<a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Jim_Kunaka">Jim Kunaka</a> has rejoined ZANU PF after spending years in the opposition, which he has now denounced as ideologically bankrupt.
ZANU PF Secretary for Administration, Obert Mpofu, told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/jim-kunaka-re-joins-zanu-pf/">The Herald</a> that Kunaka was welcome to rejoin, as “he is a product of the party”.
Addressing journalists in Harare on Thursday, Kunaka said he was back in ZANU PF as an ordinary card-carrying member. He said:

I was myopic and misled by anger and disgruntlement. I am a ZANU PF member to the core and no one can take it away from me. This is my decision and I am not influenced by anyone.
I am ready to work for the party as a messenger. I am ready to deliver. I am ready to work for the party to ensure Harare is back to ZANU PF.
The truth of the matter is that there is nothing there; opposition parties are full of failures.
Some of them have been MPs, but they have nothing to show for it. Why should I follow such blind people?
I said there was nothing that could stop me from returning home. This is my decision as a politician.

Kunaka, a former ZANU PF Harare Provincial Youth chairman, is mostly known for having led a violent youth group called Chipangano, which meted out violence on opposition party members in Harare.
In 2018, when he appeared before the Motlanthe Commission, Kunaka claimed that he had played a key role in violence meted out on MDC-T, especially during the 2008 elections.
He accused the army of killing people during the 1 August 2018 protests and urged the commission to consider ZANU-PF’s alleged history of violence.

Jim Kunaka Re-joins ZANU PF, Says Opposition Is Ideologically Bankrupt

Former Local Government Minister, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Saviour_Kasukuwere/">Saviour Kasukuwere</a>, has launched a fresh bid to join the 2023 presidential race. The former ZANU PF Political Commissar has applied for direct access to the Constitutional Court to challenge the nullification of his candidature by the High Court. 
Kasukuwere’s eligibility to contest the August 23 election was challenged by a private citizen, Mr Lovedale Mangwana, who argued that Kasukuwere had spent 18 consecutive months outside the country. Mr Mangwana won the legal battle after the High Court nullified Kasukuwere’s candidature. The Supreme Court also threw out Kasukuwere’s appeal against the High Court judgment.
Kasukuwere was barred from running on the grounds that he had been residing outside his constituency for over 18 months, which violated the Electoral Act. He has been in South Africa since 2017, following the ouster of the late former President Robert Mugabe.
Saviour Kasukuwere’s move to approach the Constitutional Court comes after former ZANU PF youth leader, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jim_Kunaka/">Jim Kunaka</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/07/30/jim-kunaka-approaches-constitutional-court-over-kasukuweres-disqualification/">approached the same Court</a> challenging the High Court ruling that was upheld by the Supreme Court. Kunaka argued that the High Court ruling by Justice David Mangota violated the constitutional right of voters to vote for their preferred presidential candidate. 
Jim Kunaka argued that he nominated Saviour Kasukuwere as a presidential candidate, stating that he was his preferred candidate. He believes that the court’s decision infringed on his right to freely participate in politics, which is protected by sections 58 and 67 of the Zimbabwean Constitution. Kunaka seeks direct access to the Constitutional Court to set aside the judgement, as he believes his constitutional rights have been violated. He argues that it is in the interest of justice to set aside the judgement and allow Kasukuwere to stand as a candidate in the forthcoming election, as there are millions of people who will vote and thousands who will vote for Kasukuwere.

Kasukuwere Launches Fresh Bid For 2023 Presidential Race

Former ZANU PF youth leader, Jim Kunaka, has approached the Constitutional Court, challenging a High Court ruling that was upheld by the Supreme Court barring Saviour Kasukuwere from contesting as a presidential candidate in the 23 August 2023 elections, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200014675/fresh-court-battle-to-rescue-tyson-bid">The Standard</a>.
In his application seeking access to the ConCourt, Kunaka said the ruling by High Court judge Justice David Mangota violated the constitutional right of voters to vote for their preferred presidential candidate. Kunaka said in his submission:
<blockquote>
I nominated Saviour Kasukuwere as a presidential candidate. He was my candidate of choice.
It is my respectful contention that the decision of the court in question infringes on my right to choose a candidate of my choice to participate freely in politics as protected by sections 58 and 67 of the constitution of Zimbabwe.
The judgement of the court was a constitutional judgement pursuant to an application made by the first respondent in terms of Section 85(1).
I, therefore, seek direct access to this honourable court to set aside the judgement in question on the basis that my constitutional rights have been infringed.
There are millions of people who will vote in that election, and there are thousands who will vote for Kasukuwere…
It is, therefore, in the overwhelming interest of justice that the judgement be set aside and that he be allowed to stand as a candidate in the forthcoming election.

