The Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) has announced that recent tests on six popular mealie meal brands have confirmed the absence of harmful levels of glyphosate, a cancer-causing herbicide commonly used in agriculture.
In a statement released on Monday, 14 October, SAZ detailed that it tested Ngwerewere Super Refined Meal, Red Seal Super Roller Meal, Sunrise Roller Meal, Mega Roller Meal, Pearlenta, and Chibataura Roller Meal at the request of the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ).
SAZ Director General Duncan Madambe affirmed that the tests revealed the products available on the market are safe and adhere to international safety standards. Said Madambe:

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe tasked the laboratory to analyse mealie meal samples for Glyphosate levels.
The six samples of mealie meal for the following brands; Ngwerewere Super refined meal, Red seal Super Roller meal, Sunrise Super Roller meal, Mega Roller meal, Pearlenta and Chibataura Roller meal were then analysed.
In all the analyzed samples, the levels of glyphosate were below (&lt;) 0.5 parts per million (ppm) which is the Limit of Detection for the method of test.
It is important to note that there are governing limits for every pesticide, known as Maximum Residue Levels (MRLS).
These are the maximum concentrations in or on food/feed of plant and animal origin that is legally tolerated for it to be considered safe.
Our National Standard for maize meal (ZWS 760) makes reference to the CODEX (Internationally agreed Food Standards) limits for glyphosate in maize to which manufacturers should comply with.
The CODEX 158:2006 glyphosate limit for maize is 5 parts per million (ppm). This means that the detected levels are below the maximum residue limits and the analyzed mealie meal samples are safe for consumption.

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has sent a 20-member delegation to Sao Paulo, Brazil to negotiate the delivery of approximately 400,000 metric tonnes of yellow and white maize.
GMAZ Chairperson Tafadzwa Musarara told <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/zimbabwean-millers-in-negotiations-with-brazilian-partners-for-supply-of-400000-metric-tonnes-of-yellow-white-maize/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> that maize imports from Brazil will augment local produce and imports from South Africa.
The delivery of the maize is expected to start in July if the discussions are fruitful. Said Musarara:

This maize will complement our current supplies from local farmers and ongoing imports from South Africa.
We are aiming to procure and secure a circa 400,000 metric tonnes supply arrangement covering September 2024 to August 2025.
We are here to negotiate and conclude supplies to arrive in Zimbabwe starting at the end of July 2024.

During the 2023/24 summer cropping season, Zimbabwe recorded its worst harvest in four decades, consequentially putting millions at risk of hunger.
This has been attributed to El Nino, a weather event that often causes sporadic rainfall and scorching heat which has a debilitating impact on Zimbabwe’s largely rainfed agriculture.
Zimbabwe was the third country in Africa to declare this year’s drought a national disaster, following Malawi and Zambia.

Zimbabwean Grain Millers In Brazil To Source Maize

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) says it plans to import 1.4 million metric tonnes of maize from Mexico, Argentina and Brazil among others.
Addressing journalists in Harare on Thursday, GMAZ chairman Tafadzwa Musarara said they expect to import the maize between May and July 30 2024 using various entry points into the country. He said (<a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/zimbabwe-to-import-1-4-metric-tonnes-of-maize-from-brazil-argentina-as-hunger-bites/">via NewZimbabwe.com</a>):

We are aiming to bring in 1,4 million metric tonnes of maize between now and July 30, 2024, utilising all our frontiers. Beira port will dock maize shipments for the Eastern and Northern parts of the country.
Maputo will dock shipments into the Southern region of the country via Chicualacualla, and Durban will dock shipments into both the Southern and Northern regions.
Plumtree and Beitbridge will continue to provide gateway and expedited services for maize from South Africa.
We will be increasing our source countries to about 5, including Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Argentina, and America.

Musarara added that a GMAZ delegation will travel to Brazil to negotiate and conclude supply agreements of maize both white and yellow maize as well as rice. He said:

A GMAZ delegation will be in Sao Paulo and meeting members of the Associação Nacional dos Exportadores de Cereais (Brazilian Grain Exporters Association) to negotiate and conclude supply agreements of maize (White and Yellow) and rice.
Yellow Maize has a high nutrient content of Vitamin A. The delegation will also meet suppliers of industrial grain milling equipment.
It is prudent, and in the best national interest, to diversify our source countries so that we mitigate against the risks of ever-changing and unstable global geopolitics that continue to disrupt global commerce.

Zimbabwe has a grain deficit of over 680 000 metric tonnes mainly due to the El Nino-induced drought which disrupted the 2023/24 summer cropping season.

