The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has forecasted a heatwave from today until 12 March, with temperatures expected to rise as high as 41 degrees, although some isolated thundershowers are expected this week.
A heatwave is when the maximum and minimum temperatures are unusually hot over 3 days.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 05 March, MSD urged people to stay hydrated as the heatwave could cause health-related complications, including sudden death for vulnerable citizens. The Met Department said (via <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/victoria-falls-airport-tightens-security/">Chronicle</a>):
<blockquote>
These extremely hot conditions are caused by a combination of factors, such as the persistent northerly air mass or wind flow that originates from the low-pressure system at the surface of the atmosphere and a high-pressure system at upper levels with a strong subsiding motion that prevents the heat energy from escaping into the outer atmosphere.
In addition to these uncomfortably and unbearably hot conditions, thundershowers are expected to occur over some areas of the country.
</blockquote>
The Department advised people to drink more water or any hydrating fluids, avoid prolonged stays under the sun, stay in the shade and wear wide-brimmed hats or use umbrellas.

Met Department Warns Of Heatwave

The recent surge in temperatures across Zimbabwe has sparked concerns among health experts regarding the potential risks to public health. With the absence of rain, the consequential depletion of pastures for livestock and the drying of dams, particularly in the southern region, the situation has become increasingly worrisome.
Medical professionals have issued warnings about the possibility of life-threatening illnesses, including heat stroke, due to the extreme temperatures being experienced in many parts of the country. They are urging the public to take precautionary measures, with staying hydrated being of utmost importance. However, it is advised to avoid consuming alcoholic beverages, caffeinated drinks, and sugary beverages as they contribute to dehydration.
Bulawayo City Council health services director, Dr Edwin Sibanda-Mzingwane said the public should avoid direct exposure to sunlight as it may increase dehydration levels. He told <a href="https://herald.co.zw/be-wary-of-heatwave/">The Herald</a>:
<blockquote>
People should drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration, which may result in blood pressure-related illnesses. When you are dehydrated it means you will not have enough water in the body, leaving the body largely with salt causing blood pressure.
So, instead of trying to measure the number of litres you drank, just check the colour of your urine.

Another medical health expert, Dr Misheck Ruwende, said the effects of the heat could be mild to severe.
<blockquote>
The implications can be as mild as just headaches and I’m sure a lot of people are having headaches due to this weather.
You can have heat rash, heat burn going up heat cramps. You can also experience life-threatening ones for example heat stroke and heat exhaustion. 
So, we encourage people to drink water as much as possible. They should avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks because those types of drinks make us lose water. We have to be as hydrated as possible.
The public should avoid leaving children, the elderly, and pets in the cars because the car can quickly heat up even if the windows can be slightly opened. 
You might have heard of children who died after being left in the car. That is a big problem and it can easily happen and we must never leave the elderly and minors in cars.
The people who are at higher risk and the elderly, people suffering from asthma and heart diseases. Their symptoms can be exacerbated by the heat and they have to stay away from heat as much as they can.

The rising temperatures and lack of rainfall have had a detrimental impact on farmers and the general public alike. The prolonged dry spell, which is a reflection of El Nino weather conditions, has instilled anxiety and fears of drought. Environmental experts attribute these adverse weather patterns to climate change induced by greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, until more rains are received, the situation is expected to remain unpredictable.
In terms of outdoor activities, it is advisable to plan them during the cooler parts of the day, particularly in the morning and evening when temperatures are lower. From a nutritional perspective, incorporating hydrating foods into one’s diet, such as watermelons, cucumbers, peaches, and lettuce, can also help combat dehydration.
Despite reports circulating of collapsing and deaths due to the heatwave, these claims have been dismissed as false. According to the Meteorological Service Department (MSD), the recent heatwave can be attributed to clear skies and reduced cloud formation. However, they anticipate transitional weather patterns with cooler winds and increased rainfall in the coming days, which should provide some relief from the intense heat.

