The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of five suspects in connection with a murder case in Wedza.
The suspects, identified as Peter Mandeya (65), Simbarashe Mandeya (40), Felix Chigodora (24), Brain Mandeya (21), and Munashe Chigodora (25), are accused of violently assaulting 37-year-old Cadilla Njodzi, who was known to be a mental patient.
The incident occurred on July 30, 2024, at Peter Mandeya’s residence in Chihowa Village, Svosve, Wedza.
Reports indicate that the altercation began after Njodzi allegedly vandalised property belonging to Mandeya, including destroying a wooden door and breaking the rear mirror of a Nissan Hardbody vehicle. 
In retaliation, the suspects reportedly assaulted Njodzi with switches and their booted feet, inflicting severe injuries.
Njodzi was subsequently hospitalised due to the injuries sustained during the assault. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries on August 31, 2024, while receiving treatment at a local hospital in Wedza.

Five people from Hwedza village in Zimbabwe have been arrested for killing a man with mental problems. The man, Cadilla Njodzi, was hurt badly when the suspects attacked him for breaking things at their home. He was taken to the hospital but sadly passed away from his injuries. The attack happened at Peter Mandeya’s house on July 30, 2024. The suspects, Peter Mandeya (65), Simbarashe Mandeya (40), Felix Chigodora (24), Brain Mandeya (21), and Munashe Chigodora (25), used sticks and their boots to beat Njodzi, causing severe harm.

Five Hwedza Villagers Fatally Assault Mental Patient

Five villagers from Hwedza, Mashonaland East Province, have been convicted for the shocking assault of a fellow villager.
The incident occurred on July 4, 2024, when the suspects stripped the victim, brutally assaulted her with tree branches, and recorded the entire event on video.
The suspects, four of whom are juveniles under the age of 18 and one aged 19, were arrested after the video of the assault went viral on social media.
They were found guilty of multiple offences, including aggravated indecent assault, cyberbullying, unlawful detention, and assault.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/wedza-women-in-viral-assault-video-found-guilty-sentenced/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>, Vimbai Mike (19) and a 17-year-old woman, who is married with two children, have each been sentenced to a total of five years in prison for indecent assault.
They received an additional year for cyberbullying related to the posting of the victim’s video on social media, one year for unlawful detention, and another year for assault. However, these sentences will run concurrently within the five-year term.
The other three juveniles involved were spared custodial sentences on the condition that they refrain from committing similar offences for the next five years.
The court heard that on July 4, 2024, at 11:00 AM, Vimbai Mike (19), Rudo Manjere (17), Lilly Rose Munyoro (16), Lillian Chido Munyoro (17) and Sandra Vhumbunu (17), lured 18-year-old Mavis Mada to Vimbai Mike’s homestead in Mupfuuri village under the pretence of giving her vegetable seedlings.
Once there, they locked her in a hut, stripped her naked, and took turns assaulting her with sticks, inserting three sticks into her private parts while recording the incident.
The victim lost consciousness, and the suspects poured water on her before releasing her at 3:00 PM.
The subsequent arrest of the suspects led to the recovery of a Vivo cellphone that had been used to record the assault.

Five women from Hwedza hurt another woman very badly. They hit her, took off her clothes, and recorded everything. The five women were found guilty and sent to jail for five years. The oldest woman and a married woman got the same sentence. The younger women were not sent to jail but have to be good for five years. They hurt the victim really badly, and the police found the video on a phone. The women did a very bad thing, and now they are being punished for it.

Hwedza Women In Viral Assault Video Found Guilty, Sentenced To Five Years In Jail

An 18-year-old woman from Hwedza, Mavis Made, has begun a three-month nurse aide training programme at Pacific Hospital in Mabvuku.
Made was the victim of a horrific four-hour attack by a group of fellow teenage women last month in Mupfuuri Village in Hwedza.
Her assailants recorded the brutal assault, during which they inserted three sticks into her private parts.
Despite the trauma of this savage attack, Made, who is an ardent follower of the ZCC church, told <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/teenage-woman-who-was-battered-by-five-colleagues-starts-training-as-a-nurse-aide/">H-Metro</a> that she was now feeling better. She said:

Allow me to thank Dr Mandaza of Pacific Hospital for giving me free treatment. I am now feeling better.
The hospital went on to give me the opportunity to undergo training as a nurse aide and it is my wish to succeed as a way of thanking them for their offer.