Kunaka cited Lovedale Mangwana, the ZANU PF activist who challenged Kasukuwere’s candidacy resulting in his disqualification, Kasukuwere, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, the Judicial Services Commission and Attorney General, Prince Machaya, as respondents.
Lawyer Dumisani Dube told The Standard that even though the application by Kunaka doesn’t stop the decision of the Supreme Court, the application was critical and urgent. Said Dube:

The application by Kunaka doesn’t stop the decision of the Supreme Court.
However, due to the importance of the matter in the constitutional jurisprudence of the country, the court may set the matter down urgently before the election date.
I also think Kasukuwere should have been the one who approached the Constitutional Court, as he had a direct and substantial interest in the matter and not a third party, who might not have the locus standi.
</blockquote>
“Locus standi” is a legal phrase that means a right to appear in a court or before any body on a given question.

Jim Kunaka Approaches Constitutional Court Over Kasukuwere's Disqualification

Former ZANU PF member <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Jim_Kunaka">Jim Kukana</a> said that Saviour Kasukuwere’s campaign team is mobilising a mass demonstration in all the provinces to protest the self-exiled former cabinet minister’s disqualification from the 23 August presidential race.
On Thursday, 27 July, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court ruling that nullified Kasukuwere’s Presidential bid.
Addressing the media in Harare on Friday, Kunaka, one of the members leading Kasukuwere’s campaign, said they have taken the political route because the judiciary has been captured by ZANU PF. <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/we-are-itching-for-a-fight-says-kasukuwere-campaign-team-mobilises-for-nationwide-protests/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> quoted Kunaka as saying:
<blockquote>
Whether Mnangagwa likes it or not, we are going to do everything to make sure that our Presidential candidate appears on the ballot paper come August 23.
There are issues that need a political solution so we have changed the gear now, we are now engaging in another level of politics.
We don’t care and we don’t mind that Mnangagwa claims to be the police, claims to be the army, claims to be the courts, judiciary.
If he is going to deal with us let it be, what we want to see in Zimbabwe is a democracy, he should not choose an opponent to contest with, he is just like Saviour Kasukuwere.

Kunaka, the alleged former leader of the notorious Mbare-based Chipangano group, said the upcoming elections are a sham and have already been rigged by the judges. He said:
<blockquote>
Already this election is a rigged election, rigged by the courts, he (Mnangagwa) is using the courts to send a signal that he is a winner already.
Just imagine by dismissing those 12 MPs from CCC already ZANU PF has pocketed 12 uncontested MPs they have councillors and they already have senators.
There is Kasiyamhuru and Busha who do not stay in Zimbabwe yet they are on the ballot contesting to be president.
We are going to mobilise our people across ten provinces sooner the better. We are going to make this loud and clear that it’s now high time we take the bull by its horns.
If it means they are going to kill us let it be, if they are going to arrest us let it be, Jails are not meant for the animals they are meant for the people.

Kunaka together with some senior ZANU PF officials was ousted from the party at the ZANU PF 6th National People’s Congress in 2014. He was part of Joice Mujuru’s Zimbabwe People First.

Kasukuwere’s Campaign Team Plan Nationwide Protests

ZANU PF Original leader Jim Kunaka has blamed ZANU PF and the City of Harare for the recent clashes in Mbare, Harare, that resulted in the loss of lives and significant damage to property.
Kunaka, who allegedly led the Mbare-based violent Chipangano group, spoke to <a href="https://openparly.com/two-organisations-responsible-for-mupedzanhamo-skirmishes-according-to-jim-kunaka/">Open Parly ZW</a> about the background of the conflicts between ZANU PF and CCC activists that resulted in the burning down of market stalls at Mupedzanhamo Flea Market.
Kunaka claimed that ZANU PF seeks to control Mbare and allocate vending spaces to its supporters while keeping opposition activists out. He said:
<blockquote>
The problem of clashes between the two political parties ZANU PF and CCC is being caused by ZANU PF.
I am saying so because they are fighting to take control of Mbare.
We all know that in 2018 Mbare was won by the CCC at the constituency level.
One ward went to CCC, and one ward in which people are fighting today went to ZANU PF.
In 2008 there was a mixture of people from different political parties in that market.
But MDC-T supporters trading at the Mupedzanhamo market were chased away from the market.
Now, when the government shut down the market to allow the council to rehabilitate it.
The traders who were forcefully removed from the market saw an opportunity to claim back what belongs to them.
They have approached the City of Harare department responsible for markets, requesting them to give them back the 20 stalls.

