CCC Senator for Matabeleland North Province Sengezo Tshabangu claims he is the footprint of Joshua Nkomo.
Tshabangu, who was sworn in as a Senator on Tuesday, 05 March, carries a stick similar to the one associated with the late former Vice President.
Speaking to reporters at the Parliament Building in Mt Hampden, Tshabangu asserted that he is the footprint of Joshua Nkomo and he would ensure that Nkomo’s vision is completed. He said:

I am the footprint of Joshua Nkomo so this (stick) symbolises the torch bearer that was carried by Joshua Nkomo when he was fighting for the liberation of this country. So I am his footprint, I am going to make sure that what he stood for, I will stand for, his vision is completed.

Tshabangu has been described as “Zimbabwe’s biggest political hacker and impostor in contemporary history. A man who can steal a whole political party and get away with it.”
The former MDC youth league activist seized CCC with the assistance of State institutions after the August 2023 general elections and recalled several senators whom he replaced with his cronies.
Tshabangu was virtually unknown before the 2023 general elections though it has since emerged that he was once suspended by the MDC then led by the late Morgan Tsvangirai about a decade ago for being part of a cabal that attempted to overthrow the former trade unionist.

I Am Joshua Nkomo's Footprint - Tshabangu

According to Sengezo Tshabangu, politicians from Harare and or Mashonaland do not entertain the idea of a united Matabeleland as they view it as a security threat. He claims to have seen this in the ruling ZANU PF and experienced this under the leadership of Morgan Tsvangirai, the late founding leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). He told Zenzele Ndebele during an interview:

There is nobody from that end who wants a united Matabeleland. A united Matabeleland is a security threat. A united Matabeleland gives them sleepless nights. A united Matabeleland is a threat to the establishment itself. It is now being transmitted to the opposition politics. I don’t think President Emmerson Mnangagwa would want a united Matabeleland. Morgan Tsvangirai was never at one given time at ease with a united Matabeleland so is Nelson Chamisa, he is scared of a united Matabeleland.
</blockquote>
This neglect of Matabeleland provinces by political elites is not a new issue. It is often alleged that these regions are only considered during election periods. Political analysts often say the ruling party, ZANU PF, is particularly fearful of a united Matabeleland due to the historical event known as Gukurahundi. This violent period occurred after independence when former President Robert Mugabe deployed the 5th Brigade to suppress alleged dissidents in Matabeleland and Midlands. Thousands of people were killed, and the wounds from this tragedy remain unhealed.
Tensions between Mashonaland and Matabeleland can be traced back to the pre-colonial era when Ndebele Kings raided Mashonaland for resources. Some believe that the Shona-speaking political elites still harbour concerns about a united Matabeleland due to this historical context. There are fears that a united Matabeleland could lead to secession and potentially result in civil wars similar to those experienced after independence.
Sengezo Tshabangu’s remarks come as Zimbabwe commemorates Unity Day on 22 December. Unity Day marks the signing of the Unity Accord in 1987, which ended the civil war between ZANU-PF led by Robert Mugabe and the Joshua Nkomo-led PF-ZAPU. However, concerns persist regarding the economic neglect of Matabeleland, particularly in Bulawayo, which used to be the country’s industrial hub. This economic disparity raises questions about the true unity and development opportunities for all regions in Zimbabwe.

A United Matabeleland Is Seen As A Security Threat - Tshabangu

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Freeman_Chari/">Freeman Chari</a> has caused controversy on social media by sharing excerpts from the late former ZANU PF leader <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ndabaningi_Sithole/">Ndabaningi Sithole</a>‘s book, which explains why ZAPU split into ZANU and ZAPU during the colonial era. Some believe the post is about Nelson Chamisa. Sithole’s book highlights several factors that led to the deposition of the late former Vice President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Joshua_Nkomo/">Joshua Nkomo</a>, including Nkomo’s fear of jail and his alleged evasion of necessary decisions. It also mentions contradictions within ZAPU and Nkomo’s habit of concealing the truth from his Central Executive members. Read the excerpts:

1. Mr. Nkomo is very much afraid of going to jail and this fear of jail causes him to evade taking the necessary decisions which any leader in his position is expected to take. The white settlers have exploited this fact to full advantage. Because of this fear, Mr. Nkomo has deserted the people at the time when they most needed bold leadership that does not count the cost.
a) When ZAPU was banned on September 20th, 1962, Mr. Nkomo was then in Lusaka. Much against the advice of UNIP and his supporters Mr. Nkomo fled to Dar-es-Salaam leaving as it were, his sheep to be scattered by the wolf. Mr. Nkomo publicly stated that he did not want to ‘rot in jail.’ Meanwhile, hundreds of his supporters went to jail.
b) When he was finally forced to go back to Southern Rhodesia and face detention, after ten days of chopping and changing, the psychological moment had been missed, and his supporters’ confidence in him was greatly shaken and under-mined, and since then the people have been saying: ‘how can we get our independence with such a cowardly leader?’ While in detention, Mr. Nkomo’s fears were also clearly demonstrated. He arranged for a private plane to take all the members of the Central Executive secretly out of restriction but they refused to jump their restriction.
</blockquote>
Nkomo, on the other hand, wrote in his book that the divisions were tribal in nature, citing instances of incitement against him based on his Ndebele ethnicity. He said:

Joseph Msika, then deputy treasurer of Zapu, had an even more disturbing experience. He saw one of our colleagues, Washington Malianga, nervously hiding away a printed document. Joseph asked to see it, Washington refused, so Joseph snatched it away and read it. He found it was a circular openly urging Zapu to bring the ‘majority tribes’ to the leadership of the party, and to get rid of `Zimundebere’, which is a derogatory term in the Shona language for ‘the old Ndebele man’. That meant me: the attack was a straight incitement to tribal feeling against me. Joseph gave the wretched document back to Malianga, who tore it up and pretended it had never existed.
</blockquote>
Freeman Chari’s post ignited a range of responses, including speculation that it indirectly referred to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nelson_Chamisa/">Nelson Chamisa</a>, the leader of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Citizens%27_Coalition_for_Change/">Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).</a> Chamisa has faced criticism for not confronting the ruling ZANU PF party more boldly.
Some observed that while yesteryear liberation leaders were only afraid of jail, present-day opposition leaders can be poisoned in jail. Some commentators questioned the notion that a leader must go to prison to prove their worth as previous leaders’ imprisonment did not result in the removal of ZANU PF from power.
Some CCC supporters expressed the belief that if Chamisa displayed the bravery of figures like <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Job_Sikhala/">Job Sikhala</a> or <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tendai_Biti/">Tendai Biti</a>, ZANU PF could have been overthrown in 2018. Others cautioned against being aggressive, as ZANU PF may use confrontation or violence as an excuse for brutality. They advocated fighting against ZANU PF outside of prison, citing the alleged poisoning and slow death of former Prime Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Morgan_Tsvangirai/">Morgan Tsvangirai</a> as an example. They argued that going to prison is not a guaranteed solution for removing ZANU PF from power and could pose risks to Chamisa’s life.

Freeman Chari's Post Sparks Controversy As Chamisa Is Compared To Joshua Nkomo On "Fear"

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Wilbert_Mubaiwa/">Wilbert Mubaiwa</a>, a presidential candidate in the recent Zimbabwean elections, aimed to secure 250,000 votes in preparation for the 2028 elections. Despite not winning, Mubaiwa received 53,517 votes, surpassing experienced candidates like <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Lovemore_Madhuku/">Lovemore Madhuku</a>.
Mubaiwa, who operates from an office in Harare’s Newlands area adorned with paintings of liberation heroes, including <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Solomon_Mujuru/">Solomon Mujuru,</a> <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Herbert_Chitepo/">Herbert Chitepo</a>, and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Joshua_Nkomo/">Joshua Nkomo</a>, expressed respect for these figures. He suggested that they should have retired in 1980, allowing the country to progress. Speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200016564/inside-2023-election-surprise-package">NewsDay</a> on the results, the 61-year-old Mubaiwa whose resume tells the story of a well-schooled man with a portfolio full of high-ranking positions in industry and commerce, said:

We hired a public relations company to conduct surveys. We realised that there is a significant number of die-hard supporters in both ZANU PF and CCC. We also discovered that the only way for an opposition party to win is by eating into ZANU PF’s support base.

I realised that I had limited resources, so I only met with leaders in several provinces, hoping that they would spread the word to others in their communities. However, I discovered that most people were serving multiple political parties for financial gain.

Regarding the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD), Mubaiwa said if President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa/">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> is serious about it, he should amend the Constitution. Mubaiwa stated that he has not considered joining POLAD and will decide when the time comes. He said POLAD lacks legal statutes, rendering it ineffective.
Mubaiwa recounted his political journey, starting with joining the Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) Party led by former Vice-President Joice Mujuru in 2016. He later became part of the National People’s Party (NPP) but resigned in October 2017 due to disagreements and undemocratic practices.
Mubaiwa said concerned Zimbabweans approached him to initiate a three-year consultation process to assess the need for a new political party. Based on the resulting report, the National People’s Congress (NPC) was formed, and Mubaiwa was elected as its interim president on March 13, 2022. Subsequently, he became the substantive president of the NPC on January 27, 2023, without facing any opposition.
Mubaiwa’s professional background includes serving as deputy chairperson of the ZESA Holdings board of directors and chairperson of the Hwange Colliery Company. He has also held leadership roles in various organisations, demonstrating his expertise in infrastructure and logistics. Mubaiwa attributes his success to his fascination with numbers and charts.

Zimbabwe 2023 Elections: Losing Presidential Candidate Said Had Targeted 250 000 Votes

The Government is set to erect statues in honour of late former president Robert Mugabe and the late former vice president Joshua Nkomo in Harare.
Nkomo already has another statue erected in his honour in Bulawayo city centre.
On Tuesday, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said Cabinet adopted the report on nominations for 2023 honours and awards presented by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, as Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Honours and Awards.
She said the committee recommended that Mugabe and Nkomo be further recognised for their liberation war efforts by erecting statues in their honour. Said Mutsvangwa:

The nation is further advised that in recognition of the roles played by Comrade Robert Gabriel Mugabe and Dr. Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo, who selflessly dedicated their lives to the liberation of Zimbabwe, Cabinet approved the erection of statues in Harare.
The Statue of Cde. R.G. Mugabe will be erected at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, while the second Dr. J.M.N. Nkomo statue will be erected at the trumpet interchange at the intersection of Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo and Glenara Roads.