Grain Millers Announce Plans To Import Maize From Mexico, Argentina, And Brazil

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has urged Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Mthuli Ncube to reverse a 15% Value Added tax (VAT) introduced earlier this month saying the tax will push up the price of rice.
Ncube announced Statutory Instrument 15 of 2024 on 09 February.
In a statement, GMAZ President Tafadzwa Musarara also said the 15% VAT will result in untaxed rice processed in South Africa flooding the Zimbabwean market. Said Musarara:
<blockquote>
An imposition of VAT will increase the costs of 2kg rice from US$2.00 to US$2.30 or US$2.40.
Due to change complications, some retailers may end up pricing the same at US$3.00. This will weigh down heavily on consumer spending.
Rice in South Africa is VAT free and will land in Zimbabwe cheaper than locally-processed rice.
The local market will soon be dominated by prepacked rice imports putting in danger 2,800 local workers in the rice sector and also the massive infrastructure will be made redundant.
Consequently, government will not earn the intended revenue. We anticipate that VAT collection to be low, and the fiscus will lose employment related tax revenues due to the job losses.
</blockquote>
He said rice is the second most preferred food in Zimbabwe with a monthly consumption of 15 000 metric tonnes, and expected to rise to 22 500 by 2028. Said Musarara:
<blockquote>
Rice has favourable nutritional content than maize-meal as it is low in fat, cholesterol free and high in fibre.
It has a lower glycaemic index compared to maize-meal, thus keeping blood sugar more stable compared to maize meal.
This attribute is critical in the country’s fight against non-communicable diseases such as sugar diabetes.
Rice is gluten-free and ideal for persons with gastrointestinal health challenges.

Grain Millers Urge Mthuli Ncube To Reverse 15% Tax On Rice

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has said the country has enough maize supply to last it through an expected drought.
This comes after GMB acting operations director, Clemence Guta, told parliamentarians last week that the country has only four months’ supply of grain left in reserve.
However, this Wednesday, <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/zimbabweans-assured-of-adequate-maize-supply-ahead-of-expected-drought/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> reported GMAZ chairman Tafadzwa Musarara as saying the claim by GMB ” is incorrect, unfortunate, misleading, and regrettable”.
Musarara said millers, with government approval, imported over 200,000 tonnes of maize to add to local deliveries. He added:
<blockquote>
GMB appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Agriculture last week and claimed that the country is left with only four months’ cover of maize stocks.
This claim is incorrect, unfortunate, misleading, and regrettable. We wish to categorically re-state that the maize supply situation in the country is adequate and satisfactory and the country is indeed maize secure.
The milling industry, working under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, successfully secured substantial stocks in the region to complement local stocks.
This arrangement was motivated by the need to mitigate against the subsisting drought season.
We are continuing with maize imports and anticipate bringing in 200,000 metric tonnes of maize stocks in the first quarter of 2024, against a national requirement of 150,000 metric tonnes for the same period.
We confidently assure the consuming public of the availability of their maize meal supplies in all retail outlets nationwide.

The anticipated drought, a result of the ongoing El Nino which is associated with low rainfall, has pushed up the price of mealie meal.
A 10kg packet of maize, which normally costs $5, is now being sold for US$9.

Zimbabwe Is Maize Secure, Claims By GMB "Incorrect" and "Regrettable" - Grain Millers

Grain millers say they can supply enough maize meal to consumers to mitigate the El Niño-induced drought which is expected to reduce yields drastically.
Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) president Tafadzwa Musarara on Tuesday said they have imported more than 200 000 metric tonnes of maize since October last year. Musarara told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/business/article/200021866/weve-enough-stocks-to-meet-demand-millers">NewsDay</a>:
<blockquote>
The grain milling sector is fully geared to adequately provide maize meal during this current drought season. This is not the first time to encounter such adversity.
Our ability to import sufficient stocks of maize is on record. From mid-October 2023 to date, for instance, we imported 207 000 metric tonnes of maize. The activity continues.
</blockquote>
This comes after Harare experienced a shortage of mealie meal during the past several weeks.
The maize meal shortage was attributed to high demand during the holiday season, coupled with supply chain issues.
In response, the Government recently called an urgent meeting with different stakeholders to come up with a plan of action to ensure that mealie meal is available.
Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) president Denford Mutashu told NewsDay that mealie-meal deliveries have resumed in Harare. He said:

Deliveries only started on Saturday in the central business district and surrounding areas.
Today (on Monday), about 10 residential areas are receiving deliveries, for instance, Mabvuku, Mbare, Chitungwiza, Highfield, Glenview, Mufakose, Hatcliffe, Budiriro and Dzivaresekwa.
Deliveries are made through formal shops and CZR urges shop managers to not tarnish their brands by diverting the product to the black market as the mealie-meal is serialised.
</blockquote>
On 3 January 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce met key stakeholders, including various Government Agencies and the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe to deliberate on the maize supply situation in the country.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Sithembiso said grain millers expressed their commitment to supply the country with adequate maize meal.
She said the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) had also committed to avail and distribute maize to the millers through its various depots countrywide.

