A research paper conducted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the government, Muthengo Development Studies (MDS), Zimbabwe Civil Liberties and Drug Network (ZCLDN), and Youth Advocates Zimbabwe (YAZ) has revealed that approximately 60% of school dropouts in Zimbabwe are a result of drug and substance abuse.
The research identified common drugs abused by students, including cannabis, cough syrup, crystal meth, illegal alcohol, pharmaceuticals, crack, cocaine powder, and heroin. The study further highlighted that drug abuse contributes to a cycle of poverty and crime as it leads to students leaving school prematurely. The report read in part:

 The study revealed disturbing patterns directly attributable to alcohol, drug and substance (ADS) abuse: 70% of gang violence is among school children; 15% of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases involve adolescents and young people; and an increase in school dropouts with 60% having dropped out of school after being expelled for ADS abuse...
An increase in public education and awareness campaigns about substance abuse, especially directed at adolescents and young people. The establishment of partnerships between schools, communities, and local authorities to promote healthy behaviours among adolescents and the young people.

The organizations involved in the research also discovered that 40% of suicide attempts were connected to drug abuse. The study revealed that adolescents and young people from wealthier families tended to consume more expensive substances like cocaine, crack, heroin, and legal alcohol, while those from disadvantaged families used cheaper substances.
The main reasons for substance abuse included parental death, poverty, idleness, and peer pressure, among other factors. The report highlighted that Manicaland province had the highest drug usage, followed by Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, and Bulawayo. The organizations emphasized the need for more outreach programs to promote positive behavioural changes among young people.
In Zimbabwe, there is a lack of sufficient rehabilitation facilities for drug abusers. These individuals receive therapy in healthcare institutions but are released back into an environment that contributes to relapse. Clement Nhunzvi, a lecturer and mental health practitioner at the University of Zimbabwe, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Drug_Abuse_in_Zimbabwe/#cite_note-nhunzvi-3">explains in his 2014 publication</a> that they return to a setting characterised by poverty, unemployment, and frustration, which leads them back to drug abuse. Hospital records indicate that a significant number of readmissions were due to substance-induced disorders, with less than 3% of individuals achieving long-term recovery and follow-up. The psychiatric rehabilitation team faces challenges in both clinical practice and an unsupportive community environment for their clients’ recovery.

UNICEF Says About 60% Of School Dropouts In Zimbabwe Are A Result Of Drug Abuse

A 71-year-old foreign national was arrested on Saturday at the Robert Mugabe International Airport while trying to smuggle drugs worth ZWL$3 million.
The drug mule, Hans Arne Ingemar Petersson, had 3 kilogrammes of heroin stashed in a plastic bag that was in one of his traveling bags.
ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest. He said:

On 08 April 2023, detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics, Harare acted on the received information and arrested a foreign national, Hans Arne Ingemar Petersson (71) at RGM Airport, in connection with possession of 3kgs of Heroin with an estimated street value of ZWL$3 400 000.00.
The drugs were recovered stashed in a plastic bag, which was in a false compartment created in a suitcase.

According to <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/add.15729">the Society for the Study of Addiction (SSA)</a>, Zimbabwe’s illicit substance use problem increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Commonly used substances in Zimbabwe include glue, bronclee, mangemba, cane sprit, marijuana, codeine and methamphetamine (crystal meth).
Very high unemployment rates in Zimbabwe, coupled with poverty and despair, have resulted in increasing numbers of youthful citizens also turning to use drugs as a way of entertainment.
According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, people who have problems with drug abuse can be assisted at the following public as well as private health centres:

Zimbabwe Police Intercept 71 Year Old Drug Mule Carrying $3 Million Heroin

Two Zimbabweans were arrested at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in India on Friday after they were found with 7.9 kg of heroin.
According to <a href="https://www.outlookindia.com/national/two-zimbabweans-held-with-heroin-worth-rs-50-cr-at-mumbai-airport-news-240475">Outlook India</a>, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mumbai zonal unit received a tip-off and laid a trap at the airport on Friday and intercepted a man and a woman travelling from Addis Ababa (Ethiopia).
The DRI officers searched the travellers’ baggage and found some packets containing light brown powder concealed in their trolley bags.
The powder tested positive for the presence of heroin and the contraband weighed 7.9 kg.
The two Zimbabweans were promptly arrested under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and remanded to judicial custody by a special court.
The identities of the suspects have not been revealed.

