Sheffra Dzamara, the wife of Itai Dzamara—a journalist and pro-democracy activist who was forcibly disappeared ten years ago—says she will never stop seeking answers until she knows the whereabouts of her husband.
Itai Dzamara was abducted on 9 March 2015 after publicly criticising the Zimbabwean government for its handling of the country’s worsening economic crisis. Since then, he has not been seen or heard from, and his fate remains unknown.
A decade later, Sheffra has opened up to Amnesty International, recounting the events of that tragic morning and the painful years that have followed, as she continues her relentless search for justice and closure. She wrote:

9 March 2015, the day Itai was abducted, was a normal day.
He went to the barbershop at 9am wearing black shorts and his Manchester United jersey. Looking back at that morning, there are so many things I wish I had said to him. 
As I was preparing his breakfast for when he returned, my brother came running in, and told me that my husband was taken from the barbershop, by men driving a white Isuzu with no registration number.
When I heard this, fear engulfed me. I knew that it was an abduction. It was bad, I started shaking and crying. 
I did not know what to do or who to call, but I wanted to hear the facts directly from the people who witnessed the abduction. 
I took my daughter and put her on my back – she was two years old then – and went straight to the barbershop. 
When I arrived, I was still shaking. Even the barber and his colleague were shaking too as they told me what happened.
It was very fast. Five men walked in and said they were looking for a cattle thief. While Itai was perplexed, the men grabbed him and said they were taking him to the police to be questioned. Itai has not been seen since then.
I walked back from the barber like a zombie. I felt the whole world falling down on me. My head was spinning. I was not myself; I was confused and did not know what to do. I was shattered. I wanted to scream and cry but when I looked at my daughter and son, I knew I had to control myself.
I got home and changed my clothes, not realizing that I was wearing my skirt inside out. That’s how confused I was. 
I left my kids with my sister, and went with Itai’s brother Patson, and our lawyer to report the case to the police, who promised to investigate.
When I returned home around 6pm, I was afraid to go through the gate thinking maybe the abductors would come back and abduct us as well. I had to be strong for my kids. 
I did not sleep that night. My heart was pounding so hard. At 4am, I left the house and went to the barbershop hoping, praying that maybe, they would have brought him back, but he was not there.
The next day, my kids and I were taken to an organization where we stayed for a month for our safety. I lost weight from fasting and praying for my husband to be released from his abductors. I could not eat or sleep. My heart was always beating fast. I would cry at night so that my kids didn’t t see me.

Since Itai’s enforced disappearance, life has never been the same for Sheffra. She is constantly reminded of him whenever she looks at their children, as both resemble their father. She said:

Life has not been the same since Itai was abducted. The last 10 years have been hard. I am reminded of him every time I look at my kids because both look like their dad. 
It hurts not to have Itai in my life and to see my kids missing him and growing up without a father who loved them so dearly. I don’t have any answers, but I feel blessed to have my two kids. When I look at them l feel God’s grace.
The police never came back to give any update. As far as I know, they never even investigated the case. They were not interested in finding Itai. 
Even the Zimbabwe High Court order could not get the police find my husband or tell us what happened to him.
As a family we did everything to get answers. For the past 10 years the government of Zimbabwe has ignored my requests and turned a blind eye to the demand for answers by everyone including friends, activists, civil society organizations, media and the international community.
I wish for Itai to one day walk through the front door and hug me and the kids or to wake up to find that this was all a bad dream. If I must live without him, then I need answers, I need to know where he is.

Sheffra Dzamara: "I Won’t Stop Until I Know Where My Husband Is"

The family of journalist and human rights activist Itai Dzamara is seeking clarity about his fate nearly a decade after his abduction in March 2015.
Itai Dzamara was reportedly taken by suspected state security agents on March 9, 2015, while getting a haircut in his Glen Norah neighbourhood in Harare.
Before his disappearance, he had been staging protests outside the parliament building, urging the government of then-President Robert Mugabe to uphold human rights and tackle pressing economic issues.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.voanews.com/a/family-of-missing-zimbabwean-activist-wants-to-know-what-happened-to-him/7765028.html">VOA</a>, Sheffra Dorica Dzamara, Itai Dzamara’s wife, said the family wants to know what happened. She said:

It’s almost 10 years without knowing where Itai is. I don’t want to lie, it’s painful if I think about it and no one can tell what happened to him. He disappears from Zimbabwe and there is silence about it.
It’s really painful if I look at the kids. The first one was 7 and the other one was 2 – they are now grown up. They now ask: ‘Where is our daddy?’ and no one can explain what happened to him.
It’s really painful because I have no answers.

