Malawians that these institutions have consistently demonstrated a commitment to professionalism, respect for the rule of law and defence of the constitution.</blockquote>
Chakwera was was on Sunday sworn in as President of Malawi after winning an election re-run.
He got 58.57 per cent of Tuesday’s vote, defeating incumbent President Peter Mutharika.
Malawi’s Constitutional Court annulled President Mutharika’s victory in the May 2019 election, citing widespread irregularities and ordered a rerun.
The results of the rerun followed voting patterns shown in the previous election which was annulled but Chakwera, Saulos Klaus Chilima and smaller parties formed a grand coalition to win last week’s vote.

The dream was for all of us, together, to be the ones who enjoy the riches of Malawi’s soil; to be the ones who make the products of her industries; to be the ones who harvest the bounties of her fields; to be the ones who are served by her taxes, and to be the ones who raise the skylines of her cities.
Today, we too have emerged from great struggle and marched our sore feet towards this moment of victory and justice. But unlike our forebears, we have done so not just because we have a dream.
We have done so because the time has come for us to go beyond dreaming. The time has come for us to arise from the slumber of our dream and make the dream true.
Dr Chilima and I accept this challenge and task. We will pursue it, not just as servants accountable to you voters, but as stewards of the hopes of millions of children, born and unborn, who have no vote.

Now, I am no stranger to the benefits of good government. So I pledge to run Malawi well, for that is the surest path to Tsogolo Labwino, a path that has long been in ruins, riddled with the potholes of greed and corruption.
In making this pledge, I am accepting this call to serve you with joy and holy fear, for I am duty-bound to God and all of you to give it my best.
However, I know that there are many of you who did not vote for me in this election, and perhaps the prospect of my presidency fills you with fear and grief.

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera's Acceptance Speech {Full Text}

Lazarus Chakwera has been sworn in as president of Malawi after winning a historic election rerun.
Chakwera, 65, secured 58.57 per cent of Tuesday’s vote, beating the incumbent Peter Mutharika, 79.
Saulos Chilima, Chakwera’s running mate, was also sworn in as vice-president at a ceremony in the capital, Lilongwe.
Chakwera, a Pentecostal preacher and former theology lecturer pledged to unite the country and fight poverty and be a leader rather than a ruler. He said in his victory speech:
<blockquote>Time has come for us to go beyond dreaming, the time has come for us to wake up, to arise from slumber, and to make our dreams come true.
With your help we will restore faith in having a government that serves; not a government that rules, a government that inspires, not a government that infuriates, a government that listens, not a government that shouts but a government that fights for you and not against you.</blockquote>
Chakwera swept to victory on the back of a nine-party coalition, the Tonse Alliance, and had the backing of former President Joyce Banda as well Chilima, who served as deputy to Mutharika.
Mutharika did not attend the ceremony because the law does not require the outgoing president to be present when a successor takes the oath of office.

Chakwera Sworn In As Malawi President

Peter Mutharika, Malawi’s President has attained 38.5% of the total vote cast on 21 May to secure a second term in office.
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) delayed announcing the presidential result as per the High Court directive. The order followed opposition leader, Challenger Lazarus Chakwera’s application seeking to delay the results citing electoral irregularities. Chakwera’s party wanted recounts in at least 10 of the country’s 28 voting districts.
The results were announced on Monday (27/05/2019) after the High Court injunction was lifted. Results for the top three contestants were as follows:

<li>President Mutharika (Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) – 38.5% </li>
<li>Chakwera (Malawi Congress Party (MCP) – 35.4%.  </li>
<li>Saulos Chilima (President Mutharika’s deputy) just over 20%.</li>

A few days before the election day, Mutharika’s deputy, Chilima claimed that former Zimbabwe police chief commissioner, Augustine Chihuri had been hired to help the government in recruiting a secret police force that would be used to manipulate the electoral process and results. These allegations were however dismissed by the government of Malawi.
The High court order that delayed the announcement of the presidential results was effected following 147 reports of irregularities.

MALAWI ELECTIONS: Presidential Results Out

President Peter Mutharika, Malawi’s incumbent is leading by 40% in this week’s election after 75% of the votes were counted. This puts him on track for a second term.
Lazarus Chakwera of the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Mutharika’s main challenger followed with 35% of the vote. Meanwhile, Mutharika’s estranged deputy, Saulos Chilima received 18% in Tuesday’s polls.
There were allegations recently by Chilima that Mutharika had hired exiled former Zimbabwean police chief commissioner, Augustine Chihuri to manipulate the election. The government of Malawi has since dismissed the allegations as false. This was reiterated by former Zimbabwean Cabinet Minister, Jonathan Moyo who said Chihuri was not in Malawi.
