Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani has hailed the late Heath Streak as a true legend who touched the lives of many people.
Paying his respects, Mukuhlani described Streak as “a true great” of the game of cricket. He said:

This is a very sad day for Zimbabwe and a sad day for cricket as we, on the one hand, mourn the demise of a true great of our beautiful game and, on the other, celebrate the greatness of what Heath gave us: he played with passion, spirit and was nothing less than an inspirational figure who raised our flag high and touched lives within the sport and beyond.
On behalf of the ZC Board, Management, Players and Staff, I would like to pass our heartfelt condolences to Heath’s loving wife, Nadine, his family, friends and the entire cricket fraternity on the loss of the icon.

Streak passed away on Sunday, 03 September, at the age of 49 after battling colon and liver cancer.

Zimbabwe Cricket Mourn Heath Streak

Opposition parties have paid tribute to the late legendary former Zimbabwe cricket team captain Heath Streak who succumbed to liver and colon cancer on Sunday, 03 September.
Streak, Zimbabwe’s all-time leading wicket-taker, died at the age of 49.
In a statement, the opposition CCC party described the late Streak as a legend who represented his country with honour and distinction. CCC said:

We stand together with the nation in grieving the loss of a legendary cricketer, Heath Streak. He was 49. He represented our country with great honor and distinction throughout his career.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife and family during this difficult time. May his soul find eternal peace.

In their condolence message, ZAPU said Streak was “an athlete par excellence” and “a shining star”. The opposition party said:

We join Nadine and the Streak family in mourning a super patriot, an athlete par excellence, Heath Streak.
Zimbabwe has lost a shining star and an example of what it means to be Zimbabwean, regardless of race, ethnicity, etc. Go well Champ! You’re a hero!

Streak’s death was announced by his wife Nadine, who wrote on social media on Sunday morning:

Former Zimbabwean cricketer and cricket coach Heath Streak has died.
Streak’s death was announced by his wife, Nadine Streak, in a post on Facebook. She wrote:

In the early hours of this morning, Sunday the 3rd of September 2023, the greatest love of my life and the father of my beautiful children, was carried to be with the Angels from his home where he wished to spend his last days surrounded by his family and closest loved ones. He was covered in love and peace and did not walk off the Park alone. Our souls are joined for eternity Streaky. Till I hold you again 💔
</blockquote>
In May this year, Sean Williams, a current Zimbabwe cricketer and a close friend of Streak told <a href="https://www.sacricketmag.com/former-zimbabwe-captain-battling-cancer/">Cricbuzz</a> that the latter was battling colon and liver cancer. He was quoted as saying:

Heath has colon and liver cancer (Stage 4). All I know at this stage is Heath’s immediate family was called to go to him in South Africa and I am not sure of any details thereof.
I did message Heath and he did respond but I’m sure at this stage the family will want privacy.
It sounds like the cancer is spreading pretty quickly cause last week he was fishing.
Heath is my mentor and did a lot of good things for a lot of people and basically saved my life and career. We just pray he will be OK.

In a statement in May, Streak’s family said the former cricketer was undergoing treatment in South Africa and asked for privacy. The statement said:

Heath has cancer and is undergoing treatment under one of the most respected oncologists in South Africa.
He remains in good spirits and will continue to fight this disease in a similar vein to that which his opponents faced during his revered days on the cricket field.

There will be no further official statements regarding his health at this time. Any news that becomes public should be regarded as rumour.

Streak retired from international cricket in October 2005 to become captain of Warwickshire County Cricket Club having previously played county cricket for Hampshire in the United Kingdom.

Zimbabwean cricket legend Heath Streak has broken his silence following social media rumours on Wednesday that he had died.
The 49-year-old former cricketer said he was “very upset and hurt” after one of his former teammates Henry Olonga announced he had died.
Streak told Indian outlet <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/i-am-alive-and-well-says-heath-streak-23305140">Mid-Day</a> that he was alive and well and that he was upset over the rumours. He was quoted as saying:

It is a total rumour and a lie. I’m alive and well… I am very upset to learn that something as big as someone apparently passing can be spread unverified, especially in our day and age of social media.
</blockquote>
Earlier on Wednesday, Olonga had taken to social media to pay tribute to Streak. He tweeted:

Sad news coming through that Heath Streak has crossed to the other side.
RIP [Zimbabwe cricket] legend. The greatest all-rounder we produced. It was a pleasure playing with you.
See you on the other side when my bowling spell comes to an end.