Mugabe was deposed by the military in November 2017 and died in a Singapore hospital on 06 September 2019.
His family refused to allow the Government to bury his remains at the National Heroes Acre.
Mugabe was buried in his rural village of Kutama in Zvimba three weeks after he died in Singapore.

Cabinet Approves Erection Of Mugabe, Nkomo Statues In Harare

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sibangilizwe_Nkomo/">Sibangalizwe</a>, the president of the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) and son of the late vice president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Joshua_Nkomo/">Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo</a>, has prevented the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) from holding an all-night gala in honour of his father at his ancestral home in Kezi, Matebeleland South.
Speaking at the party’s star rally in Bulawayo, Sibangalizwe accused ZANU-PF of exploiting his father’s name to gain support for the upcoming elections. He also expressed concern about the cultural significance of holding all-night events, which are associated with witchcraft and often result in the littering of the area with used condoms and drug paraphernalia. He said:

Zanu-PF wanted to hold a pungwe (all-night) gala at the late vice president Nkomo’s homestead at St Joseph in Maphisa. I stopped that nonsense because in our culture holding such events during the night is tantamount to witchcraft. In the past, we have also seen used condoms, empty containers of the illicit and lethal njengu scattered all over after such events.
</blockquote>
Sibangalizwe further announced that ZAPU would not be fielding a presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections, in order to focus its resources on parliamentary candidates in Matebeleland and Midlands provinces.
He encouraged supporters to vote for non-corrupt and non-violent candidates, while urging the party’s polling agents to safeguard ballot boxes diligently. He said:

On MPs and councillors, please vote for our candidates but for the presidential candidate use your discretion to vote for a candidate who is not a thief and murderer. We also do not want our youths to be given drugs and engage in violence.

He also appealed to the party’s supporters not to engage in violence or drug use. He also implored the party’s polling agents to protect the ballot boxes vigilantly, likening the task to guarding a corpse. Although the party does not currently have the financial means to pay its agents, Nkomo assured them that they would be paid as soon as possible. The rally was attended by various party supporters and candidates from all over the country.

Sibangalizwe Has Stopped ZANU-PF From Holding Joshua Nkomo All-Night

Police in Bulawayo broke a march organised Thursday by local pressure group Ibhetshu Likazulu in memory of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gukurahundi">Operation Gukurahundi</a> victims killed in the early 1980s.
According to media reports from Bulawayo, three activists were arrested during the foiled commemorations.
The three are:

i). Ibhetshu LikaZulu’s vice chairperson, Thamsanqa Ncube 
ii). Ibhetshu LikaZulu member, Melusi ‘Coltart’ Nyathi, and 
iii). Samukeliso Tshuma, leader of The Girls Table organisation.

Narrating the incident Thursday, Ibhetshu Likazulu secretary-general Mbuso Fuzwayo said some passers-by were also harassed by police during the incident. Fuzwayo said:

As an organisation, we were intending to march in memory of those who survived and those who were killed, raped but the government of Zimbabwe through the Zimbabwe Republic Police stopped us and sadly a lot of people who were passing by and those within the vicinity of the Joshua Nkomo statue were harassed.

The pressure group has, in the years, timed its Gukurahundi commemorations for <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Unity_Day">Unity Day</a>, celebrated every December 22.
Unity Day was declared when the late Nkomo and late President Robert Mugabe’s <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Unity_Accord">rival parties merged</a> in what ended the Gukurahundi massacres waged by the country’s security forces against civilians who were presumed to be sympathetic to Nkomo’s PF Zapu.
Gukurahundi, as it is commonly known, was an operation that was allegedly carried out by Mugabe’s government to track down former ZIPRA combatants who deserted Zimbabwe’s integrated military with weapons in protest over lack of equal treatment with those who waged the war under Mugabe’s ZANLA.
It is estimated that 20 000 civilians died at the hands of the Zimbabwe military during the dark period.

Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo has said the national apology on Gukurahundi was long dealt with when former President Robert Mugabe and former Vice President Joshua Nkomo through the 1987 unity accord.
Moyo was speaking at the Bulawayo State House Monday during the launch of a manual to guide community hearings into the Gukurahundi massacres. <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/2022/10/mnangagwa-buries-apologies-subject-as-he-launches-gukurahundi-hearings/">ZimLive</a> cites him as saying:

… That the national apology issue was resolved by former President Robert Mugabe and former Vice President Joshua Nkomo when the Unity Accord was signed in 1987.
That was agreed in your (Mnangagwa) discussion with the chiefs.

