Half of the boreholes in Harare’s western and northern districts are contaminated with human waste, the City of Harare epidemiology and disease control officer, Dr Michael Vere, has said.
Harare’s western district covers suburbs such as Highfield, Glen Norah, Glen View, Mbare, Dzivaresekwa, Budiriro, Kuwadzana and Kambuzuma.
The northern district covers Borrowdale, Glen Lorne, Glenwood Park, Newlands, Mabelreign, Highlands, Mabvuku, Tafara, Hatcliffe and Waterfalls.
Vere told <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/50pc-harare-boreholes-unsafe">The Sunday Mail</a> that water samples from boreholes in these areas showed traces of E. coli bacteria, which can cause water-borne diseases like typhoid and cholera.
Harare residents heavily rely on boreholes due to erratic municipal water supply. Said Vere:
<blockquote>
As Harare City Council, we routinely do water quality monitoring in targeted areas where there will be cases of cholera and typhoid.
Through our monitoring programme, we have found out that 50 per cent of boreholes in the western and northern districts are contaminated with sewer and human waste.

The discovery comes at a time when Harare was battling to contain a cholera outbreak directly linked to water shortages.
Vere said Harare and Chitungwiza require 1 200 megalitres of potable water a day but current water production is around 300 megalitres, a quarter of what is needed. He said:
<blockquote>
Harare and surrounding areas like Chitungwiza need about 1 200 megalitres of water per day, but we are only able to produce 300 megalitres per day.
We have, however, decommissioned a few boreholes but not all of them because of the water challenges we are having in Harare.

To make the borehole water safe for human consumption, the local authority is doing inline chlorination where it puts chlorine in the boreholes so that the water gets chlorinated.
Medical and Dental Private Practitioners of Zimbabwe Association president Dr Johannes Marisa said there was a need to replace Harare’s water and sewer pipes.
Harare Residents Trust executive director, Precious Shumba, said underground water and sewer pipes need to be upgraded to cope with a ballooning population. He said:

They are rusty, sand-blocked and leaking in most weak areas resulting in underground water being heavily polluted.
The observations and findings of the City Health Department on the contamination of 50 per cent of borehole water are on point. They reflect the real situation on the ground.
The sizes of the pipes need to be upgraded to reflect the increase in population and the illegal settlements.
Plugging the leakages and illegal connections along the water distribution network is the first step in increasing the amount of water reaching houses connected to the water supply system.

In 2021, it was reported that 62% of Harare’s treated water was going to waste or was being used without being paid for.

Half Of Harare's Boreholes Contaminated

A power outage at Morton Jaffray waterworks on Monday afternoon affected the pumping of water to Harare residents at a time when Zimbabwe’s capital is battling a cholera outbreak.
In a statement released on Monday night, the City of Harare’s spokesperson Stanley Gama also revealed that Morton Jaffray’s alternative and dedicated Norton feeder line, which was lost over a month ago, is yet to be restored. Read the statement:

Morton Jaffray experienced a power failure at 1430hrs today and as of 2130hrs, electricity was yet to be restored.
This has affected the pumping of water to residents. ZESA technicians have indicated that there might be a problem with the Parkridge Sub Station feeder and are working to restore the power.
Morton Jaffray’s alternative and dedicated Norton feeder line was lost on 17 October because of the storm that hit most parts of the country. ZESA is still to restore the dedicated line.
As a result of the power failure at Morton Jaffray, most of the city has no water. Morton Jaffray will resume pumping water to the city as soon as power is restored. In the meantime, we urge residents to use water sparingly.

Last week, Harare deputy mayor Kudzai Kadzombe said that Harare needs 1200 mega litres for residents to get water daily but has a production capacity of 600ML.
Most of the time, the city produces 300ML which it shares with Ruwa, Norton, Epworth and Chitungwiza.
The City of Harare obtains its water supply from four dams; Lake Chivero, Lake Manyame, Harava Dam and Prince Edward Dam (which are also in the Manyame Catchment area and downstream of the City of Harare).
It is expected that when Kunzvi Dam located in Mashonaland East Province, is completed, Harare will get a cleaner water source and reduce the water treatment costs.

