A total of US$3 620 180 870 has been allotted to businesses on the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s foreign exchange auction since the inception of the system in 2020. In a statement seen by Pindula News, RBZ governor, John Panonetsa Mangudya said:

<h2>FOREIGN EXCHANGE AUCTION ALLOTMENTS FOR OCTOBER 2022 AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE PAYMENTS FOR THE PERIOD JANUARY TO OCTOBER 2022</h2>
In line with its commitment to regularly keep the public informed of developments in the foreign exchange market, the Bank hereby advises that: –
1. The sum of US$39 184 168 was allotted to 139 beneficiaries under the Main Foreign Exchange Auction during the month of October 2022 and the sum of US$4 665 995 was allotted to 296 beneficiaries under the SMEs Foreign Exchange Auction during the month of October 2022.
2. Total foreign exchange payments for the period January 2022 to October 2022 were US$6 776 525 337 broken down as follows:-
(i) foreign currency accounts (US$5 600 214 629); 
(ii) Foreign Exchange Auction Allotments (US$1 023 800 057); and 
(iii) the interbank market (US$152 510 650).
3. The bulk of the auction allotments during the month of October 2022 (67%) was for payment for raw materials (US$18 187 311) and machinery and equipment (US$11 283 105), with the remaining 33% of the total allotments going towards payment for consumables US$2 720 261), services (US$2 330 865), retail and distribution (US$1 199 247), pharmaceuticals and chemicals (US$7 709 204) and packaging (US$420 170).
4. Total cumulative foreign exchange auction allotments since inception of the Foreign Exchange Auction System stand at US$3 620 180 870.

RBZ Says US$3.6 Billion Allotted Since Inception Of Auction System

The Zimbabwe dollar has continued its downward spiral against the US dollar. According to the results of the official foreign currency auction conducted by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> today, 11 October 2022, the weighted average rate has fallen to US$1: ZWL$628.1975.
<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/rbz-forex-auction-zimbabwe-dollar-official-rate-as-of-04-october-2022/">Last week</a>, the foreign exchange weighted average rate was US$1: ZWL$626.1893.
In an update seen by Pindula News, the central bank reported a total of US$11,053,774.79 up from USD10,496,520.56 thatwas allotted to various sectors at this week’s RBZ foreign currency auction.
The bulk of the allotment went to raw materials followed by machinery and equipment, the same as last week.
126 bids were received on the Small to Medium Enterprises Forex Auction, with 123 accepted and 3 disqualified. The total amount allotted was USD1,347,913.87 up from USD1,158,110.96allotted last week.
On the Main Forex Auction, a total of 60 bids were received, 60 were accepted and 0 were disqualified. The total amount allotted was USDUSD9,705,860.92 up from USD9,338,409.60 allotted last week.

RBZ Forex Auction: Zimbabwe Dollar Official Rate As Of 11 October 2022

The business community last Wednesday told the Reserve Bank governor John Mangudya that they do not want the Zimbabwe dollar as it is not a sustainable currency. 
This happened at a review of the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/02/07/rbz-withdraws-us50-facility-from-the-general-public/">2022 monetary policy statement (MPS)</a> hosted by the Zimbabwe Economic Society two days after the MPS was released.
The <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/06/24/breaking-rbz-si-142-bans-use-of-all-foreign-currencies-with-effect-from-24-june-2019/">Zimbabwe dollar was reintroduced in 2019</a> after a decade of absence following its collapse in 2008 when Zimbabwe recorded record hyperinflation of 231 million per cent as per official statistics. 
Since its reintroduction, the local unit has been losing value against other currencies. The official forex rate stands at US$1:$118,87 while the parallel comparative is US$1:$240.
The exchange rate was US$1:6,36 and US$1:10 on the official and parallel markets, respectively, on June 26, 2019, the day the local currency was reintroduced. 
Even workers are rejecting the local currency citing its loss of value against other currencies. They are demanding the restoration of their 2018 salaries that were United States Dollar-denominated.
Meanwhile, authorities have indicated that they will not be redollarising again as that was not “good for the economy.”
President Emmerson Mnangagwa recently said the<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/02/13/we-cannot-grow-our-economy-on-the-basis-of-a-foreign-currency-president-mnangagwa/"> Southern African country cannot grow its economy on the basis of a foreign currency</a> which it does not have control over.
He made the remarks last week while addressing dozens of ZANU PF supporters at a rally held in Epworth to launch the party’s campaign for the March 26 by-elections.

