Eleven (11) Grade 7 learners at Kana Primary School in Lupane reportedly failed to write scheduled Zimbabwe School Examination Council (ZIMSEC) exams after the school head turned them away due to unpaid tuition fees.
<a href="https://cite.org.zw/headmaster-blocks-grade-7-candidates-from-writing-exams-over-fees/">CITE</a> reported sources at the school as saying the learners failed to write the exams after the headmaster “evicted” them from the school grounds. Said the source:
<blockquote>
On Monday, we learned that 11 learners in Grade 7 did not sit for their examinations after they were sent away for not paying school fees.
We didn’t have the energy to ask the headmaster, but we knew that he broke the government’s policy.
</blockquote>
However, when contacted by CITE, the school headmaster, Thomas Manda denied these allegations and insisted no learners were sent away. He said:
<blockquote>
Right now, all the learners are writing their exams, no one chased away the learners. I have been writing notices to parents reminding them about the payment of fees.
At the moment I am now compiling the names of the village heads where these parents live so that they can take action.
</blockquote>
Manda said there are some individuals who are peddling falsehoods to tarnish the school’s reputation. He said:
<blockquote>
There is an Education Amendment Act where the President says we should deal with the parents and not the learners. Thus, this is the procedure we are taking.
Parents are like that, when you tell them you are taking legal channels, they become angry instead of coming to the school to speak to authorities.
</blockquote>
The headmaster conceded that some Grade 7 candidates were not writing examinations but stressed that it was not because they were barred by the school over tuition arrears. He said:
<blockquote>
Right now, the children are writing, but there are some who are absent, they absconded on their own, having thought of that by themselves. But some parents didn’t come to us, they just became angry.
</blockquote>
ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicky Dlamini told CITE that they had not received an official report that learners failed to write their grade seven examination at Kana Primary School. She added:

Once learners register for an examination, they must sit for that examination.
</blockquote>
Director of Communications and Advocacy in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Taungana Ndoro said:
<blockquote>
It is illegal to chase away a child from sitting for a ZIMSEC examination after they have paid their examination fees. That position has not changed.
</blockquote>
Arguably, Zimbabwean parents are notorious for not paying their children’s school fees and this forces school authorities to take drastic measures to ensure that parents fulfill their obligations.

School Head Blocks Grade 7 Candidates From Writing Exams Over Unpaid Tuition Fees

An 11-year-old boy from Masvingo, who was doing Grade 6 at Victoria Primary School scored nine units in the 2022 Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) Grade 7 final examinations.
This means that Noah Junior Marima will skip Grade 7 and automatically proceed to secondary school next year.
The boy’s father, Noah Marima, owns the state-of-the-art Junior Primary and Junior High boarding schools in Rhodene, a low-density suburb.
Noah Junior scored ones in Maths, Shona, Social Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, and Tech.
He got two units in English while in Physical Education and Arts he got 3 units.
Marima expressed satisfaction over his son’s performance and pledged to support him to be whatever he wants. He said:

I am elated with the achievement and as his father I don’t want to decide for him what he wants to do, I will allow him to choose his passion and my role will be to support him to chase his dreams.
My son has always shown traits of hard work and I think these are results of focus, hard work and commitment, I am very happy for him and his unique achievement gives me happiness as a father.

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) is yet to establish why the Grade Seven pass rate in 2022 was lower than that recorded in 2021 considering that there were far fewer disruptions.
In 2020 and 2021, learning was disrupted by several COVID-19-induced lockdowns while in 2022, learning activities were back to normal apart from some delays during the first term.
ZIMSEC on Wednesday released the Grade 7 results, with a 40. 09 percent pass rate, marginally below the 41.13 per cent pas rate of last year.
Girls, with a 43.66 percent pass rate, did a lot better than boys who had a 3622 per cent pass rate.
Speaking in Harare on Wednesday after the announcement of the 2022 Grade Seven public examination results, ZIMSEC board chair Professor Eddie Mwenje said:

The reasons are sometimes very difficult to establish until you do a deep analysis of the results which we do normally just to advise the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education on certain aspects.
Given that this year students received much more time for learning than in the previous year, they ought to have done better.

ZIMSEC director Lazarus Nembaware said continuous assessment learning activity (CALA) could be one of the factors. He said:
<blockquote>
It could be other reasons, which we will look into but as of now, we also think that candidates are still settling into the CALA component.
This is the second year in which CALA has been part and parcel of the examination system so it could be that and we will look into those areas more critically after the release of these results.
</blockquote>
ZIMSEC said it recorded a higher number of candidates writing the exam than did so last year. It said:
<blockquote>
A total of 343 169 candidates sat for the 2022 Grade Seven examinations as compared to 325 573 candidates who sat for the same examinations in 2021, showing a 5.4 percent increase in candidature, that is an additional 17 596 candidates.
