Police have said claims that they are seeking to interview President Dambudzo Mnangagwa are false.
This comes after a purported press statement alleged that the Police were seeking to interview Mnangagwa for attempted murder.
In a statement released on Friday, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they are not conducting any investigations concerning the President.
He said the fake press statement was photoshopped, edited, and endorsed with fake details.
Asst Comm Nyathi added that Police have launched investigations into the matter and those responsible for the fake statement in the name of ZRP will be arrested. He said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police dismisses a fake and false purported press statement issued by a criminal alleging that the Police seeks to interview His Excellency, The President of The Republic of Zimbabwe, Head of State and Government and Commander in Chief of The Zimbabwe Defence Forces, Cde, Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.
The fake statement is dated 14th September 2023.
The Police dismisses this fake or false statement with the contempt it deserves.
For the record, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is not conducting any investigations concerning His Excellency, President Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.
The law will take its course on criminal elements and political activists who want to malign the office of His Excellency, Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
Inquiries have revealed that the fake press statement was photoshopped, edited and endorsed with fake details.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is now conducting investigations with a view of arresting this criminal syndicate which issued the false and fake press statement in the name of the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

The fake statement, which has been circulating on social media platforms said:

We are seeking to interview one Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa with connection to the attempted murder of Retired General Chiwenga. It is alleged that sometime in 2018, 85-year-old Mnangagwa connived with Mary Mubaiwa, the then General Chiwenga’s wife, to poison her husband with an unknown substance.
We are offering US$1 000 to anyone with information of Mnangagwa’s whereabouts.

Police Refute Claims That President Mnangagwa Is Being Investigated

The opposition CCC said that voters have ignored fliers littering streets in Harare on Wednesday morning allegedly distributed by Forever Associate Zimbabwe (FAZ), a ZANU PF-linked shadowy group.
The fliers targetting opposition voters, urged the urban electorate to stay at home and not vote, saying CCC candidate Nelson Chamisa had pulled out of the presidential race citing alleged rigging,
In a tweet, CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said Zimbabweans have ignored the fliers and gone out in huge numbers to cast their votes. She said:

MANY CITIZENS have reached out to say they’re not going to be distracted by the fake FAZ fliers. They’re already on their way to vote. They know what they want. They want their voices heard constitutionally on the ballot. Everything points to a massive turnout today. Go &amp; vote!

Meanwhile, voters at some polling stations in Harare’s high-density suburbs which are perceived opposition strongholds, waited for more than 10 hours at polling stations without being able to vote.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) failed to deliver ballot papers on time, saying delays in the opening of voting were caused by delays in the printing of the ballot papers arising from numerous Court challenges.
Surprisingly, voters in ZANU PF strongholds which are more than 300 kilometers away from Harare where the ballots were printed voted without any hassles.

CCC Commends Voters For Ignoring "Fake FAZ Fliers"

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has distanced itself from a post circulating on social media platforms on the number of registered voters.
The post claims that more than 70% of registered voters for the 23 August 2023 general elections are in rural areas.
The post, which features a ZEC logo, claims that the figure was based on data from the commission’s website.
According to the post, 3 801 967 people are registered in rural areas while only 1 976 381 people are in urban areas.
In a statement posted on Twitter, ZEC urged members of the public to disregard the post, saying it did not originate from the electoral management body. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200013625/zec-disowns-fake-post-on-voter-statistics">It said</a>:

This post did not emanate from the ZEC office and the commission distances itself from such.
Members of the public are discouraged from abusing the ZEC logo for personal gain.
We urge the public to be wary of such posts and to only rely on information from the ZEC website or from our official social media platforms.

We urge all eligible voters to register to vote and participate in the elections.

Critics have expressed doubt over the credibility of the upcoming elections as ZEC has hitherto failed to avail the voters’ roll to candidates for scrutiny.