We Have Enough Maize Stocks To Meet Demand - Grain Millers

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has said large-scale retail shops are having low stocks of mealie meal because they want the product on credit terms.
GMAZ president Tafadzwa Musarara told <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/grain-millers-blacklists-shops-for-demanding-mealie-meal-on-credit/">State media</a> that millers are buying grain cash up-front from the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) therefore they cannot sell on credit terms to supermarkets.
Musarara said large retailers should pay cash upfront or at least cash-on-delivery to enable the millers to remain viable. He said:
<blockquote>
GMB requires us to pay 100 percent upfront for grain. In view of this, we are unable to give credit terms to anyone including the mainstream retail shops. This explains why stocks are low in these mainstream shops.
It is not disputed that the country has adequate supplies of maize and wheat and the milling industry’s capacity dwarfs demand.
The major challenge is the issue of exchange rates between the USD and the local currency.
</blockquote>
Musarara said millers were supplying all retailers using the Zimbabwe dollar price, and they had no control over the rate that shops use in their outlets.
He said the reason why mealie-meal was easily accessible in smaller outlets, was that they paid for deliveries upfront.
The Zimbabwe dollar has been in free-fall against major currencies in the past few weeks and on Tuesday, 06 June, the rate was $3 673 against the US dollar, down from $2 577 last week.
On the parallel market, the rate was reportedly between $4 500 and $6 000 depending on the amount being traded.

Grain Millers Refuse To Sell Mealie Meal On Credit

The shortage of mealie meal in large retail outlets such as supermarkets has been blamed on millers who are allegedly diverting the product to the streets and pavements where it is being sold strictly in foreign currency.
There is a shortage of mealie meal in major retail shops but the product is readily available on the informal market where consumers are being forced to buy using forex.
Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) chairman, Tafadzwa Musarara, requested to have questions from State media in writing but was yet to respond.
The Small-Scale Millers Association of Zimbabwe (SMAZ)  president, Davis Muhambi, told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/mealie-meal-diverted-to-black-market/">The Herald</a> that it was possible that millers have cut off the supply chain. Said Muhambi:
<blockquote>
I don’t want to be speculative but there is a great possibility that millers have cut off the supply chain.
The availability of mealie-meal and maize needs to be investigated thoroughly.
Millers could possibly be holding the commodity as they may deem that it is no longer sustainable to supply the commodity in RTGs as compared to US dollars.
There are a lot of technicalities involved, which may require them to keep afloat, as well as to make profits from their business.
</blockquote>
He urged the Government to urgently investigate the issue and ensure that sanity prevails.
Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers president, Denford Mutashu, said:
<blockquote>
Government should urgently look into this matter. In fact, it should step up and consider the recommendations that we made to them to arrest such a scenario.
Millers may and are possibly cutting off the supply due to the prevailing black-market rates.
Mealie-meal must be prioritised as an urgent matter as it will fuel an upsurge of other commodities.
Most commodities are readily available on the parallel market and in backyard kiosks where they are being sold at prices up to three times the official rate.
A 10 kg bag of maize meal sells for about US$6 as compared to the official price of the RTGs, which is between $15 000 and $20 000.
</blockquote>
This week the Zimbabwe dollar fell by nearly $700 to average $2 577 against the United States (US) dollar on the foreign currency auction held by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ).
On the parallel market, the greenback is reportedly changing hands at about Us$1:ZWL$3 500.

Millers Accused Of Diverting Mealie Meal To The Black Market

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) is importing at least 40 000 to 50 000 tonnes of maize every month from Zambia and South Africa to augment local supplies.
This was said by GMAZ chairperson Tafadzwa Musarara while speaking in an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200007882/were-importing-over-50-000t-of-maize-monthly-to-cover-local-supply-gmaz">NewsDay</a>. He said:
<blockquote>
We are currently importing about 40 to 50 000 tons of maize monthly from Zambia and South Africa. So this is helping us to supplement our local stocks.
Last farming season (2021-22), there was a huge investment in the farming of maize, but the rains affected the crop.
But we are happy that the whole programme (imports) is well choreographed in a way that our millers remain viable, the consumer continues to have their product and by-products for livestock are also available.
</blockquote>
Musarara said the Russia-Ukraine war has not negatively affected Zimbabwe’s wheat and maize supply. He said:
<blockquote>
The maize supply remains above adequate. On the wheat side, particularly flour, supply is dwarfed by demand.
The coincidence is that we got a harvest at a time when our biggest supplier was now engaged in a war.
In terms of the movement of grain, we have not been impacted negatively by the war. Prices have been stable, so we have survived it.