Two Zimbabweans Found With 7.9 Kilogrammes Of Heroin In India

Zimbabwe arrested three foreign nationals between September and November while trying to smuggle heroin to India with a combined street value running into millions of dollars.
The government has attributed the arrests to vigilance and increased surveillance by the country’s security agents.
Vitalis Kudrjasovs (27) who had a Latvian passport, was arrested on September 8 at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare following a tip-off.
He was in possession of heroin which he intended to smuggle to India, according to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/foreign-nationals-arrested-over-drugs/">Chronicle</a>. 
Security details observed him as he went through check-in, immigration and customs formalities and he was arrested as he was about to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight en route to India.
His luggage was put in a security scanner leading to the discovery of the suspicious package. A further search led to the recovery of heroin with a street value of ZW$ 6.96 million which was concealed in the lining of his bag.
Kudrjasovs has since appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court on charges of dealing in dangerous drugs and was remanded in custody until Thursday 17 November for trial.
In another case, Shaik Zeenat Khatoon Rafiq (43) of Mumbai in India was arrested on October 1 by detectives at the Victoria Falls Airport for attempting to smuggle heroin with a street value of US$500 000.
She intended to board an Ethiopian Airline to Addis Ababa en route to India. Rafiq was found with heroin stuffed in the lining of her travelling bag at the airport’s scanning point.
During the same month, Ronald Florentius Paes (66) was arrested at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport after he was found with heroin with a street value of  ZW $5.84 million which he intended to smuggle to India.
The police intercepted Paes after he had gone through all the check-in formalities. He was arrested when he was about to have his luggage loaded onto the plane.
The detectives took his bags to the scanners and it was discovered that they contained suspicious contents, which were tested and it was discovered that it was heroin. Paes had boarding passes to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia en route to India on Ethiopian Airlines.
It has been established that most drug traffickers come from West Africa, South America and the Middle East and use Zimbabwe as a transit route.

Three Foreign Nationals Arrested While Attempting To Smuggle Heroin To India

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported that it intercepted heroin at Victoria Falls International Airport that was set to be exported to India. A police statement seen by Pindula News noted that the police acted on a tip-off. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Shaik Zeenat Khatoon Rafiq (43), on 01St October 2022 at Victoria Falls International Airport for unlawful possession of 9.2kgs of heroin.
On 01st October 2022, detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics, Victoria Falls received information that the suspect was in possession of Heroin which she intended to smuggle to India. The detectives reacted to the tip-off and tracked the suspect to Victoria Falls International Airport.
The suspect, who intended to board an Ethiopian Airline to Addis Ababa en-route to India, was found with 9,2kgs of Heroine stuffed in the lining of her travelling bag at the airport’s scanning point.

In a related case, detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics, Beitbridge reacted to a tip-off and arrested a cross-border transporter, Obvious Moyo (34) on the 1st of October 2022, in connection with unlawful possession of 50 X 100 mls of Benylin cough syrup. 
The cough syrup was found hidden underneath other luggage in a Toyota Hilux vehicle with foreign number plates. Investigations by the Police indicated that the suspect is being used by drug peddlers to transport contraband from South Africa into the country.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Police in Chipinge acted on a tip-off and arrested a self-proclaimed prophet, Paul Mashava (37) for unlawful possession of a python skin at his residence in Gaza.
Police recovered the python skin from the suspect’s bedroom, rolled in a plastic stashed in a tool’s box.
Police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi applauded the public for supplying useful information to the Police.