Health Experts Warn Of Severe Health Complications As Temperatures Surge In Zimbabwe

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned the public that temperatures are set to further rise this Tuesday before the country gets rains.
Members of the public have also been urged to avoid the outdoors and stay hydrated all the time to avoid health complications.
A heatwave is an air mass of high temperature covering an extended area and moving relatively slowly. In short, it is a period of abnormally hot and usually humid weather.
In the past days, many areas in Zimbabwe have been recording high temperatures, with the highest being Beitbridge at 45 Degrees Celsius of 113 Fahrenheit.
MSD forecaster James Ngoma said the high temperatures were normal for this time of the year and people should take necessary precautions to be safe. Said Ngoma:
<blockquote>
People should stay indoors to avoid this heat during the peak hours, which start at 10 am to 3 pm. Children should also be monitored and wear hats when playing.
Persons in malaria-prone areas should take necessary precautions, which include spraying insecticides, applying mosquito repellents and sleeping under mosquito nets.
</blockquote>
He, however, said despite the heat, isolated thunderstorms are expected over Matabeleland provinces from Wednesday (tomorrow) onwards.
Online weather forecast service, ZIMCAST, said it is not advisable for anyone to be outdoors under direct sunlight. It said:

Members of the public should drink plenty of water, stay out of direct sunlight and avoid alcohol, energy drinks, carbonated drinks with sugar and drinks with caffeine.
They should consider eating light meals and avoid having large meals in one sitting.

Health expert Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said members of the public should increase their intake of water and avoid being outdoors as extreme dehydration could put people at risk of deep vein thrombosis which may result in sudden and catastrophic collapse.
Heatwaves are also associated with health risks such as heat strokes especially for people suffering from non-communicable diseases, said Ngwenya.

Heatwave To Intensify - Met Department

Zimbabwe is expected to start receiving heavy rainfall from Wednesday (tomorrow) starting with the southern parts of the country.
This was said by Meteorological Services Department (MSD) Senior Meteorologist James Ngoma in an interview with ZBC News on Monday. Said Ngoma:

It has rather been dry right throughout the country, but on Wednesday we are expecting rains and further spread of the rainfall pattern from southern country covering the whole country, solid rain indeed. We advise people to keep indoors during thunderous periods.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, the country has been experiencing high temperatures over the past couple of weeks and this is expected to continue right into next week, according to MSD.
Health expert Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said members of the public should increase their intake of water and avoid being outdoors as such heat waves are associated with health risks. He said:
<blockquote>
Anyone can be affected by sweltering temperatures; anyone can suffer a heat stroke in such temperatures, although those members of the public suffering from non-communicable diseases can be affected more than others. 
Everyone should take shelter and drink plenty of water, more than eight glasses per day.
The sweltering temperatures may also cause extreme dehydration and put many people at risk of deep vein thrombosis, which may result in a sudden and catastrophic collapse.
These temperatures may cause burst tyres, posing a danger to motorists. Motorists must take extreme measures to avoid overheating tyres which can cause road traffic accidents.

Heavy Rains Expected This Week - MSD

In a statement released yesterday, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) warned members of the public to drink sufficient amounts of water and to avoid direct sunlight, in the southern parts of the country. This is due to expected high temperatures and scattered thunderstorms which have been attributed to Tropical Cyclone Ava. The cyclone is still moving southeast of Madagascar. Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>Tropical Cyclone Ava is moving off the southeast of Madagascar and continues to dry out Zimbabwe and much of the SADC region. However, moisture is expected to gradually move into Zimbabwe from Botswana through Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South Provinces by Monday, January 8, 2018.
As such, we expect very hot conditions with isolated thunderstorms over both Matabeleland Provinces and parts of Bulawayo Metropolitan Province. The remainder of the country should be dry and very hot.</blockquote>

