<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Temba_Mliswa/">Temba Mliswa</a>, an independent legislator in Norton, has challenged Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa to respond to allegations made in Al Jazeera’s Gold Mafia investigative documentary.
The documentary series claims that the First Family and senior government officials are involved in gold and money laundering activities.
Mnangagwa has not commented on the issue, but Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa has said that the government is taking the allegations seriously and is investigating.

During an interview with Alpha Media Holdings chairman Trevor Ncube on the platform In Conversation with Trevor, Mliswa, Mliswa questioned why Ewan MacMillan and Simon Rudland were not arrested. He urged Mnangagwa to respond to the allegations directly. Mliswa said:

The police have not arrested Ewan MacMillan and Simon Rudland because they had the right documentation from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe as they were flying gold above board with Emirates coming back with cash and it is documented. What wrong have they done?
Most of these people saw an opportunity as business people, they are capitalists and they seized an opportunity. The question is on leadership. They have done nothing wrong, they are making their own money, their duty is to make money and any opportunity they will seize on it they are exonerated.
The number one citizen, the President has got to respond to these issues and (that’s my) advice, it’s either he takes it or he does not and advice does not have to go through one to nine.

Temba Mliswa questioned why President Mnangagwa had not responded to the allegations in the Gold Mafia documentary. He also criticized the presidential spokesperson, George Charamba, for not doing a good job in responding to the issue.
Mliswa was expelled from the Zanu PF party in 2015 over allegations of various charges, including insubordination and undermining the party’s authority.

Mliswa Challenges Mnangagwa On Gold Mafia Allegations

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has directed financial institutions to unfreeze all the accounts and other financial assets belonging to individuals who were implicated in alleged smuggling and money laundering by Al Jazeera’s documentary series that was premiered in March and April this year.
The central bank said it froze the assets of Cleopas Chidodo, David Chirozvi, Mehlululi Dube and Fredrick Kunaka, who told the undercover Al Jazeera reporters that they accepted money to assist a gold-smuggling and money laundering.
The four men, all Zimbabwean nationals, made the statements in a four-part documentary series called “Gold Mafia”.
<a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/uebert-angel-rudland-accounts-frozen/">State media reports</a> in early April indicated that the RBZ had directed that accounts belonging to Ewan McMillan, Kamlesh Pattni, Uebert Angel, and Simon Rudland should be frozen.
But in a statement issued on Monday, 15 May 2023, FIU director Oliver Chiperesa said the Unit had not identified transactions linked to money laundering connected to the allegations in the Al Jazeera documentary. Reads the statement:

Following the broadcast of Al Jazeera’s documentary series titled “The Gold Mafia,” the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) issued a directive on 31 March 2023 directing financial institutions to identify, freeze and report bank accounts and other financial assets owned and/or controlled by individuals who were alleged to have played key roles in alleged acts of money laundering and other financial crimes.
The FIU exercised its temporary freezing powers to ensure that any illicit proceeds connected to the allegations in the documentary would not be dissipated or disposed of by the persons concerned and prejudice potential future investigations.
The FIU, working in close collaboration with law enforcement agencies, has since concluded its analysis of the four episodes of the Al Jazeera documentary and has also analyzed the financial assets and transactions of the persons implicated in the documentary and has determined that there is no good cause for the freezing order to remain in place.
The FIU has not identified transactions/assets linked to money laundering and related financial crime connected to the allegations in the Al Jazeera documentary.
In view of the above, the FIU has directed financial institutions to unfreeze all the accounts and other financial assets that had been frozen pursuant to the directive of 31 March 2023.
The unfreezing action is without prejudice to any further investigations that law enforcement agencies may wish to commence or continue against any of the persons involved.
Some of the allegations in the documentary relate to money laundering and financial crimes alleged to have taken place outside Zimbabwe’s borders.
The FIU, if so requested, stands ready and is indeed mandated to cooperate with any international investigations against any of the persons or entities mentioned in the documentary.

Gold Mafia: RBZ Says There Is No Evidence Supporting Al Jazeera Allegations

The opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) has criticised Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda for rejecting a proposal by the Public Accounts and the Budget, Finance, and Economic Development committees to investigate allegations raised in the Gold Mafia documentary which was premiered by Al Jazeera recently.
In a statement, CCC said Mudenda’s decision raises serious doubts about the Government’s commitment to accountability and transparency. CCC said:

We strongly denounce the decision made by the Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda to prevent the parliamentary committees from investigating the overwhelming evidence presented in the #GoldMafia documentary.
The evidence suggests that there is massive corruption, looting, money laundering, and the smuggling of gold by the political elites and their close allies.
The Speaker’s decision to prevent proper investigation raises serious doubts about the regime’s commitment to accountability and transparency.
We demand swift action be taken to investigate the matter to ensure that those involved in such illegal activities are brought to justice.

Mudenda told the two parliamentary committees that Parliament should allow the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), the central bank and the Police to conduct the investigations.
He said in reaching the decision, he was guided by the South African Government’s decision to task specialised agencies with investigating the gold smuggling and money laundering allegations raised in the Gold Mafia documentary.

Gold Mafia: CCC Chides Mudenda For Refusing To Grant Investigation Authority To Committees

Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda has rejected a proposal by the Public Accounts and the Budget, Finance, and Economic Development committees to investigate allegations raised in the Gold Mafia documentary which was premiered by Al Jazeera recently.
In a memorandum addressed to the two parliamentary committees, Mudenda said Parliament should allow the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), the central bank and the Police to conduct the investigations.
He said in reaching the decision, he was guided by the South African Government’s decision to task specialised agencies with investigating the gold smuggling and money laundering allegations raised in the Gold Mafia documentary. Reads the memo:

I wish to state from the outset that the matter is serious and of national importance.
However, it is pertinent to note that the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission and the RBZ have already started processes to investigate the matter.
In that vein, it would be improper for Parliament to embark on an inquiry on a matter that other arms of the State are investigating.
In addition, the matters are of a complex nature and may require extraterritorial visits due to the alleged involvement of foreign players.
In that regard, it is prudent to leave the investigations to specialised agencies like ZACC, and the Police are better placed to investigate matters.
Parliament will continue to monitor the investigations and will carry out its oversight role when the specialised agencies have completed their investigation.
In addition, the Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development conducted an inquiry into Illicit Financial flows in the Mining Sector in the course of last year.
In reaching this decision I have also been guided by the stance taken by the South African Government which has deferred to specialised agencies regarding the same issues.

Gold Mafia: Speaker Of Parliament Refuses To Grant Investigation Authority To Committees

British parliamentarians have proposed the establishment of an International Anti-Corruption Court (IACC) to freeze billions of US dollars kept abroad by corrupt government officials, including ruling ZANU PF officials.
Lord Jonathan Oates accused ZANU PF of state capture and uncontrolled corruption, hindering Zimbabwe’s progress. He cited Al Jazeera’s investigative report, Gold Mafia, which reported alleged illicit financial flows involving President Emmerson Mnangagwa, his wife Auxillia, niece Henrietta Rushwaya, and Special Envoy Uebert Angel, a Zimbabwean-born British citizen.
The IACC proposal is part of amendments to the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Bill currently under consideration in the House of Lords. Oates said:

The ZANU-PF regime is mired in corruption, which has robbed the Zimbabwean people of what should be a bright economic future. Instead of serving the people, regime leaders, aided by corrupt businesspeople and a prosecutorial and judicial system entirely captured by the ruling party, loot the country at will.
Few of these kleptocrats keep their ill-gotten gains at home. Billions of dollars of stolen assets are laundered in a number of countries, including China, Hong Kong, Dubai, Singapore, Monaco, Switzerland, some states of the United States, UK overseas territories and, shamefully, London.
Recently, the Al Jazeera documentary ‘Gold Mafia’ secretly filmed Zimbabwe officials and business contacts conspiring to launder illicit funds. Those filmed included at least three British citizens—Angel, Rikki Doolan and Kamlesh Pattni—who made clear on camera their willingness to act corruptly.
While British authorities can act on crimes committed under UK jurisdiction, there is no international mechanism to prosecute kleptocrats and to seize and return their illicit funds. This gaping vacuum can be filled only by establishing an international anti-corruption court that can hold corrupt leaders and their co-conspirators accountable.

