A 23-year-old man got capped at the Midlands State University on Friday by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on behalf of his mother who died in September this year.
Brian Banda’s mother, Patricia Banda, was graduating posthumously with a first-class degree in Bachelor of Commerce Information Systems Management.
MSU Chaplain Reverend Menson Mpofu requested for a moment of silence to remember Banda. He said:

Let us take a minute of silence as we observe one of our own, Mrs Patricia Banda, who died on September 2. She was supposed to graduate with others today. May her soul rest in peace.
</blockquote>
When his mother’s name was called for capping by President Mnangagwa, Brian walked to the podium with his mother’s gown and cap in hand and was capped on his late mother’s behalf.
In an interview with State media later, Brian said the day was an emotional one for the family. He said:

I am still in pain. It could have been my mum’s big day today, celebrating with others the fruits of her hard work but God had other plans, she is no more and I am here standing in for her.
I left my father (Simbarashe Banda) and the other family members at home. Dad actually said he can’t be here because of emotions but I decided to come and stand in for my mother.

Brian is a university student who is pursuing an Accounting degree at Great Zimbabwe University.
He vowed to continue with his studies until he attains a professorship as a tribute to his mother.
Brian said his mother died following a short illness at the age of 38.

Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) students have launched an online petition in a bid to force the institution to reverse its decision to hold the graduation ceremony virtually.
ZOU is scheduled to hold its graduation ceremony on 7 December at its Hatcliffe campus in Harare.
However, only a small number of graduands will physically attend the ceremony while others will follow proceedings virtually and this has not gone down well with the students.
In the petition, the students demanded to be allowed to graduate in person. Reads the petition:

We need a united physical graduation for all ZOU graduands (no separation) for whatever reason, ZOU organized graduation at different venues, that is, Belvedere and Hatcliff campuses.
As students we do not agree with that, we do not want to be separated and we do not want virtual graduation.
Graduation day is more important than even acquiring the certificate itself to us as students.
It is our day hence we need to graduate together like what we did when we were oriented during the start of our degree program.
</blockquote>
ZOU Corporate Communications Director, Thomas Mahundi told CITE’s <a href="https://cite.org.zw/author/senzeni/">Senzeni Ncube</a> that this year’s venue, the Hatcliffe site is under construction hence it accommodates small numbers. Said Mahundi:

The Zimbabwe Open University Management would like to inform its valued stakeholders the class of 2022 that your university remains committed to addressing the students’ plight.
In view of this, management wishes to bring to your attention once again that this year’s main graduation venue, the Hatcliffe site is under construction hence it accommodates a small number.

He added that the rest of the graduands will graduate virtually at their regional campus venues, following proceedings live on ZTV, ZOU’s Facebook page, and link via the ZOU website.

ZOU Students Launch Online Petition Against Virtual Graduation Ceremony

The University of Zimbabwe has postponed the Graduation Ceremony that was slated for the 13th of September this year to the 20th of September. The Press statement indicated that the venue remained unchanged. The notice also said that admission tickets issued to graduands, VVIPs and VIPs remained valid. See the press release if full below.

Midlands State University (MSU) has announced that it will now hold its graduation on Saturday 2 December after postponing it twice.
MSU postponed its graduation ceremony for the second time as it clashed with the swearing in ceremony of President Emmerson Mnangagwa which was held last week on Friday. The statement published on MSU’s website reads:
<blockquote>Midlands State University wishes to advise its valued stakeholders and graduands that the 2017. Graduation Ceremony will now be held on Saturday, 2nd December 2017 at the Gweru Main Campus. Graduands and guests are required to be seated by 0800hours. Graduands are encouraged to collect their invitation cards at the Gweru Main Campus, from their respective Faculty Offices. Those who are unable to collect their invitation cards by Thursday, the 30th of November 2017, can collect them on the day of Rehearsals, which is Friday, 01 December 2017. Rehearsals will commence at 1400 hours at the Gweru Main Campus.</blockquote>

MSU 2017 graduation ceremony on this weekend

Midlands State University (MSU) will hold its graduation ceremony on Friday 24 November contrary to reports that it had been cancelled.
In a notice yesterday, MSU said the graduation ceremony will be held at the institution’s main campus in Senga, Gweru. The notice reads:
<blockquote>Midlands State University wishes to advise its valued stakeholders and graduands that the 2017 graduation ceremony will be held on Friday at the Gweru Main Campus. Graduands and guests are required to be seated by 9am. Graduands who are unable to collect their invitation cards by Wednesday, November 22, can collect them on the rehearsals day, Thursday, November 23. Rehearsals will commence at 1400 hours at the Gweru Main Campus. Please note, all graduands are strongly encouraged to attend the rehearsals in order to participate in the ceremony.</blockquote>

UZ Graduation Ceremony on this Friday

The University of Zimbabwe will hold its graduation ceremony this Friday, 15 September.

A total of 180 technicians &amp; 578 teachers graduated today at the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic in Gwanda. Higher Education Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo was the guest of honor. Below are pictures of the ceremony:

Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic graduation in pictures

Harare Polytechnic graduands’ parents were denied entry into the premises, amid claims that the Guest of Honor, Higher Education Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo had ordered that no one should be allowed in, during his speech.
One of the parents who spoke to Capitalk FM on condition of anonymity said:
<blockquote>Vakadii kungotiudza kuti tisauye kuno vana vacho vagraduate tisipo pane kutifambisa all the way only to deny me entry to witness my child graduating. (Why didn’t they just tell us not to come and let our children graduate on their own rather than make us travel all the way only to deny me entry to witness my child graduating.).</blockquote>
Efforts by Capitalk FM to get a from Harare Poly authorities were fruitless as the ceremony was still underway. The authorities only apologised for the issue and promised to give a full statement after the graduation ceremony.

Jonathan Moyo blamed after parents are denied entry into Harare Poly for graduation ceremony

Kuwadzana East legislator and <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Wiki/Movement_for_Democratic_Change_-_Tsvangirayi_(MDC-T)">MDC-T</a> deputy president, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Nelson_Chamisa">Nelson Chamisa</a> is set to graduate from the Living Waters Theological Seminary as a pastor today. After his graduation, he will become a master of religion.
Chamisa studied pastoral and theological studies for three years and will be capped at the Tynwald Seminary campus in Harare. The seminary has produced some of the country’s popular pastors which include; <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/United_Family_International_Church">United Family International Church</a> leader, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmanuel_Makandiwa">Emmanuel Makandiwa</a>, Heartfelt International Ministries leader, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Tavonga_Vutabwashe">Tavonga Vutabwashe </a>and gospel musician, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Charles_Charamba">Charles Charamba</a> among many others.

Chamisa to graduate as a pastor today

Addressing graduands and delegates at <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Morgan_Zintec_Teachers_College">Morgan ZINTEC</a>’s 39th graduation ceremony, Higher Education Minister Professor <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Jonathan_Moyo">Jonathan Moyo</a> said universities, teachers’ colleges, polytechnics and industrial training centres should desist from excluding students from writing examinations especially when they have attended lectures.
He also said vice chancellors and principals should manage the payment of tuition fees rationally through the use of methods such as withholding results instead of barring students from writing examinations,
<blockquote>In the first place, why do higher and tertiary institutions allow fees defaulters to attend lectures, submit assignments and write tests only to stop them from writing examinations at the end of the year or semester? The ministry encourages all institutions to allow students to sit for examinations while appropriate payment arrangements are worked out between the institution and the students.</blockquote>
Moyo congratulated the 872 teachers who graduated with Diploma of Education with the institution recording its highest ever pass rate which stood at 99 percent.
