The Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) has condemned cases of politically motivated violence and intimidation of voters in the Gutu West constituency allegedly by ZANU PF Forever Associates Zimbabwe (FAZ) activists.
 The Gutu West by-election will be held on 11 November 2023 bringing the National Assembly of the 10th Parliament up to its full membership of 280 seats.
Elections in the constituency could not be held on 23 August following the death of one of the nominated candidates, Christopher Mutonhori Rwodzi.
In a Press statement issued this Tuesday, 07 November, ZimRights identified one Rashiel Bere from Ward 6 as one of the perpetrators of voter intimidation. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) notes with concern the rising cases of political intimidation and violence in Ward 41, Gutu West Constituency ahead of the national assembly by-elections scheduled for the 11th of November 2023.
ZimRights community human rights monitors have documented and reported an increase in this phenomenon. The alleged perpetrators are members of the ruling party (ZANU-PF) and its affiliates.
Political Intimidation is the use of threats, coercion, or attempts to intimidate for the purpose of interfering with the right of another person to vote or to vote for the person of their choice.
ZimRights community human rights monitors in Masvingo received allegations that ZANU-PF member, Rashiel Bere from Ward 6, Mukwasi primary school, also a member of the Forever Associates Zimbabwe (FAZ) organization is moving around with ZANU-PF aspiring candidates intimidating villagers and threatening to burn their houses if they vote for the opposition party.
This worrying trend threatens to derail citizens’ participation in democratic processes, resulting in voter apathy and anarchy.
Political intimidation poses a threat to democracy, human rights, social cohesion, and progress.
Rashiel Bere who is also allegedly selling out opposition party supporters in ward 41 Gutu West to the FAZ organisation advised all women and elderly people to act illiterate and not vote in the upcoming elections but submit their names to FAZ so that FAZ votes on their behalf.
In another case reported from the Chatsworth shopping center in Gutu, a CCC member was beaten by ZANU-PF supporters after he was seen wearing a CCC T-shirt.
The victim said one of the men who assaulted him is the young brother of ZANU-PF MP Candidate John Paradza, well known as (Boss Para).
This is a sad confirmation of the findings of the ZimRights 2022 State of Peace Report, which highlights that over 50% of Zimbabweans are living in fragile peace, fearing the elections.
It is against this background that ZimRights condemns, in strongest terms, the acts of political intimidation as it is in violation of citizens’ right to form, join, and participate in the activities of a political party and to make political choices freely as protected by Section 67 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

ZimRights Concerned Over Rise In Cases Of Political Violence In Gutu West

The leader of <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Forever_Associates_Zimbabwe">Forever Associates Zimbabwe</a> (FAZ), Kudakwashe Munsaka lost three family members on Tuesday after they were struck by a bolt of lightning during a ferocious thunderstorm.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200018432/faz-leader-loses-3-family-members-in-lighting-strike">The Standard</a> on Saturday, Munsaka said his aunt and her two grandchildren were struck by lightning in Binga, Matabeleland North Province. He said:

It’s actually a tragedy that befell the people of Binga in Chabwidi village under Chief Siabuwa, particularly my family.
It was the eve of the 18th around 11 pm.
My aunt Belitha Munkuli (79) with her grandchildren; Meekness Munkuli (11) and Accept Bulemu (5) and a neighbour Rudo Muzamba were struck by lightning.
They were sleeping in a thatched hut and lightning struck and burnt the hut.
Neighbours tried to come and rescue them, but they failed as they had locked the door from inside. So this takes our death toll to four.

FAZ is a ZANU PF-affiliated group reportedly with links to the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO).
The group rose to prominence during the ZANU PF primary elections held in March 2023 and its notoriety deepened during the August Harmonised Elections when its members were allegedly involved in voter intimidation, especially in the rural areas.

FAZ Leader Loses 3 Relatives In Lightning Strike

A ZANU PF and <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Forever_Associates_Zimbabwe">Forever Associates Zimbabwe</a> (FAZ) activist Norman Mawungwa who committed suicide last week by hanging himself from a tree was buried like a “rat”, reported <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/notorious-faz-activist-buried-like-a-pauper/">The Mirror</a>.
That was in spite of Mawungwa’s last wish and plea to party members and relatives for a decent burial.
Mawungwa recorded a suicide audio in which he acknowledged to relatives and party colleagues that he did not have a funeral policy and pleaded for a decent burial.
He also specified his preferred resting place at a hill in the area but family elders including Chief Mawungwa ignored the wish and buried him at his homestead instead.
The Mirror reported that Chief Mawungwa barred mourners from singing, praying, or giving speeches at the FAZ member’s funeral.
The traditional leader also ordered that the deceased be buried with his full wardrobe including FAZ and ZANU PF regalia.
All of Mawungwa’s clothes were thrown into the grave and family members resolved not to take any souvenir from the deceased.
ZANU PF, which was expected to take over funeral costs, did not provide a beast to be slaughtered at the funeral, and as a result, mourners were served sadza with cabbages.
Despite claims by FAZ member Mugove Mubaiwa that ZANU PF donated US$1 000 towards the funeral, Mawungwa was laid to rest in a coffin priced at US$90.
A neighbouring Chief who preferred anonymity was quoted as saying:

It’s either the US$1 000 was stolen within ZANU PF ranks or people were lied to that there was a donation otherwise how does one explain such a pauper burial where mourners could not even get a decent meal?
</blockquote>
The MP for the area, Pupurai Togarepi, whom Mawungwa worked for during the August 2023 election campaigns, and the reason he made so many enemies, did not turn up or deliver an official condolence message.
There was no ZANU PF official at the funeral of the man who is accused of killing and brutalising perceived opposition supporters for the sake of the party.
Mawungwa’s body was not allowed in the homestead after being removed from the tree where he hung, as per local customs.
The body was dumped and spent day and night in a field covered with tree branches and only collected in the morning and taken straight to the grave for burial.
Women at the funeral reportedly refused to give undertakers their MaZambia (wrapping cloths), to be used to lower the coffin into the grave.
As a result, undertakers had to drop the coffin 1.8 metres down and it hit the bottom of the grave with a thud.
The undertakers hastily covered the grave with sand and mourners left immediately afterwards.
Chief Mawungwa explained why the mourners refused to have their wrapping cloths used to lower the deceased’s casket into the grave. He said:

We will not allow any of our clothes to be used on this man’s coffin. His evil spirits will follow us.
Neither will any relative take any souvenir of his. He had demons and they will stick with you.
You know how he died. His spirit is not clean. There will be no singing, speechifying or praying. We just bury him, eat food prepared for us and leave.
</blockquote>
A war veteran and close confidante of Mawungwa identified as Mudukuti was not happy because ordinary people celebrated Mawungwa’s death. He said:

Why do you hate him so much? What did he do to you? I saw people at Mawungwa Business Centre in great joy after the death of Mawungwa.
</blockquote>
A local teacher reportedly tortured by Mawungwa in 2008 who declined to be named said:
<blockquote>
I came all the way from Mpandawana just to see for myself that this evil man was gone.
God exists, the man has been buried like a rat. They buried him like they were burying a rat.
</blockquote>
In the audio that he recorded shortly before taking his own life, and addressed to his son, Mawungwa said his political past was tormenting him. He said: “Mwanangu ndashungurudzwa nezvematongerwe enyika, dei ndakaziva haitungamiri.”

"Notorious" ZANU PF And FAZ Activist Buried Like A Pauper

An alleged ZANU PF thug who recently took his own life left an audio message in which he said he regretted the corrupt and violent life he led in Gutu South constituency.
According to a report by <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/zanu-pf-suicide-victim-deeply-regrets-faz-links/">The Mirror</a>, the ZANU PF activist, Norman Mawungwa, from Chief Mawungwa committed suicide on Sunday night.
He blamed his clan (Mawungwa chieftainship) and family members for pushing him into committing suicide.
Mawungwa accused them of tormenting him over his alleged violence and corruption.
In audio in possession of The Mirror which he left behind for his son Joe, Mawungwa said that ZANU PF MP for Gutu South <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Pupurai_Togarepi">Pupurai Togarepi</a> and a war veteran he identified as Mudukuti were his intimate political friends and are aware of the reasons for his death.
Mawungwa is reported to have been probably the most notorious political thug in Gutu South.
He appealed to the family and ZANU PF to assist him with a decent burial as he did not have a funeral policy.
The late political activist regretted his involvement in politics and said had he known, he would never have participated in such things.
In his last words, Mawungwa repeatedly said “Had I known I wouldn’t do such” as he expressed regret about being associated with <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Forever_Associates_Zimbabwe">Forever Zimbabwe Associates</a> (FAZ), a shadowy ZANU PF affiliate with alleged links with the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO).
He said some people could think that he committed suicide because of the land he illegally sold, saying that was not the case.
Mawungwa said the clan, his family and in particular his brothers were not ready to forgive him for his involvement with FAZ. He said in the audio:

Joe mwanangu, ndini baba vako. Ndafunga kuzorora mwanangu musure mekushungurudzwa. Ndashungurudzwa zvikuru. Handina Kuziva, dei waro ndakaziva. Dei waro haitungamiri. Chikonzero vanhu vemhuri, vandishungurudza zvikuru nenyaya dzematongerwo enyika. (Joe my son, it’s your father. I have decided to rest after being tormented. I have been tormented a lot. I didn’t realize it will come to this. Had I known I would never have been involved. Family members and the whole clan are against my involvement in ZANU PF politics).

