President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed satisfaction in witnessing Zimbabwean opposition politicians engage in conflict, believing that such infighting weakens their ability to challenge ZANU PF.
Referring to Mnangagwa’s exclusive interview with “The Third Eye” magazine, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/president-speaks-on-opposition-fights-i-laugh-and-enjoy-their-internal-squabbles/">The Herald</a> quoted him as relishing the spectacle of opposition clashes. He believes this internal strife ensures a weakened opponent incapable of challenging ZANU PF. Said Mnangagwa:

Look, I am the head of a political party. If my opponents are fighting, I laugh and enjoy. Why would I bother to say I want a very strong opposition that can challenge me?
It’s good to have an opposition. Our laws allow opposition, that is why opposition parties are here. They have their internal conflicts and internal difficulties. It’s legitimate to them.
They must resolve their problems. They cannot expect ZANU PF to go and intervene and say, “Look, you are becoming weaker and weaker, and this is not good for us.” NO! We will not do that.

The country’s main opposition party, CCC, CCC has since splintered into four notable factions that now seek to access funds disbursed under the Political Parties (Finance) Act.
 CCC faced a significant setback soon after the August 2023 general elections when State institutions, including Parliament and the Judiciary, acknowledged the assertions made by an unidentified party activist named Sengezo Tshabangu.
According to Tshabangu, he held the position of interim secretary general and wielded the authority to dismiss elected representatives and appoint his own choices.
Subsequently, Tshabangu initiated the removal of numerous CCC MPs and Councillors, resulting in ZANU PF securing a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly.
Meanwhile, opposition activists, who are loyal to Tshabangu (including Tshabangu himself), assumed positions in the Senate.
CCC leader Nelson Chamisa abandoned the party in January this year, alleging that it had been infiltrated by ZANU PF.
However, Mnangagwa scoffed at infiltration claims, saying the party “should remove those who have infiltrated them (laughs). That is the only solution. Just remove them.”

Mnangagwa "Enjoyed" Witnessing Tshabangu Undermine CCC

CCC supporters have allegedly infiltrated ZANU PF constituency WhatsApp groups to campaign for their leader Nelson Chamisa, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010384/ccc-hijacks-zanu-pf-campaign-platforms">NewsDay</a>.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa reportedly created scores of constituency-based WhatsApp groups after secretly obtaining voters’ mobile numbers and would post his campaign messages in the groups to lure voters.
But CCC members reportedly joined the same WhatsApp groups which were open to all registered voters and started campaigning for Chamisa and trolling ZANU PF.
The description of one of the ZANU PF WhatsApp groups was later changed to Chamisa Chete Chete (Chamisa only).
ZANU PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa accused CCC supporters of cyber-bullying, saying this will however not affect voting patterns. He was quoted by NewsDay as saying:

We are being trolled. They are infiltrating our software. The WhatsApp groups were created by some ZANU PF members who wanted to interact with the people on behalf of the President. We have the support of people. Cyber war games against ZANU PF won’t work.
It will not affect the outcome of the poll. There are hardly a million on social media. The majority of Zimbabweans don’t have smartphones, especially in rural areas so social media won’t be effective to remove ZANU PF. Social media is not our main battlefront. It is just a sideshow.

CCC CCC youth spokesperson Stephen “Sarkozy” Chuma told NewsDay that Mutsvangwa’s outbursts show that CCC has become the dominant party. Chuma said:

It shows the dominance of our party. The social, political and economic crisis that is bedevilling the country has no political boundaries.
It is affecting everyone regardless of political affiliation. That is why everyone has become CCC. In the end, change is inevitable.

Mnangagwa has been sending unsolicited constituency-based campaign SMS messages to voters and asking them to join his WhatsApp groups.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) have been accused of leaking details of registered voters to ZANU PF.
ZEC officials categorially denied giving ZANU PF citizens personal data, including phone numbers.

