The Heroes Day gala which was set to be held this Tuesday will now be held on Wednesday (tomorrow) at Vhengere Stadium in Rusape.
According to a report by <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/heroes-musical-gala-moved/">The Herald</a>, more than 20 artistes are expected to perform, among them Madzibaba Nicholas Zacharia, Mai Patai, Enzo Ishall, Mark Ngwazi, Essau and Tatenda Macheso, Simon Mutambi, Andy Muridzo, Dorcas Moyo, Chief Hwenje, Sandra Ndebele, Romeo Gasa, Leonard Zhakata, and DJ Fantan.
The gala will run under the theme, “Leaving no one and no place behind”.

Heroes Day Gala Set For Wednesday

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday, 14 August, declared that Zimbabwe will never be ruled by puppets of the West.
Mnangagwa made the declaration at a burial ceremony of former Attorney General and Zimbabwe’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Johannes Tomana, and Retired Brigadier General Milton Siziba at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.
He accused Western powers of using the opposition to try to unseat ZANU PF.  In the past, the ruling party has claimed that the opposition MDC and CCC are Western puppets. Said Mnangagwa:

Under our mass revolutionary party, ZANU PF, we remain a government of the people, by the people and for the people.
Zimbabwe will never, ever be run by a puppet government of our erstwhile oppressors. Never.
This is a position that the national heroes we are interring and the heroines we are honoring today played their part and left us a legacy of resilience and unflinching patriotism.
</blockquote>
The President asserted that despite the sanctions imposed by the United States and its Western allies, Zimbabwe continued to thrive. He said:

Twenty-three years after the ruinous sanctions imposed by some Western countries, our country continues to defy all odds.
We are transforming our infrastructure as well as industrialising and modernising our economy.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe marked National Heroes Day on Monday, and national heroes Tomana and Siziba were buried on the same day at the National Heroes Acre.

<blockquote>NATIONAL HEROES’ DAY PRESS STATEMENT 10 AUGUST 2020
The National Transitional Justice Working Group (NTJWG) joins the rest of the nation in commemorating National Heroes’ Day.
This day is celebrated annually on the second Monday of August in recognition of the sacrifices of all those that fought to liberate our country. National Heroes’ Day is this year commemorated under the theme, “Remembering Our Heroes”.
Section 23 of the Constitution obligates the State, all institutions, and agencies of government to accord due respect, honour, and recognition to veterans of the liberation struggle.
The Constitution further tasks the State to take reasonable measures, including legislative, for the welfare and economic empowerment of veterans of the liberation struggle.
State institutions and functionaries have been implicated in torture and inhuman and degrading treatment, oftentimes involving security agents.
Particularly, incidences involving abductions and torture by unidentified individuals have been on the increase. Recently, the country witnessed abductions and torture perpetrated against opposition Member of Parliament Joana Mamombe and MDC Alliance activists Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova on 13 May 2020.
The nation was perturbed when the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage during a press briefing on 4 June casually dismissed the disappearance and subsequent torture as staged and fake.
However, this day is not just for celebrations but is also a day for reflection on the sacrifices that had to be made by fellow Zimbabweans for the attainment of independence from colonial rule.
As Zimbabwe remembers its heroes, the NTJWG calls upon Zimbabweans and the Zimbabwean leadership to reflect on the aspirations of the country’s liberators and assess to what extent the current state of our country fulfils those aspirations.
The liberation movement was driven by the desire for self-rule, ending discrimination, ensuring equality of all before the law, ending brutality and paving way for a Zimbabwe in which all people have equal rights.
As a way of carrying forward the virtues of democracy in a free and independent Zimbabwe, the Declaration of Rights was included in the Zimbabwean Constitution guaranteeing all people fundamental rights and freedom from discrimination.
This year’s National Heroes’ Day commemorations come at a time when there is a government clampdown on dissenting voices accompanied by widespread human rights abuses which have seen journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume incarcerated and denied bail for calling upon the people to speak out and petition the government against the government.
The situation in Zimbabwe has resulted in the emergence of the #ZimbabweanLivesMatter movement on social media.
This movement is a call by Zimbabweans all over the world for an end to human rights violations and recognition that the lives and voices of ordinary Zimbabweans do matter.
It would, therefore, be remiss for this year’s commemorations not to driven by the need to reflect on how the human rights situation in Zimbabwe should be improved.
Such a reflection is necessary to enable the country to dialogue, address the human rights crisis, and move forward in keeping with the values of a free and independent Zimbabwe premised on democratic virtues and a culture and spirit of constitutionalism.
As the nation reflects on the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle it is important that the liberation heroes that are still alive be part of the conversation as they are also key stakeholders in peace processes in Zimbabwe and can provide insight on how the country can be moved forward.
The NTJWG, therefore, calls upon the Government of Zimbabwe not to merely commemorate National Heroes’ Day but also put into practice the virtues of democracy and constitutionalism.
This can only be done through respect for human rights and guaranteeing of non-recurrence of human rights abuses.
In light of the current human rights crisis in Zimbabwe, it is imperative that Zimbabweans come together through a broad-based national dialogue process and establish a national vision that fosters unity and peace in the nation.