Oates suggested that an International Anti-Corruption Court could freeze and repatriate stolen assets held abroad by corrupt government officials. The court could also repurpose and repatriate the funds when they can reach the real victims.
Oates urged countries where laundered funds are held to join the court to facilitate the recovery of stolen assets. He also called for an investigation into Uebert Angel, Doolan, and Pattni after their alleged involvement in illicit financial flows was exposed in Al Jazeera’s Gold Mafia report.
Transparency International (TI) estimates that Zimbabwe loses US$1 billion to corruption annually. Tendai Biti, an opposition politician, believes that the funds could revive the country’s struggling healthcare system.
Baroness Patience Wheatcroft supports Oates’ proposal for an International Anti-Corruption Court (IACC) and refers to corrupt state leaders as “greedy financial war criminals.” Wheatcrost said kleptocrats have the impunity to act as they wish in their home countries as they control the police, prosecutors, and courts, causing significant damage to their countries.

UK Parliament Proposes International Anti-corruption Court To Freeze Corrupt Officials' Assets

Parliament has summoned Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube to address corruption allegations raised in Gold Mafia, an Al Jazeera documentary.
Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti raised the issue in the National Assembly, calling for a forensic audit of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe following the Gold Mafia. Biti said:

My point of national interest is directed to the Minister of Finance whom I’m begging that you make a ruling that he be summoned to this august house to address the issue of illicit financial flows.
Mr Speaker sir, 69% of our people are living in extreme poverty surviving on less than US$1,25 a day yet this country is extremely rich. We have 64 minerals including world deposits of lithium, gold platinum, diamonds and chrome. But we have nothing to show for it.
Billion dollars are being smuggled illegally through tobacco and smuggling. Can the Minister come before this house to lay out a roadmap of how he is going to deal with corruption including the Gold Mafia and illicit financial flows and a forensic audit of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.
Because we can’t suffer from the “resource curse”, that we’re rich but we’re poor because a few elite individuals have decided to steal from the people of this country.

Consequences of smuggling:
The “Gold Mafia” documentary by Al Jazeera alleged that Zimbabwe is losing billions of dollars annually through gold smuggling.  The government will not receive the taxes and royalties that it is entitled to, which can have a significant impact on the country’s finances.
Illicit financial activities can also undermine the mining sector by creating an uneven playing field for companies that operate legally. This can discourage legitimate mining companies from investing in the country, which can ultimately harm the sector’s growth and development.
The proceeds from illicit financial activities may be used to fund criminal activities or to enrich a small group of individuals at the expense of the wider population, exacerbating social and economic inequalities and undermining public trust in the government and institutions.
What are authorities saying?
The allegations made in the “Gold Mafia” documentary have not been fully corroborated by other sources, and the Zimbabwean government has denied the allegations. However, there have been other reports and allegations of gold smuggling and illicit financial activities in Zimbabwe. In 2019, the Zimbabwean government formed a task force to investigate allegations of gold smuggling and underreporting of gold sales by large mining companies. The task force reportedly uncovered evidence of gold smuggling and other illegal activities in the gold sector.
In addition, various international organizations, such as the United Nations and Global Witness, have reported on the issue of illicit financial flows and corruption in Zimbabwe’s mining sector. These reports have highlighted the need for greater transparency and accountability in the sector.

Parliament Summons Mthuli Ncube Over Corruption Allegations In Gold Mafia

An Al Jazeera investigative journalist who posed as a secretary to a fake Chinese gangster in the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Aljazeera_2023_Zimbabwe_Corruption_Documentary/">Gold Mafia series</a> has said President Emmerson Mnangagwa was <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2023/04/15/gold-mafia-uebert-angel-says-it-was-all-an-act-a-classified-national-intelligence-operation/">called by his</a> emissary <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Uebert_Angel/">Uebert Angel</a>, but the call was not recorded.
Mnangagwa allegedly offered a part of the Zambezi River shores for development and requested a one-on-one meeting with the team to finalize deals. An initial meeting with Mnangagwa was cancelled after the journalists refused to pay a $200 000 ‘facilitation fee’ to Angel. The journalist who posed as Miss Sin said:

This meeting is one of those I will never forget, one of my biggest regrets happens at this meeting. Ambassador Angel takes me away from the group, one on one and puts his finger to his lips to tell me to keep quiet, I did not have any recording devices on me because the other people on the team had them.
Sometimes we would change it up a bit, who is recording and who is not. Angel dials who he tells me is President Emmerson Mnangagwa, so I am seated in the booth and hearing him speak to the President.
A lot of it is in Shona but the President is talking about how we should do more than just the casino on the Victoria Falls, he says what about the Zambezi River and talks about how we should have a one-on-one meeting with him.

According to the documentary, President Mnangagwa’s wife Auxillia was recorded advising Uebert Angel to contact the President regarding the mode of transportation for smuggled gold.
Angel was a central figure who provided details and audio to the investigative team and has been cleared of suspicions. He claimed to be vetting possible investors before taking them to the President, according to his lawyer Lovemore Madhuku.

Al Jazeera Speaks On President Mnangagwa's Unrecorded Call From Uebert Angel

Cleopas Chidodo, the security manager of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ), has retracted the allegations he made about former First Lady Grace Mugabe in Al Jazeera’s Gold Mafia documentary.
In the documentary, Chidodo claimed that Mugabe had used her influential status to smuggle diamonds and ivory out of Zimbabwe without her late husband’s knowledge. However, in a video recording, Chidodo apologised to Mugabe and the former first family, stating that the allegations he made were false and retracting them in full. Watch the video below for more:

Watch: Chidodo Apologises To Mugabe Family Over Comments In Gold Mafia

Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has demanded that Al Jazeera apologises and retracts its documentary series titled ‘<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Aljazeera_2023_Zimbabwe_Corruption_Documentary">Gold Mafia</a>‘ within seven days of receiving a letter from the President’s Secretary, Nana Bediatuo Asante.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Aljazeera_2023_Zimbabwe_Corruption_Documentary">The documentary</a> exposed gold smuggling and money laundering in Zimbabwe, linking cartels, top government officials and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.
The letter accused the documentary of making baseless claims that President Akufo-Addo acted as a lawyer for Mr Alistair Mathias, and implying that the President unlawfully benefitted from an alleged $100 million state infrastructure contract awarded to Mr Mathias.
The documentary also features Mathias and others involved in money laundering, claiming that there is no African president they cannot access. Mathias said:

There is no president that either of us (referring to himself and Ewan Macmillan, one of the main subjects of the investigation), can’t get to on this continent. Ghana’s president is a good friend of mine. In fact, he was my lawyer.