Harare's Water Crisis Worsens As Power Outage Hits Morton Jaffray Waterworks

The City of Harare has resumed water production two days after shutting down its water treatment plants citing a shortage of Aluminium Sulphate.
On Friday, 10 February, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/harare-city-announces-imminent-shutdown-of-water-production/">Harare City Council suspended water production</a> due to “critically low stocks of aluminium sulphate” which affected all parts of the city.
In a notice issued this Sunday, the local authority said it had received some aluminium sulphate from its supplier and had started treating water and pumping water. Reads the notice:
<blockquote>
We would like to notify the public that we have received some aluminium sulphate from our supplier and have started treating water and pumping water.
The water however remains low with one pump coming to Warren Control and channelled to Letombo. The other medium pump is going to the western suburbs.
We urge members of the public to use available water sparingly and be patient while Council addresses the water chemicals situation.

City Of Harare Resumes Water Treatment And Pumping

The Harare City Council has advised residents that the current electricity crisis in the country has affected the local authority’s capacity to supply water to residents within the scheduled water rationing scheme.
Load shedding has intensified in the past month with consumers going for at least 18 hours a day without electricity.
The power utility, Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), is currently generating around 500MW against a peak demand of 2 200MW.
The electricity crisis has been attributed to recurrent breakdowns at the Hwange Thermal Power Station as well as receding water levels at Kariba Dam which supplies water for power generation to Zimbabwe’s only reliable power plant, the Kariba South power station.
In a post on its official social media handle on Monday, the City of Harare said the power cuts have negatively affected the pumping of water to residents. It said:

The City of Harare wishes to advise all the residents and other stakeholders that the incessant power cuts have affected the scheduled water rationing scheme.
Some parts of the city which receive water through a series of pumping will be greatly affected. Any inconvenience caused is sincerely regretted.

ZimLive reported a source at Town House as saying the situation is dire as operations at the Morton Jaffrey treatment plant have virtually stalled.
Harare Residents Trust Director Precious Shumba said that water challenges in Harare’s suburbs started long before the current electricity crisis. Said Shumba:

Electricity challenges have worsened the situation but the root cause of inadequate water supplies is the ageing underground water infrastructure, poor prioritisation of water provision and shortage of water treatment chemicals due to the unavailability of foreign currency.
Most suburbs have been experiencing water shortages for several months now, even before the electricity supplies worsened.

Load Shedding Has Disrupted Pumping Of Water, Says Harare Council

The City of Harare (CoH) has said the water supply situation is not expected to improve before the 22nd of November 2022 owing to inconsistent deliveries of water treatment chemicals.
The majority of suburbs in Harare have been getting intermittent water supplies of late, with residents going for days without the precious liquid. In a statement, the Harare City Council said:

We would like to notify residents and ratepayers that our water production remains suppressed at around 278Ml/day (78 Prince Edward and 200 Morton Jaffray) against an available capacity of 528Ml/day owing to inconsistent deliveries of locally sourced liquid aluminium sulphate and its imported granular substitute.
Chemical stock levels to date can sustain the current production until the next delivery of granular aluminium sulphate expected on November 22 this year.
As a result of this reduced level of production the water supply coverage around the City has been severely affected.
All efforts are being made to work out a sustainable solution to the problems. 
Residents are implored to use availed supplies conservatively.
All inconveniences are sincerely regretted.

Norton MP, Temba Mliswa (Independent), has blamed the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo, for Harare’s current water challenges.
Wate taps ran dry in Harare for more than two days last week. While the precious liquid is now available in some suburbs, the water supply is erratic.
The Harare City Council attributed the water crisis to a lack of water treatment chemicals at the Morton Jaffray and Prince Edward water works.
Posting on Twitter, Mliswa accused Moyo of holding onto nearly $2 billion in devolution funds allocated to Harare by Treasury while the city fails to buy water treatment chemicals. Said Mliswa:
<blockquote>
It is saddening to notice that the Local Government minister can watch the waterworks of our country’s capital completely shut down without showing much concern.
Here is a minister who is clinging on to devolution funds, and in the process, incapacitating Harare City’s crucial services like water treatment thereby exposing millions of residents to diseases.
This is the same man who corruptly pushed for the purchase and installation of water pumps. The big question is, what is the purpose of water pumps when you don’t have water?
A government of the people cannot afford to stand and watch while July is running riot exposing millions of people to diseases. This madness needs to be stopped.