Sheffra Dzamara, the family’s sole breadwinner, struggles to make ends meet on approximately US$300 a month.
Charles Kwaramba, from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, said he obtained a court order in 2015 for the police to search for Dzamara.
He added that while they initially received updates from the police on their investigations, these reports ceased “a long, long time ago.” Said Kwaramba:

The investigation into Itai Dzamara’s disappearance is virtually dead. We have not received any reports or indications that the police are still pursuing any investigation into the matter.
Previously we used to receive from police what they were doing, how they were doing it, the places they were going to, how they were conducting their search. But that stopped a long, long time ago.
In some instances, we would meet with officials from the police. But that stopped a long time ago. … The state has completely abdicated that responsibility.

This week, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson, told VOA he could not comment on Dzamara’s case.
Lucia Masuka, head of Amnesty International in Zimbabwe, urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government to take action to locate the missing activist. She said:

Enforced disappearances are deployed as a strategy to silence activists, to silence those expressing dissent in this country, and the case that comes to mind is that of Itai Dzamara, well known for speaking out, against corruption, for speaking out against bad governance, and for leading peaceful protests.
The High Court had issued an order for authorities to investigate the case, bringing the perpetrators of this enforced disappearance to account and ensuring that the families of those affected secure justice in all such cases.

This call comes as the world commemorates the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances which is observed annually on August 30.
This day was established by the United Nations to raise awareness about the global issue of enforced disappearances and to honour those who have been forcibly disappeared.

Family Seeks Answers In Itai Dzamara's Disappearance Nearly 10 Years Later

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) MP, Prosper Mutseyami, has urged the government to accede to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances (ICPPED) to stop the culture of State-sponsored abductions.
ICPPED is an international human rights instrument established by the United Nations to prevent enforced disappearances, which, as defined in international law, constitute a crime against humanity.
“Enforced Disappearance” is defined as the arrest, detention, abduction, or any other form of deprivation of liberty by agents of the State or by persons or groups acting with the authorization, support, or acquiescence of the State.
This is followed by a refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of liberty or by concealment of the fate or whereabouts of the disappeared person, which places such a person outside the protection of the law.
Mutseyami, who is the MP for Dangamvura, made the call in the National Assembly while raising a point of national interest on Thursday. Said Mutseyami (<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200025711/govt-taken-to-task-over-abductions">via NewsDay</a>):

My point of national importance is that we have an International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances on the 30th of August, 2024. Zimbabwe has neither signed nor acceded to the convention.
This convention applies to the victims who would have died as a result of the disaster, like Cyclone Idai, it applies as well to enforced disappearances like we have situations we had, of people like Itai Dzamara, Patrick Nabenyama, and many others who passed on then.
My appeal, through your office, is to find means as to how we can come up with the motivation for our government to accede to this convention since I believe it is an important convention which applies to us as a country.

Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda ruled:

Nabanyama, who was a polling agent for the current Mayor of Bulawayo David Coltart in the June 2000 parliamentary elections, was reportedly kidnapped by suspected State security agents and war veterans from his home in Bulawayo.
He was never seen again and was in August 2010 declared dead by the courts.
Dzamara was a journalist-cum political activist who was snatched from a barbershop in Harare’s Glen View suburb by suspected State security agents on March 9, 2015.
The day before his enforced disappearance, Dzamara had addressed a rally in Harare where he called for mass action to address the deteriorating economic conditions.
In 2015, High Court judge Justice David Mangota ordered the government “to do all things necessary to determine Itai Dzamara’s whereabouts.”
However, the government has failed to give regular updates on Dzamara’s fate.

CCC MP Urges Government To Ratify UN Convention Against Enforced Disappearances

There is growing concern in Zimbabwe regarding the safety of opposition political activists after several of them were abducted, tortured, and injected with unknown substances by suspected state security agents. These injections have raised fears that they may contain a slow-acting poison, leading to the gradual deterioration of the victims’ health.
The opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change, led by Nelson Chamisa, has publicly accused state security agents and the ruling party, ZANU PF, of being responsible for these acts. They believe that these actions are part of a broader campaign of violence and attacks targeting opposition activists.
Victims have come forward to share their experiences, describing the physical and emotional pain they endured during their abductions and torture. Medical professionals suspect that the unknown substances injected into them may pose a long-term health risk. CCC spokesperson, Promise Mkwananzi, told <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/zimbabwe-dissidents-may-be-victims-of-serial-poison-plot-by-emmerson-mnangagwas-regime?ref=scroll">The Daily Beast</a>:

We are not aware what the substance is but experts in one of the cases indicated that it could lead to a deadly cancer within five years if not drained out [of the body] in time.