Pacific Hospital Sister in Charge, Nyasha Smileage Chidzingwa, said Made will undergo the training for free. She said:

Mavis will be staying at the premises and receive training for free.
By training her, the Hospital wants to equip and develop her, apart from treating her.

She also had the opportunity to meet with patients in the maternity wards before beginning her nurse aide training programme.

Hwedza Brutal Attack Survivor Starts Nurse Aide Training

Thirty (30) students at Chemhanza High School in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Wedza/">Hwedza</a>, Mashonaland East province, were expelled following allegations of bullying and physical fighting. The incident involved the severe assault of a Form 3 student, said to be the daughter of a <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Central_Intelligence_Organisation_(CIO)/">Central Intelligence (CIO)</a> operative.
The incident occurred on September 17, and the school authorities initially suspended the students involved. A concerned parent discovered her sibling fleeing from a dormitory and learned that Form 4 students were assaulting younger students. She took them to her room for safety. However, she and other students were expelled on allegations of beating up the Form 3 student. The parent claimed that the student’s perceived connection to a CIO operative made her untouchable.
According to reports and voice notes shared with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200017137/chemhanza-expels-30-pupils-over-violence">NewsDay</a>, disgruntled parents expressed shock at the school’s decision to expel some Form 4 and 6 students who were preparing for their final exams. A parent said one of the children saw her sibling fleeing a Forms 1 and 2 dormitory through a window. The parent said:

On making inquiries, she was informed that Form 4 pupils were beating up juniors and she then took the initiative to take them to her room for safety.
However, she was expelled with other pupils on allegations that they beat up a Form 3 pupil (name supplied). She is said to be a daughter of a CIO (operative) and she is untouchable.
Since Sunday, they have not been given food and have not been allowed into the study area, are not attending lessons and when we were finally alerted as parents, we went to the school to hear the story in full.
</blockquote>
Parents criticised the school authorities for not recording the students’ statements and accused them of bias. Said one of the parents:

There was no fairness in asking the children about what transpired. They were being asked leading questions about what they wanted to achieve. 
</blockquote>
Another parent said they were given random minutes from the hearing conducted by the headmaster and the District Schools Inspector. Said the parent:

The headmaster was accompanied by the district schools inspector for Hwedza, Mr Parani, and he is the one who gave the instruction that we go back home with our children.

Violence in Zimbabwean schools, including bullying, physical fights, and assaults, is a serious concern. Physical fights and assaults happen due to personal disputes, gang-related activities, or other factors within school premises. In February this year, a Form Four student from Founders High School in Bulawayo <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/02/14/form-4-student-stabbed-in-gang-related-violence/">was fatally stabbed</a> by a 16-year-old pupil from Hamilton High School during a gang-related altercation. The victim confronted the attacker after he had beaten up his friend, leading to a fight between students from both schools. The deceased, identified as 16-year-old Wayne Ndlovu, was stabbed in the neck.

Chemhanza High School Has Expelled 30 Students Following Allegations Of Bullying

A 49-year-old man from Hwedza, Mashonaland East Province is on the run after allegedly killing his mother over allegations of witchcraft.
The suspect, Everisto Magaisa, reportedly attacked his mother Faustina Magaisa with an unknown object on Wednesday morning and left her unconscious.
He then informed his brother Francis, that he had assaulted their mother and left her unconscious.
Francis informed the village head who rushed and found the victim lying in a pool of blood.
Police were informed and and came and rushed her to Mt St Marys Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
ZRP seputy spokesperson for Mashonaland East Province Assistant Inspector Misheck Denhere confirmed the incident to The Herald. He said:
After assaulting his mother, he went to his brother’s homestead where he also indicated that he was looking for his cousin Jealous whom he accused of dating his wife some time back.
He also indicated that he was intending to confront his other brother whom he accused of telling him that he was a psychiatric person.
Mental illness is a significant concern in Zimbabwe and one of the biggest challenges the country faces is the lack of resources and funding for mental health services.
Another challenge is the stigma surrounding mental illness in Zimbabwe. 
Many people still believe that mental illness is a sign of weakness or spiritual possession, and this can prevent individuals from seeking help.
Economic hardship, unemployment, and poverty in Zimbabwe have contributed to a rise in mental health issues, including depression and anxiety.
The signs of mental illness include sudden or extreme shifts in mood, an increased desire to isolate oneself from friends and family, and unexplained aches and pains, headaches, fatigue, or other physical symptoms that do not have a clear medical cause.
Mentally ill people may experience thoughts of self-harm or suicide and abuse alcohol, drugs, or other substances.