However, hours later Olonga backtracked on his claims as he confirmed Streak was in fact alive. He wrote:

I just heard from him. The third umpire has called him back. He is very much alive folks.

<a href="https://africasacountry.com/2023/05/the-meanings-of-heath-streak/">Fungai Machirori</a> suggests that the career of Zimbabwean cricketing legend <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Heath_Streak/">Heath Streak</a> reflects the unresolved tensions of race and class in Zimbabwe. Machirori, a creative and communication and digital media specialist, says despite this, there are few white Zimbabwean sporting figures who can generate interest and discussion across the country’s many divides.
Recently, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2023/05/14/health-streak-battling-cancer/">news emerged of Streak’s critical illness as he battles advanced cancer</a>. Streak, a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s golden cricketing era, made his one-day international debut in 1993 and test debut the following month. Streak remains Zimbabwe’s all-time leading wicket-taker in both Test and ODI cricket, and the only Zimbabwean to complete the double of 1000 Test runs and 100 Test wickets, and 2000 ODI runs and 200 ODI wickets.
Streak and South African Lance Klusener stood out on their sides for their fluency in local languages, in a sport where the majority of players were white. Streak was a native Ndebele speaker who could offer post-match interviews to local media news outlets in the language.
Zimbabwean cricket’s earliest teams rarely reflected the demographics of a black-majority nation, with most national players being white and generally coming from farming and private school backgrounds. Streak became the Zimbabwean team captain in 2000 but resigned amid tensions with the Zimbabwe Cricket Union board over payments and proposed team quotas based on race. He returned to Zimbabwe’s captaincy in 2002 but faced criticism for not taking more political stances favourable to the board and government. It was during Streak’s captaincy at the 2003 Cricket World Cup that <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Henry_Olonga/">Henry Olonga</a> and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Andy_Flower/">Andy Flower</a> wore black armbands in silent protest over the worsening social and political conditions in the nation.

Former Zimbabwean Cricketer Heath Streak "Extremely Ill" - Coltart

Former <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Cricket">Zimbabwe Cricket</a> captain, Heath Streak, has issued an apology following <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/04/14/heath-streak-banned-from-all-cricket-for-8-years/">an 8-year ban from all cricket for breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.</a> We present Streak’s statement in full below.
<blockquote>It is with a heavy heart and anguish that I come before all of you mindful and aware that I have let a lot of people down through my actions and omissions. Whatever my intentions were. I understand that when one agrees to be bound by a set of rules there can be no excuse for not following them and as I engaged the ICC. over the past two (2) years, during this very difficult process. I realised the marked difference between fault and responsibility.
I apologise sincerely to my family, friends, the cricket-loving public and most of all my fellow Zimbabweans who have, over the years. shown me love and support during the numerous trials and tribulations we have faced. In 2017.1 met an individual keen to invest in cricket in Africa and in particular, they wanted to sponsor a 720 Tournament in Zimbabwe which would be called the Safari Blast. The individual was subsequently vetted and cleared through the usual protocols and to be honest, I let my guard down as the friendship and potential business partnership blossomed. The nature of our relationship was fraternal and cordial at all times. I genuinely believed it was a safe space. I also hoped the relationship would be beneficial not only to myself and to the Academy but to Zimbabwean cricket and I pursued its growth with vigour.
At the onset I was engaged, and paid the Bitcoin, to assist in buying and building teams in different regional T20 competitions. which was successful, resulting in the purchase of a team in Dubai for this individual. Much later on in our friendship, the only other thing I received was a bottle of whisky and my wife was gifted a phone. Several months down the line the ICC then brought to my attention the fact that the individual with whom I had been dealing, and some of the information that I had shared during our friendship/interaction may have been used for online betting.
The ICC carried out a detailed and thorough investigation of our relationship over a two (2) year period. I submitted myself to the process and co-operated at every turn. At the end of the enquiry, it became evident that through my excitement and desire to bring the T20 Tournament to Zimbabwe and build a relationship with the individual, I had unwittingly flouted some of the elements of the ICC ethics code. 
In hindsight, I should have been more cautious especially given my position and all the information and opinions to which I am privy. however insignificant they appeared to me at the time. <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/04/16/streak-resigns-as-heath-streak-cricket-academy-president-academy-rebrands/">As a team owner</a>, I also introduced people to the individual in the belief that I was adding value to their careers and creating opportunities. I understand fully that it may not have been my fault but was. and it is, my responsibility to uphold the ICC code.
I, therefore, take full responsibility for my actions. I hope that my sanction may serve as a cautionary tale for all people involved in this amazing game we love, at every level, and will help them understand that they are duty-bound to a higher standard of confidentiality and restraint. I also want to place on record to the public and fans that I was not involved in any match-fixing, spot-fixing or attempts to influence a game or share information from a changing room during a match at any given time in our relationship. This position has been confirmed by the ICC itself in its own statement.
I accepted the sanction by the ICC after extensive soul searching and having a better understanding of accountability. I hope my admissions and acknowledgment of my wrong-doing, wittingly or unwittingly, will set an example to current and future stakeholders in our beloved sport of cricket and I will continue to help the ICC as and when I am needed so that the next generation of players and administrators can see the potential dangers and pitfalls as well as understand the serious ramifications of their actions. I have agreed to help the ICC in their investigations and anticorruption education program as well.
I take this opportunity to once again sincerely apologise to my supportive family, friends and all cricket fans who have been affected by my poor judgment and lack of discretion. I respectfully request that any pain or angst felt be directed at me and that my family and friends are not vilified for my actions. I also hope that cricket in Zimbabwe should not be punished or suffer for my actions directly or indirectly. I commit to serving out my sanction as guided by the ICC and am committed to help them and cricket in Zimbabwe in whatever manner I can I look forward to continuing to contribute to the development of cricket in Zimbabwe, making amends and returning to the game as and when the ICC sees it fit.

