ZANU PF has dismissed allegations by former Botswana President Ian Khama that it interfered in regional electoral processes to support fellow ruling parties.
The party’s Director for Information and Publicity denied any involvement in elections in neighbouring countries and accused Khama of being a Western stooge engaged in regime change efforts.
He also claimed that Khama is unpopular in his own country and is likely to lose the upcoming elections. Said Marapira (<a href="https://newziana.co.zw/zanu-pf-dismisses-ex-president-khamas-electoral-accusations/">New Ziana</a>):

ZANU PF does not interfere in the expression of their wishes by sons and daughters of Africa. Former Botswana president Ian Khama has warned the opposition about ZANU PF’s alleged election rigging activities in the southern African region, saying Zimbabwe’s ruling party “had become a regional cancer”.
Botswana, Africa’s longest democracy, is scheduled to hold General Elections on 30 October 2024.
Khama, campaigning for Butale, addressed supporters at a rally, alleging a plot to rig the upcoming elections on October 30, 2024, in favour of President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
According to media reports, Khama claimed that ZANU PF has become a regional threat, undermining democracy by interfering in other countries’ electoral processes.
He accused Zanu PF of sending agents to rig the forthcoming elections in Botswana.
While campaigning for BPF parliamentary candidate Modiri Jojo Lucas in Francistown, Khama alleged that the Botswana ruling party was preparing to rig the general elections by using Zimbabweans to vote for President Masisi. He said:

The ruling party is preparing to rig the general elections by using Zimbabweans to vote here in Botswana. If Zimbabweans managed to cast their votes in Mozambique’s general elections, they could do that to help the ruling party in Botswana.

Masisi declared October 30 and 31 as public holidays to encourage citizens to vote.
Masisi is seeking a second term, which would be his final one if he is reelected.
According to <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/undercover-zim-journalists-vote-in-mozambique-elections/">The Mirror</a>, a regional publication in Zimbabwe, some Zimbabweans, including two undercover journalists, voted in Mozambique’s recent general elections.
The journalists, who were investigating potential electoral rigging, were among the hundreds who cast their votes at Nemanwa Growth Point, just outside Masvingo.
Earlier reports from the Mirror indicated that ZANU PF was mobilising its supporters to register for the Mozambique elections, which took place on October 9, 2024.

Several individuals confirmed their identities as Zimbabweans who had voted in the Mozambican elections.
The two journalists reported that they encountered no issues while voting, having presented both their local national identity cards and Mozambican voters’ cards at the polling stations.
Zimbabwean opposition politician Job Sikhala said that by sending its supporters to vote in Mozambique’s general elections, ZANU PF has become a security threat in the SADC region. 
However, ZANU PF has consistently denied accusations of rigging elections, asserting that it wins fairly because its policies resonate with the electorate.
Similarly, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has dismissed allegations of election rigging in favour of ZANU PF.

Ian Khama Warns That ZANU PF Could Rig Botswana's Elections

Self-exiled former Botswana president Seretse Khama Ian Khama did not travel home for the annual Sir Seretse Khama Day commemoration on Saturday, citing fears for his safety.
Sir Seretse Khama Day is a public holiday annually observed on July 1 in Botswana to commemorate the first President of Botswana on the anniversary of his birth date in 1921.
Seretse Khama was the heir and grandson of King Khama III and the father of Ian Khama.
Khama fled Botswana in November 2021, claiming his life was in danger, and has been living in exile in South Africa ever since.
In a statement released on Saturday, Khama said he had decided not to attend the commemoration because he feared for his safety. He said:

I was informed by very reliable sources here in South Africa that there was a DIS-authorised plan to carry out a “hit on me” on my way to the border, and if that plan was abandoned due to high risk, then to carry out something similar at the border when I arrived and to stage a scuffle in which a fatal accident would occur against my person.

The Botswana government has, however, denied that it is planning to assassinate Khama.
01 July has traditionally been a public holiday for the longest time in Botswana but in 2020, President Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi decided to elevate Sir Seretse Khama Day with a befitting honour.
However, his predecessor and Seretse Khama’s son accused him of “milking the name and legacy” of his father. Said Khama:

And today, the 1st of July, after an unprecedented build-up to the day through government statements and media, there will be insincere tributes paid by Masisi to Sir Seretse, milking his name and legacy in the hope of reaping some benefit from someone he does not actually respect.
And at the same time, whilst doing so, engages in the persecution of Sir Seretse’s family and engages in blatant hypocrisy by trying to prevent similar commemoration activities in Serowe, my father’s home.