Hwedza Man Kills Mum Over Allegations Of Witchcraft

Three people were killed while 27 others were injured when a commuter omnibus side-swiped with a Mandaza bus in Hwedza (Wedza) on Monday.
In a statement released on 18 April, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the bus veered off the road before landing on its left side.
The accident occurred at the 29-kilometre peg along Wedza- Mutiweshiri Road. Said Asst Comm. Nyathi:

… the Zimbabwe Republic Police, recorded another fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 17th April 2023 at the 29-kilometre peg along Wedza- Mutiweshiri Road in which three people died on the spot whilst twenty-seven (27) others were injured when a commuter omnibus side swiped with a Mandaza bus, resulting in the bus veering off the road before landing on its left side.

The bodies of the victims were taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Wedza for post-mortem while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
He said the three (3) victims have been identified by their next of kin as follows:

<li>Agnes NYADONGO (53), a female adult of Gombe Village, Mutare,</li>
<li>Caroline BANDA (34), of Dora, Dangamvura, Mutare,</li>
<li>Nenyasha DARARA, a female infant aged four (4), of Dora Dangamvura, Mutare.</li>
</ul>
Asst Comm. implored public service vehicle drivers to be cautious on the roads and comply with all road rules and regulations to safeguard lives.
Meanwhile, a concerned citizen, Diva Mandeya said authorities are unprepared to respond to disasters such as major accidents.
In a post on Twitter, Mandeya narrated how members of the public worked with authorities with very few resources to save people who were trapped in the wreckage of the Mandaza Bus. <a href="https://twitter.com/DivaMandeya/status/1648109741313228801">Below is Mandeya’s Twitter thread</a>:

[AT] 9 am we got an alarm a fatal accident had happened 2.5km from Goto Business Center paGanyau.
I quickly changed my itinerary and rushed with 2 employees to see what help we could render. 20 mins later we discovered we were in for a huge responsibility.
A few motorists were already ferrying the injured to our poorly equipped clinic at Goto, 3km away.
There were people trapped under the bus lying on its side &amp; a child could be heard crying helplessly.
It was a hounding &amp; desperate situation that villagers frantically pulling out the injured could not do much about.
Shortly police officers arrived but they were bemused by the magnitude of the crisis.
Traffic control on the highway became orderly but there was no command on how to proceed with the rescue mission.
There was total confusion. More officers and an ambulance arrived in good time including nursing staff from Mt St Mary’s Mission Hospital 27 km away.
Commendably, the injured were ferried to the local clinic in the ambulance and several private vehicles.
The real problem was what to do with the trapped of which the crisis was magnified by haphazard police action.
There was absolutely no command element directing operations. Every person who had an idea tried to prevail over the other but there was no meaningful rescue effort.
There was no qualified rescue personnel until a Marondera fire brigade rescue team arrived 4 hrs later from 100km away.
We mobilized a tractor from a local businessman but it could not pull the bus to save the trapped.
Later a JCB from Wedza GP arrived &amp; combined wt the tractor to lift the bus off the trapped people but failed.
We ended up using jacks, picks, and shovels to try and dig the people out to no avail. We could see &amp; tell the people had died.
In spite of warnings from police about damaging the bus we used axes to cut up metal but we fell short until we rushed back home to get a generator and a grinder which become the best improvisation.
After some arduous cutting and bending we managed to retrieve the first body 5 hours later. 2 were still trapped.
Working with the ill-equipped Marondera men we retrieved the other two bodies around 4 pm amid wailing and heart-rending mourning from relatives who had arrived from Mutare, almost 200km away.
I feel haunted as l write this thread now. The sounds are ringing in my ears as l type. It’s traumatic.
l feel that some of the accidents happening in this country can be avoided.
a). Highways must not be left littered with deep potholes
b) Speed dzemabhazi anonzi Yuotong are not appropriate for our roads.
c) Police need emergency rescue training. They were clueless.
d) Every district must have appropriate rescue equipment &amp; services
e) Accident scenes or any crime scene must have a clear command element and structure.
f) Highways need centre line markings and overtaking restriction lines.
g) Overloading is going unchecked.
h) The Youtong bell/ hooter is too alarming. It can cause dangerous panic and disorientation to other motorists.
These are my humble recommendations. I am not OK tonite. We have responsibilities that we need to embrace as citizens of Zim.