Moyo was presenting a summary of issues agreed upon between President Mnangagwa and traditional chiefs in Matabeleland on how the hearings will be conducted.
<h2>Some context:</h2>
Gukurahundi occurred in the 1980s, in the aftermath of Zimbabwe’s independence.
Then Prime Minister, Robert Mugabe deployed the North Korean-trained 5th Brigade to “deal” with the alleged threat of “dissidents” in those provinces.
An estimated 20 000, mostly Ndebele-speaking people died in the conflict.
Government critics including the opposition have over the years been calling upon authorities to compensate the families of Gukurahundi victims and to publicly ask for forgiveness.
The Gukurahundi issue was a sensitive topic during Mugabe’s era but that changed when Mnangagwa came to power and <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/04/14/i-would-like-to-see-people-debating-gukurahundi-emmerson-mnangagwa/">allowed “debate” on the subject. </a>
The issue was then assigned to the Retired Justice Sello Nare-chaired National Peace and Reconciliation Commission but was later passed on to traditional chiefs.
Mnangagwa further agreed with chiefs that Gukurahundi should be defined “as the state and organised dissidents and not a Ndebele-Shona cultural conflict so as to address current perceptions and achieve national healing and peace.”
Each chief will spearhead the resolution of Gukurahundi issues by presiding over hearings or consultations in his or her area of jurisdiction, according to a 14-page document produced by Chiefs’ Council president Fortune Charumbira.
That exhumations and reburial will be resolved on a case-by-case basis customs centric and the relevant chief should give guidance and direction.
Mnangagwa presided over the launch of the start of the Gukurahundi hearings in Bulawayo.

Gukurahundi: Govt Says Mugabe And Nkomo Resolved The National Apology Issue

Some Zimbabweans believe that ZAPU leader Sibangilizwe Nkomo has every right to demand the exhumation of his father, the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo, from the National Heroes Acre for reburial in rural Kezi.
Nkomo died on 1 July 1999 and was buried at the National Heroes Acre in Harare amid indications that he wanted to be buried in Kezi, a village in Matobo District, Matabeleland South Province.
Speaking at a memorial service of the late ZAPU leader, Dumiso Dabengwa in Ntabazinduna on Monday, Sibangilizwe said he wants the remains of his father to be removed from the National Heroes Acre and the call has received support from ZAPU and some citizens.
Discussing the issue on CITE’s Twitter Space, This Morning on Asakhe, the participants said the Nkomo family has the right to decide where his remains should rest. Said a participant:

Sibangilizwe Nkomo has every right to have this conversation even with his family because if Joshua Nkomo’s family had refused for him to be buried there, there would have been the first family to do that and we have always heard how the State has always intimidated families after the death of National heroes.
The Nkomo family has every right to exhume his body and go and bury him where they want or where he requested to be buried because remember Joshua Nkomo was treated as a traitor by ZANU-PF after Independence because he wanted reconciliation, got into the Unity Accord for the good of the country.
You hear people saying Sibangilizwe is using that for his political Capital but at the end of the day it’s his father, it’s the Nkomo family that has to decide where to bury their father.

Another participant said the Nkomo family was arm-twisted into burying the late nationalist at the National Heroes Acre, thereby betraying what he stood for.
Professor Shepherd Mpofu said the Nkomo family should have challenged the move by the Government to bury Nkomo at the monumental graveyard. He said:

What Sibangilizwe brings across is the problems associated with the failures of creating Zimbabwe as a people.
We knew that he didn’t want to be buried at National Heroes Acre but because of national cohesion, the need to create this United Zimbabwe, and the euphoria that actually comes after his death where every Zimbabwean is sort of seeming United, it was befitting for him to buried at the National Shrine.
I think the Nkomo family should have challenged that act then but again Mugabe wanted to preside over Nkomo’s dead body and weaponize it for his political agenda which he has successfully done for a long time at that shrine.

Ironically, the late former President Robert Mugabe was not buried at the National Heroes Acre after he reportedly instructed his family to bury his remains in a tamper-proof grave at his rural home in Kutama.
However, another participant said there is a need for the family to reveal the reasons why they want to exhume him 23 years later.

"Nkomo Family Has Every Right To Exhume Joshua Nkomo’s Remains"

ZAPU president Sibangilizwe Nkomo wants the remains of his father, the late liberation war hero and former Vice President Joshua Nkomo, to be exhumed from the National Heroes Acre in Harare and reburied in Kezi.
Nkomo said it was his father’s wish to be buried at his rural home in Kezi, Matebeleland South Province.
Speaking at Dumiso Dabengwa’s third-anniversary commemorations in Bulawayo on Monday, Nkomo said:

I am one of those people that was tasked by my father to resist his burial at the national heroes acre.
He made it very clear that he did not want to be buried at any heroes acre.
He said he wanted to lie beside his parents. This is a task that I was given and it lives with me day in and day out.
I was not able, in 1999, to fulfil his wishes because I was in the minority against the decision to bury him in Harare.
However, as an individual, I feel I still have the task, to fulfil my father’s request.