Womberaishe Nhende, a Harare city councillor and member of the CCC, says he was abducted, beaten, and injected with an unknown substance. He believes his involvement with the CCC and organising protests against the alleged theft of the August 2023 election made him a target. He said:

But l have never shifted on my resolve to fight for a better Zimbabwe for all, though disturbed by the methods of engagement being used by ZANU PF. I know for a fact it’s ZANU PF-sponsored state agents, for they were blunt in their conduct. 
The doctors have recommended further treatment outside Zimbabwe. Nothing conclusive has been reached hence the need to have further tests in highly specialized laboratories.

The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights has sent some victims for testing in South Africa, but the results are pending. International organizations like Amnesty International have condemned the worsening human rights situation in Zimbabwe and called for thorough investigations into these crimes.
The abductions and assaults on opposition activists have also raised concerns among the US and European embassies. The government has in the past dismissed claims of abductions as fabricated.

This concern is based on incidents involving Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri, and Netsai Marova, who reported their abductions but were later charged with faking their abduction to defame the government.

Abducted People Were Possibly Injected With Slow-killing Poison

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has urged the government to criminalise abductions and enforced disappearances in accordance with the country’s constitution. On the occasion of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the human rights organization emphasized the need for the government to ratify the United Nations International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. ZHLR said:

While in Section 53, the Constitution expressly outlaws torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, the lack of legislation that criminalises abduction and enforced disappearances has created a gap in domestic law and fuelled impunity.

ZHLR said the recent surge in reported cases of enforced disappearances, particularly targeting government critics, highlights the urgency for Zimbabwean authorities to establish a legal framework that prevents such grave human rights violations and ensures justice and redress for victims and their families. ZLHR also called upon both state and non-state actors to take effective measures in preventing enforced disappearances and holding the responsible parties accountable.
Several government critics, including opposition members and human rights defenders, have made claims of being abducted by suspected state security agents. Some notable cases include Itai Dzamara, a well-known activist advocating for political change, he was abducted in 2015 and has not been seen since.
Another one is Jestina Mukoko, a human rights activist and journalist. She was abducted in 2008 and held incommunicado for several weeks before being charged with plotting to overthrow the government. Tawanda Muchehiwa, a journalism student, was abducted in 2020 and allegedly tortured by suspected state security agents. Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri, and Netsai Marova claimed that they were abducted by suspected state security agents in 2020 after participating in a protest and reportedly subjected to torture and sexual assault.
The government denies these allegations, claiming they are staged to tarnish its image. Authorities often attribute the abductions to a “third force” aiming to discredit the government. Some analysts argue that these abductions are intended to instil fear among government critics who expose human rights violations and mismanagement by the government.

Itai Dzamara was forcefully taken on 9 March 2015 from a barber shop in Harare’s Glen View suburb by five men who accused him of stealing cattle. After handcuffing him, they forced him into a white truck with concealed number plates and drove off. 
Amnesty International believes he is a victim of enforced disappearance. Prior to his abduction, Dzamara called for former President Robert Mugabe to step down and criticized his handling of Zimbabwe’s economy. He had been targeted by state security agents, beaten, abducted, and unlawfully detained.
Despite a court order instructing the government to give regular updates on the search efforts for Dzamara, no meaningful investigation has taken place, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Amnesty Concerned Over Lack Of Progress In Dzamara Disappearance Investigation

The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has claimed that its member, Felix Biri was on Thursday 29 September 2022 kidnapped by ZANU PF members in Nyatsime.
In a statement see by Pindula News, the party led by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nelson_Chamisa">Nelson Chamisa</a>, a former Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services during the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Government_of_National_Unity">Government of National Unity (GNU)</a> said its security team was seized with the matter. Reads the statement:

ALERT: We have received a report that CCC member, Felix Biri has been kidnapped by Zanu PF members in Nyatsime this afternoon. He has been taken to a base where he’s being beaten by these thugs. Our security team is currently on its way to secure his release.
</blockquote>
This is one of many abduction cases which the party has reported in recent years.
The opposition and some human rights defenders claim that the government is responsible for many kidnappings in the country.
Meanwhile, the government has previously denied the accusations blaming “a third force” conducting the alleged abductions to soil its image.
The government also reckons the opposition stage the abductions to gain political mileage.

Dzamara was allegedly kidnapped by suspected state security agents on the 9th of March in 2015, his whereabouts are not known since then. 
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Moreblessing_Ali">Moreblessing Ali</a>, a CCC activist from Nyatsime was kidnapped in May this year and her mutilated body was discovered in a disused well weeks later. Her killer, Pius Mukandi alias Jamba, alleged to be a ZANU PF member, was arrested. 
Nyatsime has become a warzone since Ali’s death.