Seretse Khama became the first President of Botswana after it gained independence from Britain in 1966.
He is credited with helping to transform Botswana from one of the poorest countries in Africa to one of the most prosperous.

Ian Khama Avoids His Father's Commemoration In Botswana Over Safety Concerns

Self-exiled former Botswana President Seretse Khama Ian Khama said he is in South Africa primarily because of persecution by his successor Mokgweetsi Masisi.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010029/why-i-spoke-out-on-zim-khama">NewsDay</a> quoted Khama as saying that Masisi is driven by greed, corruption, and self-interest and has overturned Botswana’s democracy which was painstakingly attained over several decades.
Khama made the remarks during a recent interview with Alpha Media Holdings chairman Trevor Ncube on the platform In Conversation with Trevor. He said:
<blockquote>
I am here primarily because of persecution. We in Botswana have for a long time thought that we were immune from what we have seen in some parts of the continent, leaders who are driven by greed, corruption, self-interest, undermining democracy assuming that being in office or being in power is only about themselves and not thinking about the people they are supposed to lead.
We have been hit with this tsunami in Botswana by this man, Masisi, who when he came into office, completely overturned the decades of democracy and the reputation we had earned ourselves as a country.
I was very much conscious of the fact that Botswana was a democracy and when we live in a global village, as we do, you cannot just limit yourself to within your own borders if you are trying to make the world a better place.
</blockquote>
Khama said Masisi is using State institutions to stifle the democratic space and persecute his opponents. He said:
<blockquote>
The whole system, the law and order, use of the police, intelligence service, and the anti-corruption agency have all been compromised and charges fabricated against people like myself. Our families have been detained and that is the order of the day.
</blockquote>
Khama, a former Commander of the Botswana Defence Force, left office in 2018 after two five-year terms.
He told Trevor Ncube that he regretted handpicking Masisi as his successor adding “I will do my utmost to ensure that I get them out of office at the next elections.”
Khama has joined the opposition Botswana Patriotic Front and intends to stand as the party’s presidential candidate.
The retired Lieutenant general has been living in exile in South Africa since 2021.

Ian Khama "Regrets" Handpicking Masisi As His Successor

Former Botswana President Seretse Khama Ian Khama said that he was vocal about Zimbabwe because its leader, the late former president Robert Mugabe, had abandoned democratic ethos and had embraced authoritarianism.
Khama openly condemned Mugabe’s rule, saying Zimbabweans were being persecuted under Mugabe as happened during the Rhodesia era.
Khama made the remarks during a recent interview with Alpha Media Holdings chairman Trevor Ncube on the platform In Conversation with Trevor. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010029/why-i-spoke-out-on-zim-khama">NewsDay</a> quoted Khama as saying:
<blockquote>
We had Zimbabwe, a neighbour right next door, (and) Mugabe who was doing the opposite of what we believed in … but there are certain fundamental basics that governments should follow if they call themselves democracies.
You had a situation in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) whereby there were sanctions on the country and the majority were being persecuted and then in an independent Zimbabwe under Mugabe, Zimbabweans are still fleeing, they are still being persecuted. So we said what difference is there between then and Mugabe’s days?
</blockquote>
Just before Zimbabwe’s military staged a coup that ended Mugabe’s long reign, Khama wrote urging him to resign over poor governance. He wrote:

The people of Zimbabwe have for a long time been subjected to untold suffering as a result of poor governance under your leadership.
It is, therefore, my conviction that by vacating the Presidency, this will usher in a new political dispensation that will pave the way for the much-needed socio-economic recovery in Zimbabwe.

Khama, who is currently in self-imposed exile in South Africa after fleeing alleged political persecution by his successor, Mokgweetsi Masisi, was a close ally of the late former Prime Minister Morgan Richard Tsvangirai.

Ian Khama Opens Up On Repeated Mugabe Criticism

Botswana’s former President Ian Khama has filed an urgent court application seeking the cancellation of an arrest warrant issued against him by a magistrate last week.
Khama’s father, the late Sir Seretse Khama was Botswana’s founding president.
He quit the ruling Botswana Democratic Party in 2019 following a dispute with his successor and incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
The warrant was issued after Khama, who has been living in South Africa since November 2021, failed to appear in court to answer charges laid against him in April.
The charges include unlawful possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property and procuring the registration of a firearm by false pretense.
The former head of State has asked the high court in Gaborone for the warrant against him to be set aside or for its execution to be stayed, citing a lack of evidence for his prosecution. He said in his court filing:

The warrant of arrest threatens my right to liberty in circumstances where I have committed no crime…should this warrant of arrest not be stayed or set aside…I would suffer irreparable harm which cannot be compensated for in any form.
</blockquote>
Khama’s lawyer said his client is still waiting to be given a date for the hearing.

