A new HIV drug, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sunlenca">Sunlenca</a> (Lenacapavir), is now available, but awaiting approval by the Government.
The drug is taken twice a year by people with multi-drug-resistant HIV Type One.
It is administered through injections once every six months and has recently been approved in the United States.
The Director of Aids and Tuberculosis in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr. Owen Mugurungi said they welcomed the development. He said:
<blockquote>
We welcome such developments as they greatly improve adherence to treatment.
You will find out that daily intake of ARVs or any other drugs is associated with defaulting as pill fatigue grows for some people.
There are also cases of people missing doses so the development of drugs that are taken a few times will greatly improve adherence.

In November 2022, the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Medicines_Control_Authority_of_Zimbabwe">Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe</a> (MCAZ) approved the use of a long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) as pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention.
However, last week, MCAZ warned against the use and sale of Gammora, a drug from abroad as a treatment for HIV saying they have not approved its use in Zimbabwe.

New HIV Drug, Sunlenca, Awaits Govt Approval

The African led HIV vaccine trial which was scheduled to be conducted between 2018 to 2022 is gathering pace.
The initiative is being implemented in four African countries including Zimbabwe. The trial will be one of the highlights at the upcoming 10th conference on HIV science in Mexico.
Owen Mugurungi, Aids and TB director in the Health ministry believes that the vaccine will play an essential role in limiting the spread of the disease. He said:
<blockquote>A vaccine is the cheapest way to manage any disease. Immunisation is better than treatment which is more expensive.</blockquote>
Although the initiative is African led, it is being funded by European states.
The vaccine is expected to reduce the currently high demand for antiretroviral drugs.
Mugurungi further said:
<blockquote>Everyone is looking forward to an effective vaccine which will save many lives and billions of dollars which are being spent on treatment.</blockquote>
Participants to the study shall be constantly and carefully monitored to establish the effectiveness or effects of the vaccine.
HIV prevalence has been significantly declining in Zimbabwe. However, stakeholders believe that there is still room for improvement.

African-Led HIV Vaccine Trial Gathers Momentum

Two people have to date been cured of the HIV-1 virus according to a report.
In a case study published on Tuesday in the journal Nature, some scientists believe that the “London patient” has been cured of the viral infection.
The London cure report comes more than 10 years after the first case, known as the “Berlin patient” tested negative.
The leader of the study, a professor at University College London’s Division of Infection and Immunity, Ravindra Gupta said:
<blockquote>By achieving remission in a second patient using a similar approach, we have shown that the Berlin Patient was not an anomaly and that it really was the treatment approaches that eliminated HIV in these two people.</blockquote>
The approach used in both patients entailed the use of stem cell transplants from donors who carried a rare genetic mutation, known as CCR5-delta 32, that made them resistant to HIV.
The London patient has been in remission for 18 months since he stopped taking antiretroviral drugs.

London Patient Cured Of HIV/AIDS

In a press conference yesterday, Prophetic Healing and Deliverance leader (PHD) Prophet Walter Magaya yesterday retracted his claims that he had found a cure for HIV and Aids and apologised for making the announcement.
Magaya said they are going to run very intense trials until they have come up with a position on the plan. Said Magaya:
<blockquote>I carry a very important apology to the Ministry, to the public at large and all organisations. I, after discovering what I discovered, which was tested, and holding a report which was overwhelming to myself, I went on and announced what I was carrying in my hands without taking note of the authorities of Zimbabwe. We rushed with the results of what we were carrying without the authorities scrutinising it. At the same time I would like to acknowledge the Ministry, which has held me like a child and showed me the way.</blockquote>

Magaya Apologises, Retracts HIV Cure Claim, Aguma To Undergo Intensive Clinical Trials

In an interview with NewsDay, comedienne Felistas “Mai Titi” Murata who disclosed her HIV status said she is willing to try Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries leader Walter Magaya’s HIV “cure”.
She said if the drug fails to work on her, she would speak out, but if it produces results, she would join forces with Magaya to market it. Said Mai Titi:
<blockquote>Let me try. If it means paying, let me pay. I am a public figure, [so] if it’s a lie, I will go back to the public and reveal the truth. If it’s really true, I will prove to the world that it heals. Using someone like me is actually good for his marketing because I am in the public eye. All I want is healing. I am willing to give it a try and I don’t think he can lie to an extent of openly making such an announcement.</blockquote>