Zimbabwean journalist, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Itai_Dzamara">Itai Dzamara</a>, was allegedly kidnapped by suspected state security agents on the 9th of March in 2015, his whereabouts are not known since then.
There have been calls from human rights defenders and the international community on the government to make sure that Dzamara is safely brought back since it is its sole responsibility to protect every Zimbabwean citizen. 
In a message to mark the 7th anniversary since Dzamara disappeared, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said the government must ensure that assailants who kidnapped the journalist are brought to justice. They said:

Today marks the 7th anniversary of the disappearance of Itai Dzamara. We call on government to mobilise the full extent of its resources to investigate the circumstances surrounding Dzamara’s abduction and to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Dzamara’s family and the generality of Zimbabweans deserve answers on where he is, what happened on 9 March 2015 and who is responsible for his disappearance. We remind government of its constitutional obligations to safeguard the right to life and personal liberty, the right to participate in peaceful political activities, the right to demonstrate and petition peacefully and the citizens’ right to express themselves freely and without repercussion.

7 Years Later, Itai Dzamara's Whereabouts Not Known

The United States Embassy in Harare has expressed concern over Zimbabwe’s history of enforced disappearances of political activists and opposition members.

Among the nation’s prominent citizens who are yet to be accounted for is Itai Dzamara, a journalist-cum-political activist.
Dzamara was abducted by five suspected State agents while at a barbershop in Harare’s Glenview suburb on 9 March 2015 has not been seen since.
Below is a statement by United States Secretary of State, Anton Blinken to commemorate the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances:

Full Statement by the National Transitional Justice Working Group (NTJWG) in commemoration of International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.
Every year on 30 August, the National Transitional Justice Working Group (NTJWG) joins fellow Zimbabweans, the local human rights community, and the rest of the world in commemorating the United Nations International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.  
The commemoration of this day serves to call upon all governments across the world to have a firm commitment to combating impunity for enforced disappearances, to speak up against the practice and tolerance of enforced disappearances which undermine the respect for the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The commemoration of this day also draws attention to the fate of individuals who disappeared at the hands of the state and those whose whereabouts are unknown to their families, legal representatives and the nation as a whole.
In Zimbabwe, activists, human rights defenders, journalists and members of the opposition political parties have often become victims of enforced disappearances, a tactic that is often used to silence opposition and criticism. According to the United Nations, in 2019 alone 49 cases of abductions and torture were reported in Zimbabwe, without investigations leading to perpetrators being held to account.
In 2020, this disturbing trend continued, and it was reported that three female opposition activists Joanna Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marowa had been forcibly disappeared in Harare, assaulted and dumped 48 hours after their abduction.
Following their enforced disappearance, the trio was arrested and persecuted for speaking out about their experience amidst accusations of lying about their ordeal.
Equally disturbing was the abduction of a second-year media student Tawanda Mucheihwa who was abducted in Bulawayo on 30 July 2020, a day before planned demonstrations which had been called by what is now known as the July 31 Movement.
Despite evidence pointing to the involvement of a local popular car hire company, no meaningful investigations have been carried out and no arrests have been made.
Zimbabwe’s history of violence is characterised by enforced disappearances as seen during the Gukurahundi massacres in the Matabeleland and Midlands provinces from early 1983 to late 1987 and during the various epochs of election-related violence.
Despite the overwhelming evidence of enforced disappearances, the Government of Zimbabwe (GoZ) has often dismissed reports of cases of enforced disappearances without thoroughly investigating the cases. As a result, perpetrators are not held accountable for their actions.
Zimbabwe has neither signed nor ratified the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances which puts an obligation upon state parties to take appropriate measures to criminalise enforced disappearance, investigate occurrences and prosecute the perpetrators.
This reluctance to ratify international instruments prohibiting enforced disappearances has only served to encourage a culture of impunity and injustice for victims and survivors of enforced disappearances and their families.
As the nation pursues national healing and reconciliation there must be accountability, truth-telling and justice for the victims, survivors of enforced disappearances and their families. There must also be deliberate efforts to put in place measures to guarantee non-recurrence.
The NTJWG, therefore, calls for the following:

<li>Ratification and domestication of the International Convention on Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances by the GoZ</li>
<li>The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission together with the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission must carry out a transparent and independent investigation of the circumstances surrounding unsolved cases enforced disappearances such as the case of Itai Dzamara who was forcibly disappeared in 2015.</li>
<li>The GoZ should criminalise enforced disappearances with a high penalty for the perpetrators.</li>
<li>The National Prosecuting Authority must prosecute all perpetrators of enforced disappearances.</li>
<li>The National Peace and Reconciliation Commission must provide platforms for victims, survivors of enforced disappearances and their families to discuss their experiences to bring closure and healing.</li>