Nkomo, affectionately called “Father Zimbabwe” or “Umdala Wethu”, died on 1 July 1999 after a long battle with prostate cancer and was buried at the National Heroes Acre.
The ZAPU leader claimed that ordinary citizens are also demanding that Nkomo’s remains be exhumed from the National Heroes Acre. He said:

It is important for the nation to know that wherever we are going these days on our meet the people outreach programmes, people are asking one question: What are we doing about Joshua Nkomo’s grave in Harare?
It is not up to me to say I am going to exhume him. Yes, I can apply to the ministry of home affairs, but it’s up to the people to emphasise that they want him removed from that place. I cannot do it alone.
It is the people who make sure that they don’t want Joshua Nkomo resting with liars and thieves.

Late Vice President’s Son Wants Father’s Remains Exhumed From National Heroes Acre

ZAPU president Sibangilizwe Nkomo has scoffed at the view that the party has no supporters and is stuck in the past.
Nkomo, who is a son to the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo, made the comments at an event held to celebrate the party’s 60th anniversary, recently.
ZAPU was launched on 17 December 1961 under the late VP Nkomo and is the oldest political party in Zimbabwe.
The party was revived in recent years after some members grew disillusioned with the Unity Accord signed with ZANU in 1987 which resulted in the merging of the two parties. said Nkomo:

There is no doubt that there is no party with a past as glorious as that of ZAPU.
We have a rich history and that history is a serious heritage for our people.
Some will tell us that we are stuck in the past when we tell the story of ZAPU.
It is not that we are stuck, we cannot afford to be.

Nkomo asserted that ZAPU would continue celebrating its past without shame. He said:
<blockquote>
Had they (ZANU PF) not been jealous, they would not have confiscated our archives.
They would not have killed the makers of that history in genocide. They would not be claiming the exploits of our fathers.
They would not be embellishing their own history and they would not use the State media to tell a one-sided story of Zimbabwe.

In the 1980s, the Government confiscated properties and records belonging to ZIPRA, the military wing of ZAPU, after accusing the party of plotting an insurrection.

ZAPU Not Stuck In The Past - Nkomo

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sibangilizwe_Nkomo">Sibangilizwe Nkomo</a>, a son of the late founding father and nationalist Joshua Nkomo, has been elected the new ZAPU president, replacing the late Dumiso Dabengwa who died in 2019.
Nkomo, who is from Matabeleland South Province, won the presidency in a drama-filled elective congress on Saturday after he garnered 793 votes, against former party Secretary-General Strike Mkandla who only received 22 votes while the youngest candidate, Bernard Magugu managed 52 votes.
The three-day ZAPU elective congress comes after a series of postponements due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
Derek Katsenga from Mashonaland East was elected vice president after winning 309 votes, against Isabel Murambiwa with 284 votes and Buster Magwizi with 152 votes.
For the post of National Chairperson, former Treasurer General, Mark Mbayiwa emerged the winner with 431 votes, defeating Magwizi (54 votes), the party’s national organising secretary – Zolani Dlamini (47 votes), Patron Nketha (44 votes) and Richard Chitiyo with (23 votes).
The Secretary-General post was won by Mthulisi Hanana with 590 votes, against Vuyani Hlazo who polled 54 votes.
Former Deputy Secretary for International Relations, Future Msebele grabbed the Treasurer General post with 152 votes against Grace Noko with 90 votes, Bongani Halimane with 79 votes and Khethiwe Silundika with 79 votes as well.

Nkomo Elected ZAPU President

MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa has called on the government to return all properties seized from ZAPU in the 1980s.
The properties were taken over by then Prime Minister Robert Mugabe’s regime at the height of the governing ZANU’s hostilities with the once main opposition in the early 1980s.
The properties include farms dotted across the country, buildings in Bulawayo and factories.
Posting on Twitter on Monday, Chamisa said since July is a special month to remember the late Vice President, Joshua Nkomo, who was ZAPU president before the party was swallowed up by ZANU, the best way to honour him was to restore ZAPU properties to the rightful owners. Said Chamisa:
<blockquote>July is a special month as we remember Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo for his heroic contribution to the liberation struggle.
The best way to honour Dr Nkomo’s legacy is for the government to immediately return all ZPRA properties and all such properties that belonged to Dr Nkomo.</blockquote>
Responding to Chamisa, journalist Zenzele Ndebele <a href="https://twitter.com/zenzele/status/1412098502889455625">pointed out</a> that one of the ZAPU properties is a house in Gunhill, Harare, that is currently being used by Douglas Mahiya the ZANU PF Secretary for War Veterans.
<blockquote>In 2020, the Zimbabwe Liberation War Veterans Association (ZLWVA)’s Ignatius Mutsinze said the seizure of the properties was used by ZANU PF to divide liberation war fighters.</blockquote>
Mutsinze said the properties should have been handed back to the owners as early as 1987 when Mugabe and Nkomo signed the Unity Accord. He was quoted by <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/war-veterans-demand-government-return-of-zapu-properties/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> as saying:
These properties were taken way back in the early 80s but we were anticipating that by 1987 when there was the unity agreement, these properties would be given back to their rightful owners.
<blockquote>Those properties are still with our government, whether they have sold them or not, we do not know but we want an answer to that.
As war veterans, we believe that issue was used as a divide and rule tactic by the ruling party.
We want this to be addressed. Nitram Properties should be given back to its rightful owners.</blockquote>