Zimbabwe's Business Community "Rejects" The Zimbabwe Dollar

The Zimbabwe dollar marginally gained against the US dollar at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> foreign currency (forex) auction, data from the RBZ forex auction conducted on Tuesday, 23 November 2021 shows.
 This week, the weighted average was US$1: ZWL$105.6684 up from last week’s rate that stood at US$1: ZWL$105.6965.
In total, US$41.95 million was allotted this week, with the bulk of the allotment going to raw materials followed by machinery and equipment. This is down from the US$41.74  million allotted last week.
913 bids were received on the Small to Medium enterprises forex auction, with 601 accepted and 312 disqualified. The total number of bids allotted was 601.
On the main forex auction, a total of 653 bids were received, 379 were accepted and 274 were disqualified. The total number of bids allotted was 379.
Bids with overdue CDIs, outstanding Bills of Entry (BOEs), and those with sufficient FCA balances were also disqualified.

RBZ Forex Auction Results - 23 November 2021

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) says it has started to clear the backlog of foreign exchange auction allotments.
This follows revelations that often, businesses go for several weeks without receiving forex allotted to them by the central bank through the Foreign Exchange Auction System.
In a statement this Tuesday, RBZ Governor John Mangudya said clearing the backlog will help in stabilising the Zimbabwe dollar. The statement read:

CLEARANCE OF THE RING-FENCED BACKLOG OF FOREIGN EXCHANGE AUCTION ALLOTMENTS
Further to previous communication that Government would be providing funds to clear the ring-fenced backlog of foreign exchange auction allotments, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (the Bank) is pleased to advise the public that it is in the process of clearing the ring-fenced backlog after receiving the funds from Treasury.
The Bank wishes to thank Government for providing the funds to clear the backlog. This will go a long way in restoring confidence in the Foreign Exchange Auction System as well as stabilising the foreign exchange market.
The Bank continues to urge foreign auction participants and banks to observe and uphold principles of good corporate governance and self-discipline to ensure high standards of business ethics and transparency for the stability of the economy in the short to medium term.

Govt Avails Funds For RBZ Forex Auction System

<blockquote>FUNDING OF FOREIGN EXCHANGE AUCTION APPLICATIONS
The Foreign Exchange Auction System which was introduced by the Bank on 23 June 2020 has been successful in achieving price stability in the national economy.
The success has been achieved through market price discovery of the exchange rate and provision of a dependable foreign exchange market.
Since the inception of the Foreign Exchange Auction System, there has been a significant increase in both the number of bids and the value thereof from just under 100 bids valued at US$11 million at the first auction to the current levels of over 500 bids valued at around US$40 million at both the Main and SME auctions.
The top 100 beneficiaries of the Foreign Exchange Auction System over the past eight months, from 23 June 2020 to 28 February 2021, are listed hereunder for public information.
It is also important to note that the same entities have been the major beneficiaries of the interbank foreign exchange market during the same period.
One of the foreign exchange auction rules requires banks to ensure that applicants have enough local currency in their accounts to finance their bids.
However, it has come to the attention of the Bank that some banks are not paying particular attention to this requirement and have instead been extending overdraft facilities to finance their customers’ bids.
In line with the Bank’s monetary targeting framework designed to control the growth of money supply, funding of bids through overdrafts and advances is discouraged.
Where absolutely necessary, bank lending should be limited to a maximum of 50% of a bid. Under these exceptional circumstances, bidders would be required to have in their accounts a minimum balance equivalent to 50% to cover their bids.
Banks are further reminded to conduct full Know Your Customer (KYC) checks on their clients, and should not be complicit or connive in malpractices with their customers.
The Bank’s Exchange Control Division and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) are continuously monitoring users of foreign exchange in the economy in order to deal with the malpractices.
This exercise has resulted in 12 entities being banned from participating in the foreign exchange auction whilst 62 entities are under the FIU watch list.
The banned entities’ respective bankers have been warned against breach of the foreign exchange auction rules.
