The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported a decline in the overall number of road traffic accidents during the festive season compared to the previous year. However, the rise in fatal crashes has raised concerns regarding road safety.
According to statistics released by the ZRP this week, there were 2,936 road traffic accidents recorded from December 15, 2024, to January 15, 2025, down from 3,607 during the same period last year.
Despite the overall decrease in accidents, fatal incidents increased from 118 in 2023/2024 to 133 in 2024/2025.
While the number of fatalities saw a slight decrease—155 people killed compared to 162 the previous year—the number of injuries rose from 821 to 938 this season. ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:

In one of the accidents, three people were killed while ten others were injured when an Isuzu KB 250 vehicle with no passengers on board side swiped with a Toyota Probox vehicle with 13 passengers on board on 31st December 2024 at around 20 00 hours at the 136 kilometre peg along Harare -Chirundu Road.
In some of the fatal road traffic accidents recorded during the period, pedestrians were killed during the night while crossing the roads. In some instances, motorists did not stop after the accidents.
On 1st January 2025, a man (23) died on the spot after being hit by an unknown motorist who did not stop after the accident along Khami Road opposite DA Service Station, Bulawayo.
Meanwhile, another man was killed on 1st January 2025 after being hit by an unknown motorist who did not stop after the accident along Magoda Road, opposite OK Supermarket, Pamubhedha, Budiriro 5, Harare.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges motorists to exercise extreme caution and prioritize road safety, especially during the night.
Motorists should remain vigilant and attentive to pedestrians crossing the roads to prevent road traffic accidents.
Above all, in the event of a road traffic accident, drivers should stop and render first aid to the victims and promptly report the accident to the Police.

ZRP Reports Decline In Accidents But Rise In Fatal Crashes During Festive Season

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released road traffic accident statistics for the period from 15th December 2024 to 26th December 2024.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said on Friday that a total of 1,211 road traffic accidents were recorded during this period in 2024, compared to 1,454 accidents recorded in the same period in 2023.
This year, 65 fatal accidents were recorded, while 50 fatal accidents occurred in 2023. From 15th December 2024 to 26th December 2024, 77 people died in road accidents, compared to 71 fatalities during the same period in 2023.
Commissioner Nyathi also revealed that in 2024, 401 people were injured in road traffic accidents, compared to 393 injuries in the same period in 2023.
He noted that some accidents were caused by driver fatigue and negligent conduct, with most incidents involving private vehicles where either drivers or passengers perished.
The ZRP reported only one major road traffic accident involving public service vehicles, which occurred on 22nd December 2024, when three buses collided, resulting in two fatalities. Added Commissioner Nyathi:

On 22nd December 2024, 106 road traffic accidents were recorded where seven people were killed while 38 people were injured.
On 25th December 2024, 104 road traffic accidents were recorded where 13 people were killed while 16 people were injured.
On 26th December 2024, 87 road traffic accidents were recorded where 11 people were killed while 40 people were injured.
Accidents involving pedestrians trying to cross the roads have also been recorded. Drivers are urged to be observant especially when approaching built-up areas or places frequented by the public including residential areas.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that drivers should avoid speeding and overtaking in circumstances that are clearly not safe to do so.
Above all, motorists are implored not to overload vehicles when travelling on the country’s roads.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to enforce all road rules and regulations without fear or favour.
On the other hand, motorists are implored to be responsible and effectively contribute towards road safety in the country.