Chamisa Calls For The Return Of ZAPU Properties To Honour Nkomo

The son of the revered late veteran nationalist and Vice President Joshua Nkomo, Sibangilizwe, said it is imperative to include the people in national dialogue for it to bring national unity.
Nkomo said though the 1987 Unity Accord succeeded in ending the Gukurahundi brutalities that were going on during the early to mid-1980s, the agreement did not bring real national unity.
He further claimed that even the Government of National Unity (GNU) failed because political party-led unity initiatives are only for political expediency. Said Nkomo:
<blockquote>The Unity Accord was a stop-gap measure to stop the killings, it was not a wedding during a good time but during sad times, it worked during that sad period to stop the killings. Unity will never come from parties but will only become real through the efforts of the general public.
Somehow people have to come together but not under a political outfit as has been the case. Political party unity-led initiatives are not working. We saw that even with the GNU, it failed.
Political party-led unity initiatives are only for political expediency, just like in the GNU where it worked for a while to calm people before the eating started and they forgot the people. The word unity is being abused for political expediency.</blockquote>
Nkomo called for a complete overhaul of Zimbabwe’s political system saying the system we have is a continuation of the murderous Rhodesian regime. He added:
<blockquote>The truth is a complete overhaul of the system is critical at the moment. The system we have now is just a continuation of the … Mugabe and colonial era.
Nothing has changed so far, only the faces have changed. Forty years on, Zimbabwe is still a troubled country.</blockquote>

Sibangilizwe Nkomo: Zimbabwe's Political System Is A Continuation Of Rhodesia

Sibangilizwe Nkomo, the son of liberation icon and former Vice President, the late Joshua Nkomo, has said Zimbabwe has lost direction under the leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Nkomo posited that the current government’s occupation with retaining political power instead of rebuilding the economy is making matters worse. Said Nkomo:
<blockquote>Our country is ever in a political mode, people are now fighting for a party name, we are ever in election mode.
To make matters worse, those who are ruling us are ever seized with the politics of power at the expense of the economy and uniting the nation.
We are really in a fix and heading nowhere. Factories are now ghost towns, unemployment levels have reached abnormal levels, everything is just upside down, this is why I am saying wherever he is, uMdalawethu uNkomo is turning in his grave.
This is not what he fought for, this is not what he stood for, this is not what he always preached.</blockquote>
Nkomo noted that soldiers were now a common feature in the day to day lives of civilians and said they are being abused by politicians. He said:
<blockquote>We never used to see soldiers in the streets, like now. It’s clear the army is being abused for whatever gain it is.</blockquote>
Nkomo’s remarks come as the nation commemorates the passing on of uMdalawethu or Father Zimbabwe as he was popularly known.
The revered nationalist died on July 1, 1999, and was buried at the National Heroes Acre on July 5 the same year.

Zimbabwe Is Going Nowhere Under ED - Nkomo

The family of the former Vice President of Zimbabwe, Joshua Nkomo has been dragged to court after its alleged failure to service the stands and provide title deeds to beneficiaries of the stands the family is developing.
The Chronicle reports that the 12 families, who bought the residential stands between 2002 and 2005 are accusing  ANZAC Investments, a company owned by the Nkomo family and led by Dr Nkomo’s daughter Ms Thandiwe Nkomo, of breaching of the agreement of sale entered between the parties.
They allege that ANZAC was as per the agreement of sale supposed to service the land but has failed to uphold its end of the bargain despite the families having fully paid for the properties.
The families revealed in their court papers that they now want an order directing ANZAC Investments to comply with the terms of the agreement of sale by transferring the properties into their names.

Former VP Joshua Nkomo’s Family Dragged To Court Over Residential Stands

Matobo Rural District Council has been accused of delaying the approval of a site for the construction of Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo School of Tourism and Hospitality in the area.
The accusations are being made by Lalangwe Mbambangwe Memorial Trust, a non-governmental organisation founded by a former ZPRA cadre, Linganiso Mdabuko Nyathi, in honour of the late former Vice President Joshua Nkomo.
Nyathi told News Day that the Trust engaged the Council back in 2011 but nothing has happened to date. He said:
<blockquote>Despite Matobo RDC’s retrogressive attitude of not pegging our site, we are focused. Their action is viewed as deprivation of development to the community.
Since 2011, the local authority has been dragging its feet in approving the site for us.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Matobo RDC chief executive officer Elvis Sibanda said that he could not remember the project and would have will have to reconsult his records and respond to the matter on Monday when he comes back to office.