While speaking to Magamba TV last week former cabinet minister Jonathan Moyo said he regrets the comments he made on Itai Dzamara’s disappearance in 2015. Moyo went on to say his comments were informed by the report he got from then Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi who is now the Vice President.
Moyo said:

During the same interview with Magamba TV, Professor <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/15/dzamara-disappeared-when-ed-was-acting-president-jnmoyo/">Jonathan Moyo</a> also said Itai Dzamara who disappeared in March 2015 disappeared when President Mnangagwa was acting President.
Moyo who is in exile since the 2017 coup that toppled his boss former President Mugabe from power is also facing r_ape allegations after Sipho Mazibuko claimed he forced himself on her in 2010 allegations he has denied.

Jonathan Moyo Regrets Comments He Made In 2015 On Itai Dzamara's Disappearance

Former ZANU PF official <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Shadreck_Mashayamombe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Shadreck Mashayamombe</a> has said that he was diagnosed with colon cancer. <a href="https://twitter.com/mashayamombe_s/status/1308146655250845697" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Posting on Twitter,</a> Mashayamombe advised young men and women to regularly go for cancer screening. He said:
<blockquote>SAD to tell you that I have been diagnosed with COLON CANCER. I advise all young men and women to go for routine Colo-ractal Cancer Screening. Pray for me as I battle against this Monster. I am starting a new Journey in my life.</blockquote>
This comes after the disease recently claimed the life of 34-year-old opposition MDC Alliance political activist <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Patson_Dzamara" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Patson Dzamara</a> who was a brother to missing journalist-cum political activist <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Itai_Dzamara" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Itai Dzamara.</a>
Colorectal cancer is the 3rd most common cancer globally, and the 6th most common in Africa. There has been a gradual temporal increase in the incidence of colorectal cancer in Zimbabwe over the past two decades
The exact cause of colorectal cancer is not known, but certain risk factors are strongly linked to the disease, including diet, tobacco smoking and heavy alcohol use.
Also, people with certain hereditary cancer syndromes or a family history of colorectal cancer have a high risk of developing the disease

The Zimbabwe Lawyers For Human Rights has released the following statement commemorating the United Nations (UN) International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. ZLHR urged the government to criminalise, investigate, prosecute all people involved in enforced disappearances.

ON the occasion of United Nations (UN) International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) urges government to criminalise enforced disappearances, investigate and prosecute all those responsible and take adequate measures to combat this heinous crime.
Commemorated on 30 August every year, United Nations International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is dedicated to raising awareness that enforced disappearances is a crime and to also honour victims and survivors.
The day also serves as a reminder for states to take measures such as preventing the occurrences of abductions and enforced disappearances, ensuring compensation to victims and making perpetrators accountable.
ZLHR reaffirms its solidarity for all victims and/or survivors of torture, and their families who may have been indirectly affected by the impact of this barbaric crime.
Sadly, in 2020, Zimbabwe is marking United Nations International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances at a time when the country is recording abductions of human rights defenders with the latest case being that of Tawanda Muchehiwa, a university student and a resident of Bulawayo.
Recently, the UN disclosed that 49 cases of abductions and torture were reported in Zimbabwe in 2019, without investigations leading to perpetrators being held to account. The UN human rights experts called on government to “urgently prosecute and punish the perpetrators of this outrageous crime, and to immediately enforce a policy of ‘zero tolerance’ for abductions and torture throughout the country” and “to bring those responsible to account.”
However, it is worrying that despite complaints being reported to law enforcement agents about incidences of abduction and enforced disappearances, government has sought to dismiss the reports as fake abductions. This attempt to trivialise the commission of a serious crime shows the audacity of Zimbabwean authorities to perpetuate the commission of heinous crimes at whatever cost.
Government has a responsibility to investigate, prosecute and hold perpetrators accountable for committing such heinous acts. Failure by government to hold perpetrators accountable, let alone acknowledge the outrageous practice of abductions and enforced disappearances places abductees outside the protection of the law and constitute a serious violation not only of domestic law but of international law too.
It is alarming that citizens continue to be subjected to such ill-treatment as abductions and enforced disappearances at a time when the world is focusing on containing the Coronavirus pandemic.
Sadly, in March 2017, government rejected some recommendations made by several United Nations member states calling for the ratification of the International Convention on Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearances. These recommendations made during the UN Human Rights Council-led Universal Periodic Review Mechanism would, if fully implemented eradicate the practice of enforced disappearances.
Families of missing persons such as Itai Dzamara, Patrick Nabanyama and Paul Chizuze have the right to know the truth about what happened to their loved ones and this is essential to relieve the suffering caused by the uncertainty concerning their whereabouts.”
In the notable absence of political will to reform laws and institutions fuelling abductions and enforced disappearances, ZLHR calls upon government to;
• Criminalise enforced disappearances, prosecute all cases of abduction and take adequate measures to prevent this inhuman and degrading treatment;
• Fully embrace the recommendations to ratify and domesticate the International Convention on Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearances.
• Ensure full accountability of all perpetrators and guarantee redress and rehabilitation to victims.
• Allow official visits of UN human rights experts with a view to assessing the human rights situation in the country and particularly to examine some questions relevant to enforced disappearances;</blockquote>

MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa has hit back at his critics who consider him indecisive and spineless for avoiding a violent confrontation with the ruling ZANU PF party.
Addressing a church service in Glen View Harare held for late MDC national executive member and human rights defender Patson Dzamara who died Wednesday, Chamisa said he will not allow people to die for him to become president. He said:
<blockquote>No Zimbabwean must die because of politics. I receive calls from some supporters saying President Chamisa please give us the signal, I will never allow a single a person to die on my journey to State House.
Yes, you may call it what, but I don’t believe that any human being is worth dying for politics. We must die so that we make change and development in our communities.</blockquote>
Chamisa called for tolerance and peaceful co-existence among Zimbabweans, even though they hold different political beliefs. He said:
<blockquote>We must not be separated by political parties. They come and go, but our humanity exists forever. There are good people in Zanu PF, very progressive, like Acie Lumumba here. He is a citizen; he has his ideas.
I may not agree with Lumumba, but I respect his ability to think in a different way.  That’s what builds the nation, that’s what keeps the nation going. They should be a competition of ideas.</blockquote>

"Dzamara Was Technically Eliminated By ZanuPF," - MDC Alliance Namibia

Human rights activist and MDC Alliance National Executive Committee member Patson Dzamara has died.
Dzamara, who was the younger brother of journalist and activist Itai Dzamara, who was abducted by suspected state security agents in 2015, died on Wednesday morning at the age of 34.
During the course of his activism, the late Dzamara used microblogging site Twitter to inspire his colleagues and compatriots alike. Here is a selection of his posts in the past 30 days:

Here Is What The Late Patson Dzamara Said In Past 30 Days

Human rights activist Patson Dzamara, who is a brother to missing journalist-cum political activist Itai Dzamara, has died. He was 34.
Itai was abducted by suspected state agents outside a Harare barbershop on March 9, 2015, and has not been seen since.
Dzamara passed away on Wednesday morning ahead of his scheduled cancer operation for colon cancer. Doctors had warned earlier this week that his health was deteriorating, and the operation could not be delayed further.
More than US$14 000 of the US$27 000 needed to cover the costs for Dzamara’s operation had been raised by well-wishers after his cancer diagnosis was made public.
Patson worked on MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa’s communications team during the 2018 presidential election campaign
Commenting on Dzamara’s death, Chamisa tweeted:
<blockquote>I’m so devastated… Just received bad news from the Dzamaras. The young Dr Patson Dzamara gone too soon. This has been a terrible 2020!</blockquote>
General Secretary of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Council_of_Churches" title="Zimbabwe Council of Churches">Zimbabwe Council of Churches</a> Reverend Kenneth Mtata said:
<blockquote>For a family to lose a member is sad. For a family to lose two sons is tragic. Praying for Patson Dzamara’s family. The nation has lost one Actively Engaged Citizen.</blockquote>
Businessman Nigel Chanakira thanked all the well-wishers who had contributed money towards the costs for Dzamara’s operation. He said:
<blockquote>It is with profound sadness to advise you that Dr Patson Dzamara has passed on this morning ahead of his scheduled cancer operation. Thanks to all those that had been contributing to the Fund where +US$14k had already been raised. I am personally devasted. MHDSRIP</blockquote>
Respected journalist Brezhnev Malaba paid tribute to the late Dzamara, who he considered a courageous fighter for the rights of the downtrodden. Malaba posted on Twitter:

Human Rights Activist Patson Dzamara Dies

Team Pachedu,  an opposition political activism online group has started mobilising funds to finance the medication of local activist Patson Dzamara who was recently diagnosed with cancer of the colon. We present Team Pachedu’s statement below.
<blockquote>Patson Dzamara a political activist and brother to missing Itai Dzamara was recently diagnosed with Colon Cancer. It is the type of cancer that begins in the large intestine (colon). The colon is the final part of the digestive tract.
Colon cancer typically affects older adults, though it can happen at any age. It usually begins as small, noncancerous (benign) clumps of cells called polyps that form on the inside of the colon. Over time some of these polyps can become colon cancers.
There is however good news as survival rate for Colon cancer is 90% if treatment is started early. Generally, the recovery rate is around 63% according to medical journals. With all of us coming together we can assist our brave soldier Patson Dzamara. The treatment is estimated to cost U$28,000.00 excluding other expenses. Every cent donated will be audited with all supporting documents provided. The vice president of the opposition MDC Alliance, Tendai Biti has said contrary to reports by the governing ZANU PF party that MDC was a terrorist organisation, there is evidence to suggest that ZANU PF was the actual terrorist party.

The wife of Itai Dzamara, Sheffra, has written an open letter to President Emmerson Mnangagwa pleading with him to resolve her husband’s abduction case.
The letter was written on Monday, March 9, the day which marked 5 years since Dzamara was abducted in 2015 by five unidentified gunmen. Sheffra’s letter reads in part:
<blockquote>President Mnangagwa, it’s now five years without knowing where my husband is or what happened to him. I am writing to appeal to your office to resolve the case of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Itai_Dzamara" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Itai Dzamara</a>. Tell us about his fate.
I do not want my children to grow up with hate and anger against the government because they do not have answers.
Today, I write again to share my pain with you, the pain of a wife caught between hope and grief. I still feel the pain every day because of not knowing the whereabouts of my husband. I write to tell you the pain of children growing up without a father, a role model, friend and support pillar for the family.</blockquote>
In October 2014, Dzamara hand-delivered a petition to Robert Mugabe, the then President of Zimbabwe asking him to step down.
A few months later, he was abducted in broad daylight by suspected State agents while at a barbershop in Harare’s Glenview suburb.

Dzamara's Wife, Sheffra Pleads With President Mnangagwa

The European Union has called upon the government of Zimbabwe to shed light on the whereabouts of journalist and pro-democracy activist Itai Dzamara.
Dzamara, a staunch critic of Robert Mugabe, was allegedly kidnapped by suspected state security personnel from a barbershop on 9 March 2015. Posting on Twitter, the European Union said:
<blockquote>Five years after his abduction, Itai <a class="link-complex" href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Dzamara" rel="hashtag noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Dzamara</a> remains missing. We call on Govt to shed light on his fate &amp; serve justice, and to tackle all human rights violations decisively, in line with <a class="link-complex" href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Zimbabwe" rel="hashtag noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Zimbabwe</a>‘s repeated commitment to human rights, freedoms &amp; national healing.</blockquote>
Dzamara’s wife, Sheffra, has appealed to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his government to help locate her husband.
Muleya Mwananyanda, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Southern Africa also said that it is cruel to withhold information concerning Dzamara’s whereabouts for five years. She said:
<blockquote>Imagine not being able to tell your children if their father is alive or dead. Someone knows where Itai Dzamara is, but they have chosen to subject his family to five long years of uncertainty.</blockquote>
Before his disappearance, Dzamara had been repeatedly harassed and beaten up by Zimbabwe’s security forces, in broad daylight, for carrying out Occupy Africa Unity Square campaign against Mugabe’s administration.

EU Calls Upon Zimbabwe To "Shed Light On Dzamara's Fate"

The family of pro-democracy activist, Itai Dzamara who disappeared without a trace in March 2015 has claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has avoided a meeting to discuss the disappearance.
Itai’s younger brother, Patson said that the family has written several letters to President Mnangagwa to no avail. He said:
<blockquote>We have tried to meet him soon after the November coup 2017 and his inauguration but to no avail.
Letters and requests to meet Mnangagwa have hit a brick wall. No letter has been responded to and no request to meet him has been accepted.
We hoped that the change of driving hands in Zanu PF would help us get closure somehow but unfortunately that has not been the case.
We have consistently stated that the morbid act of Itai’s abduction was masterminded and executed by the military intelligence.
The failure to resolve this matter by the so-called new dispensation led by ED only reveals that there is nothing new about it.
We have approached ED and other relevant ministries and they have literally stone-walled us out. It is sad and unfortunate.</blockquote>
Itai Dzamara was reportedly abducted by five armed men who drove an unmarked vehicle in Glen View. The men are suspected to be State security agents. He has not been seen since the abduction.