Heath Streak, the former Zimbabwe Cricket captain and coach has resigned as the president of the Heath Streak Cricket Academy in Bulawayo.
The Academy has since rebranded to Zimbabwe Youth Cricket Academy.
This comes after Streak’s ban from the sport by the International Cricket Council over corruption which all started with two pieces of Bitcoin and an iPhone for his wife.
The Zimbabwe Cricket <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/full-text-statement-from-zc-chairman-tavengwa-mukuhlani-on-streak-ban/">(ZC) has since endorsed the ICC’s decision to ban Heath Streak</a> from all cricket activities for eight years after he accepted five charges of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.
Incoming president, former chief executive officer Joseph Rego Friday confirmed Streak’s resignation from the academy.
The board of trustees of the academy met yesterday and resolved to change the name of the academy. Speaking to NewsDay, Rego said:
<blockquote>The board formally ratified the resignation of Streak from all academy-related operations and the trust. The board also accepted the request made by Streak that the name of the trust and the academy be changed. The board has resolved that the academy shall henceforth be known as the Zimbabwe Youth Cricket Academy.</blockquote>
<div>Rego said he appreciated the honesty and transparency exhibited by Streak following the ICC decision.</div>
Former board chairman Elifasi Mashaba is now vice-chairman.
Streak will continue to count his losses following his participation in corrupt activities between 2017 and 2018.
The ICC has been carrying out investigations for over a year until the conclusion of the matter this week.
Over the last year or so, Streak had kept a low profile after losing all his jobs abroad.
The government of Zimbabwe is contemplating pressing criminal charges against the former fast bowler and it could yet get worse for him.

Former national cricket team coach Heath Streak has been hired by Scotland to join its the country’s cricket technical team on a consultancy basis. Scotland will be playing in a Triangular Twenty20 Series with hosts Netherlands and Ireland. Said Streak,

Heath Streak Hired As Consultant By Scotland Cricket

Former Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) coach, Heath Streak’s jersey from Indian Premier League (IPL) Kolkata Knight Riders was auctioned off for $1000. The shirt was bought by businessman Zak Hawa and the proceeds will be channelled towards the drilling of a borehole at the Old Mutual Heath Streak Cricket Academy in Bulawayo. Speaking at the event, Streak said,

Heath Streak's IPL Shirt Auctioned For $1 000

In a statement, Zimbabwe Cricket explained the decision to dismiss coach Heath Streak and captain Graeme Cremer after the senior men’s cricket team failed to qualify for next year’s World Cup. Zimbabwe Cricket also fired batting coach Lance Klusener, bowling coach Douglas Hondo, fielding coach Walter Chawaguta, team analyst Stanley Chiwoza and strength and conditioning coach Sean Bell.
Zimbabwe Cricket said the decision to dismiss  the Zimbabwe ‘A’ team and the Zimbabwe Under-19 team coaching stuff was motivated by bad performances. Said Zimbabwe Cricket:

However, the Board also realises that their best was not good enough. Certain important decisions taken by senior technical staff do, in the Board’s opinion, call into question the judgment and ability of the concerned staff to make such crucial decisions. Their Best Was Not Good Enough: Zimbabwe Cricket Explains Decision To Fire Heath Streak

