The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a tragic road traffic accident that occurred on Saturday, 15 January, at the 156-kilometre peg along the Harare-Masvingo Road in Chivhu.
In a statement released on Sunday evening, the ZRP revealed that two people lost their lives, while 15 others sustained varying degrees of injury.
The incident occurred when the rear tyre of a Nissan Caravan Kombi, which was carrying 17 passengers, burst.
The kombi veered off the road before overturning and landing on its roof.
The impact of the crash led to the death of two people, and their bodies were transported to Chivhu General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
The 15 injured passengers were also taken to the same hospital for medical treatment, where they were admitted for further care.

A magistrate employed by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) was recently fined US$400 or sentenced to five months in prison for culpable homicide following a fatal road accident.
The court heard that on 22 November 2023, the magistrate, Makunde Timeon Tavengwa, 46, was driving a Nissan X-Trail along the Harare-Masvingo Road when he struck Misheck Makuvire, a school pupil crossing the road.
The child died on the spot from head injuries.
Investigations revealed that the accident occurred in broad daylight on a wide, tarred road.
The court ruled that Tavengwa was negligent, as he failed to keep a proper lookout and was speeding.

A magistrate was fined $400 for causing a deadly accident that killed a schoolboy. The magistrate, Makunde Timeon Tavengwa, hit the boy while driving along a road. The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development has announced plans to close portions of Harare-Masvingo road, Chitungwiza road and High Glen Road at Mbudzi roundabout with effect from the 18th of this month. The ministry is spearheading the construction of an interchange. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the ministry said the roads shall be closed for a period of one and half years and the motoring public shall be using the diversion routes, Malvin Road, Forbes Road, HopelyRoad, and Stoneridge Road. The portions of the roads hereunder shall be closed for a period of one and half years and the motoring public shall be using diversion route, Malvin Road, Forbes Road. Roads constituting the four legs of roads into Mbudzi traffic circle for a distance 1.5 kilometres long from the centre line of the traffic circle on all four legs. A portion of Chitungwiza road 1.5 kilometres after the traffic circle going to Chitungwiza. A portion of High Glen Road 1.5 kilometres after the traffic circle going to High Glen.
The closure of portions of these roads is with effect from 18 September 2022 for a period of one and half years. Motorists are urged to be patient during the construction period.

Portions Of Roads At Mbudzi Roundabout Closed For One And Half Years

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> has reported that five people died on the spot when a Nissan Note collided with a Scania truck along the Harare – Masvingo Highway on Saturday evening. In a report seen by Pindula News, the police said the names of the deceased would be released in due course. The ZRP reports a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at the 33km peg along the Harare-Masvingo Road on 06/08/22 at around 1520 hours. A motorist, who was driving a Nissan Note vehicle with five passengers on board towards Harare, collided head-on with a Scania rigid truck which had no passengers. Five people, including the driver of the Nissan Note, died on the spot, while one passenger sustained severe injuries. Names of the victims will be released in due course.

Police and traffic authorities have always been urging motorists and members of the public to be more cautious especially during holidays when the country has perennially recorded high cases of road accidents.
Police say most of the accidents are caused by human error as drivers speed or will be drunk.