FULL TEXT: Local NGO Statement To Mark National Heroes' Day Commemorations

A former minister in President Robert Mugabe’s government, Patrick Zhuwao, has said that the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/08/03/how-nssa-lost-175-million-of-pensioner-money-audit-report/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">type of corruption at NSSA</a> which saw the possible prejudice of US$ 175 million is common in Zimbabwe’s public sector.
In an article titled “Legacy of the Heroes has been tainted – It was never restored” Zhuwao writes:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe continues to regress deeper into poverty and suffering. The nation is captured through the AK47. Members of the security establishment have been using mafia-style strategies and techniques to force themselves onto national resources. They have run roughshod on corporate governance in the country’s public sector institutions. Even standard regulations designed to protect the environment are wilfully violated by entities that are linked to this mafia.
The media reports of a classic example of such corporate governance violations involves Africom which is 51% owned by Fernhaven Investments, one of whose directors is General SB Moyo, the coup announcer. Despite board misgivings, NSSA, a minority shareholder with only 4.5% shareholding in Africom, became the sole guarantor of a US$15 million loan from Afrimex to Africom.
Africom persistently defaulted on the loan and Afrimex demanded its money. NSSA, as the guarantor, made payments to Afrimex. Fernhaven was to have indemnified NSSA by providing security for the loan in the form of Longcheng Plaza which, coincidentally, was built on wetlands in flagrant violation of environmental protection standards and norms.
Zimbabwe’s public sector is replete with such examples of wide spread plunder and looting which include the US$15 billion diamond heist and the US$3 billion command agriculture scandal. The proceeds of such unparalleled theft of public resources do not filter to the ordinary Zimbabwean or even the ordinary veteran of the liberation struggle. Yet, very sadly, the majority of Zimbabwe’s veterans of the liberation struggle are used and paraded as the reason why such entities as Fernhaven Investments are created. The vast majority of the veterans of the liberation struggle are being used and played, vari #kuitiswa.
Despite being referred to as Operation Restore Legacy, the November 2017 coup had nothing to do with restoring the legacy of the revolution. The coup sought to replace civilian authority over the governance of Zimbabwe with military might. That military might which is now in control of the machinery of the state is working for the selfish benefit of a few individuals within the security establishment.</blockquote>
Zhuwao is currently living in exhile in an unknown location following the November 2017 coup.

The Standard has published a Nelson Chamisa Heroes Day message in which he implores Zimbabweans to take part in changing “unmerited circumstances and harsh realities of joblessness, hopelessness and poverty.”
An excerpt from the message:
<blockquote>Today, this once breadbasket of Africa is now a basket case. Surely, this stands out as a betrayal of the ideals of the liberation struggle. Incredibly, Zimbabwe houses vast wealth, exceptionally talented human resources, rich minerals, fertile lands and natural wonders.
The opportunities for economic transformation and prosperity are limitless and immediately available if we have a people’s government, one that cares about the nation.
The population of our young and very educated people makes an ambitious economic growth path more certainly achievable in our lifetime.
My fellow citizens, nothing short of a political solution through national dialogue will extricate our country from the jaws of impoverishment and suffering
We must have genuine comprehensive political and electoral reforms to transform our country and make it prosperous again
Let us be the heroes of our time by bringing back that glitter, glamour and glory to our motherland.
The cost of doing nothing far exceeds the cost of doing something. We must change our unmerited circumstances and harsh realities of joblessness, hopelessness and poverty. That work begins today by fixing our politics and governance deficits.
It is heart-wrenching to note that war veterans who were at the centre of the struggle for our independence are living under squalid conditions and without any social or economic support from the state.
The men and women who fought for the independence of this country from colonial rule had a vision and aspirations. Sadly that vision has being shattered by criminal behaviour and selfish, personal pursuits for wealth.
The vision that has been set by our forefathers and yet betrayed by their successors is not far beyond our reach, but only if we start working now.</blockquote>

Temba Mliswa who retained the Norton seat in the parliamentary elections as an independent has called for Zanu-PF to separate national events from party events. Mliswa made the remarks after being “excluded” when he attended last week’s Heroes Day commemorations.
Said Mliswa,
<blockquote>Is this the new dispensation? Let’s learn to separate national events from party events and accommodate each other. ZANU PF leaders seated whilst an independent is ostracised…We can’t bring progress and togetherness as long as national events are exclusionary and that’s why the opposition has refused to be part of national events since they are held as party functions.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson senior assistant commissioner Charity Charamba said that 119 road accidents recorded during the heroes’ holiday compared to 101 during the same period last year. She said that the number of people who died remained unchanged at 13.