Grain Millers Importing 50 000 Tonnes Of Maize Monthly - GMAZ

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has warned that the ongoing side marketing of maize is threatening national food security and the operations of maize contractors.
In a statement, GMAZ chairperson Tafadzwa Musarara criticised the “greed” buyers who are reportedly buying maize at low prices for speculative purposes. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/agriculture/article/17094/maize-side-marketing-threatens-food-security-millers">He said:</a>
<blockquote>
The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe would like to denounce the ongoing side marketing of maize by unscrupulous buyers.
The unfortunate act of greed is now dislocating the contract farming financed by the government of Zimbabwe, the CBZ Agro Yield and the Food Crop Contractors Association.
The maize we have in the country, including the stock carryover, has to be complemented by imports in order to take us to the next harvest due to depressed yields as a result of poor rainfall.
</blockquote>
Musarara added that for the past two months the grain market has been characterised by “unbridled arbitrage, side marketing and, indeed, organised chaos”. He said:
<blockquote>
Cheap maize-meal imports have caused a glut on the market landing at a price of US$320 per tonne, cheaper than GMB maize price to millers of US$330 per tonne.
We are now worried that third parties are buying that maize for speculative reasons at low prices with the intention to sell it later at very high prices.
This act of profiteering has the potential to kill the current funding facility and stop it from revolving into the next season.

Earlier this year, GMAZ announced that it will import 400 000 tonnes of maize from Malawi and Zambia worth US$100 million to augment local supplies.
Zimbabwe requires 2.2 million tonnes of maize for human consumption (1.8 million) and stock feed (350 000 tonnes) per year.

Grain Millers Association Denounces Side Marketing Of Maize

The first batch of the 400 000 tonnes of maize imports purchased by the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) from Zambia and Malawi is expected in the country this week.
The grain will be coming from the Food Reserve Agency of Zambia and the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) of Malawi.
GMAZ chairperson Tafadzwa Musarara said 30 000 tonnes of maize will land in the country this week. Said Musarara:
<blockquote>
Everything is on course to bring into the country the maize millers are importing from Zambia and Malawi.
We are bringing in 30 000 tonnes in July and the first consignment is expected in the first week of July.
</blockquote>
Grain millers plan to import a total of 800 000 tonnes this year.
National Consumer Rights Association spokesperson Effie Ncube welcome the importation of grain, saying this will stabilise the price of mealie meal. Ncube said:
<blockquote>
The importation of grain is a welcome move. Many households already require food assistance since not all of them were able to harvest sufficient yields due to drought. Also, prices go up whenever a product is in short supply versus the high demand.
Therefore, it is important that together with bringing in more grain to assure food security, other measures are taken to arrest the cost of doing business and unethical business practices.

In May, GMAZ announced it would import US$100 million worth of grain after Cabinet in February invited private millers with free funds to complement local stocks.
The Grain Marketing Board (GMB) expects farmers to deliver 1.5 million tonnes during the ongoing marketing season against an annual national demand of 2.2 million tonnes.
Out of 2.2 million tonnes needed each year, 1.8 million tonnes are for human consumption and 350 000 tonnes are for livestock.

Maize Imports To Start Trickling In

Leader of Opposition in the Malawian Parliament, Kondwani Nankhumwa, wants a deal to sell maize to Zimbabwe by the country cancelled, in order to guarantee food security for Malawians.
Nankhumwa wrote a letter to President Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday, 8 June 2022, asking him to intervene and stop the sale of maize by the Agriculture Development Corporation (ADMARC) to the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ).
He said the sale of maize to Zimbabwe is unacceptable, especially considering that Malawi is already expecting a low yield this year. Wrote Nankhumwa:

I am writing you this letter to express my deepest annoyance following reports that the public grain marketing company, Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) is proceeding with the sale of 100,000 metric tonnes of maize to Grain Millers of Zimbabwe despite a recent assurance by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Honourable Sosten Gwengwe, that the maize would not be sold.
Mr President, you may be well aware that many experts, as well as ordinary Malawians, are against this sale of maize by ADMARC precisely because all indications are that many households are likely to face hunger this year due to an anticipated low yield.
… As the Head of State and Government, your primary responsibility is to ensure that Malawians are food secure aside from protecting them from other socio-economic challenges.
Let me, therefore, warn Your Excellency that the opposition shall hold you personally responsible for any loss of life to hunger as a result of the sale of this maize.

Nankhumwa also warned that he is prepared to seek legal redress on behalf of the people of Malawi should ADMARC go ahead with the sale.
According to reports, ADMARC is selling 100,000 metric tonnes of maize to GMAZ at the price of $22 million.

Industry and Commerce Deputy Minister, Raj Modi, says the Russia-Ukraine war has caused a rise in global fuel prices, a development that affects production lines, not only in Zimbabwe but across the whole world.
Last week the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) announced a 52 per cent and 31 per cent increase for mealie-meal and flour respectively.
A price of a 10kg bag of mealie-meal now costs ZWL$1 665 up from ZWL$1 099. The price of a tonne of flour rose from ZWL$164 523 to ZW$215 000. Said, Modi:

The justification for the increase is well known by everyone, it’s because of the war (Ukraine-Russia war).
The price of fuel, which is the lifeline for any production chain in any industry went up.
To import and transport any raw materials you need fuel.
It’s not only in Zimbabwe that food prices have gone up. It’s the world over.
However, if there was no war, we would not be talking of prices increases.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine which was launched on 24 February this year ostensibly to end an alleged genocide against Russian speaking communities in the Donbas (part of eastern Ukraine) and combat the rise of Fascism in its neighbour.
Crude oil prices rose because the world feared the war would lead the West to ban Russian oil.
Prices jumped to a 14-year high of $140 a barrel on 7 March. They have come down since then but only slightly.