PS. Mandaza Bus Company only brought contingency for the recovery of their bus. Damaged luggage and stranded passengers had nowhere to go and no recourse.
We had to ferry, accommodate &amp; feed 6 survivors whose fate is unclear as far as compensation is concerned.

3 People Perish In Hwedza Bus Accident

Police have arrested Edward Mhishe (46) of Rambanepasi Village in Hwedza for allegedly killing his wife’s lover and assaulting his wife on Sunday night.
Mhishe was customarily married to Linda Garaba (32), but in April this year they separated and Garaba had to move out of their home to stay with her mother in Hwedza.
<h2>What transpired</h2>
<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/man-arrested-for-killing-wifes-lover/">The Herald</a> reports that on Sunday Mhishe heard that Garaba was in Bozho Village at her new boyfriend’s house and he went there and asked the boyfriend’s uncle, Samuel Mahupeta, to help him persuade his wife to come back home.
Mahupeta turned him down arguing that Ms Garaba was now dating his relative.
Mhishe then went to his mother-in-law where he begged her to talk to her daughter about solving their issue, however, she refused and referred him to their aunt.
On the same day around 7 pm, Mhishe went back to Mr Mahupeta’s home where he pleaded with her wife to go with him, but she refused, promising to follow later.
Around 9 pm on the same date, Garaba and her boyfriend Warikandwa left their uncle’s place and went to sleep. 
Mhishe went to Mr Warikandwa’s homestead around 10 pm while armed with a wooden hoe handle and attacked Warikandwa and Garaba.
Warikandwa died on the spot while Garaba, who was left unconscious had to be rushed to Sadza district hospital where her condition is said to be critical.
Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East Province Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi confirmed the assaults. Chazovachiyi said:

He then left and went to his mother-in-law’s homestead where he said to her “ndapedza masports nemwana wenyu nechikomba chake” [I’ve dealt with your daughter and her lover].
After saying that, he then ran away heading for his village. His mother-in-law rushed to the now deceased’s homestead where she found the two lying in a pool of blood. She screamed for help and at the same time, her daughter gained consciousness, in a confused state.

Man Assaults Wife, Kills Her Lover

A High Court judge Monday sentenced a Hwedza man to death for the murder of his employer in 2015 and throwing the body into Rhodesville Dam.
Tapiwa Murombo was yesterday found guilty of the premeditated murder of Partson Musarandoga whose body was found in the dam days after he went missing.
Murombo allegedly struck Musarandoga on the head with an axe at a farm along the Hwedza Highway, forged a suicide note directing him to sell properties from the deceased’s home and disappeared. 
The police pursued him along the Harare-Chirundu Highway in a high-speed chase, shot him in the leg as he tried to escape and eventually arrested him.
Murombo denied killing Musarandoga saying he parted with him after the deceased had agreed to give him a vehicle as payment for a US$4 000 debt.
But Justice Justice Priscillah Munangati-Manongwa ruled that Murombo had failed to convince the court that he was innocent. Munangati-Manongwa said:

The court finds that the reasons advanced were not such as to convince the court not to pass the death sentence. In essence, after taking all factors into account, this court finds that there are no circumstances of a mitigating nature that would call for a lesser sentence.
Neither a life sentence nor a sentence of not less than 20 years will meet the justice of the case.
The accused shall be returned to prison, be held until the execution of the sentence according to law.