Mliswa Blames July Moyo For Harare's Water Crisis

Harare mayor Jacob Mafume (CCC) says the city requires between US$800 million and US$1 billion to provide adequate water for all its inhabitants and satellite towns which include Norton and Chitungwiza.
Mafume said the city’s water reticulation system was installed over half a century ago and now needs to be upgraded.
Speaking soon after touring Harare City Council’s Morton Jaffray and Warren Control Waterworks on Wednesday, Mafume said:
<blockquote>
At the moment, we have an installed capacity of 620 megalitres (ML) and we are processing about 320ML. We have to go to 450 (ML) towards the end of the year.
But if we are able to put about 550ML into the pumping system, every resident will get water four days per week.
To be able to feed the Greater Harare, we need to revamp our water system. Morton Jaffray is an old plant built in the 1950s.
We need a whole new water system that is able to cater for three million-plus people.

Mafume said the City of Harare intends to install prepaid meters to ensure that all properties are billed and pay for water consumption.
However, residents’ associations and human rights groups say pre-paid meters will leave the poor without access to potable water and cause water-borne diseases.

Harare Requires US$800 Million To Upgrade Water Infrastructure

Women in Mabvuku and Tafara, two high-density suburbs to the East of Harare CBD, are vulnerable to sexual exploitation due to continued water shortages.
This was revealed by participants at a Water Dialogue Forum held in Mabvuku on Monday.
Women who attended the forum alleged those truck drivers who deliver water bowsers in the suburbs have openly been demanding sex for water. One of the attendees said:
<blockquote>The drivers and volunteers of water bowsers are openly asking for sex in order to supply us with water, we refused and are no longer supplying our section with water.
The water situation has not spared even the young women who are giving in to the demands of the volunteer workers distributing water.
The water distribution has increased vulnerabilities among women as they come as late as 7 pm distributing water in Mabvuku.</blockquote>
The event was jointly organised by the Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA), Community Water Alliance (CWA) and Women and Law Southern Africa (WLSA).
During the forum, CHRA called for the immediate removal of the Chemplex Corporation’s monopoly of supplying water treatment chemicals to local authorities.
They argued that the monopoly has resulted in the disruption of water supply in the city due to lack of capacity to supply water treatment chemicals.

Water Crisis: Mabvuku-Tafara Women Vulnerable To Sexual Exploitation

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare_City_Council" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Harare City Council</a> will shut down part of its water treatment plant, Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Plant this Thursday.
The partial shutdown will be in effect from today from (1600hrs) to tomorrow (Friday 1 May 2020) (1800hrs).
The shutdown will, however, not affect the pumping to Lonchivar Water Reservoirs that supply water to the western suburbs.
Western suburbs are the high-density residential areas such as Dzivarasekwa, Kuwadzana, Mufakose, Warren Park and Glen View.
The local authority said the shutdown is to allow for the installation of a pump at Warren Control Pump Station.
This is to match the improved water delivery capacity that is now averaging 300 million litres a day.
Other outstanding works will be carried out during the shutdown.

Morton Jaffray In Partial Shutdown

The government has availed US$9,3 million for urgent works at Manyame and Warren Control Pump Station to deal with the water crisis bedevilling Harare.
Information Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Monica_Mutsvangwa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Monica Mutsvangwa</a> told reporters on Tuesday that an assessment carries at Harare’s water reservoirs showed that the raw water quality at Lake Manyame was better than at Lake Chivero. She said:
<blockquote>Treasury avails US$9,3 million for urgent works at Manyame and Warren Control Pump Station, which are to be completed in two months.
Cabinet concurs that pumping water from Lake Manyame reduces the usage of aluminium sulphate by 26,8 per cent. This will consequently reduce the cost of treating water as aluminium sulphate is the main chemical.</blockquote>
