Harare City Council has said the Mupedzanhamo flea market in the Mbare suburb of Harare is now overpopulated due to high unemployment that has pushed citizens to informal trade.
Council spokesperson Innocent Ruwende said the local government authority would relocate some of the vendors from Mupedzanhamo to new sites. He told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200002209/mupedzanhamo-overpopulated-council">NewsDay</a>:

Our plan is to relocate vendors to new sites. As council, we will only look at humanitarian issues such as sanity and other necessities at the marketplaces. We are aware that most people are now into vending because there is unemployment in the country. It is unfortunate that there are people who then go on to harass vendors, using politics to cover up for their criminal activities. Such situations are beyond our control and that is why you see the police coming in to ensure there is calmness in Mbare.

A few weeks ago, Ruwende said the council’s informal sector committee recently made <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/mupedzanhamo-fire-zanu-pf-member-dies-in-violent-clashes/">a resolution to regularise some of the unofficial markets</a>, a move that would provide a lasting solution whilst also benefiting the local authority.
He said the Small and Medium Enterprises committee recently toured prospective vending sites in Crowborough North, Mufakose, Glen View, and Sunningdale.
This comes amid <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/vending-tables-clothes-at-mupedzanhamo-flea-market-set-on-fire/">conflict between ZANU PF and opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activists over control of the market.</a>
Chairperson of the Small to Medium Enterprises Committee <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Denford_Ngadziore">Denford Ngadziore</a> said Mupedzanhamo and Glen View area 8 were overpopulated hence the need for the city fathers to create 3 000 informal traders’ markets at Mbare and at Chishawasha markets. 
He said the target was to create over 10 000 market spaces before March 2023.
Mupedzanhamo has the capacity to accommodate slightly above 1 000 traders.

Harare Looking For Alternative Sites As Mupedzanhamo And Glen View Area 8 Are Overpopulated

Glen View Area 8 ZANU PF political commissar Clever Makotore has claimed that the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) was behind the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/fire-guts-glenview-home-industry-complex-again/">fire which gutted the Glen View Area 8 Home Industries complex</a> in Harare on Sunday.
The fire destroyed property worth thousands of United States dollars. Makotore said:
<blockquote>
There have been strong suspicions politics could be at play because every time there is a fire we see council coming in trying to evict people and take over. This complex was given to the people by ZANU PF and we know that the CCC doesn’t want our party in here and they will use these excuses to push us out.
</blockquote>
Complex chairperson Claudius Mtongwizo also blamed the opposition for the chaos at the complex. Mtongwizo said:

As you know the council is run by the opposition but this complex by Zanu PF, so the opposition wants excuses to take over this complex. If they want to fix anything they can do it while we are there, they do it in phases otherwise we are not going anywhere. This complex belongs to us and the party (ZANU PF).

But CCC local councillor <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Denford_Ngadziore">Denford Ngadziore</a> denied claims that the opposition was behind the arson. He said:

These are the space barons who are resisting council to put in fire hydrants and other necessary essentials for their benefit and safe operating environment. Despite their protests, there is no going back on the council’s plans to ensure there is sanity.

Council spokesperson Innocent Ruwende also said there was no politics at play urging property owners to vacate so that the local government authority can do proper planning for the place. 
Ruwende also said that there is a need for road access and hydrants adding that the fire brigade can’t even access the area as it stands.

ZANU PF Blames CCC For Fires At Glen View Area 8 Home Industries Complex

Glen View North MP, Fani Munengami (MDC Alliance) has castigated the government for allegedly failing to address recurring fires at Glen View Area 8 Furniture Complex.
The complex was established in 2000 by the government and accommodates small to medium enterprises.
Furniture worth thousands of dollars has been lost in the fires and a suspected electrical fault ignited an inferno on 7 September 2022.
Speaking in Parliament recently, Munengami said that if the root cause of the Glenview 8 Furniture Complex fires is not addressed, lives could be lost. He said:

I stand up with a burning issue which I believe if it is not resolved, might end up in the loss of lives.
Every year in Glen View Area 8, at the Home Industries where a lot of furniture is manufactured, there are fire outbreaks.
Nothing has been done so far by Government to intervene so that fires are prevented.
As I am speaking, 80% of the complex was razed down.
We are grateful that there was no loss of life but Glen View Area 8 residents and other people who work in that area are not able to work at the moment.