Mathias, who claimed to be the previous largest <a class="Markdown_link__9ACHA MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">gold dealer</a> in Ghana, stated that he used to conduct between $40 million to $60 million worth of gold business each month in Ghana. He also mentioned that he secures government contracts throughout Africa, including tenders for road construction, procurement, and supplying of various goods like oil.
Mathias stated that he indirectly took care of politicians in exchange for the freedom to carry out gold trading and other activities.

Ghanaian President Gives Al Jazeera 7 Days To Apologise Over Gold Mafia

The opposition CCC has challenged President Emmerson Mnangagwa to address the nation on allegations of money laundering and gold smuggling exposed by the Al Jazeera documentary “Gold Mafia”.
Speaking at a Press conference in Harare on Friday, CCC deputy spokesperson Gift Siziba said that all those implicated in the alleged money laundering and gold smuggling should be prosecuted. Said Siziba:

We are very much worried that up to date nothing has been done to bring to justice those that are implicated in this huge scandal and not only the gold scandal but also the siphoning of our resources illegally in different aspects be it lithium, diamonds and so forth.
We definitely demand that at this juncture, it is important for the President (Mnangagwa) to address the nation and all the people who are implicated in these corrupt deals to be brought to book.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) said it froze the bank accounts of four suspects linked to the scam.
Some of the individuals whose assets were frozen are Cleopas Chidodo, David Chirozvi, Mehlululi Dube and Fredrick Kunaka.
Chidodo is the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe Head of Security. He appeared in Episode 2 of the documentary explaining how he assists gold smugglers avoid detection at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
Chirozvi is the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Aurex Jewellery Head of Finance.
Kunaka is the General Manager of Fidelity Printers and Refiners. He told the undercover reporters that he received a kickback of US$30 000 a month from the “Gold Mafia”.
Dube, who is associated with Golden Beryl Private Limited, was allegedly being paid US$3 000 per month by the gold smuggling syndicate.

Gold Mafia: CCC Challenges Mnangagwa To Address The Nation

Senior Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) officials say Uebert Angel (real surname Mudzanire) misled the public when he claimed that what people saw on Al Jazeera’s investigative documentary “Gold Mafia” “was not real; it was acting” as part of “a classified national intelligence assignment”.
Speaking after the final episode of the Gold Mafia documentary titled “Have The King With You”, Angel’s lawyer Lovemore Madhuku, said his client was working with national intelligence.
Madhuku said that after Angel was approached by the purported investors, he consulted the national intelligence to do security checks on them and was advised that something suspicious was going on.
However, senior CIO officers who spoke to <a href="https://thenewshawks.com/cio-bosses-dismiss-uebert-angel-claims-on-their-role-in-gold-mafia/">The NewsHawks</a> dismissed Angel’s assertions saying there was no CIO operation of the nature Angel claims. Said the senior CIO officer:

What Angel said through his lawyer is fiction. There was no such an intelligence operation.
In any case, even if it was there he would not be the one to speak about it.
He doesn’t work for CIO and knows nothing about how it operates and its internal dynamics.
He doesn’t know what he is talking about, but what he said is being viewed and taken seriously.
It will be acted upon. There will be an internal process to deal with that.

Another CIO boss said President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Envoy and Ambassador-at-Large was “waffling”. Said the official:

He was just waffling. How would he know of our operations that we who work don’t know anything about? There is no such thing.
It’s just a smokescreen to cover his tracks and protect the chefs (Mnangagwa and Auxillia). In fact, the whole thing is ridiculous.
If that was an intelligence operation, it would be more serious, clinical and sophisticated, not mahumbwe aya (child’s play).
Intelligence operations of that nature are not child’s play.

CIO Bosses Scoff At Uebert Angel Claims On Their Role In "Gold Mafia"

A government official from Eswatini has described Gold Mafia, the Al Jazeera documentary that exposed syndicates that are behind massive gold smuggling and money laundering in Zimbabwe, as a personal fight against Uebert Angel.
In the documentary, Zimbabwe featured prominently after Uebert Angel, born Hubert Mudzanire, was secretly recorded offering to help undercover Al Jazeera journalists to launder US$1,2 billion in dirty money.
Al Jazeera journalists had introduced themselves to Angel as part of Chinese criminals that wanted to clean dirty money through gold smuggling.
The documentary also touched on the smuggling of Zimbabwean cigarettes into South Africa and money laundering.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, Eswatini government spokesperson Alphaeous Nxumalo described the exposé as a personal vendetta against Angel who is President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ambassador-at-large.
Nxumalo claimed there was a plot to smear Mnangagwa’s name and scuttle Zimbabwe’s investment deals. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010613/gold-mafia-expose-rocks-region">NewsDay</a> quotes him as saying:

He accused the Al Jazeera journalists of trying to jeopardise the investment and engagement efforts since it failed to show Angel holding the gold.
Nxumalo defended Angel ahead of King Mswati III’s arrival in Zimbabwe where he is scheduled to officially open the 63rd edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Bulawayo on Friday.
Zambia’s former Foreign Affairs minister Harry Kalaba also made another recording where he said there was nothing amiss with what  Angel was doing as diplomats could do “anything” to woo investors.
Kalaba resigned as Foreign Affairs minister under former President Lungu, citing corruption in the Zambian government. He believes that diplomats have to use their ingenuity to attract investors to their country and there is nothing wrong with their behind-the-scenes actions. He also thinks that Zimbabwe’s situation should be understood from the perspective of the sanctions they are going through and President Mnangagwa should be encouraged instead of being criticized.
Local analysts, however, scoffed at Nxumalo and Kalaba’s attempts to dismiss the revelations by Al Jazeera. Centre for Natural Resource Governance executive director Farai Maguwu said the comments simply reveal the endemic corruption in Africa.
A political analyst named Rejoice Ngwenya said that African governments rely on diplomacy to maintain their current situation. Diplomats are not searched at airports, which allows them to engage in unethical behaviour without consequence. Ngwenya also criticized foreign diplomats for not considering how their actions affect local communities.
Angel, through his lawyer Lovemore Madhuku, claimed that he did nothing wrong as he was taking part in an intelligence operation.

Eswatini Describes Gold Mafia As A Personal Fight Against Uebert Angel

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), and the Zimbabwe Anti-corruption Commission (ZACC) have intensified investigations into eight individuals implicated in the Al Jazeera Gold Mafia four-part documentary series.
This comes amid concerns that Zimbabwe risks violating the strict regulations of the Financial Action Task Force (FAFT), an international policy-making and standard-setting body dedicated to combating money laundering and terrorist financing.
Zimbabwe has made the necessary reforms to address its money laundering and terrorist financing weaknesses and has been removed from the grey list by FAFT.
FIU director general Oliver Chiperesa told <a href="https://businesstimes.co.zw/gold-mafia-fiu-police-intensify-probe/">Business Times</a> that they are working with law enforcement agencies to identify assets and analyse transactions to establish possible links to crime. He said:

The interim measures were also taken while monitoring and analysing the documentary episodes as they came out to see if there was further information that could potentially be used in criminal investigations.
After all the episodes, we are now sitting down with other relevant agencies and evaluating what is available, and deciding on the next course of action.
The FIU will not make a decision alone but in close consultation with law enforcement agencies as we always do.

