<p>Zimbabwean national, Joni Musabayana, has been appointed as the new director of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean.</p>
<p>According to a report by <a href="https://www.royalgazette.com/local-business/business/article/20231015/zimbabwean-to-head-caribbean-ilo-office/"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Royal Gazette</span></a>, Musabayana will lead the ILO’s efforts in promoting social justice, decent work and inclusive economic growth out of an office based in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.</p>
<p>He has a distinguished career spanning over 31 years and has extensive experience and expertise in labour, social development and international relations. The ILO department said:</p>

<p>His dedication to fostering tripartite social dialogue and cooperation (among) governments, employers and workers has been instrumental in reducing decent work deficits and driving positive change in the labour landscape.</p>
<p>As director of the ILO Caribbean Office, Mr Musabayana will provide strategic direction to advance the ILO’s technical guidance and cooperation through Decent Work Country Programmes and other activities supported through the wider United Nations system serving in the region.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>In his remarks, Musabayana pledged to work with all pertinent partners in the Caribbean region to achieve social justice and decent work for all. He said:</p>

<p>This region is home to vibrant cultures and key sectors set against the backdrop of complex economic, social and environmental vulnerabilities.</p>
<p>I am eager to work collaboratively with our tripartite constituents and other partners to identify and mobilise opportunities that can achieve social justice and decent work for all.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>His responsibilities will include overseeing the implementation of initiatives tailored to the needs of the Caribbean that will address persistent and emerging challenges in the world of work.</p>
<p>Before the latest appointment, Musabayana served as director of the ILO Pretoria Decent Work Team, leading technical support for 18 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa.</p>
<p>He was also the director for the country office politically and administratively covering Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and South Africa.</p>
<p>Musabayana has a Doctorate in Business Leadership and a Master of Business Administration, as well as diplomas in training management and computer programming.</p>
<p>Prior to joining the International Labour Organisation, he worked for the Zimbabwe Ministry of Higher Education and the Employers’ Confederation of Zimbabwe.</p>

Zimbabwean To Head Caribbean International Labour Organisation Office

<p>The United States of America’s secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has condemned the government of Zimbabwe for violating workers rights through harassment of trade union leaders.</p>
<p>In a press statement on the Centenary of the founding of the International Labor Organization (ILO), Pompeo castigated Zimbabwe alongside Iran, China, and Venezuela. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>The ILO has done important work in Zimbabwe, where security forces have committed acts of violence and harassment against trade union leaders. We remain concerned that government interference with trade union activity remains common in Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>As the ILO enters its second century pursuing objectives critical to economic prosperity and security around the world, the United States recommits itself to advancing the rights of workers globally.</p></blockquote>
<p>The Zimbabwean government has allegedly been vicious when dealing with trade union leaders. ZCTU president Peter Mutasa and ARTUZ boss Obert Masaraure were arrested and are face treason charges related to protests.</p>

U.S. Govt Condemns Zimbabwe For Harassing Trade Union Leaders

<p>The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has rejected a government-sponsored draft of the Labour Act saying the government acted without consultation. The government is seeking reform the Labour Act through the Tripartite Negotiating Forum (TNF). The ZCTU is one of the parties of the TNF. The TNF consists of the government, employers and employees.</p>
<p>ZCTU president, Peter Mutasa said the union rejected the State sponsored draft because the government had not adequately consulted the other parties. Said Mutasa:</p>
<blockquote><p>T<em>he rights that we won as workers in 1980 are now under threat. We are better off defending what we have. From our point of view, the first issue is that of processes. Tripartism and social dialogue means business, labour and government must all participate in key decisions</em></p>
<p><em>We agreed on the 13 principles, but … government and the ILO’s Harare office went on to appoint a consultant without our input. Our issue is not about the product it is about how the product came into being</em></p></blockquote>

ZCTU rejects government's efforts to reform the Labour Act

<div>The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has revealed that the country’s workplaces remain unsafe for female employees who are stalked by vices such as sexual harassment, job insecurity and lack of empowerment.</div>
<div></div>
<div>In a study titled: “Future of Women at Work Initiative,” ILO established that women are victims of unpaid work, low wage jobs and the ills associated with informal economies such as lack of job security, poor social security and lack of empowerment.</div>
<div></div>
<div>According to the study, 30 percent of the country’s employees in the labour force are women with five percent in senior management positions and three percent of Zimbabwean boards being chaired by women.</div>