On Sunday, 09 October 2022, another devastating fire engulfed the complex and destroyed property worth thousands of dollars.
Munengami expressed disappointment that the Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small And Medium Enterprises Development, Sithembiso Nyoni, failed to visit the complex in the aftermath of the fire that broke out last month. He said:

I spoke to the Minister of Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to come and inspect Glen View Area 8 before we have a national disaster because there is a service station next to the complex.
Every year there are fire outbreaks but we do not know whether it is arson or what, but we know that there are cotton sacks, planks, wood shavings and other things which are highly flammable.
If this is left unattended, one day we will end up losing lives.
So my request is that the Minister of SMEs should visit the complex and other stakeholders.
However, the Hon. Minister is not visiting the complex. We do not know how we can be helped with this issue.

As Harare City SMEs Committee Chairperson I am in Glenview Area 8 complex with the local Councillor Charles Chidhagu. 
Thousands of properties have been destroyed by the fire. Very soon we are planning to temporarily relocate carpenters from Glenview Area 8 complex to Glenview 1 Home Industry so that the City can replan and redesign the complex to avoid &amp; minimize future fire outbreaks.
Carpenters and Firebrigade have been facing a challenge in putting out the fire because they work with thinners, sawdust, paints and cotton wool. 
I am calling upon carpenters and other stakeholders to comply with council so as to avoid future fire outbreaks. 
This week we will have stakeholders meeting for a permanent solution towards the perennial fire outbreak at the Complex. 
Part of the plan is to put necessary fire hydrants and road access for the Firebrigade inside the complex.

A fire broke out at Harare’s Glenview Home Industry Complex on Sunday afternoon and destroyed property worth thousands of dollars.
The Glenview Area 8 Furniture Complex experienced another devastating fire incident just over a month ago, on 7 September 2022, which was reportedly caused by an electrical fault.
Some carpenters who spoke to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/just-in-fire-guts-glenview-home-industry-again/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> claimed that an elderly man was preparing his field this Sunday and started a fire which then spread into the complex.
Reports suggest that approximately half of the complex has been destroyed, with houses close to the complex in Glenview’s Area 8 suburb almost catching fire. A carpenter who declined to be identified was quoted as saying:

About half of the complex has been destroyed. We could not save most of the property because the fire spread rapidly.
The firefighters rushed to the complex and managed to put out the fire.
However, this time it was too bad because several houses close to the complex almost got burned down.

Last month, the Harare City Council said it was going to investigate the possibility of arson in the recurring fires at the Furniture Complex.
In a statement released a day after the fire incident, City of Harare SMEs Committee Chairperson, Councillor Denford Ngadziore, said the local authority could consider temporarily relocating carpenters so that fire prevention work can be done at the complex to prevent future fires.

Fire Guts Glenview Home Industry Complex, Again

ZANU PF parliamentary aspirant for Glen View North, Martin Mambo, has said frequent fire outbreaks at the Glen View 8 furniture complex can be prevented if devolution funds were used to build proper structures.
His views come after a fire <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/glen-view-furniture-complex-catches-fire-again/">engulfed the home industry last week Wednesday night</a>, destroying valuable property.
Last Wednesday’s fire outbreak was said to be the 12th since 2012, and the third this year, at the complex.
Each time a fire breaks out, hundreds of enterprising Zimbabweans lose their products such as newly made sofas, wardrobes, kitchen units and beds.
A lot of the entrepreneurs do not have insurance and when a fire devours their products, they have to start afresh.
Mambo said fire outbreaks at the complex were of concern to the local residents and the SMEs and called for the construction of proper structures to prevent future fire outbreaks. He told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/glen-view-complex-needs-proper-structures/">The Herald</a>:

Devolution funds should be disbursed to build proper structures for these people if we are to avoid future fire outbreaks.
These people need to work in a complex that is conducive, well-established and with proper infrastructure that is demarcated for everyone.

Entrepreneurs have since appealed to the Government to help them to restart their businesses after their products were reduced to ashes.

ZANU PF Aspiring MP Says Frequent Fire Outbreaks At Glen View Furniture Complex Can Be Prevented

Glen View Complex caught fire this Wednesday with the cause of the fire not yet known.
Earground reporter, Plot Mhako said this is probably the 5th or 6th time the furniture centre has been destroyed by “mysterious” fire.

On the third time, reports indicated that two-thirds of the complex were destroyed in the inferno. 
The fire brigade is said to have arrived without adequate water and the problem was exacerbated by the fact that there was no water in the whole Glen view area. Harare Fire Brigade divisional officer Mr Clever Mafoti back then said they only managed to prevent the fire from reaching the service station.