Grain Millers Blame Price Hike On Russia's Invasion Of Ukraine

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has increased the price of a 10kg bag of roller meal by 52 per cent and the price of a tonne of wheat bread flour has been hiked by 32 per cent.
In a statement, GMAZ chairman Tafadzwa Musarara said the price increases came after the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) increased the price of maize and wheat. Reads the statement:

With effect from Monday 11 April 2022, the price of grain from Grain Marketing Board (GMB) to Millers went up.
Commercial white maize price increased by 50% to ZWD75,000 per metric tonne from ZWD 50,000 per metric tonne.
Wheat rose by 17.8% to ZWD 66,000.00 per metric tonne from ZWD56,000 per metric ton.
These increments are substantial and millers cannot absorb them. At its urgent virtual meeting on yesterday, the GMAZ Secretariat reported the following price movements;
a) 10 kg Roller Meal to increase by 52% to ZWD1, 665.00 from ZWD1,099.00
b) 1 tone of Wheat Bread flour to increase by 31% to ZWD 215,000 from ZWD 164,523 per metric tonne
These price increments are with immediate effect. However, individual millers and wholesale/retailers are free to negotiate price discounts.
The costs of packaging, labour, transport, electricity and imported wheat continue to militate against price stabilization efforts.
We assure the consuming public that our scientific computation model remains reasonable and justified and we have been restrained in our cost accumulation.
The milling industry remains most indebted to the Ministries of Agriculture, Finance and Industry for the ongoing engagements which are aimed at achieving affordability and availability of our products.
The subsisting global food inflation crisis is causing serious headwinds, and Zimbabwe is not spared.
Similar price increases in Maize Meal and Bread flour are also being experienced in other regional countries such as Botswana, South Africa et al.

Grain Millers Hike Mealie Meal Price By 52 Percent

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has reportedly secured alternative wheat sources following supply chain disruptions in Eastern Europe caused by the ongoing war involving the world’s biggest producers, Russia and Ukraine.
Ukraine and Russia supply 30% of wheat and 20% of maize to global markets, according to the World Food Programme.
According to GMAZ, almost 60% of wheat consumed in Zimbabwe comes from Russia and Ukraine.
GMAZ chairman Tafadzwa Musarara told The Standard that his organisation plans to import 180 000 tonnes of wheat to meet local demand from now until the next wheat harvest. He said:

We have been following the geopolitics in the Balkan area and the Russian/Ukraine war did not come as a surprise.
As a forward-looking organisation, we had secured other sources, notwithstanding the fact that the two countries which are at war are ranked number one (Russia) and number five (Ukraine) on the world wheat exporters and producers.
We are planning to have close to 180 000 tonnes of wheat imports that should see us between now and the next harvest. This is not only a Zimbabwean situation. It is a global crisis.

Musarara said GMAZ is in discussions with several suppliers from other countries to supply them with wheat.

Russia-Ukraine War: Local Millers Search For Alternative Wheat Sources

The Grain Millers Association Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has donated tonnes of foodstuffs to the ruling ZANU PF party for its 19th Annual National People’s Conference.
GMAZ chairman Tafadzwa Musarara on Saturday handed over a donation of 15 tonnes of mealie meal, 3 tonnes of rice and 4 000 loaves of bread to be distributed at the 19th Zanu PF annual people’s conference.
Musarara commended the agriculture policies set by the government for driving a flourishing grain milling industry. He said:
<blockquote>
It is public knowledge that the ministry works well with the President and we have supported his agriculture programmes since 2016, particularly Command Agriculture, where we came up with wholesale assistance to offtake whatever has been grown.
Those policies come from a political party and we are not ashamed to donate to the ruling party. We have been doing it for the past twenty years.

ZANU PF Mashonaland Central Chairman Kazembe Kazembe applauded the GMAZ for the donation.
Meanwhile, testing of the virtual platform to be used during the ZANU PF conference is underway and both centres in Bindura are now connected to fibre optic cables.

