The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has declared ZANU PF’s Tsitsi Tranquility Tawomhera the winner of the Glen View South by-election held on Saturday, 12 April.
Tawomhera secured 3,404 votes, defeating three independent candidates — Toenderai Chakaredza (993 votes), George Makwangwaidze (681), and Tungamirai Madzokere (234) — as well as National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) candidate Perpetua Mukanda, who managed only 77 votes. There were 44 rejected ballots.
As with most by-elections, voter turnout was low, at 17.2% of Glen View South’s registered voter population of 31,519, according to ZEC constituency elections officer Killian Gambe.
The seat, previously held by Grandmore Hakata (CCC), became vacant following his death. It had been under opposition control since 2000.

ZANU PF's Tawomhera Wins Glen View South By-Election

ZANU PF Secretary for Youth Affairs, Tino Machakaire, expressed confidence that the ruling party will secure a victory in the upcoming by-election for the Glen View South National Assembly seat, set for April 12.
Machakaire made his remarks at a campaign rally organised by the ZANU PF Youth League at Chemhanza Grounds in Glen View South on Friday, March 28.
The event saw hundreds of supporters and senior party members come together to rally behind the ZANU PF candidate, Tsitsi Tawomhera.
Machakaire, who was the guest of honour, told the crowd that opposition political parties have failed the electorate and that ZANU PF is the party capable of righting those wrongs. Said Machakaire:

The opposition led councillors have failed to deliver for the people who voted them into office, especially those in urban areas. In Glen View South, sewage is gushing on people’s door steps, which is a health time bomb to the people. Only ZANU PF will end all the challenges for the people.
We cannot afford to lose the seat if we have proper structures in the constituency. With the level of development which is being carried across the country by the Government under the leadership of President Mnangagwa, the electorate will vote for ZANU PF.
The Government is currently working on rehabilitating roads in the area, capacitating youth with ICT skills, and drilling boreholes to ensure access to clean water for residents.

Tawomhera will face stiff competition from four other candidates: Perpetua Mukanda from the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), as well as independent candidates Chakeredza Tonderai, Tungamirai Madzokere, and George Makwangwaidze.
The Glen View South seat became vacant following the passing of Gladymore Hakata, a member of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party.
The CCC has opted not to nominate a candidate for the by-election due to an ongoing struggle for control within the party between Sengezo Tshabangu and Welshman Ncube, leaving uncertainty over who is actually in charge.

ZANU PF is very confident that they will win the upcoming election in Glen View South on April 12. They had a rally with many supporters and ZANU PF leaders. They believe the opposition parties have not done a good job and only ZANU PF can fix things. The ZANU PF candidate, Tsitsi Tawomhera, will have competition from four other candidates. The seat became empty when someone from another party passed away. Another party isn't sure who is in charge, so they aren't putting up a candidate. ZANU PF is promising to fix problems like sewage and provide clean water if they win.

Newly-elected legislator for Glen View South National Assembly constituency, Vincent Tsvangirai, says the desire to alter the country’s violent political landscape and to finish what her sister started pushed him into joining politics.
Vincent (24) is the son of the late MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai and brother to Vimbai Tsvangirai Java, the late former Glen View South MP.
In an interview with Open Parly, Tsvangirai asserted that he wants to see things changing. He said:
<blockquote>So the reason I entered into politics was a culmination of all these years of seeing people who were beaten, people with machete wounds on their heads, coming home bleeding and also the death of my sister. So there was also that part of me that was like I want to finish off what she had started in Glen View.
So it was a culmination of seeing my sister what she did and also growing up what we had seen I want to change the political landscape because I don’t think going forward especially for my generation and a lot of generations behind me we can’t have the situation keep going on like this because we will waste more generations if we keep going on in the situation that we have in Zimbabwe so that is what prompted me to take up the challenge and to also stand for the people of Glen View South. I want to see things changing.</blockquote>

Tsvangirai: I Want To See Things Changing

Reports indicate that the MDC Alliance’s candidate in the Glen View South parliamentary by-election, Vincent Tsvangirai, has won the seat.
According to Open Parly, Tsvangirai polled 3 474 votes, while the ZANU PF candidate garnered 1 534 votes.

