The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has approached the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) seeking permission to use the National Sports Stadium (NSS).
The PSL intends to stage midweek fixtures but there are concerns that the stadiums currently in use may be over-used.
NSS was closed in June this year due to the deteriorating state of the playing pitch, and water reticulation system challenges.
At the time, a total of eight teams were using the National Sports Stadium for their home matches and the closure of the facility forced the clubs to look for other home venues outside Harare.
PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200016284/psl-approaches-src-over-nss">NewsDay</a> that they are seeking permission to use the stadium after it recently hosted a number of national and private events, including two football matches.
NSS hosted the ZDF Cup final match featuring the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Select against Malawi on 15 August, and the Presidential Inauguration Cup on 04 September. Said Ndebele:

We have written to the SRC to check on the availability of the National Sports Stadium given that it has hosted some events in recent times. We are hoping that we will get a positive response.
With the stadia that are available, we have a challenge of having mid-week fixtures because the facilities will be over-used.
If we can get either the National Sports Stadium or Rufaro Stadium or even both, then that will be perfect.
We are happy that we now have an approved facility in Chisumbanje (Green Fuel Arena) but due to its location, it does not alleviate the problem of Barbourfields and Bata stadiums.

Bata Stadium, located in Gweru, Midlands Province, serves as the home venue for Sheasham, CAPS United and Black Rhinos.
Dynamos are now hosting their matches at Barbourfields Stadium, the home of arch-rivals, Highlanders.
Cranborne Bullets and ZPC Kariba use Nyamhunga Stadium in Kariba while Herentals College and FC Platinum are using Mandava Stadium.
Simba Bhora and Ngezi Platinum Stars use Baobab Stadium in Mhondoro while Mutare-based Manica Diamonds and Triangle United use Gibbo Stadium in Triangle.
Hwange use the Colliery Stadium in Hwange, Chicken Inn and Bulawayo Chiefs use Luveve Stadium, while Greenfuel use the Greenfuel Arena which was recently homologated.

PSL Approaches SRC Over National Sports Stadium

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) said the commencement of the 2023 season on 18 March will not be negatively affected by the unavailability of stadiums that are either condemned or under renovation.
The Colliery Stadium in Hwange, Ascot Stadium in Gweru, Simba Bhora’s Shamva home ground, Vengere Stadium in Rusape, Sakubva in Mutare, Nyamhunga Stadium in Kariba, Green Fuel’s home ground in Chisumbanje have failed to meet requirements to host topflight matches.
This means that several teams will play their 2023 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League opening games at alternative venues.
PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele said that they hope to see stadiums that the stadiums will be ready when the season starts. He said:
<blockquote>
We will play our games as scheduled. Our hope is that those facilities that are going through work will be completed before the next round of stadium inspections.
Otherwise, we’re good to go and clubs are encouraged to make sure that they complete the registration of their players by Friday, March 17.
</blockquote>
In Harare, the National Sports Stadium is the only venue cleared for PSL games.

Stadium Crisis: PSL Matches To Be Played As Scheduled

Premier Soccer League (PSL) chief executive officer, Kennedy Ndebele, is mourning the death of his 20-year-old son, Ndabenhle who passed away under unclear circumstances.
Ndabenhle was reported missing on Sunday having been last seen around 3 PM along Banbury Road in Montrose Suburb wearing a white T-shirt and black shorts.
He was found dead near Plumtree Town according to <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/ndebele-mourns-death-of-his-son/">Chronicle</a>, and the family was said to be awaiting post-mortem results to ascertain how he died.
The PSL sent out a condolence message to the Ndebele family following Ndabenhle’s death. Reads the message:

We are sad to announce that the Premier Soccer League CEO, Mr Kennedy Ndebele has lost his son.
Our thoughts and prayers are with him and the family during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), also sent out a condolence message to the PSL boss. It reads:

PSL CEO Kenny Ndebele's Son Dies

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has set stringent conditions for friendly matches ahead of the return of football in a week’s time.
Clubs will have to pay US$590 (close to $50 000) per match and also pay for the match officials’ COVID-19 tests, which have to be done 24 hours before kick-off.
A memorandum (standard operating procedures) sent to the clubs on Thursday and signed by PSL chief executive Kennedy Ndebele reads:
<blockquote>Matches (friendly) shall be handled by match officials appointed by the Zifa Referees Committee.
The match fees are as follows: match commissioner US$120/equivalent; centre referee US$120/equivalent; assistant referees US$100/equivalent; a member of the PSL sports medicine committee shall be present at all friendly matches. The doctor fee for attendance is US$150.
… This serves to advise PSL clubs are required to follow the laid down protocols when having friendly matches.
Requests for friendly matches are to be submitted to the PSL offices on Tuesdays only to allow us sufficient time to process the applications.
All players, technical team, and match officials are to be tested for COVID-19 24 hours before the match.
The tests must be monitored by the COVID-19 PSL compliance officers. Clubs shall be responsible for COVID-19 testing of the match officials. Matches are to be played behind closed doors</blockquote>
The league resumes on 15 May with a cluster tournament to be played in Harare (CAPS United, Dynamos, Harare City, Herentals, Yadah, and ZPC Kariba), Bulawayo (Bulawayo Chiefs, Bulawayo City, Chicken Inn and Highlanders), Zvishavane (FC Platinum, Ngezi Platinum Stars, Triangle, and Whawha) and in Mutare (Manica Diamonds, Tenax, Black Rhinos, and Cranborne Bullets).
Two top teams in the groups will clash in the quarter-finals. The main league is set to start on 17 July.

