Zimbabwe faces significant challenges in meeting the social and economic rights of its citizens, as evidenced by various indicators such as GNP per capita, indices of social development, labour productivity, and the Social Progress Index.
As of 2024, Zimbabwe’s GNP per capita remains low compared to regional averages, indicating limited economic resources available for individual citizens.
The Social Development Index highlights deficiencies in health care, education, and living standards, which are critical components of social rights. 
Article 22 of the UDHR states, “Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international cooperation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.”
Article 22 of the Banjul Charter asserts that “All peoples shall have the right to their economic, social and cultural development with due regard to their freedom and identity and in equal enjoyment of the common heritage of mankind.”
Labor productivity has been hindered by economic instability and a lack of investment in infrastructure and human capital, further exacerbating poverty levels.
Additionally, the Social Progress Index reflects poor performance in areas such as personal rights and freedoms, access to basic knowledge, and environmental sustainability.
Collectively, these metrics suggest that Zimbabwe is struggling to fulfil its obligations to ensure adequate social and economic rights for its population.
The concept of social and economic well-being as a human right is grounded in the principles of progressive realization, which emphasizes that states have an obligation to progressively enhance the living conditions of their citizens.
This involves ensuring that social value is embedded within policies and practices, thereby fostering an environment where individuals can thrive economically and socially.
Adaptive social protection systems play a crucial role in this framework by providing safety nets that respond to the vulnerabilities faced by populations, particularly in times of crisis or change. 
These systems not only aim to alleviate poverty but also promote resilience and empowerment, reinforcing the idea that access to basic needs such as food, healthcare, education, and housing is fundamental to human dignity.
Thus, recognizing social and economic wellbeing as a human right underscores the responsibility of governments and societies to create inclusive frameworks that support all individuals in achieving their full potential.
In order to ensure social and economic well-being as a human right in Zimbabwe, the government, business sector entities, international agencies, and civil society organizations must all take a multipronged approach.
First and foremost, the government ought to give top priority to enacting laws that support fair access to necessities like housing, healthcare, and education.
This can be accomplished by giving these sectors larger budgetary allocations and making sure that resources are allocated equitably among all communities and regions.
It is crucial to promote economic opportunities by creating jobs. By lowering administrative barriers and offering assistance to small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), the government should foster an atmosphere that encourages entrepreneurship.
International organizations can also help by offering financial support and technical assistance for development initiatives meant to boost productivity and infrastructure.
Furthermore, in order to fortify legislative frameworks that safeguard human rights, parties must cooperate. This involves ensuring that international treaties pertaining to social and economic rights are incorporated into national law and ratifying them.
Human rights education initiatives can enable citizens to effectively demand their rights. It is therefore imperative for every citizen to understand that they have the right to social and economic well-being and the government should play a pivotal role in ensuring that those rights are not thwarted by policies and frameworks which do not uphold the very foundations of human rights.

Zimbabwe is struggling to give its people good social and economic rights. This means things like health care, education, and job opportunities. The government, businesses, and international groups need to work together to make things better. They should make laws that help everyone have access to basic needs. They also need to create jobs and improve infrastructure. People need to be educated about their rights so they can demand them. Everyone deserves a good life, and it's the government's job to make sure that happens.

Social And Economic Wellbeing: A Human Right

In an article published by the Daily Maverick, Thandekile Moyo traces Zimbabwe’s history of turmoil since independence from Great Britan in 1980.
From the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gukurahundi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Gukurahundi</a> genocide of the 1980s, up to the shooting to death of over 17 protestors in January this year, Zimbabwe is a country where the use of violence against unarmed civilians is justified by the rulers.
With the fall from power of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Robert Mugabe</a> in November 2017, it was thought that the ‘New Dispensation’ would guide Zimbabwe to a bright future. The new regime has, however, proved to be a continuation of the old. Writes Moyo:

'They Won't Reform Themselves Out Of Power & Straight To Prison' - OPINION

<blockquote>Today: 10 December 2019 the world commemorates the International Human Rights Day. The International Human Rights Day marks the 61st anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (the Declaration) in 1948.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/The_Zimbabwe_Human_Rights_NGO_Forum" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum)</a> joins the world in commemorating this day. The Forum recognises this ground-breaking Declaration in the history of human rights globally.
Zimbabwe has embraced the Declaration by incorporating its provisions in its <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Constitution_of_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Constitution</a>, expounded under the Bill of Rights.
The 2019 commemorations are being held under the global theme, Youth Standing Up for Human Rights.
The United Nations in coming up with this theme aims to celebrate facilitating sustainable development, amplify their voices, and engage a broad range of global audiences in the promotion and protection of rights.
It is within that context that the Forum takes time to reflect on the state of human rights in Zimbabwe in 2019 and how it has advanced the tenets of the Declaration as it commemorates this day.
The Forum laments that we are commemorating the coming into effect of this milestone document that proclaims the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being, against a background of a deteriorating political, economic and social environment in Zimbabwe.
The Forum notes with concern the economic crisis that has resulted in the erosion of disposable income and unemployment resulting in widespread poverty primarily because of poor governance, pervasive corruption and mismanagement of funds.
This has manifested in; a crippling industrial action by healthcare personnel in state medical facilities, currently ongoing across the country; continuous surging of prices of foodstuffs; shortages of clean water; and the right to education has also been severely affected.
The Forum is particularly concerned by the lack of urgency on the part of the government to resolve the economic crisis, contrary to the spirit of the Declaration we are commemorating today.
It is regrettable that while all this has been happening, the government instead has increased suppression of rights and freedoms.
In particular, the freedom of expression, assembly, association and the freedom to demonstrate and petitions are severely curtailed.
During the year the Forum recorded an increase in levels of violence and brutality especially against known and or perceived protestors and human rights, defenders.
The UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of peaceful Assembly and Association, in his preliminary findings following his mission to Zimbabwe in September, notes that:
“The restrictions ….range from very subtle forms of interference to threats issued by public authorities to suppress protests and dissent, to the use of the judicial system to impose unlawful charges…. the use of disproportionate and excessive force resulting in massive violations against protestors. I have also heard of numerous cases of arbitrary detentions, cases of injury, torture and even the loss of innocent lives.”
The Forum notes with concern the growing impunity and disregard for the rule of law by government institutions whose mandate is to serve and protect the citizens of Zimbabwe.
In particular that it has been almost a year since the release of the findings from the Commission of Inquiry into the August 1 post-election shootings and the recommendations which include prosecution of the police and military officers responsible for the shootings are yet to be implemented.
Instead, there has been an escalation in the brutality by the same security institutions on protestors and innocent civilians.
In light of this depressing state of affairs, we also take this opportunity to call for tolerance and accelerate this Campaign running under the theme Tolerance Matters as we commemorate this day.
The Tolerance Matters Campaign seeks to promote a culture of respect for one another and appreciation of diversity and inclusion.
To foster a lasting culture of human rights espoused in constitutionalism, the starting point is tolerance within the citizenry and appreciation that rights come with responsibilities.
We believe a tolerant society is a foundational basis for the full enjoyment of the rights established by the Declaration and guaranteed by the Constitution of Zimbabwe.
As we commemorate the International Human Rights Day, the Forum calls upon the government to embrace the tenets and spirit of the Declaration and fully respect, protect and fulfil all human rights of all its citizens and in particular to:</blockquote>

<blockquote>To take urgent measures to resolve the ongoing socio-economic challenges that have eroded the dignity of the people.</blockquote>
</li>
<li>
<blockquote>To take urgent and progressive measures to address the ongoing crisis in service delivery and in particular to stop victimising and firing medical doctors for exercising their labour rights and urgently resolve the concerns of medical doctors in order to resuscitate the failing health delivery system.</blockquote>

Human Rights NGO Forum Statement On International Human Rights Day {Full Text}

<blockquote>ZLHR STATEMENT ON INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY
ON the occasion of the United Nations International Human Rights Day, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Lawyers_for_Human_Rights" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)</a> calls upon the government to recognise and value the contribution of youths in the fight for the respect of fundamental human rights. The 2019 theme for International Human Rights Day is “Youth standing up for human rights”
The theme calls on everyone to empower youths for a better future. This can only be realised when there is protection from human rights violations, economic growth and an enabling environment.
Across the globe, youths are breaking barriers posed by discrimination, stereotypes, exclusion and therefore proving that they can excel, when there is an enabling environment.
ZLHR is heartened that youths are standing up, taking part and playing key roles in decision-making. They are increasingly contributing to the fight against climate change, taking part in activities to promote respect for human rights among other interventions.
Young people, who have always been major drivers of political, economic and social transformation are playing a frontline role in grassroots mobilisation for positive change and bring fresh ideas and solutions for a better world.
In many countries, including Zimbabwe, commitments made to youths remain unfulfilled and there remains a litany of harmful practices that hold them back from reaching their full potential.
In today’s world, young people are often marginalised and grapple with difficulties in accessing and enjoying their fundamental rights and freedoms.
Girls and boys continue to drop out of school as their parents face economic hardships. Obtaining identity documents and birth registration cards continue to be a challenge.
The practise of child marriages is still rife. The dire humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe arising from natural disasters, a failing economy, poor service delivery including shortages of water and other basic necessities is compromising the realisation of youths’ fundamental rights and freedoms.
For youths to effectively stand up for human rights, ZLHR, therefore, calls upon the government to;
➢Take every step to fulfil its human rights obligations and create a conducive environment that allows youths to pursue their dreams and therefore realise their full potential;
➢Take measures including affirmative action programmes to ensure that youths have access to appropriate education and training and have opportunities to associate and be represented and participate in political, social, economic and other spheres of life.
➢Adopt policies and measures, review and immediately align laws with the Constitution and incorporate the best interests of youths particularly the girl child.
➢To afford youths opportunities for employment and other avenues to economic empowerment and implement mechanisms that seek to protect youths from abuse, exploitation and any form of discrimination, inequality and ill-treatment.