Kunaka accused a local ZANU PF youth leader of orchestrating the attacks targetting CCC activists resulting in the running battles. He said:
<blockquote>
The problem has been created by the provincial youth chairman called Mahachi, he is the one who is sending ZANU PF youths from other wards coming to fight the CCC guys who are operating a flea market.
He also blamed the violence on Harare City Council’s alleged failure to create more vending sites for residents which led to fighting for space. Said Kunaka:
I put the whole blame for what is happening on the City of Harare.
The relevant department should be creating more vending sites.
There is no employment in our country and vendors are increasing at an alarming rate on a daily basis.
It means the local authority is not being creative.
They should have created more markets within Mbare because the spaces are there.

Jim Kunaka Blames Two Organisations For Mbare Violence

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has refused to approve a Robert Gabriel Mugabe Memorial Gala that was set for Zimbabwe Grounds on Saturday, 17 September 2022 but did not give any reasons for the decision.
The gala had been planned by the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Legacy Movement fronted by former ZANU PF youth leader Jim Kunaka.
Kunaka wrote a letter to the police on 12 September notifying them to hold the gala in terms of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act [Chapter 11:23].
In response to Kunaka, Officer Commanding Police Harare South District, Chief Superintendent, M Majojo, said the gala has not been approved. He wrote:

Reference is made to your letter dated 12 September 2022… In the letter, you notified to hold a Robert Gabriel Mugabe memorial gala at Zimbabwe Grounds, Highfield, Harare from the 17th to the 18th of September 2022 from 1700 to 0600 hours.
May you be advised that the notice to hold a Robert Gabriel Mugabe memorial gala is not approved

Police Block Robert Gabriel Mugabe Memorial Gala

Jim Kunana who had been in remand prison since 25 December 2020 was today released on $15 000 bail. According to Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, Munyaradzi Bwanya was representing Kunaka and managed to secure his release 50 days after he was arrested.
Said ZLHR:
<blockquote>JUST IN: Our lawyer <a class="css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1n1174f r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0" data-focusable="true" dir="ltr" href="https://twitter.com/MunyaBwanya" role="link">@MunyaBwanya </a>has ensured that Jim Kunaka’s 50-day detention ends by securing his release from remand prison on RTGS$15 000 bail.</blockquote>
Kunaka was reportedly given these bail conditions by Justice Chitapi:

<li>Kunaka to report once a week on Fridays at Waterfalls Police Station,</li>
<li>He should continue residing at his given residential address</li>
<li>He should not interfere with state witnesses until his matter is finalized.</li>
</ol>
Kunaka was arrested on Christmas Day in December as he was on his way to celebrate Christmas with his family. He was later on charged with incitement to participate in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breach of peace or bigotry, and an alternative charge of incitement of gatherings of more than 50 people without permission and contravening the Public health (Covid 19 prevention, containment, and treatment).  Another activist, student activist <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/28/uz-student-allan-moyos-bail-application-dismissed/">Allan Moyo is still in pre-trial</a> detention since 7 December after he was arrested for saying President Mnangagwa has failed the masses.

Former ZANU PF youth leader, Jim Kunaka was forced to delay the burial of his 12-year-old son who died at Parktown hospital in Harare last Sunday as results for his COVID-19 tests are not yet back.
Kunaka says his son died at the hospital on where he had been taken on Saturday after complaining of a severe headache.
The former leader of Chipangano, a Zanu PF vigilante group from Mbare, told Daily News that he now had to wait for another week to have another test done. He added:

<div>You can imagine how frustrating it is that I have to wait for the doctor who does the forensic post-mortem because he comes once a week.</div>

<div>I have to wait again for the Covid test. In this difficult economic environment it is expensive to run a funeral for two weeks. It is also painful as a parent to be unable to bury my son for this long.</div>

Former ZANU PF Youth Leader Forced To Delay Burial Of Son As COVID-19 Results Take Long

