Over 90 people were killed and 50 others injured after a fuel tanker overturned and sparked an explosion in Jigawa state, Nigeria on Tuesday.
According to police spokesperson Lawan Adam, the accident occurred past midnight when the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle while travelling on a highway close to a university. He said:

At about 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Majia Town, Taura local government area of Jigawa, the tanker driver lost control near Khadija University and it exploded.
The driver left Kano and was heading to Nguru in Yobe when the accident happened.
We are worried that in spite of police warnings for people to steer clear from scenes of accidents involving fuel tankers, they still engage in such acts.
People gathered around the accident scene, which is the reason for the mass casualty.

As reported by <a href="https://www.africanews.com/2024/10/16/nigeria-gasoline-tanker-explosion-kills-90-injures-50-police/">africanews</a>, deadly tanker accidents are common in Nigeria, where traffic regulations are not strictly enforced and there is a lack of efficient transportation infrastructure like railways to move cargo.
It is also common for people to rush to the scene of such accidents to salvage fuel, especially given Nigeria’s high fuel prices.
Residents rushed to the overturned tanker to scoop up fuel, which “sparked a massive inferno that killed 94 people on the spot,” according to the police spokesperson.
Videos from the scene showed a massive fire and what appeared to be bodies scattered across the area.

Nigeria Fuel Tanker Explosion Kills 90, Injures 50

Police have warned motorists travelling along the Harare-Bulawayo highway that the road has been blocked by a petrol-laden haulage truck trailer near Karina fuel service station in Norton.
In a statement, ZRP has advised motorists to use alternative routes and the diversion roads created in order to clear the blockage. Reads the statement:

The ZRP reports a road traffic in On Christcident which occurred on 25/12/22 at around 0745 hours at the 39 km peg along Harare –Bulawayo Road, Near Karina Garage Norton.
The second trailer of a petrol tanker, with 24 000 litres of petrol, unhooked leading to road blockage.
The Police, Fire Brigade, Vehicle Examination Department and Environmental Management Agency are at the scene clearing the road.
Motorists travelling along Bulawayo-Harare towards Norton, are advised to use alternative routes and the diversion roads created in order to clear the blockage.
Drivers are urged to cooperate with police officers controlling traffic at the scene as movements are slow.

Petrol-laden Fuel Tanker Blocks Harare-Bulawayo Highway On Christmas Day

A man was killed instantly when a fuel tanker trailer belonging to Segment of Glory Energy he was welding exploded along Sherwood Crescent in Waterfalls in Harare on Monday.
Eyewitnesses told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/welder-killed-in-fuel-tanker-explosion/">The Herald</a> that the welder was on top of the trailer while sealing a leak that had developed on the tanker.
The body was removed from the scene but workers at the depot continued with business.
The workers referred all the questions to their employee Justice Madzimure who expressed ignorance over the issue.
Madzimure said he was not the owner of the haulage company.
An eyewitness who refused to be named said they heard an explosive sound coming out of the depot and then saw the body of the welder lying in the yard of the next depot where it was thrown. Said the eyewitness:

The man was on top of the fuel tank trailer welding it and everything seemed to be going on well.
He asked if the sadza I was cooking was ready so that he could come and buy it when he was done.
Moments later we were terrified by the explosive sound of the fuel tanker. The man was thrown into this yard (next depot) where he died instantly.
When the fuel tanker trailer exploded some people ran away because they thought it was a bomb, but after the explosion, some came back to see what had transpired.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson assistant commissioner Paul Nyathi said he was yet to receive a report from police officers who attended the scene.

A Zambian fuel tanker carrying diesel involved in an accident a few metres from a service station. Stopped a few meters from a house after several of its right tyres burst. The accident occurred this Sunday morning in Sunridge, Harare, along Harare Drive.
