Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Bulawayo senator Gideon Shoko has been arrested by Criminal Investigations Department Law and Order detectives in Bulawayo, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200030351/former-ccc-senator-shoko-arrested">NewsDay</a>.
Shoko’s arrest coincides with the government’s intensified crackdown on dissenting voices, aimed at preventing potential demonstrations during the upcoming Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit scheduled for August 17.
CCC spokesperson Promise Mkhwananzi confirmed Shoko’s arrest to NewsDay. He said:

Government has suspended the bill of rights without the due support of parliament. (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa must declare that he has suspended the constitution.
</blockquote>
When contacted for comment, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Bulawayo Province, Inspector Abednico Ncube, professed ignorance of the arrest.
Details of the charges against Shoko were yet to be divulged.
Shoko is one of the CCC senators who were recalled by Sengezo Tshabangu, an activist who seized control of the opposition party soon after the 2023 general elections.
Tshabangu expelled scores of CCC Members of Parliament and councillors whom he did not favour, replacing them with his own allies.

Statement by MDC Alliance Secretary for Labour Gideon Shoko in commemoration of International Workers’ Day.
Comrades and friends,
On this day, we recognise and appreciate the hard work and resilience that workers have shown under extremely difficult conditions.
Workers have had to bear the brunt of the harsh effects of a terrible pandemic compounded by a socio-political environment that is hostile to the rights and interests of the working class.
Wages have been eroded, particularly those of our teachers and frontline health workers. Working conditions have deteriorated. Job security is at an all-time low.
Mr Mnangagwa’s regime continues to violate workers rights with impunity. This is why Zimbabwe has been on the ILO agenda for violating workers’ rights for more than 10 years.
Our poor record has rendered us among the worst in the world, alongside Sudan and Burma on the issue of violating workers’ rights.
The Covid19 pandemic has presented unique challenges for workers. The few who are still employed work with inadequate personal protection equipment (PPE), inadequate or no medical aid cover, poor salaries that have been eroded by triple-digit inflation, policy inconsistencies from Government on the economy and the curtailment of the right to strike and fight for fair labour standards as enshrined in the Constitution.
To make matters worse, corruption and mismanagement of national resources continue unabated. Unemployment has exceeded 90% with no effort being made to address the joblessness crisis.
All this is taking place when the Tripartite Negotiating Forum, the platform where labour matters must be discussed and addressed has been rendered moribund.
We endorse the theme for this year’s May Day by the ZCTU which calls for an intensification of the fight for political, economic and social justice.
In line with our People’s Agenda, we call for the restoration of labour rights in all sectors of the economy, the introduction of policies that create jobs and the implementation of economic policies that enable workers to earn a living wage.

MDC Alliance Statement On International Workers' Day

The leader of the Labor Economists Afrikan Democrats (LEAD) Linda Masarira has thrown her weight behind the leader of the MDC-T, Thokozani Khupe who is been accused of using her political muscle to take revenge on her former lover.
Khupe recently recalled Gideon Shoko, an MDC Alliance senator who allegedly fathered her child, for siding with her nemesis, Nelson Chamisa in the MDC leadership wrangle.
The move was viewed by some as Khupe’s way to take revenge on her ex-lover. Masarira was clearly not amused by comments on Khupe’s gesture. She said:
<blockquote>This is the highest level of mediocrity, misogyny &amp; idiocy. I have never seen anyone bring up past lovers of male politicians in Zimbabwe. This trend is getting out of hand &amp; its time that <a class="link-complex" href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23ZimWomenPoliticians" rel="hashtag noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ZimWomenPoliticians</a> unite to stop this nonsense. There is nothing for women without women.</blockquote>
The use of Khupe’s private life suggests how nasty the leadership crisis in the MDC which started shortly before the demise of the party’s founding leader, Morgan Tsvangirai has become.
Khupe recently sought the services of the army and police to oust MDC Alliance from the Harvest House christened Morgan Tsvangirai House.
The power wrangle reportedly started with “Tsvangirai’s unconstitutional appointment of Nelson Chamisa and Elias Mudzuri” to be his vice presidents and was worsened by “Chamisa’s eventual usurpation of power from Khupe who was the legitimate heir to the throne.”
Despite the presence of legal frameworks which promote the participation and inclusion of women in politics and administrative issues, very few women make it to the top echelons of power due to a number of issues including lack of funding and public perception, both a result of a patriarchal society still prevailing in the country.
Joyce Mujuru, the former vice president of Zimbabwe, stands out as one case that gave hope that the country was moving towards the inclusion of women in decision making positions in the public sector.

Trade unions have expressed anger over the expulsion of the MDC Alliance’s Gideon Shoko from Senate by the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe.
According to NewZimbabwe.com, Shoko and Khupe had a romantic relationship some years ago which led to the birth of a baby girl.
Ian Makoshori, the Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (ZIBAWU) argued that Khupe should have considered the upkeep of their child before firing Shoko. Said Makoshori:
<blockquote>We are very disgruntled as activists in the labour movement because these two met and dated during their time in unionism, but today Khupe is using her influence to harass a father to her own child.
Where does she think Shoko will get money for the upkeep of their child if she behaves like this?</blockquote>
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Peter Mutasa characterised MDC-T leaders as hypocrites who were dumping their former colleagues. Mutasa said:
<blockquote>It is an unexpected vicious attack by a group that hypocritically projects itself as labour activists.
We never expected that they will go to such low levels and recall our immediate past deputy general secretary.
That shows a serious lack of respect and unmitigated hate of the labour movement.</blockquote>
Khupe, alongside the late MDC founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai and other officials, left the ZCTU to join politics before forming the MDC in 1999.
Meanwhile, Shoko was a senator in the Bulawayo Metropolitan and was among eight MDC Alliance senators expelled from Parliament Wednesday.