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has tasked Industrial Psychology (Pvt) Ltd to recruit Heath Streak’s replacement following his dismissal after failing to qualify for the Cricket World Cup.
Streak through his lawyer George Mlotshwa, a senior partner at Titan Law, had indicated that he will stop ZC from appointing new personnel to fill his position. In a letter, Mlotshwa indicated to ZC that an attempt to recruit Streak’s replacement is unlawful. Part of the letter written by Mlotshwa to ZC reads:
<blockquote>Our clients note, with bemusement, the consistent bungling, amounting to harassment, associated with the unlawful attempts to terminate their employment contracts with Zimbabwe Cricket. We wish to point out that:
1. The section 12 (4a) and 12 (4) of the Labour Act 28:01 sought to be relied upon in terminating our client(s) contracts are of no force and effect. They simply do not apply in the present circumstances.
2. Any attempt to terminate our clients’ employments contracts on notice, is, for the record, also of no force and effect at law.
3. Any attempt to employ any other person in the positions our clients are presently employed by ZC is, and will be, patently unlawful, and also of no force and effect</blockquote>

Zimbabwe Cricket Moves To Replace Heath Streak

Former National cricket team coach Heath Streak who was fired by Zimbabwe Cricket will walk away with over $100 000.
 Streak who was fired on Monday after being reinstated by Zimbabwe Cricket was on a $23 000 per month contract. Zimbabwe Cricket is compelled by law to pay Streak three months salary as well as two weeks’ salary for every year served, while he can also negotiate for other benefits and will be paid for any outstanding leave days. The termination letter by Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed Streak will be getting three months salary. Part of the letter reads:
<blockquote>The three months’ notice of termination of your employment contract shall run from 1st May 2018 to July 208. Notwithstanding the date of termination, you are hereby directed not to report for duty with immediate effect (that is from the date following the date of your receipt of this letter). As for your terminal benefits, please note that Zimbabwe Cricket has opted to pay you cash in lieu of three months’ notice together with any other benefits you may be entitled to at law.</blockquote>

Heath Streak Could Get Over $100 000 After Being Fired By Zimbabwe Cricket

On Monday Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) briefly reinstated Heath Streak and 18 members of the coaching staff before firing them again. ZC served the coaches with letters of termination of contracts. This comes after the coaches had refused to step down after the national cricket team failed to qualify for the 2019 Cricket World Cup to be hosted by England and Wales
An excerpt of the letter written to coaches reinstating them reads:
<blockquote>After extensive consultations with our client on the position of the law, our client has resolved to unreservedly retract all and any communication leading to the ultimatum to resign and the subsequent dismissals against your clients. For the avoidance of doubt, Zimbabwe Cricket has withdrawn the decision to summarily dismiss your clients.</blockquote>
However, Streak’s lawyer Gerald Mlotshwa last week wrote to Zimbabwe Cricket saying that the<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/04/06/heath-streak-challenges-legality-of-dismissal/" rel="noopener" target="_blank"> contracts could only be terminated according to the labour laws of Zimbabwe</a>. Streak has garnered support from many people who include <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/04/04/zim-cricket-board-should-have-been-fired-not-the-coaches-david-coltart/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">David Coltart</a> and Temba Mliswa who want the ZC board to be dismissed.

Zimbabwe cricket team coach, Heath Streak, has issued a statement via video responding to allegations made by Zimbabwe Cricket chairperson Tawengwa Mukuhlani. Mukuhlani has alleged that some of the decisions made by Streak during the Cricket World Cup Qualifiers were racially motivated, something Streak has categorically denied.

Speaking during an interview on the sidelines of the commissioning of a classroom block at Sizinda/Tshabalala Vocational Training Centre in Bulawayo yesterday,  Minister of Sports Raymond Kazembe, said has summoned the Zimbabwe Cricket board over the Chevrons’ failure to qualify for the International Cricket Council World Cup and the subsequent dismissal of the entire coaching staff headed by Heath Streak.
Kazembe said he will be meeting the ZC board on Wednesday and will be making a decision thereafter. Said Kazembe:
<blockquote>here is always a danger of being a victim of knee jerk reaction, yes as much as we were not happy with the failure to qualify, I prefer doing things procedurally so I have asked the Zimbabwe Cricket board to submit a report. In fact I am meeting them on Wednesday to hear what exactly transpired and then we will make a decision from there. I don’t want knee jerk reactions, I don’t like them. I always prefer to look at things from an informed view point. I want to ensure that I don’t make uninformed decisions so after the Wednesday meeting, we will then take it from there. I am one person who is not into knee jerk reactions simply because something has happened. You must be able to separate emotions from reason, you need to do first things first before rushing into certain conclusions.</blockquote>