Itai Dzamara Family's Attempts To Meet ED Hit A Brick Wall

In a twitter debate between Professor Jonathan Moyo and Shingi Munyeza which dug on a number of issues, the latter might have implicated the former in Itai Dzamara’s disappearance.
Responding to Moyo’s tweet, Munyeza said:
<blockquote>Tell us about <a class="link-complex" href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23ItaiDzamara" rel="hashtag noopener" target="_blank">#ItaiDzamara</a> who you chickened telling us then for fear of victimization.</blockquote>
Dzamara, is reported to have been kidnapped  by five men as he left a barbershop near his home in Harare in 2015.

Munyeza Saying Prof Jonathan Moyo Knows What Happened To Itai Dzamara?

Temba Mliswa, Norton Member of Parliament has said President Emmerson Mnangagwa should set up Itai Dzamara Commission.
Mliswa said the issue of Dzamara was going nowhere hence the need to tackle it head-on
Mliswa said:
<blockquote>Human Rights violations must be dealt with. We need the issue of Itai Dzamara dealt with. Whether we like it or not, it’s a sticking issue. And there is no reason why the President cannot set up a commission of Inquiry to look into that the same way he did by setting up a commission of Inquiry to look into the August 1 situation.
Any human life lost is not good for Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
His sentiments reverberate those of Amnesty International which also urged a relaunch of thorough investigations into the disappearance of the journalist and social activist.

Mliswa Advices ED To Set Up Itai Dzamara Commission

Under-fire Norton Member of Parliament for Norton, Temba Mliswa (Independent) continued with his war of words with Chegutu West MP Dexter Nduna in Parliament on Wednesday. He said:
<blockquote>I rise on a point of privilege to register my displeasure and equally seek guidance from you, as chair, as to how far MPs can go in enjoying privileges and immunities of Parliament.
The reason why I am saying so is that I am under threat from Nduna after he confessed that he has killed many people and he equally has threatened to kill me.
I want to understand whether this is how MPs must act because my life is under threat. The remarks by Nduna that he killed people were made in a country under scrutiny for violence, especially allegations that there are ex-defence forces (members) who wore civilian clothes and were armed and killed people. Is it not because of the likes of Nduna?
The police and army have been accused of those killings and yet the answer lies with Nduna. We have also had a lot of people killed in this country, accusing State security agents and yet the answer is clear.
Itai Dzamara (journalist and activist) is missing and we now do not know whether he was killed by Nduna? Parliament is a sacred institution and we cannot have murderers in the House.</blockquote>

Mliswa Questions Nduna If He Had Something To Do With Itai Dzamara's Disappearance

The opposition MDC-T party has called on the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to stop taking advantage of the disappearance of pro-democracy activist Itai Dzamara to score cheap political points. Said MDC-T Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora,
<blockquote>
They are not serious, that is political posturing ahead of the elections because after three years and court interventions they all of a sudden wake up to appeal for public help on a matter that they know about.
Where the police and State security agents are involved, you see by the absence of arrests, three years down the line, when all tracks have gone cold there was not even a single arrest of a suspect, even a phoney one.</blockquote>
This comes after police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba, released a statement appealing for help in finding out what happened to the activist who was allegedly abducted in 2015.

MDC-T Calls For ZRP To Stop Using Itai Dzamara To Score Political Points Ahead of Elections

Author, motivational speaker and activist Patson Dzamara has responded to news that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is appealing to the public for information on his brother Itai Dzamara’s whereabouts. This is the first time the police have spoken publicly on Dzamara who has been missing for three years with Dzamara’s brother, Patson saying the police have not been updating the family on their investigations as ordered by the High Court.

Speaking on micro-blogging website Twitter, Patson said it is diabolic for Government to ask the public for assistance through ZRP when it is the one responsible for Itai’s disappearance. Said Patson:
<blockquote>It’s diabolic for this government to ask the citizens through ZRP to assist with information regarding the whereabouts of my brother Itai. Never have I minced my words that they are responsible for Itai’s abduction &amp; missing. They must just bring him back to us, dead or alive.</blockquote>
He added that the latest move by the Zanu-PF administration will not silence him. Patson said he is ready to die for his brother’s return. Said Patson:
<blockquote>Over 5000 Zimbabweans have been abducted on political grounds since 1980. The reason why Itai’s issue didn’t die down is because I (we) fought hard. If ZANU-PF thinks they can play politics using this matter they haven’t seen anything yet. I am prepared to fight even with my Iife</blockquote>

Patson Dzamara Responds To News Police Is Looking For Itai Dzamara

Pro-democracy activist Itai Dzamara disappeared on the 9th of March three years ago after he was abducted by as yet to be identified people. People gathered at Africa Unity Square today to mark the anniversary of his disappearance. They urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government to prove its commitment to doing things differently by revealing Itai’s fate. Others also took to Twitter, to express the same feelings.
