ZAPU leader Sibangilizwe Nkomo says ZANU PF has fallen short of fulfilling the pledge of a liberated Zimbabwe, even four decades after independence, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200025768/zanu-pf-stole-independence-opposition">reported NewsDay</a>.
Nkomo, who is the son of the late former Vice President Joshua Nkomo, said ZANU PF has betrayed the nation’s gallant sons and daughters who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom. Said Nkomo:

Independence is painful because it has no freedom. Just a few days ago, we saw people being arrested for booing first lady Auxillia Mnangagwa.
Just basic freedom for one to laugh at a leader, you have to be arrested! I do not believe that this is what they fought for.
</blockquote>
The nine villagers referred to by Nkomo were detained and later charged with disorderly conduct after they allegedly booed the First Lady.
Mnangagwa was addressing villagers at Watsomba Business Centre, Manicaland, donating foodstuffs and other goodies when the alleged incident occurred.
The charges against the nine women were, however, withdrawn on the instruction of the First Lady.
Nkomo also said the people who were affected by Gukurahundi would not know true independence until the matter was resolved. He said:

Our independence will not be complete unless the issue of Gukurahundi is addressed.
Gukurahundi is a painful wound in Zimbabwe. It brings bad omen and conflict among Zimbabweans. If it is not resolved the nation will not progress. It affects the whole country and not Matabeleland only.
This is because the acts of Gukurahundi are still there and continuing.

Nkomo claimed that only the ZANU PF elite is enjoying the country’s wealth while the majority wallow in abject poverty. He said:

The other sad thing is that the liberation war was waged for the majority of blacks to own land and wealth, but our wealth is being looted out of the country to foreign lands.
The gap between the rich and the poor is ever widening and this is painful. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.
</blockquote>
However, ZANU PF information director, Farai Marapira, asserted that independence was meant for all Zimbabweans. Said Marapira:

This importance reverberates and resonates across the length and breadth of Zimbabwe. The younger generation needs to be more curious about their history as the President said, a tree cannot grow branches without roots.
Independence since 1980 has always been an important occasion for the ZANU PF government. We are all independent, we achieved political independence in 1980 and are in the process of defining and attaining our total economic independence.

Zimbabwe today, 18 April, marks 44 years of independence from British colonial rule. The main celebrations will be held in Murambinda, Manicaland Province.

ZANU PF "Stole" Zimbabwe's Independence - ZAPU

The Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, emphasised that the current state of independence, democracy, freedom, peace, and tranquillity in Zimbabwe should not be taken for granted. She highlighted the significant sacrifices and bloodshed that led to these achievements.
In her remarks to commemorate Heroes Day, Senator Mutsvangwa who is a veteran of the liberation struggle, recounted the tragic events of the Nyadzonya Massacre on August 9, 1976. She criticised Western imperialists for hypocritically claiming to champion democracy and human rights while being complicit in such atrocious acts.
Furthermore, Senator Mutsvangwa urged the nation, particularly the youth, to protect the country’s sovereignty and the gains made during the liberation struggle.
She expressed her concern that the experiences of liberation struggle veterans are often overlooked, with their valuable stories being lost.
Remembering her personal losses during the war, including the tragic death of her friend Veronica Chigumira and witnessing the fate of her schoolmate Joe Gwabuya, who was swept away by the Pungwe river while fleeing from Rhodesian Forces, Senator Mutsvangwa emphasized the unbreakable bond between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, forged through blood and sacrifice.
Many young Zimbabweans appear to take independence for granted due to several factors. These include a lack of firsthand experience with the struggles of the liberation war, inadequate historical education, and pressing socioeconomic challenges. Additionally, political disillusionment has contributed to a diminished appreciation for independence as they feel that the challenges faced by their grandparents during the colonial era are still being experienced today.
Government critics claim the black government has become the new oppressor, violating the liberation war values of equality, justice, freedom of expression, inclusivity, and socioeconomic empowerment. They argue that the government’s actions contradict the principles it fought for, betraying the aspirations of the liberation struggle.

Minister Mutsvangwa Says Zimbabwe's Independence, Democracy, And Peace Shouldn't Be Taken For Granted

<h2>Full statement by Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere to mark Zimbabwe’s 43rd Independence Anniversary on 18 April 2023.</h2>

Today, Zimbabwe celebrates 43 years of independence. We join the nation in honouring this important day as we look to the sacrifice made by those who fought on our behalf for the constitutional entitlement of one man, one vote.
The liberation struggle was anchored on the fight for free, fair and credible elections.
We seek to complete the mission this year to ensure we win Zimbabwe for change by winning the election and taking power.
As a citizens’ movement, the Citizens’ Coalition for Change acknowledges the effort and sacrifices of the soldiers, war veterans, war collaborators and citizens, living and departed, who contributed to attaining the liberation of our nation from colonial rule.
We acknowledge and respect all national processes that relate to the history and legacy of Zimbabwe as this is the collective definition of our identity as a people.
Independence Day belongs to all Zimbabwean citizens. It is a national event which, in a functional nation, ought to be inclusive, non-partisan and be a moment of pride and celebration for all members of our society.
When our forebears took up arms, they were guided by liberation ideals including universal adult suffrage, sovereignty of the people and their will, as well as shared prosperity for the masses.
For this reason, the movement participates in these platforms, standing on the belief that these are national events, not partisan processes. We do so for our country and for the collective being of the people.
As election day beckons, we are mindful that the 43-year-old bad governance crisis has rendered the Liberation promise empty. Our aspirations for Zimbabwe are yet to be realized.
The latest corruption expose betrays a sad pattern of a rich nation being poorly managed and looted by political elites at the expense of the citizens.
Like every other corruption scandal that has preceded it over the last 43 years, it is an indictment of the liberation dream and the promise of independence.
This is not the Zimbabwe that the citizens had hoped for. We urge every citizen to ensure that they perform their civic duty by voting en mass in the coming election for ethical, competent leaders who will usher in a New Great Zimbabwe with dignity, prosperity and freedom for all.