FIU has ordered the freezing of assets and accounts belonging to Ewan McMillan, Kamlesh Pattni, Uebert Mudzanire (aka Angel), and Simon Rudland. Said Chiperesa:

The freezing is not a seizure of the funds or assets but simply an interim measure and a precaution to ensure that potential proceeds of crime are not disposed of or transferred before law enforcement agents can commence possible investigations.
It is important to emphasise that what is there at the moment are largely allegations and suspicions.

Angel, who is President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s special envoy and ambassador-at-large to Europe and the Americas, and a preacher, was secretly filmed by undercover Al Jazeera reporters offering to use his diplomatic cover to launder large volumes of cash into Zimbabwe as part of a gold smuggling operation.
He and his side-kick Rikki Doolan were also seen repeatedly name-dropping President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s name.
The United Kingdom’s upper house of Parliament, the House of Lords, wants the British government to probe the allegations of criminal activity against its citizen, Angel.

Gold Mafia: Financial Intelligence Unit, Police Intensify Investigations

Veritas Zimbabwe, a legal watchdog, has called for a forensic investigation of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) amid allegations the central bank was complicit in gold smuggling and money laundering.
Al Jazeera recently released a four-part documentary series, Gold Mafia, in which some high-profile individuals, including Zimbabwean officials, bragged they were gold smugglers and money launderers and also implicated the RBZ in the illegal activities.
The RBZ issued a statement denying the allegations, saying they were “sensationally wild, false and malicious”.
Despite the denial, the RBZ’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), ordered the freezing of the bank accounts of at least four individuals cited in the documentary series.
In a statement released this week, Veritas pointed out the apparent contradictions in the RBZ’s response. It said:

… the Financial (Intelligence) Unit of the Reserve Bank has frozen the bank accounts of at least four persons portrayed in the series, which suggests there is at least some truth in the allegation.

Veritas said the allegations against the RBZ have tarnished the image of the central bank and “suspicion within financial markets, multi-lateral financial institutions and” Zimbabweans in general. It said:

The persons alleged to be carrying on this illegal trade were shown boasting of their close links to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and to senior government officials, up to and including the President and his wife.
They said they had the Governor of the Reserve Bank “on speed dial” and that senior managers of Fidelity Printers and Refineries, a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank, were on their payroll to facilitate the issue of licences to buy and export gold.
The Reserve Bank is a vital cog in the country’s economy, and it is essential for it to maintain a spotless reputation for competence, fiscal responsibility and probity.
The Al Jazeera series, coming on top of the Bank’s illegal quasi-fiscal activities, have tarnished its reputation and sown suspicion within financial markets, multi-lateral financial institutions and the general Zimbabwean public.

Veritas, has, therefore, called for a forensic investigation “in the interests of transparency and accountability an investigation” to ascertain whether the RBZ and its subsidiary companies are involved in unlawful activities.
It also suggested that President Emmerson Mnangagwa appoint a commission of inquiry to probe the allegations.
Veritas said a thorough investigation should be conducted into the RBZ’s activities “if our country’s reputation is to be upheld.”

Gold Mafia: Legal Watchdog Calls For Forensic Investigation Into RBZ Activities

A British Member of Parliament in the House of Lords, which is the British Upper House of Parliament, has requested that Uebert Angel and Rikki Doolan, who is married to his niece Nicola, be investigated for alleged gold smuggling, money laundering, and corruption.
Lord Jonathan Oates has also demanded that Angel and Doolan’s assets be frozen since they are also UK citizens.
This follows the release of Al Jazeera’s latest investigation, Gold Mafia, which exposed gangs allegedly driving gold smuggling and money laundering worth billions of dollars in Southern Africa.
Angel, who is President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s special envoy and ambassador-at-large to Europe and the Americas, offered to Al Jazeera’s undercover reporters that he could use his diplomatic cover to carry large volumes of dirty cash into Zimbabwe as part of a laundering operation also involving gold smuggling.
Doolan repeatedly told Al Jazeera’s undercover reporters who posed as gangsters that he and Angel would be able to arrange a meeting with President Mnangagwa.
Lord Oates raised the issues during a written questions-for-answers session in the House of Peers at the Pace of Westminster in London. The questions read:

Lord Oates to ask His Majesty’s Government what steps they will take, if any, to investigate alleged discrepancies in the application that Uebert Angel, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador at Large, made for British citizenship.

Gold Mafia: British MP Demands Uebert Angel's Assets Be Frozen

Zimbabweans based in the United Kingdom (UK) on Tuesday, 18 April staged protests at the Zimbabwe and United Arab Emirates embassies in London.
The protestors were demanding the arrest of all Zimbabweans implicated in alleged gold smuggling and money laundering that was recently exposed by Al Jazeera in a four-part documentary called “Gold Mafia”.
The coordinator of the protests, Patricia Chinyoka, told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010385/diasporans-hold-gold-mafia-protests">NewsDay</a> that they will continue protesting until the Gold Mafia kingpins were arrested. Said Chinyoka:

We are expecting the UAE to investigate all those implicated in the Al Jazeera documentary.
Tomorrow we are going to have a vigil for Hon (Job) Sikhala where we will be joined by the British MPs.
</blockquote>
ZANU PF UK executive member Xavier Muneyi Muzukuru Zavare accused the protestors of lacking patriotism. He said:

What they are doing is very shameful and embarrassing. It’s like desecrating the graves of their and our ancestors. That’s mocking the great job done by the ancestors.
You can’t choose one’s wedding day or remember a late person to introduce your own story.
Nowhere in the world do you find people not respecting their country’s independence day.
We are quite surprised if these people are Zimbabweans or Rhodesians. It’s shameful because most of these Zimbabweans are led by a Rhodie who recently said on Twitter and their Change Radio that there is no Independence.

Last month, the Government said the individuals mentioned in the Gold Mafia documentary will be punished if they are convicted of gold smuggling and money laundering.
“Gold Mafia” is a four-part documentary series by Al Jazeera that looks at how international criminal gangs were buying gold in Zimbabwe and illegally exporting it to countries such as Dubai (United Arab Emirates).
The series exposes alleged illicit financial flows from Zimbabwe, including serious allegations of abuse of diplomatic immunity, illicit gold trading, corruption and money laundering in the mining sector.

The Al Jazeera Investigative Unit recently released a four-part documentary called “Gold Mafia” exposing gold smuggling and money laundering gangs in southern Africa.
The documentary revealed how the gang members get rich while plundering their nations and keeping millions in abject poverty.

On 27 February 2023, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/al-jazeera-investigations-to-expose-astonishing-plunder-looting-in-zimbabwe/">award-winning journalist and filmmaker Hopewell Chin’ono posted on Twitter</a> that Al Jazeera was going to expose corrupt Zimbabwean politicians and their associates in a documentary
Chin’ono said that the producers had shown the films to a select group of corruption experts and journalists to give their comments before the documentary is broadcasted.
He also said the documentary would expose “astonishing looting, plunder and laundering in Zimbabwe”.
Nick Mangwana makes startling remarks
On 01 March 2023, the Permanent Secretary of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwean-govt-admits-to-corruption-smuggling-and-money-laundering/">Ndavaningi Mangwana admitted that there is rampant corruption, smuggling of minerals, and money laundering</a> in the country. He said:

Facts:-Is there corruption in Zimbabwe? Yes. -Is there smuggling of minerals and forex out of the country? Yes -Is there money laundering in Zimbabwe? Yes (including by NGOs) -Is the Government fully committed to getting rid of all the above ills? That’s a fact.