He alleged that his clan was handsomely paid by CCC to torment him adding that Togarepi, Mudukuti, and one Mbizvo were aware of that.
Togarepi reportedly cut off his phone when The Mirror contacted him for a comment.
Mawungwa was found hanging in a cattle pen at his uncle’s house by a girl going to school on Monday morning. He had spent the previous day at the funeral of an aunt.

ZANU PF Activist Who Committed Suicide "Deeply" Regretted FAZ Links

ZANU PF-affiliated group <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Forever_Associates_Zimbabwe">Forever Associate Zimbabwe</a> (FAZ) Trust has been accused of engaging in politically-motivated violence and the intimidation of opposition supporters by human rights watchdog Heal Zimbabwe Trust (HZT).
HZT says FAZ, war veterans, village heads, chiefs and ZANU PF officials are responsible for violence and intimidation ahead of the 23 August 2023 general elections.
FAZ, which is reportedly backed by the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO), handled ZANU PF primary elections early this year.
In its Election Watch report for June, HZT said FAZ agents even forced an opposition candidate in Gutu West to withdraw from the race at gunpoint. <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/faz-fingered-in-election-related-violence-as-rights-watchdog-confirms-40-cases/">Part of the report reads</a>:
<blockquote>
Heal Zimbabwe has recorded at least 40 cases of intimidation, threats and coercion in the past week alone across the country.
Opposition CCC supporters have been at the receiving end of these threats and intimidation while ZANU PF structures, shadowy FAZ, traditional leaders and war veterans have been identified as the biggest perpetrators.
Shadowy organisation, FAZ, an affiliate of the ruling party has been at the center of controversy, conflict and human rights since the last months of 2022.
FAZ has, however, caught the eye of the storm in recent months. In the past week, FAZ has allegedly been the major perpetrator of intimidation, violence and coercion across the country.
In Gutu West Ward 7, FAZ officials allegedly held a CCC councillor candidate at gunpoint and made him withdraw his candidature under duress.
The candidate has since sought a reversal of the withdrawal.

FAZ originated in 2010 at <a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/Solusi_University" title="Solusi University">Solusi University</a>, by a group of <a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/Seventh_Day_Adventist_Church" title="Seventh Day Adventist Church">Seventh Day Adventist Church</a> students and faculty who came together to access business and empowerment opportunities then being offered under Government’s <a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/Indigenisation_and_Economic_Empowerment_in_Zimbabwe" title="Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment in Zimbabwe">Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Programme</a>.
They registered as a Trust, with the support of the then Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs. Their aspirations were, however, frustrated and ultimately thwarted under the <a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/Government_of_National_Unity" title="Government of National Unity">Government of National Unity.</a>