Tsvangirai Wins Glen View South National Assembly Seat

The Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T party has decided against fielding a candidate in the Glen View South National Assembly by-lection.
According to the party’s vice president, Obert Gutu, the decision was made in honour of the late MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai.
Tsvangirai’s son, Vincent, is representing the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa who succeeded the former trade union leader as party president.
Writing on social media, Gutu, who is an outspoken critic of the MDC Alliance, said:
<blockquote>Nomination Court for Glen View South by-election sat on Friday, July 26, 2019. MDC-T decided not to field a candidate because we found it unconscionable to field a candidate to contest against Vincent Tsvangirai, son of our late iconic leader, Dr.Morgan Tsvangirai… MHDSRIEP</blockquote>
The Glen View South seat fell vacant following the death of Tsvangirai’s daughter, Vimbai Tsvangirai Java who succumbed to injuries she sustained in a road traffic accident in May.

MDC-T Will Not Contest Glen View South Seat To Honour Tsvangirai

The ruling ZANU PF party is targeted to make Glen View South constituency the second seat it holds in Parliament after Harare South.
A by-election for the constituency is set to be held in September following the death of sitting MP Vimbai Tsvangirai Java (MDC Alliance).
ZANU PF Political Commissar, Victor Matemadanda told the people of Glen View that their problems will be a thing of the past if they voted for the ruling party.
Addressing party supporters during a tour of the constituency, Matemadanda said:
<blockquote>There is no reason for residents to experience water problems, President Mnangagwa acquired borehole equipment which was distributed in all the country’s provinces and will resolve water woes, especially in urban areas.
Here in Glen View, we are going to resuscitate other boreholes which have broken down and drill new ones in strategic points to address the water situation in this area.</blockquote>
He also promised the residents that his party will engage the council to regularise Dare Rechimurenga Housing Cooperative. He said:
<blockquote>I understand that there are residents who had settled as a cooperative here in Glen View since 2014. As Zanu-PF party, we are going to engage relevant authorities very soon to facilitate the regularisation of Dare Rechimurenga Housing Cooperative as well as to assist other residents who are failing to get title deeds since 1980.
I promise, you must expect action soon, people should not stay for such a long time without papers which show that they are owners of properties.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, ZANU PF will be represented by Offard Muchuwi while the MDC Alliance will be represented by Vincent Tsvangirai, son to the late MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai.

ZANU PF Targets Glen View South Seat

The MDC led by Nelson Chamisa said that it will open the Glen View South constituency to contest following the death of sitting MP, Vimbai Tsvangirai-Java who was a daughter to founding part President Morgan Tsvangirai.
This was confirmed to New Zimbabwe.com by MDC secretary-general Chalton Hwende on Thursday. Said Hwende:
<blockquote>We will soon be calling for a primary election and that seat is not reserved but open for contestation by any of our members who meet the minimum requirements to stand as a Member of Parliament.</blockquote>
Before the 2018 harmonised elections, Chamisa deliberately reserved Glen View South constituency in Harare to Tsvangirai’s daughter.
Reports have suggested that former MP for the constituency, Paul Madzore is in the driving seat to win the primary vote.
Contacted for comment by the publication, Madzore did not give anything away. He said:
<blockquote>I will wait to hear what the people of Glen View want. I will respect their position
Remember, I had totally put all my weight behind our late Honourable Vimbai to see her succeed in executing her mandate and this was really not in my mind at all.
I will however consult but not campaign. I feel the people of this constituency deserve a person they freely elect or choose. So if I am invited, yes it’s the home I know best.</blockquote>
It is thought that Harare councillor Tonderai Chakaredza, party district chairperson Wilbert Mubonderi and district secretary Joshua Pedzisayi will challenge Madzore in the anticipated primary election.