Postponed
The four-part documentary was scheduled to start on Thursday, 02 March 2023 at 12 PM Central African Time <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/al-jazeera-investigations-on-zimbabwe-broadcast-postponed-due-to-technical-issues/">but was postponed</a> to allow the broadcaster to sort out a technical issue.
No Sanctions – Mangudya
On 06 March 2023, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor, John Mangudya, dismissed as false and malicious reports carried in a trailer of “Gold Mafia” which had not been screened.
The reports suggested that the central bank was engaged in illicit gold dealings, corruption, and money laundering.
Mangudya also said there are no sanctions on Zimbabwean imports and exports, including on gold.
He, however, later clarified his remarks saying Zimbabwe remained under economic sanctions that have hampered the movement of funds and trade.
Episode 1 – The Laundry Service
The first episode of “Gold Mafia” finally premiered on 23 March 2023. Among the highlights, Zimbabwe’s ambassador at large Spirit Embassy founder, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Uebert_Angel">Hubert Mudzanire</a> alias <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Uebert_Angel">Uebert Angel</a> said President Emmerson Mnangagwa will be in power until he dies. He said:

Angel also claimed that Mnangagwa gave him absolute power to make treaties with other countries without even getting the president involved.
ZACC Comments On Gold Mafia
On 24 March, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) <a href="https://twitter.com/ZACConline/status/1639195821420998657?s=20">said that it was closely following</a> the Al Jazeera documentary into alleged gold smuggling and money laundering in the country.
The Chief Investment Officer at the Office of Presidential Envoy and Ambassador at Large (OPEAAL) Sobona Mtisi issued a statement in response to the documentary denying the allegations raised by Al Jazeera. OPEAAL later disowned the statement.
George Charamba’s Threats
On 29 March, presidential spokesperson George Charamba warned that journalists who were “reckless enough to repeat what [the Al Jazeera] documentary defamatorily says” will be sorry.
Episode 2 – Smoke &amp; Mirrors
The second episode of “Gold Mafia” premiered on 30 March 2023. Among other people, it featured a British Christian preacher, Rikki Doolan, who was portrayed as a money launderer, saying all money laundering deals are done with the president’s blessing. 
Enter CCC
On 31 March, the opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/ccc-demand-international-forensic-investigation-into-zimbabwes-gold-mafia/">demanded an international forensic investigation</a> of individuals implicated in alleged money laundering activities and illicit gold dealings in Zimbabwe.
In a statement signed by party spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere, CCC said there should be a full, independent, international investigation in respect of all those who are implicated and mentioned.
Govt Responds To “Gold Mafia”
On 03 March, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Senator <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Monica_Mutsvangwa">Monica Mutsvangwa</a>, said the government will punish individuals mentioned in Gold Mafia if they are convicted of gold smuggling and money laundering as stated in the documentary. She said members of the public will be informed of new developments in due course.
RBZ Freezes Accounts of the “Gold Mafia”
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) said it had frozen the assets of four officials who were caught on camera confessing that they are involved in gold smuggling, money laundering, bribery and other corrupt activities. The four were identified as Cleopas Chidodo, David Chirozvi, Mehlululi Dube and Fredrick Kunaka.
Episode 3 – El Dorado 
On Thursday, 06 April 2023, Al Jazeera Investigations premiered Episode 3 of the Gold Mafia documentary. 
In this episode, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/gold-mafia-alleged-money-launderer-explains-how-zim-gold-is-used-to-clean-dirty-cash/">Kamlesh Pattni is seen talking with Al Jazeera journalist “Mr. Stanley”</a> who posed as a Chinese gangster who wanted his US$100 million dirty cash cleaned.
Tinopona Katsande
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tinopona_Katsande">Tinopona Katsande</a>, a Zimbabwean broadcaster and actress, called on the gold mafia, land barons, and drug dealers to purchase cancer machines, saying many Zimbabweans were dying from cancer.
In a Facebook post, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/tino-katsande-to-undergo-radiotherapy-as-she-battles-cancer/">Katsande who is battling cancer</a> said about six people had died in the past two weeks because they could not afford the privately owned cancer machines. 
Uebert Angel’s Account Frozen
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> said it had frozen <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Uebert_Angel">Uebert Angel</a>‘s accounts over alleged gold smuggling, money laundering, bribery, and other corrupt activities. Through the Financial Intelligence Unit, RBZ also froze the accounts of Ewan McMillan, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/accountant-reveals-how-kamlesh-pattni-is-duping-zimbabwe-gold-mafia/">Kamlesh Pattni</a> and <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/rbz-doesnt-have-money-to-buy-gold-rudland-buys-on-its-behalf-al-jazeera/">Simon Rudland</a> stating that it was taking a strong stance against money laundering and was tracking activities that could expose further money laundering by the alleged Gold Mafia.
ZAPU Calls For Protests
According to a flyer circulated on social media, ZAPU called for protests at Uebert Angel’s church in Johannesburg, South Africa to voice displeasure at the government’s “apparent refusal to act on the scandal.”
Simon Rudland Responds to Gold Mafia Allegations
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Simon_Rudland">Simon Rudland,</a> the co-owner of Gold Leaf Tobacco Zimbabwe, dismissed the Al Jazeera documentary “<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gold_Smuggling_in_Zimbabwe">Gold Mafia</a>” as sensationalized and extreme. He argued that the documentary only presents selective snippets of wild and broad claims without proper context or evidence to support them.
Madhuku Comes To Uebert Angel’s Defence
Madhuku said that he would hold a press conference on 13 April in response to the Al Jazeera documentary. The press conference was supposed to be held the same day Al Jazeera released the final episode of the four-series documentary. It was, however, postponed after Al Jazeera delayed premiering the final episode.
Episode 4 – Have The King With You
The final episode of the Gold Mafia documentary titled “Have The King With You” was released on 14 April 2023.
Angel Claims He Was Acting
On 14 April 2023, Angel’s lawyer Lovemore Madhuku said his client’s words and actions filmed by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit), were staged and a classified national intelligence operation.

Gold Mafia Al Jazeera Documentary Timeline

Data analysts Team Pachedu on Sunday announced they had cancelled their planned mass protests against the deteriorating socio-economic environment and the continued incarceration of Job Sikhala.
The protests were also against the looting of the country’s resources by the elite exposed by the Al Jazeera documentary called “Gold Mafia”.
In a Twitter post, Team Pachedu said they cancelled the protests which were scheduled to coincide with Independence Day celebrations on 18 April due to a lack of stakeholders’ consensus. Reads the post:

We have been pushing for a peaceful national protest on April 18 in light of the deteriorating socio-economic environment, including the Gold Mafia saga and the unjust continual detention of Job Sikhala. Regrettably, we are calling off due to a lack of stakeholders’ consensus.

However, some civil society organisations said they had not been formally approached by Team Pachedu about the planned protests.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010352/gold-mafia-demo-flops">NewsDay</a>, Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition chairperson Peter Mutasa said:

We are not aware of any discussions around this. We were never approached or consulted about it.
So we do not know much about why stakeholders didn’t support it as stated.

Centre for Natural Resource Governance director Farai Maguwu also told the publication that Team Pachedu never consulted them about the protests. He said:

I think the coordination should have occurred through or with established movements such as workers’ unions, student movements, and civil society.

