President Emmerson Mnangagwa was on Friday conferred with the Freedom of the City by the Gweru City Council.
The conferment is the highest civic honour a council can bestow on a prominent man or woman for meritorious service, either of a national or local character, reported <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/gweru-confers-president-with-freedom-of-city/">the Chronicle</a>.
The event was attended by several senior Government officials, including Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri, and the Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda.
After unveiling the plaque, Mnangagwa headed for the Town House where he attended the City of Gweru special full council meeting.
The meeting was conducted at the Civic Centre grounds to accommodate all the people who came to witness the event.
Gweru mayor Councillor Hamutendi Kombayi welcomed the members to the special full council meeting.
Acting town clerk Livingstone Churu read the notice convening the special council meeting. He said:

At a meeting of the Council, held in the Council Chamber 696 Ordinary Council meeting held in the Mayor’s parlour, Municipal offices, Civic Centre Gweru on Monday, November 28 2022, it was resolved in pursuance of the provision of paragraph 52, of the second schedule of the Urban Councils Act (Chapter 29:15).
That the Mayor, Councillors and Aldermen, on behalf of the citizens of the City of Gweru, do confer the First Honorary Freedom of the City of Gweru Upon His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Head of State and Government, The Commander-In-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.
… His bravery in the execution of the war of liberation saw him spending ten years in the colonial regime prisons and his release from prison that occurred in Zimbabwe and Zambia. As a person born in the Midlands Province, and Gweru being the capital of the Midlands Province we will forever cherish and honour the bravery to fight for independence and economic development.

Gweru, originally known as Gwelo during the colonial era, and known as iKwelo “The Steep Place” by the Ndebele people, is near the geographical centre of Zimbabwe and the capital of Midlands Province.

Gweru Confers Mnangagwa With Freedom Of City

Hamutendi Kombayi has bounced back as Gweru mayor following his triumph over Nelson Chamisa’s ally, Martin Chivhoko in an election held Tuesday.
Kombayi who belongs to the MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora was fired as the mayor of Gweru in 2017 by the then Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere.
He replaces Josiah Makombe who was recalled as councillor by the MDC-T late last year.
Kombayi, a well-known businessman in Gweru, got 11 votes against four won by Chivhoko from Chamisa’s MDC Alliance.
In a brief speech after the election, the mayor called for unity in the deeply divided Gweru City Council. He said:

I am urging unity amongst us councillors for the development of our city. What is core to our mission as councillors, is to bring development to our city.
</blockquote>
Kombayi is the son of late popular Gweru businessman and politician, Patrick Kombayi.

The late former Gweru mayor, Patrick Kombayi’s son Hamutendi yesterday told NewsDay that his family was bitter that President Robert Mugabe decided to pardon Kizito Chivamba who shot his father and even honoured him a hero despite the “serious crime that they committed”.
Said Hamutendi:
<blockquote>As a family, we say may his (Chivamba’s) soul rest in peace, but it still hurts us that our late father had to suffer till death from injuries sustained from the shootings orchestrated by the same people, who continued to be rewarded within the Zanu PF rank and file.</blockquote>

Kombayi's son responds to Chivamba's provincial hero's status despite the serious crime he committed

Former Gweru mayor, Hamutendi Kombayi, who was recently fired by Local Government minister, Saviour Kasukuwere will appeal against the decision at the High Court.
Kombayi together with Ward 4 councillor, Kenneth Sithole were fired by Kasukuwere on charges of abuse of office among others, but reinstated 10 councillors from MDC-T and three from Zanu PF. Kombayi’s charges included authorising payment of $1 875 towards MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai’s stay at Antelope Park and refusing to surrender his mayoral vehicle, a Mazda BT50, to council after he was suspended. Kombayi’s lawyer, Brian Dube told Southern Eye that they were preparing papers to make an appeal for review of the decision made by the tribunal against Kombayi.