Musarara Donates Over 15 Tonnes Of Foodstuffs To ZANU PF

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has welcomed the ongoing clampdown on retail shops that are selling cheap imported mealie-meal saying the move would empower the local milling industry.
This comes after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), in conjunction with the Grain Marketing Board (GMB), on Friday launched a crackdown on shops that sell smuggled mealie meal.
Acting GMAZ general manager Garikai Chaunza said the blitz against the smuggling of maize meal will not benefit the milling industry only, but also farmers as GMB would be able to increase the uptake of maize. Said Chaunza:
<blockquote>We are happy as GMAZ that the government has listened to the industry’s concerns by enforcing the ban on imported mealie-meal which continues to be smuggled into the country at a time when the nation has a bumper maize harvest.
Besides empowering the local industry, the enforcement of the ban on imported mealie-meal greatly benefits the farmers by ensuring that they get their money in time for their maize grain deliveries to the Grain Marketing Board as the same would have also motivated an increased uptake of maize from the national granary.</blockquote>
Three weeks ago, GMAZ filed a complaint with the government resulting in the ongoing blitz, which started in Bulawayo last week.

Grain Millers Welcome Govt Crackdown On Smuggled Mealie Meal

Local grain millers are crying foul over the increase in cheaper brands of smuggled mealie-meal which they say continued to threaten the viability of the local milling industry.
Mealie-meal brands mostly from neighbouring Botswana and South Africa have flooded the local market, in spite of the existence of a Statutory Instrument that bars grain imports.
Several millers from the Southern Region who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com this past week said unless the government intervened, a lot of milling companies could be forced to shut down as some have already laid-off employees.
Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) Southern Region chairperson, David Moyo also confirmed to the publication that cheap mealie meal imports are suffocating the local milling industry. He said:
<blockquote>Here in Southern Region, we are facing difficulties in selling our mealie-meal due to the availability of imports from neighbouring countries.
We were hoping that since we had a bumper harvest this year, millers were going to manage to supply our market, but the retailers are resisting saying our mealie meal is too expensive compared to the one they are getting from the neighbouring countries.</blockquote>
Moyo urged the government to enforce Statutory Instrument 127 of 2020 to the latter as mealie-meal continues to flow from neighbouring countries in spite of the ban.

Cheap Mealie Meal Imports Suffocate Local Milling Industry

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) says the government has agreed to ban maize imports in order to ring-fence this year’s good harvest.
Addressing journalists in Bulawayo on Thursday, GMAZ chairperson Tafadzwa Musarara stated that the move was also meant to ensure the local market was protected for the benefit of local millers. Said Musarara:
<blockquote>In order to safeguard everything, we then agreed with the government that they are going to ban the importation of maize into the country.
Importation of maize meal and any other maize processed products is going to be banned.
This is meant to ring-fence our harvest and make sure that the market is protected for the local.</blockquote>
Musarara said GMAZ was working with the government to stop the side marketing of maize contract farmers.
The GMAZ boss also said they have engaged the government to ensure police roadblocks were set up on all major roads from feeder borders. He said:
<blockquote>We are aware of imports that might come from Zambia, South Africa, Mozambique and Malawi.
The whole region has received a bumper crop, so we are fully behind government in the setting up of roadblocks from the main feeder boarders and we will partly contribute financially to that programme as in funding the entire policing so that side marketing is killed.
Side marketing for the past decade has been affecting the successful implementation of contract farming in this country.
I am happy that government this time is coming very strongly so that our bumper harvest, our local agriculture is protected.</blockquote>

Government, Millers Agree On Maize Import Ban

The Grain Millers Association Of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has engaged the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Paul Mavima to block the workers’ intended salary protests.
GMAZ accuses the workers of intending to embark on protests before exhausting the available channels of resolving the conflict as stipulated by the Labour Act.
GMAZ national chairman Tafadzwa Musarara condemns the protests which he said were being planned when discussions between the parties were already underway to resolve the matter. Musarara said:
<blockquote>
One of the trade union parties to our collective bargaining UFFAWUZ wrote to us as the employer representative party advising of a dispute of interest between them and our representatives to the wage negotiation.
Regrettably, UFFAWUZ has threatened that they will be committing various acts of collective job action that will include demonstrations and picketing in gross violation of section 104 of the Labour Act as they did not provide us with adequate notice (14 days) as required by law.
</blockquote>
Musarara also wrote to UFFAWUZ expressing dismay over the labour group’s double standards exhibited when it called for protests at the same time claiming to be willing to negotiate. He said:

The confusion is arising from the fact that on one hand, you claim to be willing to engage for a progressive discussion and deliberation of the matter yet on the other end, you threaten a demonstration in violation of the law which compels you to provide a 14-days written notice coupled with sufficient cause for your need to take up the collective job action.