Team Pachedu Cancel Gold Mafia Protests

Political analysts say the Al Jazeera “Gold Mafia” documentary which exposed alleged gold smuggling and money laundering by individuals who named-dropped President Emmerson Mnangagwa may not have any impact on voting patterns in forthcoming general elections.
In a recent interview with <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/al-jazeera-expose-can-bolster-eds-popularity-among-electorate-says-political-analysts/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>, political researcher Alexander Rusero said Gold Mafia trended on social media platforms but a greater part of the electorate was not on those platforms. Said Rusero:

As much as you cannot downplay the role of social media in electoral politics, Zimbabwe’s political balance of forces is still pretty much offline, and not online.
The country’s political gravitas is offline. Online discourses, exposes on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube where this documentary has been popularized remain elitist in the current scheme of things.
There is nothing much. I would not want to go into the documentary’s shortcomings but to then say, people would change their voting patterns or perception will be desperation.
This documentary can actually bolster Mnangagwa’s position in terms of loyalty in his party (ZANU PF); in terms of the Haves and Have Nots etc.

Another political analyst, Eldred Masunungure told the publication that corruption by the elites has been normalized and as a result, the Al Jazeera documentary did not induce enough shock to alter voting patterns. Said Masunungure:

Because corruption has been routinized in the country, there is not enough shock attendant on the ‘Gold Mafia’ exposés and therefore the impact on voting intentions may be muted.
The impact of the ‘Gold Mafia’ documentary depends on multiple factors, one of which is that the revelations are not entirely new except that people/voters did not have solid, irrefutable evidence as was provided by the documentary.
The corruption in the country, especially involving the ruling elite, has been so embedded and systemic that most Zimbabweans have become numb to the pervasive problem.
The other vital factor is the extent to which the revelations have been published beyond the urban areas and beyond the more politically sophisticated block of voters.
Is there a critical mass of politically conscious and alert citizens who can speak truth to power in the ballot box?

Gold Mafia Al Jazeera Documentary Won't Influence Voting Patterns - Analysts

Zimbabwean businessman and alleged gold smuggler Ewan Macmillan says he is done bribing politicians to smuggle gold out of the country.
Macmillan (aka Mr. Gold) was featured in the final episode of the Gold Mafia Al Jazeera documentary titled “Have The King With You” released on Friday, 14 April.
Speaking to the undercover journalists who posed as Chinese gangsters who wanted to wash dirty money, Macmillan said:
<blockquote>
I will never go down that road again. You pay, you pay, you pay, you pay and you pay.
And you think this is so much money. Why am I paying this much money?
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Ambassador at Large and Presidential Envoy to Europe and the Americas, Uebert Angel, was also filmed by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit) deriding Macmillan, saying he was no longer “Mr. Gold” and had been overtaken by his former employee Pedzisai “Scott” Sakupwanya.
Angel also showed the reporters pictures of Sakupwanya flaunting his US$5 million cash and some gold bars on 29 June 2020. He said:

He is the biggest gold guy in Zimbabwe. He’s right there, he’s in his house, sleeping on five million U.S. dollars.
This guy used to clean MacMillan’s car. Macmillan was the one that this one worked for. It’s good we know it’s Macmillan.
Macmillan doesn’t control nothing. This was his worker cleaning his car. He is the number one now in Zimbabwe.
Scott is number one. Number one without a doubt. We can just call him right now.
</blockquote>
Angel then called Sakupwanya in the presence of the undercover reporters. He said:
<blockquote>
So I’ve got some good investors for you here. They are hearing you already. From January, what have you gotten right now? What have you sold?
</blockquote>
Scott said he had sold six tonnes of gold in 10 months. When Angel asked about what happens when someone invests with him, Sakupwanya said:
<blockquote>
I guess I can take ten percent per month.
</blockquote>
He said if he gets cash from someone, he gives them ten percent per month for the money they invest with him.
Scott said the investors are 100 per guaranteed to get a return for their investment.
On being asked by Angel how he moves the money back to the investor, he said:
<blockquote>
It depends on where they are from. If they are from Dubai, I can pay into their Dubai account… Anywhere, anywhere in the world, I can manage to do the transfer. Not a problem for me.
</blockquote>
According to Angel, Sakupwanya has managed to keep his wealth, and proceeds to gold, due to his loyalty to Mnangagwa. He said:
<blockquote>
Because he is (pointing above, to indicate that he is Mnangagwa’s man) … and the president.
</blockquote>
According to Al Jazeera, the gold smugglers carry Zimbabwe’s gold to Dubai, where it is then sold in exchange for clean cash.
This money is transferred to the bank accounts of the money launderers, who hand over an equivalent amount of their dirty dollars to the Zimbabwe government through the smugglers.

Gold Mafia: Macmillan Says He's Done Bribing Politicians To Smuggle Gold

Kenyan gold dealer Kamlesh Pattni claims he pays President Emmerson Mnangagwa every two weeks to enable him to continue carrying out his gold and money laundering operations in Zimbabwe.
Pattni (aka Brother Paul), made the claims to undercover Al Jazeera reporters who posed as Chinese gangsters who wanted his services to launder as much as US$1.2 billion from Hong Kong.
This was revealed in the fourth and final installment of the Al Jazeera documentary, “Gold Mafia” titled “Have The King With You” that was premiered on Friday, 14 April 2023.
Pattni told the undercover reporters that he had the President’s number and regularly chats with him on WhatsApp. He was filmed saying:

This is his number. I call him Tembo…I always give him how much we have done… Yeah, he has to be informed. I was just writing him a message here.
</blockquote>
Pattni then showed the reporters WhatsApp messages he allegedly exchanged with the president.
One of the undercover reporters asked Pattnin: “This is the President’s number. Direct to the President?” In response, Pattni said: “Yes directly… I have to inform him.”
Pattni also claimed he makes payments to Mnangagwa every two weeks through his young brother. He said:

This is like the norm of life. The incentives, the fees… the appreciation.
Every two weeks, Swetang, my brother is there. Every fortnight, he is there at the State House. We always contribute our appreciation.
</blockquote>
One of the undercover reporters then asked Pattni; “To Mnangagwa?” In response, Pattni said:
<blockquote>
To the King himself… When you work, you must always have the king with you. The President.
</blockquote>
In the first episode of Gold Mafia, a former accountant of Kamlesh Pattni said that his former boss is duping Zimbabwean authorities. He said:
<blockquote>
He exports jewellery and gold bars to Dubai and the rest of the world. In exchange, he has to bring foreign currency to Zimbabwe. On paper, he is bringing money to Zimbabwe.
Sometimes they’re bringing some cash from there and then they declare it. But the amount is less.
They’re not declaring the actual amounts. They bring 50 000, sometimes 100 000 but they declare it as one million or two million.

In one blue form obtained by Al Jazeera, Pattni states that he brought US$1 219 723.20 from selling jewellery in Dubai.
But Pattni does not bring US$1 219 723.20 to Zimbabwe. His former accountant said:
<blockquote>
They give bribes to the customs guys there. They tell them to stamp their blue form, and put the amount they are bringing as $1.2 million but actually, he didn’t bring that $1.2 million amount.
</blockquote>
A document obtained by Al Jazeera suggests that instead of US$1 219 723.20, Pattni brought US$99 850.
He leaves the bulk of the money he got from selling Jewellery in Dubai.
But that affects his ability to buy gold in Zimbabwe. He does not have US$1.2 million as declared. His former accountant says he would go on the market.
He collects United States dollars from his clients in Zimbabwe and buys gold which he exports as before. He collects his 18% percent commission from the Zimbabwean government. He uses it to pay his clients in Dubai. The accountant added:

With gold exports, Kamlesh Pattni is pretending that he is helping the country with foreign reserves. He is not bringing any foreign currency inside the country.
He is taking all foreign reserves outside the country. He’s just making a fool of the people around him, the government officials.