Heal Zimbabwe Trust Accuses FAZ Of Voter Intimidation

A manual for <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Forever_Associates_Zimbabwe">Forever Associates Zimbabwe</a> (FAZ) reveals how the ZANU PF-affiliated organisation creeps into communities to campaign for the re-election of ZANU PF candidates in this year’s harmonised elections.
The document, titled Scope of Campaign Activities, details what should be done to ensure President Emmerson Mnangagwa and ZANU PF’s victory. <a href="https://thenewshawks.com/exclusive-shadowy-groups-campaign-methods-exposed/">The manual says</a>:
<blockquote>
The mainstay of this campaign is door-to-door intimate voter contact. This allows the volunteer to move from house to house and workplace to workplace, talking to individual voters one at a time.
This, in turn, enables the volunteer to know the problems voters face, gauge their level of support for the party and candidate, and tailor messages and campaign activities to address their concerns.
These visits must not be once-off but must become regular to help the party to dominate and saturate the environment while denying the same to opponents.
Once the party has access to the voters’ roll, preferably broken down to constituencies and even to polling stations, volunteers must keep in touch with registered voters through texting and phoning.
This must be done almost intrusively, as a way of maintaining intimacy. Volunteers should be in the habit of checking on the health and well-being of voters as a way of showing the party’s and candidate’s concerns.
This can also be used for reminding voters of important election-related events and issues, while also keeping them up to date on key developments.
Volunteers must be available to furnish voters with the party’s and candidate’s campaign literature in their homes and workspaces. This will be done door-to-door or at community gatherings.
Literature will also be distributed at markets, bus termini or shops, thus helping to expand the campaign to voters outside the volunteer’s immediate area of responsibility.
Volunteers will administer voter education to contacts and assist those who are undocumented or aliens to acquire national registration documents and to register to vote.
These interventions, which are already taking place in all constituencies nationwide, should result in a significant surge in registered voters who attribute that achievement to President ED (Mnangagwa) and ZANU PF.
Volunteers must maintain contact with people they would have assisted to register to vote or to acquire national documents so that they are not won over to the opposition’s poisonous narratives.
Volunteers will initiate programmes where contacts are invited to enlist their friends into networks of voters such as WhatsApp groups, teas, social clubs and interest groups, where contacts are encouraged to spread the campaign message to their friends and bring these into the fold. This will enable the campaign to grow in a snowball effect.
Volunteers, either individually or by coming together as a team, will engage, befriend and maintain contact with these community leaders, influencers and opinion leaders as a way of authoritatively gaining, through them, the support of their followers for the party and candidate.
Volunteers will participate in sporting, religious, political and cultural events within the Constituency and use the opportunity to learn about the community and influence individuals to support the party and candidate.
They will also do the same with small but highly publicised practical social interventions, such as helping the sick, attending funerals and mitigating property losses due to fire or weather damage.
FAZ volunteers are required to intrusively access party cell registers, from party cell chairmen, and check and verify their accuracy and integrity.
To this end, FAZ then discretely conducts a head count of cell members, checking if they are registered to vote.
If any party members or holders of positions of leadership are found not to have national documents or registered to vote, FAZ, therefore, will handhold and assist all those to rectify the discrepancy under supervision.
FAZ has inbuilt structures and skills to engage in dedicated media activity, content generation, Web activity and cyber warfare focused on the party’s and candidate’s campaign.
Constituency teams may request coverage for their activities whenever necessary.
Four times monthly, on Sundays, the constituency team is required to come together and host public events at Growth Points and other population centres in the constituencies, during which people are entertained with music and movies. 
These shows are then interrupted at intervals to address these audiences, imparting the party’s campaign message.
FAZ volunteers, either individually or in groups, must never engage in political violence, except in self-defence for purposes of extricating themselves from an attack if one is foisted upon them.
They, accordingly, must not offer themselves to be used as such or to accept instructions from any authority to engage in violence for whatever reason.
It is not in FAZ, the party’s or the president’s pedigree, plan, interest or desire to use violence as a campaign tool.
Any FAZ member who engages in acts of politically motivated violence, other than for purposes of self-defence under strictly exceptional circumstances, will be automatically expelled and deregistered from the Trust.

Forever Associates Zimbabwe's Campaign Methods Revealed

Harare East legislator, <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Tendai_Biti">Tendai Biti</a> (CCC), has warned that the activities of ZANU PF-affiliated group Forever Associates Zimbabwe (FAZ) were a recipe for military coups.
Biti alleged that FAZ was tampering with the country’s election process and conducting activities that should only be done by the <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Electoral_Commission">Zimbabwe Electoral Commission</a> (ZEC) saying that could lead to a military coup.
Biti, who is also CCC co-vice president, made the remarks in the National Assembly on Wednesday.
Since the commencement of the voters’ roll inspection exercise by ZEC last week, CCC has claimed that FAZ agents have inundated inspection centres.
Biti demanded that Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Oppah_Muchinguri">Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri</a> explain what FAZ was doing at polling stations. <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/biti-says-hiring-of-spooky-faz-agents-into-poll-process-is-recipe-for-coup/">ZimLive</a> quoted Biti as saying:

In terms of Chapter 11 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, our Constitution recognises our security forces and security agents, which consist of military, police, prisons and correctional service, and intelligence.
We respect these institutions and we are proud of these institutions who by virtue of Section 208, are bound to respect this parliament as an elected civilian authority.
During this current ongoing voters’ roll inspection exercise, we are seeing at polling stations, a creature and individuals coming from a creature called FAZ. They are virtually in every polling station.
We read that they purport to come from the intelligent service but we know the intelligence service and our intelligent authority.
What is this creature called FAZ and why is it interfering with our elections?
Madam Speaker, if we create parallel structures, it will lead to disaster and military coups.
May the Minister of Defence come and explain what FAZ is doing in our polling stations when in terms of the law only ZEC officials, political parties and candidates are allowed to be in the polling stations.

However, on Wednesday ZEC vice chairperson Rodney Kiwa denied that the electoral management body was deliberately trying to disenfranchise ZANU PF opponents.
He described as “mischievous and preposterous” claims that “some members of a particular political party are targeted for exclusion”.