GMAZ Engage Minister To Stop Workers' Protests

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) says it welcomes the Monetary Policy Statement issued by Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor John Panonetsa Mangudya on 18 February.
In a statement, GMAZ chairman Tafadzwa Musarara said they welcomed the Central Bank’s decision of monetary easing as it will help in achieving single-digit inflation and arrest price increments, especially of basic goods. Said Musarara:
<blockquote>We are impressed that the Central Bank has taken the prudent decision of monetary easing, which is consistent with current practice by other progressive emerging economies.
In particular, we marvel at the craftiness around viable management of the forex auction system and placing money supply growth in regis mortis in order to achieve single-digit inflation and arrest price increments, especially of basic commodities.
The direction taken will, inter alia, achieve staple food pricing stability and consumer affordability.
This will, in the main, promote food security at both the household and national level. The promising bumper agricultural harvest will reduce import bill and reserve the foreign currency available to other key import essentials.
We commit ourselves to this statement and pledge our full support.</blockquote>

Grain Millers Welcome Monetary Policy Statement

Millers have proposed to pay farmers in USD as a way to empower the producers and possibly increase grains output, The Herald reports.
The matter came to light at a Bulawayo stakeholders meeting when GMAZ President Tafadzwa Musarara was answering questions from the media. Musara said they were having problems with the subsidy program and they had proposed to pay grains producers in USD to the government:
<blockquote>We have serious structural issues with our subsidy programme . . . why is it that we are the only one with  maize-meal shortage? It has to do with policy review and others.
We have also requested that millers be allowed to go and buy maize directly from farmers in either local currency or US dollars because some of the maize we are importing, we have been paying in US dollars using free funds.
We feel that those with free funds and doing other products like stockfeeds might want to use their funds and go outside Bulawayo, for example, and pay the local farmer in US dollars as compared to paying the local farmer in local currency yet we still remain importing and paying the foreign farmer in US dollars. We feel the Government must consider doing this  so that we promote our own farmers,</blockquote>
The government is the only exclusive buyer of maize produced in the country, despite giving millers with free funds the go ahead to import maize last year after the drought that ravaged the country.

Millers Seek Permission To Pay Farmers In USD

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) said that there is a shift in the country’s staple diet as the younger generation prefers rice and bread to sadza.
Speaking during a recent briefing with Bulawayo journalists, GMAZ National Chairman Tafadzwa Musarara said the milling industry should start to move towards the provision of more wheat products and rice.
Musarara observed that demand for wheat and rice was driven up by such consumption habits. He said:
<blockquote>If we are talking about vision 2030, young ones will now become the working class and would be eating rice and wheat – food that forms their diet.
What one eats from ages six months to 22 years informs your diet, for the rest of your life. In our case (in Zimbabwe) that’s what we have – young ones prefer rice and bread, so as a business we need to move towards that.</blockquote>
Musarara revealed that in 2005, Zimbabwe was only consuming 12 000 tonnes of rice per year but the figure has risen to 11 000 tonnes of rice per month.
He said the country requires between 2.2 million to 2.3 million loaves per day.
The demand for more bread and more confectionery biscuits and macaroni from flour means that Zimbabwe’s 15 million people require 450 000 tonnes of wheat annually, Musarara said.
Unfortunately, Zimbabwe is a net importer of both wheat and rice.

'Sadza Is Overrated', Younger Generation Prefers Rice And Bread

ZRP has reportedly arrested traders refusing the local to accept the currency the RTGS/Zimbabwe Dollar from customers for local transactions, The Herald reports. According to the publication, 7 traders have so far been arrested for rejecting the bond in favour of the USD.
The arrests were confirmed by ZRP National Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Paul Nyathi who emphasized the arrests will continue as long as traders reject the local currency:
<blockquote>The ZRP will ensure that all laws meant to protect the public and promote the effective maintenance of law and order in the country are enforced without fear or favour,</blockquote>
Traders are reportedly rejecting some notes and coins preferring the greenback or higher denominations. Meanwhile, GMAZ also warned retailers and wholesalers rejecting the local currency that it would stop supplying them with their products if they don’t stop the practice.

The government has reportedly failed to settle its dues with millers who are providing subsidised maize meal to the public under the subsidised mealie meal scheme, the Daily News reports. According to  GMAZ, that is the reason why there is a dire mealie meal shortage in the country right now.
Speaking to the publication, GMAZ PR manager Garikai Chaunza said millers have not been paid by the government;
<blockquote>There are currently substantial outstanding subsidy payments to millers that have to be paid by government. This has, consequently, severely affected their cash flow and the ability of millers to timeously pay for subsequent maize purchases. These late payments are haemorrhaging millers financially.
The maize allocations have not been done openly and transparently to GMAZ and this is making it difficult for the association to know which member has been allocated so that we facilitate offtake of GMB maize. This is a matter of public interest and the sale of this state-funded maize must be an open book.
We also appeal to the authorities that the allocations of maize be done according to the miller’s ability to purchase and their milling capacities to process the maize.</blockquote>
When contacted for comment, Industry and Commerce Minister Sekesai Nzenza said the subsidy will continue for another 2 months and the government will put measures in place to counter hoarding of subsidised mealie meal and smuggling of cheaper maize-meal.