A pressure group, Wabantu Movement Zimbabwe, has notified the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) of its intention to stage a demonstration in Harare on June 29 against abuse, torture and the ill-treatment of citizens as well as the shooting of two workers in Gweru by their Chinese employer.
In a letter dated 25 June 2020 and addressed to S. Matongo, Chief Superintendent Officer Commanding Police Harare Suburban District, one of the leaders of the pressure group, Jim Kunaka, said the protestors will hand over a petition to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and another one to the Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe. Kunaka wrote:
<blockquote>RE: NOTIFICATION TO STAGE A DEMONSTRATION AGAINST ABUSE OF ZIMBABWEANS BY CHINESE FOREIGNERS IN ZIMBABWE ON THE 29th OF JUNE 2020 FROM 800 HOURS TO 1700 HOURS.
This letter seeks to notify your highly esteemed office of our intention to hold a peaceful demonstration against abuse, torture, ill-treatment and latest case of the gunning down of our fellow brothers and sisters by Chinese nationals in our country.
Our demonstration will take place outside the Chinese Embassy in Harare on the 29th of June 2020.
This noble cause is being spearheaded by Wabantu Movement watchdog which seeks to safeguard and ensure that the National Objectives as enshrined in Chapter 2 of the Zimbabwean Constitution are respected and adhered to.
The people will gather at the Africa Unity square which is at the corner of Sam Nujoma and Nelson Mandela Avenue at 0800 Hours, then we will proceed with Sam Nujoma Street situated at the corner of Samora Machel and Sam Nujoma Street.
The people will camp outside the President’s offices, two of our members will hand over the petition to the President.
Once the President has received our petition, we will then proceed and march to the Chinese embassy to hand over another petition to the Ambassador.
We are consciously aware of the Statutory Instrument S.I. 83 of 2020 and we are going to conduct our peaceful demonstration observing social distancing and all members will be wearing face masks to avoid the spread of COVID-19.
To this end, we are going to have marshals who with the help of your office maintain order, discipline and hygiene during the demonstration.
This letter serves as a notification to your office, it is not a request for permission.</blockquote>

Wabantu Movement To Stage Protest Against The Ill-treatment Of Citizens

In an interview with NewZimbabwe.com, former Zanu-PF youth leader Jim Kunaka says President Emmerson Mnangagwa must be forced to engage the opposition.
He said youths must force the dialogue because if they do not do so they will be destroying the future of their children. Said Kunaka:
<blockquote>They (Zanu PF) will not agree (to talks) because of pride and selfishness, and also because they claim to have won the general elections. But surprisingly, if they were voted overwhelmingly based on their election manifesto and campaign messages, why are they failing to resuscitate the economy for the benefit of ordinary citizens. Whether they have agreed or refused to come for dialogue, it is now up to us, the young generation to force it to happen, because if we don’t, we’re destroying the future of our children.</blockquote>

Youths Must Force Mnangagwa To Dialogue With Chamisa- Jim Kunaka

Zimbabwe Amalgamated Churches Council (ZACC) patron Mr Jimayi Muduvuri criticised former Zanu-PF Harare Province Youth chair Mr Jimu Kunaka’s testimony before a commission of inquiry led by former South African president Kgalema Motlanthe into the August 1, 2018 post-election violence.
Kunaka who is now a member of a breakaway faction of the National Patriotic Front said he used to be violent when he was a Zanu-PF member. However, Muduvuri said Zanu-PF was right in expelling Kunaka because he is a violent person. Said Muduvuri:
<blockquote>As churches, we are left with no option except to say that Zanu-PF might have been right after all in expelling him since by his own admission he is a violent person. But the bigger picture as a nation is that let us focus on the present challenges and how should we achieve our national objectives.</blockquote>

Churches Blast Jim Kunaka Over Motlanthe Commission Testimony

Human Rights Watch Southern Africa Director Dewa Mavhinga reports a group of men claiming to be police and army have abducted National Patriotic Front (NPF)’s Jim Kunaka’s wife in Chitungwiza demanding they disclose the whereabouts of Jim.
In an update, Mavhinga said Kunaka’s wife Loveness Sithole and Godknows Kunaka were taken by 7 men and were held at Harare Central Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), beaten up, and asked to disclose Jim Kunaka’s whereabouts. Loveness was forced to leave her 3-month old baby at home. They have now been released.
There were reports last week that police had surrounded Tendai Biti’s mother’s house in Harare.