Council Accused Of Delaying The Construction Of Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo School Of Tourism And Hospitality

<blockquote>Towards a shared Zimbabwean dream
The liberation icon, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Joshua_Nkomo" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Joshua Nkomo</a>, said at the signing of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Unity_Accord" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Unity Accord</a> in 1987, “… unity is not just the signing of documents, unity is what follows.”
What has followed is a country at odds with its own ideals, a country that speaks the rhetoric of unity yet its citizens are imprisoned by deeply rooted divisions made worse by the government’s inability to acknowledge the trauma and suffering of its citizens.
The injustices of the past continue to be swept under the carpet. The colonial-era injustices, the liberation war era injustices, and post-independence injustices must all be negated through a national process of truth-telling, nation-building, national healing and rehabilitative restorative justice.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gukurahundi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Gukurahundi</a> atrocities remain glossed over and dismissed as mere “disturbances” while the victims continue to live with the trauma of unhealed wounds left to fester through insincerity and negligence. The very fabric of the Zimbabwean dream continues to be eroded by the plague of greed and corruption as our people languish in poverty and hunger.
Murambatsvina left many homeless and hopeless. Violent elections and politically instigated violence have left many dead and wounded. Government policies have eroded peoples’ savings and wealth. Pensioners and the vulnerable are without any cushion against the brutality of the harsh economic circumstances.
This is not unity. True peace and reconciliation require us to sincerely address the divisions in our society, to give voice to those who are marginalised and oppressed, to work together in common purpose to ensure the promises of liberation are enjoyed by every single Zimbabwean without fear or favour. Until this day comes, we cannot claim to be united or free.
We cannot preach unity when we pursue economic policies that widen the divide between the rich and the poor. We have seen the imposition of austerity measures that punish the poor, for the mistakes made by the selfish, ruling elite.
These economic policies do not unite us. They divide us.
Inequality is growing. It’s one of the biggest threats to the security of our country, and to our unity as a people.
This is not the unity Joshua Nkomo signed for.
The MDC will continue to fight for a truly united Zimbabwe where the ideals of freedom, democracy, peace, and reform belong to every citizen of our beloved nation.
True unity must be beyond just the unity of parties or its leaders. It must be a unity of all people of our beautiful Zimbabwe in vision, ideals, values and destiny.
We must all build the Zimbabwe we deserve and want-the shared Zimbabwean dream.
United we stand.</blockquote>

In a statement, Vice President Dr Joshua Nkomo, Sibangilizwe, said he attended an MDC Alliance rally at White City Stadium in Bulawayo on Saturday last week to build peace bridges.
He said he attends all rallies of all political parties to preach peace. Said Sibangilizwe:

Joshua Nkomo's Son Reveals Why He Attended Chamisa's Rally

Joshua Nkomo Cultural Movement (JNCM) chairperson and son to the late Joshua Nkomo, Sibangilizwe, appealed to Government to have the statue of his father erected in Harare.
The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) in 2014 revealed that Government was working on erecting Nkomo’s statue in Harare. In December 2013,  Government unveiled Nkomo’s statue in Bulawayo. Nkomo said a second statue of the late Vice President is available.
Meanwhile, JNCM will hold the late Joshua Nkomo’s centenary commemorations which have been running under the theme: “A Reflection of Ethical leadership.” The commemorations which will start on Nkomo’s birth day on June 7. A guest lecture will be held by a yet to be named Government official at the Zimbabwe Defence University.  JNCM will also hold a dinner dance on June 8 before closing with a soccer match involving Highlanders and Dynamos on June 9. This will be the first time JNCM will be holding Nkomo’s commemorations outside Matabeleland region.

Joshua Nkomo's Family Appeals To Govt To Erect Statue In Harare

The National Patriotic Front (NPF) has said that it has the right to use former Vice President Joshua Nkomo’s images in its campaign material because he is the national symbol. The party, which has been endorsed by former president Robert Mugabe, has denied using the images to lure voters in the forthcoming harmonised elections.
Said NPF spokesperson, Jealousy Mawarire,

<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/04/10/joshua-nkomos-family-dismiss-chamisas-claims/">State media reports that Chamisa claims Nkomo’s family offered him the late Vice President’s </a><a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/04/10/joshua-nkomos-family-dismiss-chamisas-claims/">traditional sceptre (intonga) when he visited the liberation war leader’s Matsheumhlophe house</a>. However Chamisa dismisses the reports as lies. Said Chamisa:
<blockquote>I also noted that there have been outright distortions, lies and spin around my visit to the Joshua Nkomo museum and my meeting with Jabulani. Yet lies have temporary legs and the truth shall be revealed in the fullness of time.</blockquote>
Chamisa said he was told he was the first national leader to pay homage at the Joshua Nkomo Museum. He also ordered the MDC-T led Bulawayo City Council to ensure the museum is upgraded. Said Chamisa:
<blockquote>…while the trip to the Dr Joshua Nkomo Museum enabled me the opportunity to shake hands with a glorious and revolutionary past.
I felt tears welling in my eyes when I was told that I was the first national leader to pay homage at the iconic Father Zimbabwe’s memorial monument in Matsheumhlope.
For me, the late Dr Joshua Nkomo will always be a source of inspiration, notwithstanding the regime’s perennial attempt to belittle and undermine his national contribution.
He will always be an undisputed national hero and I immediately ordered the Bulawayo City Council to ensure that the museum is upgraded to a level of a strategic national institution that does not have to pay rates to the local authority. The Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo museum is a strategic national heritage state that honours the life of one of Zimbabwe’s undisputed national heroes.
The Nkomo brand is a towering brand that must be accorded veneration by all of us, especially the local authority that we control. Sparing such an institution the obligation to pay rates will be the city’s own humble way of paying tribute to the mammoth and indefatigable national brand that was Joshua Nkomo.</blockquote>