Former Botswana President Files Urgent Application To Strike Down Arrest Warrant

The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) secretary-general Victor Matemadanda, who is also ZANU PF political commissar, has hit out at the former president of Botswana, Seretse Khama Ian Khama for his alleged interference in Zimbabwe’s internal affairs.
Matemadanda taunted Khama, saying the former Head of State has an identity crisis (Khama has a black father and white mother), and that he should find a wife instead of meddling in Zimbabwe’s affairs.
Speaking to war veterans in Mutare on Monday, Matemadanda, who is the Deputy Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister said:
<blockquote>There is a man who suffers from an identity crisis, who does not know whether he is black or white, Botswana former president Ian Khama.
Worse, he is yet to convince a single lady to be his wife. Imagine a bachelor to come and give Zanu PF leaders advice on how to run this country, saying I want to involve myself in Zimbabwe’s internal issues.
When you do not have the courage to tell a woman that I love you. Nonsense!
Zimbabwe is above that level to be told what to do by old bachelors. We have better things to think of.</blockquote>
In July this year, Khama posted images of himself and some Zimbabweans all decked out in T-shirts inscribed with the #ZimbabweLivesMatter statement on social media.
Matemadanda also slammed investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, former Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) secretary-general Peter Magombeyi and Bustop TV actress Samantha Kureya (Gonyeti).
Magombeyi and Gonyeti were allegedly abducted last year by suspected State agents and Matemadanda dismissed the abductions as having been stage-managed.

Matemadanda Says Ian Khama Must Get A Wife And Resolve His Identity Crisis

Former Botswana President Seretse Khama Ian Khama has called upon Zimbabweans to make personal sacrifices to free themselves from the repressive ZANU PF-led government.
Speaking in a recent interview on Botswana’s Duma FM, Khama noted that Zimbabweans can act in such a way that they will force neighbouring countries to pay attention to their sufferings. He said:
<blockquote>Time has come for Zimbabweans to do something much more. Even if it means a personal sacrifice, withdrawal of labour crossing the borders to make neighbouring states pay attention to what is happening in Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
Khama revealed that he now regrets his decision to attend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inauguration when he was still Botswana president.
He said he had hoped that Mnangagwa’s ascension to power was an opportunity for Zimbabwe to move forward but alas, the opportunity was missed. He said:
<blockquote>I was really happy to share the words he (Mnangagwa) expressed at that inauguration about how he planned to take the nation of Zimbabwe forward. Coming away from that event, I thought to myself that this is great news and I wished him all the best.
I saw this as an opportunity for Zimbabwe to break from the past ways of doing things as there were indications that the country will be on the path to prosperity again.
Sadly, that part of the letter which hoped that there would be a new dispensation, unfortunately, has not happened and Zimbabweans are saying their situation is now worse than it was under Mugabe.</blockquote>
Khama did not see eye-to-eye with the late former president Robert Mugabe, who was also accused of gross human rights violations.

"No New Dispensation In Zimbabwe," - Khama Regrets Attending ED Inauguration

Former Botswana President Ian Seretse Khama and South Africa’s former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela are among some of the names being considered to mediate talks between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his opposition rivals, ZimLive.com claims.
The report further claims that the dialogue conveners include the UN as well as UFIC founder and leader, Emmanuel Makandiwa.
The nominations were made by 16 political parties that accepted Mnangagwa’s invitation to a political dialogue.
ZimLive claims to have in its possession a document that reveals that five of the 16 participating parties voted to have the process jointly mediated by the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) and the Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC).
There other nominations with the respective votes include Bishop Chad Gandiya of the Anglican Church (1 vote); businessman and preacher Shingi Munyeza (1 vote); former Delta Corporation chairman Robbie Mupawose (1 vote); Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi of the Zion Christian Church (2 votes) and a Bishop Cele (1 vote).
The parties to the dialogue are said to have proposed the setting up of a committee called Political Actors Dialogue” or “POLAD”. The institution to house POLAD and act as the custodian of funding throughout the entire dialogue process should be the NPRC.
Meanwhile, the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Nelson Chamisa; Joice Mujuru’s National People’s Party; Nkosana Moyo’s Alliance for the People’s Agenda and Noah Manyika’s Build Zimbabwe Alliance have refused to be part of the dialogue, demanding a neutral convener.