ZEC Disowns Social Media Post On Voter Statistics

The Airforce of Zimbabwe (AFZ) on Friday, 03 February, dismissed as false an advert circulating on social media claiming there will be a massive recruitment exercise by the AFZ in April and May.
In a statement, AFZ Public Relations Officer, Wing Commander Donovan Muroyiwa, said the advert did not originate from the organisation. Read the full statement below:

The advert falsely states various trades and provincial centres where aspiring candidates should report on some given dates. The AFZ would want to categorically put it clear that the information is false and was never originated from the organisation.
Furthermore, the AFZ does not convey official messages through social media and undesignated platforms. Any advert on AFZ recruitment will be disseminated and broadcast through mainstream media such as newspapers, radio and television.
The public is, therefore advised to disregard information that is published, disseminated and propagated through unofficial social media sites or immediately verify the authenticity of such information from the AFZ Public Relations Department or Recruitment Office.

FAKE News Attributed To Pindula News: How To Tell It's Not A Pindula Article

The Ministry of Health and Childcare (MoHCC) has warned members of the public about a fake Nurse Aid Intake advert circulating on social media.
The fake advert, purportedly issued by MoHCC, sets 28 October 2022 as the registration deadline and invites applications to register on mobile phone number 0779091530.
The Ministry of Health has distanced itself from the advert, saying it is the work of fraudsters who are trying to fleece unsuspecting people of their money. It said:

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has urged members of the public to disregard videos and messages circulating on social media in which some people claim to have received the yet-to-be-issued gold coins.
In a statement, the RBZ said the videos and messages are fake news as the gold coins will become available on 25 July 2022. Reads the statement:

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Nick Managwana has dismissed reports that passports are ready for collection as claimed on social media are is fake.

Fakes News Alert: Some WhatsApp Stories Claiming To Be From Pindula, Are Not.

The High Court of Zimbabwe on Friday granted ZWL$1 000.00 bail to Lovemore Zvokusekwa, a 36-year-old Chitungwiza resident who was arrested on April 18 for spreading fake news.
This was revealed by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) through a post on Twitter. The post read:
<blockquote>BREAKING: High Court grants bail to Lovemore Zvokusekwa to the tune of 1000 RTGs. Lovemore was arrested on allegations of peddling falsehoods. He is accused of sharing a message that ‘Lockdown’ that was ending on 19 April would be extended……</blockquote>
Zvokusekwa allegedly published a false Press statement purporting to have been issued and signed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa titled, “Extension of lockdown period by 13 days only”.
He initially appeared before Harare magistrate Judith Taruvinga on April 20 and remanded in custody to May 13 with instructions to apply for bail at the High Court.
Zvokusekwa was charged with publishing or communicating false statements prejudicial to the State.
Propagating fake news on social media and mainstream media about the novel coronavirus has been categorised as a Level 14 offence.
A level 14 offence is the highest offence in the country and it attracts a 20-year jail term.

Fake Lockdown Extension Document 'Author' Granted ZWL$1 000 Bail

A Chitungwiza man who was arrested for spreading fake news on Monday appeared before a Harare magistrate and remanded in custody to May 13 with instructions to apply for bail at the High Court.
Lovemore Zvokusekwa (36) of House Number 7094 Unit J, Chitungwiza, who is employed by High Range Resources (Pvt) Ltd, appeared before magistrate Judith Taruvinga charged with publishing or communicating false statements prejudicial to the State.
Zvokusekwa allegedly published a false Press statement purporting to have been issued and signed by the President, about two weeks ago.
The document, which claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had extended the initial 21-day lockdown period, was titled, “Extension of lockdown period by 13 days only”.
Speaking at his Precabe Farm in Sherwood, Kwekwe, last week after returning from a tour of Mkoba and Senga suburbs in Gweru, President Mnangagwa said that he had not authored the document. He said:
<blockquote>I have never made such a statement and that social media statement is absolute nonsense. We now have a law which punishes those who produce fake news and I have ordered an investigation into those behind the fake statement and if found, we want that person to be an example by getting up to 20 years in prison. It’s bad to peddle falsehoods, especially about a President.</blockquote>

Man Appears In Court Over Fake Lockdown Extension Document

The country’s roads administrator has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the government has hiked vehicle license fees, The Chronicle reports.
ZINARA issued a notice that reads:
<blockquote>Zinara is a statutory body that falls under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development. Therefore, any review of vehicle license tariffs is done by the parent ministry and is gazetted.</blockquote>
ZINARA further urged the public not to panic due to social media fake news.