She said  Murombo was not in the group that is excluded from the death sentence as stipulated by section 48(2)(c) of the Constitution.

Zimbabwean Man Sentenced To Death For Murdering His Employee

A COVID-19 patient fled from the isolation ward at Hwedza Hospital on Wednesday last week for fear of an injection and a senior doctor was among the people who chased after the 23-year-old man to bring him back.
Acting Hwedza District Medical Officer Dr Herbert Bandiki told H-Metro that the patient picked up some bricks from a nearby construction site and threatened to attack people who were trying to apprehend him. Said Bandiki:
<blockquote>What happened is that when he came to the hospital, he showed symptoms of pneumonia, having some difficulties in breathing and we admitted him.
As is the procedure, we admitted the patient, administered drugs, and in the afternoon, maybe he thought he felt better.
So when I was about to get another injection whilst the patient was in the ward, he ran out of the isolation ward.
When we were trying to apprehend him, this patient was violent that we then tried to get help from the police.
Currently, the patient is being monitored at his homestead. We then tested the mother who came out negative and the other contacts he met.
… I was one of those who ran after him through a nearby bush area.</blockquote>
Bandiki said the police and an environmental health officer went to the man’s homestead and did some health education there.
He said the patient is recovering very well at home and his mother confirmed that he is difficult to convince when it comes to injections.

Doctor Chases After COVID-19 Patient In Hwedza

Four men from Glen Norah, Harare lost six cattle carcasses after they were seized and burnt by the police recently.
According to the police, the four had bought the cattle in Sadza, Mashonaland East province but had no documents authorising them to transport the meat.
Speaking to NewsDay on Thursday, Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza said:
<blockquote>Police intercepted these men who were transporting six cattle carcasses to Harare from Sadza. They had no clearance whatsoever.
The cattle were slaughtered under a tree which is contrary to health meat inspection laws which recommend slaughtering to be done at abattoirs.
The abattoirs will then issue a certificate. The quartet had no clearance to transport the beef, hence it was confiscated and disposed of through burning as a per law.
We urge members of the public to follow procedures and get the necessary documents when dealing with the transportation of meat.</blockquote>
Mashonaland East province has experienced an outbreak of January disease which has reportedly wiped out thousands of beasts.
Villagers are allegedly selling infected animals at very low prices to butcheries to at least salvage something from their depleting herds.

Police In Hwedza Seize 6 Cattle Carcasses & Burn Them

An accident which claimed the lives of 14 people in Hwedza on Monday has been declared a State of Disaster.
7 people died on the spot while 7 later succumbed to injuries when a truck carrying maize side-swiped a bus which had encroached into its lane along Hweza-Mutiweshiri road.
The truck hit a Toyota Hilux and ploughed into Mugodhi Apostolic Church members who were standing by the roadside, waiting for transport.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has revealed some (11) of the names of the victims of the accident. These are as follows:

Police Release Names Of 11 Of 14 Victims Of The Hwedza Accident

The government has declared the Hwedza accident which occurred on Monday, a State of Disaster.
14 people were killed when a truck carrying maize veered off the road and ploughed into a crowd that was gathered by the roadside waiting for transport on Monday.
The accident occurred in the Chitope area where members of the Mugodhi Apostolic Church are celebrating Easter.
Initially, 13 people were confirmed dead, 6 died on the spot while 7 were declared dead on arrival at Mount St Mary’s Mission Hospital. The police have since raised the of the number of the deceased to 14.
In his condolence message to the bereaved families, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said:
<blockquote>The death yesterday of worshippers at the Mugodhi Apostolic Shrine in Hwedza has cast a dark cloud on both the Easter holiday and our Independence celebrations.
This freak accident which comes when the nation is still reeling from effects of the devastating Cyclone Idai once again highlights the importance of absolute care, and ensuring roadworthy vehicles on our roads.
On behalf of the party, Zanu-PF, Government, and on my own behalf, I wish to convey my deep, heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families, and to all members of the Mugodhi Apostolic Faith, on this tragic mishap.
The whole nation joins them in mourning as they go through the painful motions of this horrendous accident.</blockquote>