Chamisa Responds To Reports On Joshua Nkomo Museum Visit

MDC-T President Nelson Chamisa has<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/04/10/joshua-nkomos-family-dismiss-chamisas-claims/" rel="noopener" target="_blank"> come under fire from State Media</a> for allegedly claiming that he had been offered Dr Nkomo’s traditional staff/sceptre. State media says
<blockquote>Addressing an MDC-Alliance rally in Bulawayo, made up largely of people from outside Bulawayo, Mr Chamisa falsely claimed that the Nkomo family had told him that he was the first “national leader” to visit the Joshua Nkomo Museum in Matsheumhlophe suburb since Dr Nkomo’s death in 1999.
“I was so touched when I went to Dr Nkomo’s Matsheumhlophe house. I was going there to see the history of this nation. However, the family told me one thing, they said ever since the death of Dr Nkomo I am the first national leader to visit the house, they even offered to give me Dr Nkomo’s traditional sceptre (intonga),’’ Mr Chamisa claimed.</blockquote>
However, Chamisa never said that he was offered Dr Nkomo’s traditional walking stick. What he actually said was that he was offered a walking stick. Nowhere does he say he was offered Joshua Nkomo’s walking stick.

In an interview with The Chronicle, Joshua Nkomo’s son, Mr Sibangilizwe Nkomo denied the family offered MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa the late Vice President’s traditional sceptre (intonga).
Chamisa claimed the family had offered him Nkomo’s traditional sceptre (intonga) when he visited the liberation war leader’s Matsheumhlophe house. He also said the Nkomo family had told him that he was the first national leader to visit the Joshua Nkomo Museum. However, Nkomo’s son said he did not meet Chamisa nor did they offer him his late father’s sceptre. Said Sibalizwe:
<blockquote>There is nothing like that. Chamisa went to the Matsheumhlope house which is now a museum at the invitation of the chief executive officer of the Joshua Nkomo foundation, Mr Jabulani Hadebe. None of the family members knew about his visit. I live in the Pelandaba house and it is a lie that he met any of the family members unless he came here as a ghost. In actual fact, I have never met Chamisa in my life. It’s not a matter that you can joke about. It’s an abomination that he can talk cheaply about intonga ka baba. That’s no ordinary stick but it carries so much significance in terms of culture and tradition, it’s the property of our ancestors. It represents our family’s ancestry and it is unacceptable for him to joke around with such matters. In our African tradition, we do not offer intonga ka baba to anyone one who is not a member of the family. None of the care takers at the museum know where that stick is so we really do not know what he is talking about.</blockquote>

Joshua Nkomo's Family Dismiss Chamisa's Claims

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has claimed that he challenged Zimbabwe nationalists Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo to fight each other using pistols during the days of the Second Chimurenga liberation war. Obasanjo said this at the African CEOs Forum in Abidjan explaining that he took the drastic step to make the two leaders that they should unite instead of fighting against each other as well as the Ian Smith led minority government. Said Obasanjo,
<blockquote>At some stage, Nkomo and Mugabe began using the guns we were supplying them to kill each other.
I tried to bring them to Nigeria for talks but they avoided each other and came at different times. However, they were to later meet and I had them sitting beside me. I had two pistols loaded so I said to them, ‘I will give you each a gun so you can fight. The one who dies we will bury him here while the one who wins will go and fight the struggle.
They were surprised and argued it was too drastic a way to resolve their differences. I must say it seemed to have worked because just after that they went and formed the Patriotic Front and won independence for Zimbabwe.</blockquote>

I Challenged Mugabe, Nkomo To Kill Each Other To Resolve Disputes Claims Obasanjo

Former Cabinet minister Dumiso Dabengwa has claimed that the late Father Zimbabwe,  Joshua Nkomo, was responsible for President Robert Mugabe’s political career. According to Dabengwa, without Nkomo’s mentorship, Mugabe would have remained a teacher and a nonentity in politics. Speaking during Nkomo’s Centenary Memorial Lecture at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg South Africa on Saturday, Dabengwa said
<blockquote>Nkomo recruited Robert Mugabe into nationalist politics. Nkomo catapulted Mugabe into national prominence during the NDP (National Democratic Party) and later Zapu. Mugabe had been working as a teacher in Ghana when Nkomo paid visits to that country for events such as the All-Africa People’s Congress in 1958.
When Nkomo was exploring the acceptability of Mugabe into the NDP, he sent and instructed Ackim Ndlovu and me (Dabengwa) to meet Mugabe at the Bulawayo Airport and take him to Nkomo’s home in Pelandaba. Mugabe was later introduced to the party members at a rally in Bulawayo, and he became the NDP’s secretary for information and publicity.</blockquote>
