At least 61 migrants, including women and children, died in a devastating shipwreck off the coast of Libya, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya. The incident occurred on a dangerous migration route in the central Mediterranean, which remains one of the most dangerous in the world, <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/16/at-least-61-migrants-drown-after-shipwreck-off-libya-iom">Reuters</a> reported. Survivors reported that the boat, carrying approximately 86 people, had departed from Zwara, a city in Libya located about 110 kilometers (68 miles) from the capital city of Tripoli.
This year has seen multiple deadly incidents along this route. In June, a fishing boat packed with hundreds of migrants sank off Greece after leaving Tobruk, Libya. The journey, intended to reach Italy, resulted in 78 deaths, while the fate of 518 others remains unknown, as per an IOM report. Drowning has been identified as the primary cause of death on migration routes worldwide during the first half of 2023, with a staggering 2,200 recorded fatalities.
The IOM report further revealed that the central Mediterranean route was the deadliest, accounting for a total of 1,727 deaths and disappearances along its shores during the same period. Most of these tragic incidents occurred in Tunisia, followed by Libya. However, the actual numbers are believed to be higher, as the figures provided by the IOM likely underestimate the true scale of the crisis.
The situation in Italy has been particularly severe, with sea migrant arrivals nearly doubling in 2023 compared to the same period last year. Approximately 140,000 people have arrived on Italian shores, with the majority originating from Tunisia. The small Italian island of Lampedusa has been overwhelmed by the influx of migrants.
In response to these challenges, the European Union and Tunisia signed a “strategic partnership” agreement in July, aiming to combat human traffickers and strengthen sea borders. Additionally, Britain and Italy have announced plans to jointly finance the repatriation of migrants stranded in Tunisia, although the exact amount of funding has not been disclosed.

Over 60 Migrants Including Women And Children Die In A Shipwreck Off The Coast Of Libya

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) and International Organisation for Migration (IOM) last Friday said almost half of the migrant workers in the SADC region are women.
In a joint statement, ILO and IOM said the importance of creating gender-responsive migration policies will be discussed at a tripartite two-day conference scheduled for Victoria Falls starting tomorrow.
The conference will run under the theme “Labour Migration Governance in the SADC region,” according to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200004222/labour-migration-governance-development-in-southern-africa-put-under-spotlight">NewsDay.</a> Read the statement:

The governance of labour migration as an instrument for development in Southern Africa will be put under the spotlight at a high-level tripartite two-day dialogue.
President Emmerson will officially open the high-level conference which seeks to find ways to foster fair and effective labour migration governance and the protection of migrant workers in Southern Africa. 
It is designed to improve migration management in the Southern African and Indian Ocean region guided by, and contributing to the realisation of, the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda goal 8 on decent work and economic growth and goal 10 on reducing inequality and Objective 6 of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) to Facilitate fair and ethical recruitment and safeguard conditions that ensure decent work.
Since almost half of the migrant workers in the SADC region are women, the conference will spotlight the importance of labour migration policies to be gender-responsive and evidence-based.

According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA, year), 47% of migrants are female.

"Almost Half Of Migrant Workers In The SADC Region Are Women" - IOM

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM)’s Zimbabwe chief of mission Mario Lito Malanca has warned desperate job seekers against falling prey to human traffickers masquerading as employment agents.
In a statement Thursday, Malanca said cross-border recruitment exposed job seekers to human trafficking where victims are forced into prostitution and slavery once in foreign lands. Malanca said:

Cross-border recruitment is a vital part of facilitating international labour mobility. When implemented in a fair and transparent manner, it contributes to safe and orderly labour migration which benefits countries of origin and destination, employers and migrants. 
However, when international standards are not adhered to, the risks to migrant workers can be severe. Fraudulent and unethical behaviour by unscrupulous labour recruiters can lead to conditions of human trafficking and forced labour.
</blockquote>
He expressed gratitude to the government of Zimbabwe for its commitment in promoting good labour migration governance. 
Zimbabwe has recorded cases where victims have been trafficked, particularly to Middle East countries such as Kuwait and Oman.
Zimbabweans take the risk of going abroad as the local industry is collapsed and cannot sustain the demand. 
Malanca also hinted on the establishment of Migrant Resource Centres in Harare and Bulawayo to provide much-needed avenue for migrants to facilitate pre-departure orientation, raise awareness on human trafficking as well as facilitate referrals to service providers.
Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare minister Paul Mavima told NewsDay that the national labour migration policy launched last year in collaboration with IOM and the International Labour Organisation was aimed at protecting the rights of migrants.

IOM Warns Desperate Job Seekers againstA Falling Prey To Human Traffickers

The Home Affairs Ministry has said Zimbabwe is experiencing increasing challenges of irregular migration flows mainly from the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region.
Home Affairs secretary Aaron Nhepera, told delegates at the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) conference in Victoria Falls on Tuesday that most of the migrants and asylum seekers were running away from conflict and instability in their countries. He said:

Over the past two decades, however, the country has largely become a source country for both regular and irregular migrants to countries in the region such as South Africa, Botswana and Namibia and to countries further afield such as the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand.
Zimbabwe continues to face increasing challenges of irregular migration flows involving particularly asylum seekers, unaccompanied minors and separated migrant children from the horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region who transit through Zimbabwe, quite often, to South Africa or who seek asylum in Zimbabwe due to conflicts and instability in their home countries.
As a result, the government recognises the importance of a coherent policy response to address the challenges related to these mixed migration flows.

Nhepera also said the government had developed a National Diaspora Policy and a National Labour Migration Policy to address migration challenges.
Nhepera said that once launched, the policy would require technical and financial support from development partners like the IOM and United Nations during implementation.

Zimbabwe Continues To Face Increasing Challenges Of Irregular Migration Flows

A total of 259 699 Zimbabweans have so far been deported or lost their jobs due to the coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic.
This was revealed by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in a statement that was issued Sunday. IOM spokesperson Fadzayi Nyamande Pangeti said:
<blockquote>_In May, there were approximately 22 764 observed entries at the key points of entry._
_IOM supported the convening of a migration cross-border coordination meeting between Zimbabwean and Zambian local and national border management stakeholders._
_IOM distributed gazebos, tables and chairs, sanitisers, liquid handwashing soap, and thermometers in Beitbridge and handed over a 5 000-litre water tank, which was installed at Mashavira Bulk Market._</blockquote>
IOM further reported that approximately 22 764 observed entries were recorded in May and most of them were destined for Beitbridge (31%), Harare (23%), Hurungwe (21%), Chipinge (7%) and Masvingo (6%).
Millions of Zimbabweans live in the diaspora after fleeing the biting economy in the Southern African country.
Their deportation translates to deterioration in living standards for many families as the ones being deported are the breadwinners in their families.
The deportations and loss of employment also mean a great loss to Zimbabwe as the diaspora community’s remittances contributed much to the national revenue.
The governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), Dr John Mangudya, this year said International Diaspora or Diaspora remittances earned US$1 002.10 billion for the year 2020.
That is a huge figure considering that Export Proceeds earned US$3 696.30 billion in the period under review.