Ian Khama, Thuli Madonsela Targeted For Mediation In Zim's National Dialogue - Report

Former president of Botswana Ian Khama has advised Zimbabwe to set up ‘independent entities that are responsible for procurement if the country is to leverage its diamonds and minerals for prosperity. Khama said that the President, ministers and senior civil servants should not be involved in the procurement process. Speaking at the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) annual congress in Bulawayo on Thursday, Khama said,

We have reinforced this through independent entities. We have also got an independent public procurement entity. In our country, no member of the Cabinet even the President make decisions on procurement. No permanent secretary can make a decision on procurement. Those decisions are made by an independent entity.
…It is so easy in a democracy to throw money at issues that are populist that at the end of the day come back to haunt you because you run out of budget. It is very important to resist the urge to do so and eventually over time you will be rewarded for doing the right thing.</blockquote>

President Ian Khama Writes An Open Letter Appealing For Mugabe To Resign Voluntarily

Botswana president Ian Khama seemed to make fun of the political situation in Zimbabwe after President Robert Mugabe fired his long serving aide and former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa from government. Khama and Mugabe have exchanged barbs in the past and criticised each other openly.
Khama who is noted for posting short subtle messages on Facebook wrote:

Ian Khama takes another sly dig at Zimbabwe and President Mugabe

Botswana president Ian Khama, on Sunday, seemed to mock his neighbour President Robert Mugabe following the decision by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to rescind his appointment as the goodwill ambassador for non-communicable diseases (NCD).
Khama wrote a post which had the single word, “W.H.O.?” on his Facebook page. This post drew many comments with some mocking Mugabe and celebrating his “humiliation.” The page was also shared more than 100 times. Khama and Mugabe have never seen eye to eye and have often criticised each other’s way of governing.

Ian Khama takes sly dig at President Mugabe Over WHO Appointment

The government of Botswana has released a statement responding to President Robert Mugabe’s attack on Botswana’s President Ian Khama. The statement takes a subtle dig on President Mugabe. Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>RESPONSE TO THE STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT ROBERT G. MUGABE
Gaborone, 5th October 2017: The Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation wishes to respond to the recent media reports in which His Excellency, Mr. Robert G. Mugabe, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe blamed the loss of the candidature bid of Botswana’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi for the position of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, on the lack of support by His Excellency, Lieutenant General Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, President of the Republic of Botswana.
In this connection, the Government of Botswana has taken note of the comments and regrets these inaccurate and unfortunate remarks. However, the Ministry chooses not to comment any further out of respect for President Mugabe’s advanced age and as such, understands that allowances need to be made.</blockquote>

Botswana chooses not to comment on attack on Ian Khama  " out of respect for President Mugabe's advanced age"

President Robert Mugabe has taken a dig at Botswana counterpart Ian Khama accusing him of not supporting Botswana’s foreign minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi’s bid for the chair of African Union (AU) Commission. Venson-Moitoi, subsequently lost the election. Mugabe was speaking at the annual Zimbabwe-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC).

President <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe">Robert Mugabe</a> has left for Lesotho where he will attend the country’s 50th independence celebrations. Last week he snubbed a similar invite from Botswana’s President, Ian Khama after Khama told an international news agency, Reuters, that it was time the 92-year-old Zimbabwean leader steps down due to old age.
NewsDay reported that a State media columnist, believed to be Mugabe’s spokesperson, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/George_Charamba">George Charamba</a>, at the weekend wrote that Mugabe would use his Lesotho trip this week as a way to hit back at Khama.
<a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Nathaniel_Manheru">Nathaniel Manheru</a> wrote,
<blockquote>President Mugabe has been invited (to Lesotho’s celebrations) and from what I understand, he is likely to honour the invitation. Just by so doing, President Mugabe will finally vividly make his point, relish his day through a damning comparison. He will be able to quietly chastise Khama, while showing the Batswana people how much of a huge cost their leader’s blunderous (sic.) diplomacy is to the two peoples, who are also close neighbours historically and even consanguineously.</blockquote>
Information minister <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Christopher_Mushohwe">Christopher Mushowe</a> yesterday confirmed that Mugabe would make the trip to Lesotho and offered an excuse for Mugabe’s failure to travel to Botswana saying,
<blockquote>The Botswana event coincided with the Zanu PF women’s league meeting that was so important the President had to be there. Botswana and Zimbabwe are friends and have been since the struggle because our people sought refuge in that country.</blockquote>