ZANU PF Accuses CCC Of Infiltration

Self-exiled former ZANU PF Politburo member and cabinet minister Jonathan Moyo denied claims by Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters that he had infiltrated the opposition party ahead of general elections scheduled for 2023.
Speaking in an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200003830/jonathan-moyo-why-we-apologised-to-zanu-pf">The Standard</a>, Moyo said he, and another self-exiled former senior ZANU PF official, Patrick Zhuwao, never sought to join the Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance or its successor, CCC.
Moyo claimed that he supported Chamisa “around the clock from 2018 to 2021” but his efforts were not appreciated and he came to the conclusion that the opposition leader and his supporters “are unhelpable and unsupportable”. Said Moyo:

Well, if that is what CCC chaps think, then it means they are functionally illiterate and do not know what infiltration means.
The infiltrators are already deep in CCC, and Nelson Chamisa himself said as much only a few days ago.
The fact is that at no time did I or Cde Zhuwao seek membership in either MDC-A or CCC, never ever; not even for a second or a minute.
So how can I seek to infiltrate something that I never sought to be part of?
The claim of Nelson Chamisa’s supporters is political madness on steroids.
If anyone wants to know anything of some political value about this, it is a matter of the public record that Zhuwao, Edmund Kudzayi and I worked with and supported Nelson Chamisa publicly and openly around the clock in his 2018 presidential election campaign.
There was no, and there will never be, a sustainable suggestion that we infiltrated Chamisa or his party in 2018.
We were actually his campaign’s reliable backbone when Tsvangirai’s MDC base deserted Chamisa; including many who are now jumping up and down, pretending to support him while gratuitously demonising us in the hope of getting retweets and likes on Twitter to grow their own personal accounts.
As far as the 2023 election campaign is concerned, I told Chamisa in writing in November 2021 that I will not campaign for him in 2023 or do anything like what I did for him in 2018; Chamisa has that information which I gave him and my reasons in November 2021. I have also said this on my Twitter handle many times before.
So, there could not have been any question of either Zhuwao or me infiltrating Nelson Chamisa or his CCC or whatever party he is going to contest in the 2023 elections; because I told him directly in November that I was not going to support him in 2023.
And here is my point about this; based on working closely with Nelson Chamisa and supporting him around the clock from 2018 to 2021, I reached a truly clear conclusion that he and his noisy supporters are unhelpable and unsupportable.
That is the bottom line, everything else is irrelevant.

Asked if Zimbabwe is prepared to hold free, fair and credible elections in 2023, Moyo responded:

No, I don’t think any rational or fair-minded person would say that the necessary political, institutional and legal imperatives to hold free, fair and credible elections are now in place for the 2023 harmonised general election due within the next nine months.
The delimitation exercise is yet to be finalised and it is surrounded by lots of questions and concerns.
There are still too many controversies about the availability, accessibility, reliability and credibility of the voters’ roll – this is a major concern because an election is a voters’ roll – and the fact that ZEC is doing precious little to address these and other related issues legally, transparently, efficiently and effectively; dents the country’s readiness to hold free, fair and credible elections.

Jonathan Moyo Says CCC Has Been Infiltrated, Chamisa Is Unhelpable And Unsupportable

Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) Change Champion in Chief Nelson Chamisa claims there is a push by ZANU PF to infiltrate the opposition party using operatives who were being trained for that sole purpose.
CCC was formed in January this year by the majority of former MDC members but is yet to come up with structures or convene an elective congress. Said Chamisa:
<blockquote>
This time we will do things differently. Citizens at the centre.
They are spending millions of taxpayers’ money to infiltrate the citizens’ movement by recruiting and training operatives meant to destabilise. We are ahead of them.
</blockquote>
Chamisa said only bona fide members will know where the party is headed without risking infiltration.
There have been previous attempts by the State to control the opposition, including the use of the military to take over the party’s headquarters, Morgan Tsvangirai House (formerly Harvest House).
CCC was also blocked from holding campaign rallies several times by State agents in the run-up to the 26 March by-elections.
