A Russian court fined Google two undecillion roubles (two followed by 36 zeroes) for restricting Russian state media channels on YouTube.
According to <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cdxvnwkl5kgo">BBC</a>, in dollar terms, the fine amounts to $20 decillion ($20,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000), far exceeding Google’s market value of $2 trillion and the world’s total GDP of $110 trillion.
The fine doubles every day it is not paid, leading to an astronomical total.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov admitted he “cannot even pronounce this number” but urged Google to address the issue.
The fine originated from complaints by 17 Russian media channels whose content was restricted on YouTube, starting in 2020 and escalating after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Google has not publicly commented on the fine and has ongoing legal matters in Russia.
This development marks the latest escalation in tensions between Russia and the US tech giant.
In May 2021, Russia’s media regulator, Roskomnadzor, accused Google of limiting YouTube access for Russian media outlets, including RT and Sputnik, while also alleging support for “illegal protest activity.”
Then, in July 2022, Russia imposed a fine of 21.1 billion roubles (£301 million) on Google for not restricting access to what it deemed “prohibited” material regarding the war in Ukraine and other content.
Press freedom in Russia is nearly non-existent, as independent news outlets and freedom of expression face severe restrictions.

In Russia, news is not free, and Google is having trouble there.

Russian Court Fines Google US$2 Decillion For Allegedly Limiting Russian Content On YouTube

Global online rental company Airbnb has appointed Zimbabwean Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/James_Manyika/">James Manyika</a> to its board, recognising his expertise in AI and its impact on society.
Manyika, currently a senior vice president at Google, holds two master’s degrees and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics from the University of Zimbabwe and Oxford University. Airbnb confirmed his appointment, with CEO Brian Chesky stating that Manyika had been advising the company since 2018. Chesky said in a statement:

He’s dedicated his career to exploring technology’s impact on society, and is one of the world’s leading experts in AI. He started advising Airbnb in 2018 and has been an essential thought partner to me for years.
It’s inevitable that AI will reshape society and have a profound impact on our business. With James joining our Board, we’ll continue to benefit from his guidance as we embark on the dawn of this new technological revolution.

On his appointment, Manyika, who will also chair the Board’s stakeholder committee, expressed his inspiration by Airbnb’s ability to bring people and cultures together globally. He said:

Currently, Manyika holds the position of Senior Vice President of Research, Technology, and Society at Google. Prior to joining Google, he had an extensive career at McKinsey spanning nearly three decades. At McKinsey, Manyika led the distinguished McKinsey Global Institute’s research on technology, the economy, and major global trends. He was also involved in researching global economic and technology trends and provided strategic guidance to leading high-tech companies on growth and innovation.
Manyika’s involvement extends beyond his work at Google and McKinsey. He serves on the board of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University and is an advisor on various advisory boards at prestigious institutions such as the University of Oxford, MIT, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and Stanford University.

Airbnb Appoints Zimbabwean AI Expert James Manyika To Its Board

Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent figure in the field of <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/07/06/full-text-artificial-intelligence-is-the-biggest-technology-we-have-ever-had-strive-masiyiwa/">artificial intelligence (AI)</a>, has resigned from his job at Google and expressed concerns about the potential dangers of AI.
Hinton, who is considered the godfather of AI, stated in a New York Times statement that he regrets his work in the field. He told the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65452940">BBC</a> that some of the dangers posed by AI chatbots are “quite scary.”

Right now, they’re not more intelligent than us, as far as I can tell. But I think they soon may be.
Right now, what we’re seeing is things like GPT-4 eclipses a person in the amount of general knowledge it has and it eclipses them by a long way. In terms of reasoning, it’s not as good, but it does already do simple reasoning.
And given the rate of progress, we expect things to get better quite fast. So we need to worry about that.

He expressed concerns about the potential of AI chatbots to exceed human knowledge and warned of the risks of “bad actors” using AI for malicious purposes. His groundbreaking work on deep learning and neural networks has paved the way for current AI systems like ChatGPT.

When asked about his concerns about the potential of AI chatbots, Dr Hinton referred to it as a worst-case scenario and a nightmare.

You can imagine, for example, some bad actor like [Russian President Vladimir] Putin decided to give robots the ability to create their own sub-goals.
</blockquote>
Dr Hinton cautioned that this could lead to the creation of sub-goals, such as the need for more power. He also noted that the intelligence created by AI is very different from human intelligence, as digital systems can have many copies of the same model of the world, which is not the case for biological systems like humans. He said:
<blockquote>
And all these copies can learn separately but share their knowledge instantly. So it’s as if you had 10,000 people and whenever one person learnt something, everybody automatically knew it. And that’s how these chatbots can know so much more than any one person.

Dr Hinton emphasised that he did not intend to criticise Google and praised the company for being responsible. He also stated that his positive comments about Google are more credible as he no longer works for the company.
In a statement, Google’s chief scientist Jeff Dean stated that the company is committed to a responsible approach to AI, continuously learning about emerging risks while also innovating boldly.

No Data, No Problem: This App Allows You To Browse News Without Data

Google has shared a behind-the-scenes video of how a team comprising engineers, artists, and others visited Zimbabwe to research and work on a <a href="https://www.google.com/doodles/celebrating-mbira">Mbira Google Doodle</a>.
If you visited the Google homepage today (21 May 2020) then you definitely encountered the Mbira Doodle. It’s a celebration of the Mbira instrument during <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Culture_Week">Zimbabwe’s Culture Week</a> begins. 
The Doodle plays versions of popular Mbira songs including Nhemamusasa and Chemutengure as it tells the story of a young girl who learns to play it.
As the story is told, you participate by trying your hand at playing the mbira in a mini-game of sorts. Using your mouse, you attempt to play the mbira instrument as the whole song plays. You’re scored on how many keys you press in sync.

Google has opened applications for the 2019 edition of the Google Africa Certifications Scholarships. William Florance, global head of developer training programmes at Google revealed that the developer training programme is available to applicants who are residents of any African country and at least 18 years of age when they submit applications. The training shall be delivered by Google’s partners: online education company <a href="https://www.pluralsight.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Pluralsight</a> and software start-up <a href="https://andela.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Andela</a>.