"Not Yet Uhuru", CCC Statement On Zimbabwe's 43rd Independence Anniversary

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nelson_Chamisa">Nelson Chamisa</a> who leads the opposition <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Citizens%27_Coalition_for_Change">Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)</a> has said the people of Uzumba, Mashonaland East have never known independence, freedoms, rights and peace as traditional leaders force them to support the ruling ZANU PF.
In a series of Twitter messages seen by Pindula News, Chamisa, a former Minister of ICT during the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Government_of_National_Unity">Government of National Unity (GNU)</a> said the people of Uzumba “need our support.” He wrote:

Massive victimization, intimidation and terror agonist citizens esp opposition 
Citizens in Uzumba have not known independence, freedoms, rights and peace. 
Abuse of Chiefs and Village heads to force villagers to support the hugely unpopular Zpf party.
Food &amp; Government support only available to Zpf party members -Horror stories of violence in 2008.
Most violence perpetrators especially ZPf militia now dead in mysterious deaths.
Assisted voters and command voting -Citizens in villages under 24/7 surveillance by zpf.
Command voting and assisted voters.
The roads are bad, no schools and clinics, no jobs &amp; disposable income.
Citizens in Uzumba are very courageous and determined. They need our support. Change must happen. Uzumba must be free, independent and in peace.

Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe (UMP) has since the country’s independence in 1980 been considered a ZANU PF stronghold.

The flagship projects being implemented by the Russian diamond giant “ALROSA” and the joint company “Great Dyke Investments” operating in the sphere of the platinum group of metals draw the attention of the Russian business to the rich investment opportunities in Zimbabwe.
The 4th Meeting of the Russian-Zimbabwean Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Trade, Scientific and Technical Cooperation scheduled for November this year in Harare is set to promote further the mutually beneficial 
partnership that will contribute to decreasing the negative impact of the pandemic on the national economies and to accelerating the achievement of the Vision 2030.

FULL TEXT: Russia Congratulates Zimbabwe On 40th Year Independence Anniversary

In an interview with Newsday’s Blessed Mhlanga, MDC president Nelson Chamisa said that Zimbabweans are still far away from enjoying the benefits of independence, 39 years down the line.
Responding to a question on what achievements and milestones Zimbabweans have travelled over the past 39 years years, Chamisa said:
<blockquote>We are turning 40 next year, it’s time to take stock of the benefits of the liberation struggle to say: how far have we come in fulfilling the gains of the liberation struggle. The liberation struggle was about the will of the people, one-man, one-vote, it was about sovereignty, land.
How far have we gone in addressing those fundamental questions? We continue to have disputed elections. In 2018, the elections were disputed on account of deprivation of the will of the people; that shows you and that confirms that we have achieved nothing in terms of the ethos of the liberation struggle.
On the land issue, we have not genuinely empowered our people and you see now there continues to be problems around fundamental issues of title. The land issue continues to be a hanging question. The third issue has to do with prosperity and opportunities for the people of Zimbabwe.
We are the saddest people in the world, we score least on the index of happy people in the world, because of government’s illegitimacy, governance deficit, because of the absence of comprehensive reforms, institutionally, constitutionally, economically and politically these fundamental reforms are lacking.
If you look at our laws we continue to have trails of repression from the Rhodesian times. Look at how people continue to have a police force which is questionable, typical of the Selous Scouts.
We still have deep-seated divisions, you can’t have independence when we have divisions around tribes, when you have unhealed wounds around past challenges, around Gukurahundi, Murambatsvina, erosion of pensions; all those things are wounds on the hearts and minds of people of Zimbabwe.
Independence must mean something, Independence can’t be paper independence, it can’t be rhetoric. It has to be independence in the means of production, independence in the economy, in the ownership of the means of production; those issues have not been addressed.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe celebrates Independence Day on April 18 every year. However, over the past two decades, since the formation of the opposition political party MDC, there have been divided opinion over the Day’s relevance.

Zim Has Achieved Nothing, We Have Paper Independence - Chamisa

Former president Robert Mugabe is reported to have refused his successor President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s invitation to attend the 38th Independence Celebrations at the National Sports Stadium. However, George Charamba presidential spokesperson for both Mnangagwa and Mugabe downplayed the issue saying,
<blockquote>I think people are expecting too much. It is not possible for the former President to be expected to take an active role in national issues a few months after the changes (of government). He needs to rest and he is 94. Another thing is he flew back into the country a few days ago from Singapore.
On March 19th the former President advised the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Misheck Sibanda in a handwritten note that he was due for medical check-ups. He said ‘We will be in Singapore where we shall remain until 15 April…So you can see he is aware of everything and not locked out.</blockquote>
Before his dramatic fall in November following a military intervention led by current Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Mugabe was supposed to be the presidential candidate for the ruling Zanu-PF in the 2018 elections.