PSL Sets Tough Conditions For Friendlies

Premier Soccer League (PSL) CEO Kennedy Ndebele said that in future, measures will be taken to ensure that clubs comply with directives.
This comes after six clubs, namely; CAPS United, Chicken Inn, Black Rhinos, Triangle, Yadah and Harare City failed to carry out as well as submit their COVID-19 test results to the PSL by Monday, November 9.
Failure to comply with the directive by the six clubs within the stipulated time has stalled progress on the resumption of domestic football. Said Ndebele:
<blockquote>We are happy with the clubs that have been proactive in this endeavour and at the same time disappointed with the clubs that have not been cooperative. We shall take measures to ensure that in future everyone will comply with directives.
This phase is very important because we are already looking to also prepare for next year’s competition. It helps us understand the procedures we need to undertake for the future.</blockquote>
Clubs that have submitted COVID-19 test results are; Herentals, FC Platinum, Highlanders, Ngezi Platinum, ZPC Kariba, Whawha, Tenax, Dynamos, Bulawayo City, Manica Diamonds, Bulawayo Chiefs, Cranborne Bullets.
Ndebele said the resumption of domestic football would also help the national team to prepare for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals in January and February next year.

PSL To Whip Errant Clubs Into Line

Kenny Ndebele, the Premier Soccer League Chief Executive Officer has said football training for the 2019/2020 PSL season should resume as clubs await clearance to fully resume matches, to keep players in optimum shape in preparation for the AFCON Qualifiers set for November 2020, the Daily News reports.
Ndebele said this while speaking to the publication about football resumption in Zimbabwe:
<blockquote>Whatever is possible has to be done. We need to start preparing immediately and whenever we get the opportunity to be cleared we start playing,” Ndebele told the Daily News yesterday. We can’t employ a wait and see strategy; we need to pursue for clearance so that clubs can at least start training.
Another pressing issue is that the Warriors are set to resume their 2022 Afcon Group H qualifying campaign with back-to-back matches against reigning African champions Algeria between November 9 and 17.
If CAF are saying qualifiers will be played in November, it’s important that we push for clearance to start training within the WHO protocols. There are a lot of things that we need to factor in here. Chances are that foreign-based players might not be released according to latest Fifa communication because of the coronavirus. What will we do then? This is why it’s important for PSL players to start training.
We provide players for the national team and if the fixtures are in November and we are folding our hands what are we doing really? We cannot sit and wait for authorities to grant clearance then we start preparations. Look at the tourism sector.</blockquote>
Ndebele also said football stakeholders must push the government to allow training to resume in order to give players a chance to train in preparation for the PSL season:
<blockquote>We need to be proactive and push for the clearance, it’s important for us. We will not be fined for submitting a proposal. Even if we say we can’t play football this year but the important thing is that even next year we will still need to prepare.
The sports medicine committee came up with a document to guide and the assumption is that it was submitted to the government for approval. It’s only us who can push for the start of football. Other countries are busy holding workshops on how to play in the current situation. It is the same with us we should be doing the same thing for instance we need to get the position on stadia now.
We can rectify other issues that have been raised by instance body now so that when we are eventually cleared to start we don’t start from zero. We have to quickly start the process. We must not look at the dates but the process.
We may not have football this year but we need players to start training and put other things in order. We cannot wait for someone from somewhere to give us the go ahead. What we are doing now is to engage stakeholders. What might not start is the competition but other things must be done and put in place.</blockquote>
The government has not stated its position on the resumption of Football except stating that sporting activities will resume when it is safe to do so.

Football Training Should Resume If AFCON Qualifiers Are To Be Played In November - PSL Boss

Premier Soccer League (PSL) CEO Kennedy Ndebele has refuted reports that the league is paying $8 000 per month in rentals for its Harare offices. Ndebele said the combined rental costs for both Harare and Bulawayo offices are actually less than $4000 per month. This comes after a number of articles in state media ahead of today’s election for the PSL chair. Speaking to The Standard, Ndebele said,
<blockquote>We have read with dismay inaccurate and misleading media reports insinuating that the Premier Soccer League [PSL] is paying rentals way above market rates,” Ndebele said in a statement yesterday.
We would like to set the record straight that PSL is not paying rentals near the stated figures of $8 000 per month for its Harare head office. In fact, the combined rentals for both Harare and Bulawayo offices do not add up to half of the alleged figures. It’s also untrue that the leased premises are owned by a local farmer.
The lease agreements for the two premises are available for our stakeholders to peruse. The leased premises in Bulawayo were secured by the previous PSL management committee in 2009, before the current chief executive officer was employed by the league.</blockquote>