Gold Mafia: Kamlesh Pattni Claims He "Appreciates" Mnangagwa Every Two Weeks

The former first lady, Grace Mugabe, allegedly used her position to smuggle diamonds and ivory out of the country without her husband’s knowledge and her luggage was not subject to search.
Grace was the wife of the late former President Robert Mugabe who died in 2019, almost two years after he was deposed in a military coup.
The alleged smuggling of diamonds and ivory by Grace was revealed in the final episode of the Gold Mafia Al Jazeera documentary titled “Have The King With You” released on Friday, 14 April.
Speaking to the undercover journalists who posed as Chinese gangsters who wanted to wash dirty money, Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) manager Cleopas Chidodo alleged that Grace made a lot of money through smuggling.
He claimed that planes would be sent to diamond mines where the finest diamonds would be handpicked and flown to Dubai via Harare International Airport.
Chidodo further alleged that poachers would be sent to kill elephants and the ivory would be flown out of the country as cargo. Said Chidodo:

She wanted to take things out and Mugabe did not know.
They would go out there and kill elephants and stuff like that. Poachers would then prepare the ivory.
It would come to the airport as cargo in big containers, if the ivory comes and the supervisor asks, they will just say it is for the first family and no one will ask further.
The plane goes to diamond mines and they select some nice diamonds to put in the plane.
The plane will come from the diamond mine and go straight to Dubai, no papers, no what.
They were making money, they made a lot of money.

Gold Mafia: Grace Mugabe Accused Of Smuggling Diamonds And Ivory

Temba Mliswa has demanded that the Government issue a statement and clear the air on the various allegations raised by the Al Jazeera documentary, Gold Mafia.
The Gold Mafia documentary is a four-part investigation by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit) which was aired over a four-week period.
Mliswa, an independent MP (Norton), argued that the Government should state its position as many explanations have been given by officials who were caught on camera incriminating themselves and also name-dropping in front of undercover journalists. Said Mliswa:

The Gold Mafia issue has become the prime topic and I think Gvt should come out with a statement on its position.
There have been many accounts flying around. This has created more confusion and cemented the perception that there are more shady deals occurring.
First, there were stories about sanctions-busting; then RBZ said gold isn’t under sanctions and now we hear that it was all an intelligence operation, yet some accounts were reportedly frozen.
Clearly, there is a need for a statement from Gvt stating which is which.
This is why I also stated that authorities should have waited for the completion of the documentary before giving statements to avoid a scenario like this one.
Now we have a sea of narratives opposing each other and some lacking the slightest iota of sense they are simply dubious!

Angel, however, claims his words and actions filmed by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit), were staged and a classified national intelligence operation.
Addressing journalists in Harare on Friday soon after the final episode of the Gold Mafia documentary titled “Have The King With You”,  was aired, Angel’s lawyer Lovemore Madhuku, said his client was working with national intelligence.

Temba Mliswa Challenges Government To Issue Statement On "Gold Mafia"

Self-proclaimed prophet Uebert Angel has denied allegations against him in the Al Jazeera Gold Mafia documentary.
Angel, who was appointed Ambassador at Large and Presidential Envoy to Europe and the Americas by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2021, said his words and actions filmed by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit), were staged and a classified national intelligence operation.
Addressing journalists in Harare on Friday soon after the final episode of the Gold Mafia documentary titled “Have The King With You”, Angel’s lawyer Lovemore Madhuku, said his client was working with national intelligence.
He said that after Angel was approached by the purported investors, he consulted the national intelligence to do security checks on them and was advised that something suspicious was going on. Madhuku was quoted by <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/uebert-angel-finally-speaks-on-gold-mafia-claims-it-was-all-an-act-a-classified-national-intelligence-operation/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> as saying:

This interaction led to what we are calling a classified national intelligence assignment which meant a decision was taken with intelligence authorities that he would play along and would not cancel his interactions with these persons, he would meet them as if he was going to make arrangements for them to meet the president and be able to do investments in Zimbabwe.
So it was in the context of a national intelligence operation, Zimbabwe wanted to gain intelligence out of it, and wanted to see how far its enemies could go and what the agendas were.
Ordinarily, these things are not told to the world but because of the intensity and implications of the documentary on the integrity of the operations of governmental systems in this country, my client felt obliged that he has a moral obligation to at least give an indication of what was going on.
</blockquote>
Madhuku also claimed that the purported calls to First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa and Zimbabwe Miners Federation president Henrietta Rushwaya as shown in the documentary were made to decoys. He said:
<blockquote>
In that documentary, all the things that are said, no one was phoned, the first lady or Henrietta Rushwaya were decoys that were put in an intelligence operation. So even the statements that you hear are not real.
If you were to put it very boldly or mildly, they were acting along and it’s unfortunate that according to the version we are putting it is unfortunate that it is national security issues that are then played in public because of the agenda of these people which then forces issues that ordinarily would not be put on the table.
</blockquote>
Last month Angel’s office, the Office of Presidential Envoy and Ambassador at Large (OPEAAL), responded to the Al Jazeera documentary and denied that he was involved in money laundering and gold smuggling.
In his press conference on Friday, Madhuku essentially <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/uebert-angels-office-responds-to-al-jazeera-documentary/">repeated what the Chief Investment Officer at OPEAAL Sobona Mtisi said last month</a>. Mtisi’s statement read in part:
<blockquote>
The calls to the decoys were made in light of the leading questions asked by the “investors”.
They kept pushing to have the First Family in the discussion, especially the First Lady and the President.
They even threw in figures to help in the charity organisation which Ambassador Angel refused and even told them he had his own money; this part was omitted from the documentary.
It’s just amazing how people are made to believe what has been propagated as the gospel.
The best these people got are the audios from the decoys, they never got the chance to film the President or the First Lady because the Ambassador was already informed by the security agents prior to getting in the meeting that they didn’t have the money they claimed to have.

Angel’s assets were recently frozen by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Financial Intelligence Unit.
Reports suggest Angel is likely to face money laundering charges and allegations of name-dropping.