Human Rights Lawyers' Statement On International Human Rights Day {Full Text}

<blockquote>Zimbabwe’s Human Rights under Siege.
The MDC joins the family of nations in celebrating the International Human Rights Day albeit in the face of gross rights abuses at the hands of an illegitimate regime.
The regime does not only pays lip service to the laudable principles enunciated in our Constitution and International Human Rights Instruments but is, in fact, the biggest culprit in the abuse fundamental human rights which it has a duty and obligation to promote and protect.
It is unfortunate that after the excesses of the racist regime, the people of Zimbabwe did not get any respite from the Zanu PF regime after independence as it perpetuated the abuses and it is regrettable that in spite of the pretence and misrepresentation that we are in a new dispensation we are actually worse off as previously we had a police state and now the military has been roped in to maintain the regime’s grip on power.
As a Party, we are perplexed by the failure to implement the provisions of Section 210 which entails the enactment of an Act to establish an independent complaints mechanism and it has taken more than six years to come up with such simple legislation.
It simply shows the lack of political will and commitment and this manifests itself in the way that police and soldiers have been used as instruments similar to the Nazi and apartheid regimes.
Freedom to demonstrate and present petitions is enshrined Section 59 of our Constitution and it is, in fact, one of the reasons that our gallant fighters went to war for and some paid the ultimate price.
To make matters worse and contrary to the pontification that we are on a reform trajectory the regime has passed into law the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (MOPA) which is worse than the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Public_Order_and_Security_Act" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Public Order and Security Act (POSA)</a>.
The MDC further note the abuse of policing state agents that have been turned into agents of terror. The police force has not been transformed into service and instead of implementing the provisions of the law, they continue to muzzle the people’s rights.
What is even more disturbing is the fact that instead of promoting the observance of human rights it is the government which is responsible for the maiming and brutalization of the ordinary citizens as well as political opponents such as the Movement for Democratic Change.
We call upon the Zanu PF regime to reflect on its conduct on this important day and begin the journey to a paradigm shift whereby the Rights of the people are not only respected but Zimbabweans begin to have comfort in the law enforcement agencies which have been abused for more than half a century by successive regimes.
The MDC has always been very clear that appropriate legislation to complete the alignment process is a sine qua non for the full realisation of the fundamental rights enshrined in Chapter 4 of the Constitution and in this regard we are working on an alternative Legislative Agenda. Under an MDC government, all international human rights instruments and the provisions of our constitution would not only be fully implemented but complemented by appropriate laws and practices.
The MDC continues to fight for a free, democratic space that is anchored on respect for human rights for all.

Observed each year on 10 December, International Human Rights Day is set aside to reflect on the meaning, importance and need for human rights internationally.
As the global community celebrates the 70th anniversary year of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), ZLHR wishes to encourage all stakeholders in Zimbabwe to collectively work towards realising all the fundamental rights and freedoms enshrined in the UDHR and other United Nations human rights instruments.
ZLHR remains saddened that 37 years after Zimbabwe attained its independence, violations of fundamental rights and freedoms enshrined in the UDHR as well as other United Nations human rights instruments continue unabated.
On a progressive note, the 2013 Constitution of Zimbabwe enshrines some of these rights and freedoms. However, a lot of work has to be done collectively by state and non-state actors to fully realise these rights.
Further, ZLHR hereby reminds all state and non-state actors that constitutionalism is vital for the countries’ people to enjoy the fruits of the human rights provisions conceptualised 70 years ago that have evolved over the years.
As the country heads towards the 2018 harmonised general elections, ZLHR encourages responsible state actors to #STANDUP4HUMANRIGHTS by;
1. Returning the country to a full constitutional order where all provisions of the Constitution are respected, observed and fully implemented; 
2. Expedite the alignment of laws to the Constitution, and ensure full implementation thereof; 
3. Work towards reforming key rule of law institutions that are responsible for furthering the enjoyment of human rights enshrined in the UDHR, key human rights instruments that Zimbabwe is state party to as well as the Zimbabwe Constitution; 
4. Immediately ratify and fully implement the following human rights instruments that complement the UDHR that include but not limited to; 
• The African Charter on Democracy Governance and Elections; 
• The United Nations Convention for the Protection of all Persons against Enforced Disappearances  
• The United Nations Convention Against Torture, other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.</blockquote>
