The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), an opposition party in South Africa, has<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/update-on-worshippers-swept-by-floods-during-baptism-death-toll-rises/"> mourned 14 Johanne Masowe Baptist Church members who drowned last week Saturday during a baptism ceremony</a> in Jukskei River, Johannesburg.
In a statement yesterday, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Gauteng province said:

The EFF in Gauteng mourn the lives of the 14 Johanne Masowe Baptist Church members who tragically lost their lives on Saturday during their sacred baptism practice along the Jukskei River. We also extend our condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in such a tragic manner.
We also call on the provincial government of Gauteng to intensify the rescue efforts of the added three members who are said to be still missing. As Africans, our faith and spiritual beliefs are entrenched in our DNA. The churches, rivers, mountains and oceans have always been our places of refuge when we seek spiritual guidance. No one would have thought that such a sacred practice would be marred by such a tragedy.  In the same breath, we cannot ignore the permanent flood threat that the Jukskei River poses to the Alexander community, particularly in Stjwetla.

The worshippers who are believed to be Zimbabweans were reportedly swept away by flash floods which followed heavy rains in the Bramley Park area, according to local media.
Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi was quoted saying that officials had warned residents about the dangers of conducting rituals along rivers.
Some of the more than 30 congregants were said to have been standing on rocks in the river on Saturday when a torrent of water suddenly swept them away, a witness said.
The pastor was reportedly saved after he clung on to a tree branch overhanging the river as he was being carried away, the witness added.

EFF Mourns 14 Johanne Masowe Church Members Who Drowned During Baptism Ceremony

The death toll in the<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/update-on-church-members-who-were-swept-away-by-flash-floods-during-baptism-ceremony/"> Jukskei River drownings</a> has risen to 14, according to Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi.
The search will resume on Monday for missing worshippers who were swept away by the Jukskei River on Saturday during a baptism ceremony.
About 15 church members were reportedly swept away by flash floods in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday while conducting a baptism ceremony.
The flash flood followed heavy rains in the Bramley Park area.
Part of Grayston Drive was closed on Saturday as emergency medical services scoured the area for survivors and more bodies, according to <a href="https://www.citizen.co.za/news/bodies-pulled-from-jukskei-river-after-flash-floods-in-joburg/">The Citizen</a>.
At least 20 bodies had been pulled from the river early on Saturday evening, The Citizen reported citing a Private Security company, Vision Tactical.
It is believed that some of the victims were children.

The death toll in the Jukskei River drownings has risen to nine, up from two <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/about-15-church-members-swept-away-by-flash-floods-while-conducting-baptism/">reported earlier.</a>
Seven more bodies were discovered in the river on Sunday, <a href="https://www.enca.com/news/death-toll-jukskei-drownings-climbs-9">eNCA News</a> reported citing Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

They were conducting a baptism ritual in the Jukskei River and were caught in a flash flood following heavy rains in the Bramley Park area, <a href="https://www.enca.com/news/least-two-dead-15-missing-after-flash-floods-wash-away-church-group">eNCA News</a> reported citing Johannesburg Emergency Services. 
Johannesburg EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, said at least two people have drowned. He also said search-and-rescue operations continue on Sunday (today). He said:

We immediately activated operations along that river stream up until 10 pm on Saturday night.
We will be resuming on Sunday morning to continue with our search looking for the 15 other people who are alleged to be missing.
Of course they might have run while the storm came through so we will also activate the services of the local pastor to try and remove any uncertainty about their whereabouts.
