Police in Mashonaland Central Province have discovered the remains of approximately seven people in a mine shaft at Elvingz Mine, located on Makalanga Farm in Mazowe.
Deputy provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/remains-of-7-people-discovered-in-old-shaft/">The Herald</a> that the remains were found at the top of a mountain where open-cast mining is currently taking place, reaching depths of about 30 metres.
He said the mining operations at Elvingz Mine are linked with an old German shaft where the remains were located.
Sgt Major Chikasha said that debris removed from the shaft by an excavator included old torn black plastic, ragged clothing, damaged shoe heels, tattered blankets, suspected human bones, and human hair, as well as ten pairs of trousers in green, maroon, and brown colours. He said:

Some trousers had human bones inside suggesting that a human body was thrown in the shaft intact.
The bones had lost shape due to decomposition. Black and white plastic papers were also in the shaft.
</blockquote>
Sgt Major Chikasha appealed to people with information that could assist in the investigation and identification of bodies to visit the nearest police station.
He said the remains will be sent to Parirenyatwa Hospital for forensic examination to establish the possible number of bodies, period of death and probable cause of death.
It is alleged that on August 31, 2024, at approximately 7:30 AM, Luckson Mufunga (35), Marshal Ngwenta (22), and Kimpton Geza (40), employees of Lingyong Zimbabwe, were contracted by Elvingz Mine to drill holes in preparation for blasting.
While assessing the shaft, Mufunga used an excavator to remove a heap of debris, which included plastic, torn clothing, and damaged shoe heels.
Upon closer inspection, he discovered what appeared to be dislodged human bones and hair. He promptly informed his coworkers, who confirmed the presence of the human remains.
Mine manager Webster Chikuku was notified, and a police report was filed. The following day, CID Bindura and forensic experts arrived at the scene to investigate further.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an investigation after suspected human remains were uncovered during renovations at the Harare offices of Better Brands, a gold mining and marketing company owned by Pedzai “Scott” Sakupwanya.
Sakupwanya is the Member of Parliament for Mabvuku and the President of the Northern Region Soccer League side Scottland Football Club.
According to an internal police memo seen by <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/police-probe-after-suspected-human-remains-found-at-scott-sakupwanya-offices/">ZimLive</a>, a construction worker was using an excavator to uproot a tree at the property on Churchill Road in Avondale when he dug into what appeared to be human bones.
Officers from Avondale Police Station attended the scene and as part of the investigation, they took bone samples from the site and referred to a forensic lab for DNA analysis.
Sakupwanya “recently bought the premises,” previously occupied by a company called Afrihype Nyakatsanga Safari, which has relocated to South Africa, according to the memo.
The DNA testing to establish if the bones are human remains could take several weeks.

Police in Zimbabwe are investigating after possible human remains were found at the Harare offices of Better Brands, owned by Scott Sakupwanya. A construction worker found bones while digging with an excavator. Sakupwanya recently bought the property, which used to belong to another company. Police took bone samples for DNA testing to see if they are human. The testing could take weeks. Sakupwanya is a Member of Parliament and owns a soccer club. The investigation is ongoing.

The Bulawayo City Council has confirmed the discovery of human remains at a housing development project currently underway in Killarney.
This comes after the latest Bulawayo City Council minutes on cemeteries and burial services revealed that the remains of 21 people were exhumed from  Killarney suburb.
In a statement issued on Monday, 19 February 2024, Town Clerk Christopher Dube said that it appears there was a settlement in the area some centuries ago. He said:

The City of Bulawayo would like to advise members of the public of the exhumation of human remains at a housing development project currently underway in Killarney.
It appears that there was a settlement in the area some centuries ago and human remains were encountered at various points of the development site.
The Department of National Museums and Monuments in the presence of the Zimbabwe Republic Police collected the remains which were buried at Luveve Cemetery.
The City of Bulawayo advises that the exhumation and reburial may continue to happen as the development work continues.

Bulawayo Town Clerk Confirms Discovery Of Human Remains In Killarney Suburb

The remains of 21 people were exhumed from a housing development project site in Bulawayo’s Killarney suburb, the latest Bulawayo City Council minutes on cemeteries and burial services have revealed.
The source of the human remains, which were reburied at the city’s Luveve Cemetery, remains a mystery as the minutes were silent on the matter. Reads the minutes:

The human remains were exhumed by the Department of National Museums and Monument of Zimbabwe.
</blockquote>
According to the council minutes, Luveve Cemetery received bodies from outside the city among them from Victoria Falls, Umguza, Nkayi, Gwanda, Harare, Gutu and Insiza all of which recorded 1 each.
The <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200023278/remains-of-21-people-found-in-city">Southern Eye</a> reported that in 2011, pupils playing football at the grounds of St Paul Secondary School stumbled on human bones sticking out of the ground.
The remains were re-buried without forensic investigations.
Human remains have also been discovered in some parts of Matabeleland where Gukurahundi massacres were carried out in the 1980s.
In 2018, villagers discovered human remains scattered along the banks of the Bhode River near the Kezi business centre.
Several skeletons were also dug out in the area on the instructions of Chief Nyangazonke.
The villagers were ordered to re-bury the remains without any forensic investigation to establish their identity and cause of death.
The remains were re-buried at the Kezi Rural Hospital graveyard.

Remains Of 21 People Found In Bulawayo

Police in Mashonaland East Province have recovered suspected human remains allegedly belonging to an elderly woman who went missing in April this year.
Beatrice Kunyiminya (75) went missing on 24 April 2022 from her homestead in Marimo Village, Juru.
The human remains were discovered by another villager, scattered in tall grass.
The villager informed Beatrice’s relative Joseph Kunyiminya who then reported the matter to the police.
The scene was attended to by Juru police officers and they recovered a human skull, bones, floral dress, doek, hat and a white blouse.
The remains were taken to Murewa District Hospital for postmortem and DNA testing.
Beatrice’s relatives believe that the remains are that of their missing relative.

Human Remains Recovered In Juru Linked To Missing Granny

Human remains were found scattered along the banks of Bhode River near Kezi Business Centre, Matobo district. The bones were discovered by Mrs Antonetta Nyathi who said that she had gone to the river to look for soil to go and work on her mud floors at her home.
Speaking at the scene last week, Chief Nyangazonke said he suspected that the remains belonged to people killed during the liberation war. He also revealed that he was in the process of consulting the community on the way forward and indicated that they might dig up the rest of the remains and rebury them somewhere. However, Matabeleland South Police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele told The Chronicle that he had not yet received a report on the matter.