Gold Mafia: Uebert Angel Says it Was All An Act, A Classified National Intelligence Operation

Zimbabwean businessman and alleged gold smuggler Ewan Macmillan (aka Mr. Gold) has spoken disparagingly about black people saying one should not do business with them.
Macmillan made the comments while speaking to Al Jazeera undercover reporters, who were pretending to be Chinese criminals looking to launder more than US$100 million of undeclared wealth.
The “loud and loquacious” Macmillan was featured in the fourth and final episode of the “Gold Mafia” documentary titled “Have The King With You” that was premiered on Friday, 14 April 2023.
Despite claiming that President Emmerson Mnangagwa was his partner, Macmillan said investing with black people may result in one losing their money, adding black people are liars. He said:
<blockquote>
Do me a favour. Whatever you do listen to what I say. Don’t invest with a black guy. You will die. They will tell you just lies.
You’ll invest, and you’ll lose all your money. Do not trust any black person.
</blockquote>
Macmillan also told the undercover reporters that the President’s son, Emmerson Jr was his partner.
He claimed that he paid Emmerson Jr’s debt and received the President’s Rolex watch after paying off the debt. Said Macmillan:
<blockquote>
I can put you straight in touch with him. That’s no problem. He is a friend of mine. We meet him, no problem.
And you won’t believe this. This is between us. I have Mnangagwa’s gold-studded President. Rolex.
Because the son ran into debt and had to pay the debt off so he gave me the Rolex.
I paid the debt off, and he said “Please don’t tell my dad”. And I think, … man, you are joking.
I’ve got the dad’s watch. It’s a blue face with gold studs all around. So I’ve all that in a safe…

Macmillan’s assets, alongside those of Uebert Angel, Kamlesh Pattni, and Simon Rudland were recently frozen by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Financial Intelligence Unit.
Pattni, Angel, and Rudland were implicated in gold smuggling, money laundering, bribery, and other corrupt activities in the Al Jazeera documentary.
A 2020 report by the International Crisis Group (ICG) said gold worth US$1.5 billion was smuggled out of Zimbabwe every year by syndicates linked to political elites.

Gold Mafia: Don't Invest With Black People, You Will Die - Ewan Macmillan

Ewan Macmillan, (aka Mr. Gold) a Zimbabwean gold dealer, businessman, and suspected gold smuggler, claims he has President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ear and does whatever he tells him to do.
In the fourth and final episode of the “Gold Mafia” documentary titled “Have The King With You,” Macmillan spoke to undercover Al Jazeera journalists who posed as gangsters who wanted to clean US$1OO million dirty cash through gold smuggling.
Speaking to the reporters, Macmillan boasted that when he was in trouble, Mnangagwa intervened on his behalf. He said:
<blockquote>
I sat with him three months ago. Sitting with him, chatting to him… The good news is whatever I told him, he did.
Do you know that? When I was getting hurt, I said “You’ve got to stop it here, here, here, here”. And he did it, he did it. Within two weeks, he fixed everything.
</blockquote>
He also claimed Mnangagwa came to his aid when he had a dispute with Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor John Mangudya. It is not clear what the dispute was all about. He said:
<blockquote>
You know Mangudya’s problem. I said to him [E.D.], “Mangudya, I think he’s dirty. You need to find him out”. E.D. went and fixed him.
</blockquote>
Macmillan however, admitted that maintaining relationships with high-profile people comes at a high price. He said:
<blockquote>
You pay a guy money every month. You just get a partner and pay so much money a month and he just sits back. He’s happy and doesn’t care. That’s what happens.
</blockquote>
According to Al Jazeera, Macmillan was first jailed for gold smuggling in the early 1990s, when he was just 21 years old.
He is allegedly among a set of smugglers who work with Zimbabwe’s state-run refinery, Fidelity Printers and Refineries. He was quoted as saying:

There is an opportunity, a hell of a big opportunity to wash money here. I can give my partner gold in Dubai and he can just pay you anywhere in the world.
</blockquote>
Macmillan did not respond to Al Jazeera’s request for a formal comment about the investigation.

WATCH: Gold Mafia Episode 4 – Have The King With You

A self-proclaimed prophet, Uebert Angel, who has been exposed as an alleged money launderer and gold smuggler in the “Gold Mafia” documentary by Al Jazeera will respond through his lawyer Lovemore Madhuku.
Angel was appointed Zimbabwe’s Ambassador at Large and Presidential Envoy to Europe and the Americas by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2021.
Madhuku has said that he will hold a press conference this Thursday in response to the Al Jazeera documentary.
The press conference will be held the same day Al Jazeera will release the final episode of the four-series documentary.
<a href="https://www.zimmorningpost.com/gold-mafia-ambassador-at-large-eubert-angel-presses-panic-button/">Zim Morning Post</a> reported top government sources as saying Angel is likely to face money laundering charges and allegations of name-dropping. Said the official:
<blockquote>
The authorities are looking into his role in trying to assist those who are laundering money. The law is very clear on this and measures will be taken.
</blockquote>
According to S8(4) of the Money Laundering &amp; Proceeds of Crime Act, “association with or conspiracy to commit, an attempt to commit, and aiding, abetting, facilitating and counselling the commission of money laundering is an offence.”
According to the Al Jazeera documentary, Angel offered undercover reporters who posed as investors that he could use his diplomatic cover to carry large volumes of dirty cash into Zimbabwe as part of a laundering operation also involving gold smuggling.
He repeatedly claimed that Mnangagwa was aware of his schemes, adding:
<blockquote>
I can call the president now, not tomorrow, now and put him on speaker, it’s not an issue. We are the government.
</blockquote>
Angel is the founder and leader of Good News Church, formerly Spirit Embassy, and claims he can heal the sick and predict the outcomes of elections and football matches.
He did not respond to Al Jazeera’s request for a formal comment about the investigation.

Gold Mafia: Madhuku Comes To Uebert Angel's Defence

ZANU PF politician and gold dealer Pedzisai “Scott” Sakupwanya has been named Zimbabwe’s biggest gold baron by Uebert Angel in a documentary by Qatar-based news network Al Jazeera titled Gold Mafia.
Angel, who is a British-Zimbabwean businessman, was appointed Ambassador at Large to Europe and the Americas by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2021.
In a snippet of the fourth and final instalment of Gold Mafia, Angel tells undercover reporters who posed as investors that Sakupawanya is a bigger gold dealer than Ewan MacMillan. He said:
<blockquote>
MacMillan doesn’t control nothing. This (Sakupwanya) was his worker cleaning his car. He is the number one now in Zimbabwe.
</blockquote>
MacMillan, a self-confessed gold smuggler, also features in the Al Jazeera documentary.
Angel also shows the reporters pictures of Sakupwanya flaunting his US$5 million cash and some gold bars on 29 June 2020. He said:

Sakupwanya is a ZANU PF councillor in Mabvuku and is the ruling party’s aspiring parliamentary candidate for Mabvuku Constituency.
He owns Better Brands Jewellery (BBJ) and other gold dealers operating in Mazowe and Penhalonga.

He told undercover reporters that he could help them launder more than US$100 million, saying “I don’t know how you came to me, but I think God must have sent you.”
Angel was appointed a special envoy and ambassador-at-large to Europe and the Americas by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2021.
He offered to Al Jazeera’s undercover reporters that he could use his diplomatic cover to carry millions of dirty cash into Zimbabwe as part of a laundering operation also involving gold smuggling.
Rushwaya is the person whom Angel and his personal assistant Rikki Doolan get in touch with when they want to discuss buying gold for their laundering scam.
Macmillan aka Mr. Gold was first jailed for gold smuggling in the early 1990s when he was just 21 years old.
The the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) recently froze the assets of  Chidodo, Chirozvi, Dube and Kunaka, for alleged involvement in gold smuggling, money laundering, bribery and other corrupt activities after they were exposed by Al Jazeera.
Chidodo is the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe Head of Security. He appeared in Episode 2 of the documentary explaining how he assists gold smugglers avoid detection at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
Chirozvi is the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Aurex Jewellery Head of Finance.
Kunaka is the General Manager of Fidelity Printers and Refiners. He told the undercover reporters that he received a kickback of US$30 000 a month from the “Gold Mafia”.
Dube, who is associated with Golden Beryl Private Limited, was allegedly being paid US$3 000 per month by the gold smuggling syndicate.