Govt Fails To Pay Millers For Subsidized Mealie-Meal

The government has raised the roller meal subsidy from $73.90 to $216.15 The Herald reports. This was revealed by the Industry and Commerce Minister Sekesai Nzenza who said this in a statement:
<blockquote>Cognisant of the Covid-19 pandemic, Government is committed to ensure that the prices of basic commodities, especially roller meal, should remain within the reach of the vulnerable.</blockquote>
Nzenza also said the government will continue to review the subsidy while consulting stakeholders. GMAZ on another note welcomed the new subsidy with open arms. GMAZ spokesperson Garikai Chaunza spoke to the publication and said:
<blockquote>GMAZ welcomes the decision by the Government to extend the subsidy programme, especially during this lockdown period.
The announcement of the review of the subsidy announced by the minister, however, captures costs as at before 8 June, and we, on Wednesday 10 June, submitted current costing(s) and computations for a further upward review of the subsidy.
We are happy that the Minister is committed to engaging the industry and we confirm that we have cordial relations with her ministry, which is our parent ministry and all the government departments.</blockquote>
Mealie meal shortages have disadvantaged consumers who are buying mealie meal from retailers who are selling it in US Dollars or the prevailing black market rate for those who want to pay using the local currency.

Govt In A 290% Mealie Meal Subsidy Hike

ZRP countrywide has arrested 47 truck drivers for carrying passengers in their trucks thereby violating COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, The Herald reports.
This was after Police National Traffic Unit was deployed to look into the matter which resulted in over 40 truck drivers arrested after they were found to be breaking the law.
The arrests were confirmed by ZRP National spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who said:
<blockquote>Since March 30 to date, a total of 47 truck drivers have been arrested. We are, however, warning haulage truck and private vehicle drivers who are ferrying people between cities, within cities, and even some border jumpers that it is a criminal offence.
Besides being a criminal offence, this act poses a risk to the Government’s efforts to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
Police checkpoints, roadblocks and patrols have been activated to account for such drivers. Haulage trucks should stick to their mandate of transporting cargo from one point to the other. Transport companies are implored to take action against errant drivers.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, GMAZ has also warned truck drivers who are bringing Maize from South Africa who are travelling with female companions and their wives that it is unaccepted behaviour:
<blockquote>The Government of Zimbabwe has communicated its concerns to us with regards the conduct of most of your truck drivers who tend to travel in pairs with the opposite gender outside the scope of their duties and also carry passengers for monetary benefit.
While the country critically requires maize imports to address national food security, the aforesaid conduct cannot be tolerated and condoned as it militates against the national effort in combating the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.</blockquote>

ZRP Arrests 47 Truck Drivers For Violating Lockdown Restrictions

Tafadzwa Musarara after appearing before Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Lands and Agriculture made claims that the Gokwe Nembudziya Legislator Justice Wadyajena was bitter after he could not secure a contract and he is using parliament to settle personal scores, Newsday reports.
This was after Musarara and Wadyajena had a verbal exchange in parliament in which Musarara threatened to walk out and Wadyajena kept pushing for answers after he claimed that Musarara had received money from the RBZ to import grain through his company but was claiming the money went to GMAZ.
After the session Musarara said this to journalists:
<blockquote>He (Wadyajena) was looking for a transport contract because the chairman of the Lands and Agriculture Committee has a transport company. That is why we said he must be recused from chairing because he is conflicted.</blockquote>
Wadyajena however declined ever looking for a contract to transport grains from Musarara.

Wadyajena Is Using Parly To Settle Personal Scores After Failing To Secure A Grains Transportation Contract - Musarara

Millers reportedly want a 10kg bag of subsidised mealie meal to be sold to consumers for $260, Newsday reports. This was revealed in a leaked letter from Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) general manager Lynnette Veremu to the association’s national executive committee. Part of the leaked letter reads:
<blockquote>The new price of maize has been revised upwards without increasing current subsidy of $72 per 10 kg bag. Should millers proceed to adjust prices of maize meal accordingly at the current subsidy level, the new prices will be, miller to retail, $230,61 and retail to customers, $260,59.
The price of maize has moved from $6 958 00 from Grain Marketing Board to $12 329.72 which is a 77,2% upward movement.</blockquote>
This comes after GMAZ recently announced that they were running out of maize stocks.

Millers Want The Price Of A 10kg Bag Of Subsidised Mealie Meal Increased From$72 To $260 - Report

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe has embarked on a campaign aimed at raising foreign currency to import grains New Zimbabwe reports.
This was revealed by GMAZ Chairman Tafadzwa Musarara who was speaking in Epworth during the mealie meal distribution exercise in the area.
Said Musarara:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe receives about US$90 million in remittances per month. Private sector needs about 80 000 tonnes of maize to feed the commercial market which is equivalent to US$25 million.
We are appealing to our fellow citizens in the diaspora. We will be approaching them very soon to assist us in crowd funding for the sale of maize. We have some of them who are still remitting funds into Zimbabwe maybe through purchase of a car or some other assets into Zimbabwe for resale so that they can get a premium.</blockquote>