Govt Summons Zimbabwe Cricket Board Over Heath Streak's Dismissal

The Zimbabwe Cricket board (ZC) has explained the reasons why they decided to sack coach Heath Streak and his entire coaching staff including captain Graeme Cremer after Zimbabwe failed to qualify for next year’s World Cup.
Streak was fired together with batting coach Lance Klusener, bowling coach Douglas Hondo, fielding coach Walter Chawaguta, team analyst Stanley Chiwoza and strength and conditioning coach Sean Bell. The ZC statement read:
<blockquote>It is important that the public understands why the ZC Board has taken these decisions. The actions taken by the Board are only and purely as a result of the very unsatisfactory performances and results of the Zimbabwe National team, the Zimbabwe ‘A’ team and the Zimbabwe Under-19 team.
“The Board believes that things have come to a point where bad performances and bad results cannot be absorbed with a shrug of the shoulders and considered as business as usual.
The stakeholders, the fans and in fact the entire Nation of Zimbabwe deserve better, much better in terms of performances and results from their National cricket teams.     
The ZC Board has not taken these decisions lightly. It well understands the professional and personal ramifications that this will have on the impacted staff and can appreciate and sympathise with their disappointments.

In the Qualifier, where ZC had home advantage, the team just barely scraped past Afghanistan in a match that they perhaps should have lost, tied against Scotland in a match that they perhaps should have also lost and were behind on points against Ireland at the halfway mark.
And the Board finally lost patience and confidence in the Head Coach and his technical staff after questionable decisions were made in the critical must-win Super Six match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which ultimately sealed ZC’s fate.
This was the most important match that ZC was playing in years (at home against an Associate team) and the Board believes that the planning, strategy and execution adopted for this game was beyond reasonable comprehension and, in fact, way off the mark.
As far as the ‘A’ team is concerned, the ‘A’ team and Development team suffered some disastrous results, including a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of the UAE and a winless run in the Africa T20 Cup in South Africa (against provincial sides).
To say that this was very disappointing is putting it very mildly. Regarding the Under-19 team performances, despite providing the coaching staff the best ever preparation, facilities and funding over a two-year period, which included expensive tours to Namibia, South Africa, Australia and India, and arriving in New Zealand two weeks earlier than normal to train, play extra games and acclimatise, the Under-19 side performed abysmally at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand where they finished in 11th place out of 16 teams.
And this was after the Head Coach promised management, not once but many times, at least a top-four finish at the event. Again, to say that this was very disappointing is putting it very mildly.

Zimbabwe Cricket Explains Decision To Fire Heath Streak, Graeme Cremer

Former Zimbabwe national cricket team coach, Heath Streak believes he did not deserve to be fired by his former employer for failing to qualify for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup.
Streak believes he did not deserve to be fired because he won Zimbabwe’s first One Day International away series victory when they defeated Sri Lanka last year. Said Streak:
<blockquote>We were not given any explanation, never got any chance to explain ourselves. All we got was an e-mail from the Managing Director. I was told to communicate with the other members of the technical team that we should resign by 3pm on Friday or we would be fired. None of the guys resigned, so we have been summarily dismissed. My staff and I didn’t deserve to be sacked, we won first series in 17 years, we never had such crowds that we saw during the Qualifier even during my playing days. If we had failed to make the Super Six of the Qualifier then we deserved to be fired.</blockquote>
Streak is now in India where he has taken up role as bowling coach of Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders.

Heath Streak and the entire coaching staff of the Zimbabwe national cricket team have been fired after the team failed to qualify for the 2019 Cricket World Cup to be held England and Wales. Streak and his staff were given an ultimatum to resign by 3 pm on Friday or to face the sack. However, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/03/30/you-can-fire-me-but-i-am-not-resigning-heath-streak-responds-to-zimbabwe-crickets-ultimatum/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Streak refused to cave in and said that he would not resign.</a> He has since confirmed that he has been fired. Writting on microblogging site, Twitter, Streak said,

It is with great regret and shock that I was told by ZC that myself and my Coaching team must resign by 3 pm yesterday, failing which we would be fired. I chose NOT to resign as I believe this to be degrading to our National Players and my technical team. As a result, we have been dismissed with immediate effect.