Met Department Warns Of Heatwave With Isolated Thunderstorms Due To Cyclone Ava

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) said that Zimbabwe experienced record breaking high temperatures. MSD forecaster James Ngoma yesterday said very hot temperatures were recorded in Nyanga, where they topped 38 degrees Celsius, up from the previous record of 32 degrees Celsius.
Ngoma said the high temperatures will continue today in Matabeleland North, all Mashonaland provinces, northern parts of the Midlands and Harare provinces. He also said that Kariba recorded the highest temperature of 42 degrees Celsius. Said Ngoma:
<blockquote>Chisengu and Mutare recorded 39 degrees Celsius and 40 degrees Celsius, up from 37 degrees Celsius and 39 degrees Celsius, respectively. Kariba recorded the highest temperature of 42 degrees Celsius, Victoria Falls 40, Great Zimbabwe 29, Vumba 35, Harare 35, Bulawayo 35, Gweru 35, Mutare 40, Lupane, 42, Gwanda 41 and Marondera 39 degrees Celsius. Bindura recorded 39, Masvingo 39 and Kwekwe 38 degrees Celsius.
Today, (Wednesday), high temperatures will continue to be experienced in Matabeleland North, all Mashonaland provinces, northern parts of the Midlands and Harare provinces. The daytime temperatures will be cooler than late. We therefore advise the public to take extra precautions in ensuring that the elderly and young children are kept well hydrated through adequate intake of water. If one needs to be out in the direct sun, please carry an umbrella or wear a wide-brimmed hat. Those in malaria-prone areas are also advised to utilise the necessary preventative measures as mosquitoes proliferate during this season, especially near bodies that can hold stagnant water such as dams, swimming pools and even small containers. Note that mosquitoes only require an inch of standing water to breed,</blockquote>

Heatwave affects Zimbabwe

In a statement released yesterday, the Meteorological Department has warned that Zimbabwe will experience near record-breaking high temperatures today and tomorrow.
Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>The MSD wishes to advise the public of very hot weather to be expected on Tuesday 17 October 2017. These near record-breaking high temperatures will be experienced throughout the whole country, with the low-lying areas such as the Zambezi and Limpopo valleys forecast to go as high as 43 degrees Celcius. 
The Department strongly advises against extended exposure to direct sunlight. As such, the usual health-related protection measures should be maximised.
Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day between 11am to 3pm, avoid strenuous outdoor activity such as sport or gardening or do this during cooler times of the day, if you must go out, stay in the shade and wear a hat and loose-fitting cotton clothes. If you are outside, take plenty of water with you, do not leave babies or children alone in a parked car with windows closed, take cool (not cold) showers or baths and splash yourself several times a day with cold water, especially your face and the back of your neck and for those with breathing problems, keep inhalers nearby.</blockquote>

Zim to experience near record-breaking high temperatures: Met Dept

Zimbabweans should brace themselves for more scorching temperatures as the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Met_Department">Met Department</a>  warns that the ongoing heat wave will persist.  Temperatures are expected to go range from 33 degreees to 43 degrees countrywide.  Rainfall is also expected, but the Met Department is not optimistic about the amount.
The department also warned people about the possibility of heavy rains and and violent storms in a statement which said:
it is also important to note that the combination of this moisture together with heat can trigger violet storms and is usually accompanied by hail and damaging winds.

No respite in sight as heat wave expected to continue

The Department of Meteorological Services has warned people to take precautionary measures against the current heat wave, which has seen daytime temperatures searing to about 37 degrees Celsius in areas such as <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Victoria_Falls">Victoria Falls</a>, Masvingo, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Kariba">Kariba</a>, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Kadoma">Kadoma</a> and <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Bulawayo">Bulawayo</a>.
 The Met Department said the temperatures were likely to continue rising, although Matabeleland South and North provinces, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Masvingo">Masvingo</a>, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Midlands_Province">Midlands</a> and <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Manicaland_Province">Manicaland</a> are expected to be partly cloudy today. In a statement the department said,
<blockquote>Consequently, the following precautionary measures are recommended as a way of protection against the adverse weather conditions; drinking lots of fluids, particularly water, avoiding prolonged stay in the sun, avoiding outdoor activities between 11:30am and 3pm, protecting yourselves from the sun by using umbrellas and wide-brimmed hats and the danger is extremely high for a runaway fires.</blockquote>