Exiled former cabinet minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jonathan_Moyo" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Jonathan Moyo</a> has reiterated his allegations that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s daughter, Farai, was given US$250 000 by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe</a> unprocedurally.
Moyo responded to a tweet by the RBZ which was a rebuttal of his earlier claim that Mnangagwa had been given thousands of dollars in hard currency without an invoice. He said
<blockquote>FAKE DENIAL. It’s known that Shavano and Mawire directed communications to deny, deny and deny some more. Mawire even sought to have staff involved in the Farai Mnangagwa transaction detained, but was stopped by security’s Muradzikwa who warned the detention would confirm the deal!</blockquote>
The RBZ has dismissed Moyo’s accusations as “fake news” on microblogging site Twitter. An RBZ statement read:

Parirenyatwa Hospital Dismisses Laboratory Technician Training Advert As Fake

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Energy_Regulatory_Authority" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority </a>(ZERA) has dismissed reports that it has set a new fuel price effective on 14 October 2019.
In a statement on its social media accounts, ZERA categorically rejected the reports and refuted them as a hoax. The statement reads:

Reports Of Stranded Police Officers In Victoria Falls Are Fake News: Government

The government has dismissed claims may by a human rights NGO that 17 people were killed by security forces during the January protests.
The government says that instead, one police officer was killed while 78 were injured. Writing on Twitter, the Ministry of Information said:
<blockquote>In the violent disturbances of the 14-16 January 2019, there was a concerted attack against police officers resulting in one deceased officer &amp; 78 injured across the country as follow: Harare 56, Bulawayo 16, Manicaland 03, Mashonaland East 03.
The violent gangs did commit a lot of atrocities against fellow citizens. They robbed them, assaulted them, stripped female police officers naked as well as burn crime dockets in police stations amongst a raft of other crimes.</blockquote>
However, the MDC Alliance has rejected those claims as ‘fake news’. MDC president Nelson Chamisa’s spokesperson Nkululeko Sibanda said:

Social messaging app WhatsApp has said it is limiting the number of times a user can forward a message to five in an attempt to fight fake news and the spread of rumours.
The change was announced on Monday during an event in Jakarta, two months before Indonesia, where WhatsApp is used extensively, holds its general elections. The announcement was made by WhatsApp vice president for policy and communications Victoria Grand. Grand said:

</blockquote>
Previously, a WhatsApp user could forward a message to 20 individuals or groups.

The Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has dismissed as fake news, an advert doing the rounds on social media calling for an intake of nurses. The hospital advised that the next intake will likely be in November and will be advertised in national newspapers. In a statement on Twitter, the hospital said,

We Are Not Recruiting Nurses: Parirenyatwa Hospital  Warns

Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries founding leader Walter Magaya met ICT Minister Supa Mandiwanzira and launched a mobile application called Lets Chat. He said that the application can be used to pay for electricity and can carry out as many as 20 video conference calls.
He said that there is a notification tab which can be used to curb fake news. Said Magaya:
<blockquote>Of course it’s difficult to curb fake news, but on our Lets Chat we have a space called notification. Notification is a tab which is our tab as the host of Lets Chat. For example there is fake news circulating maybe saying that Magaya is dead. On our notification you can post the real news. For example speaking out of record let us look at WhatsApp, if fake news is circulating the owners of WhatsApp we don’t know them, they cannot clarify whatever news is circulating. But us as Lets Chat we can actually send a disclaimer and say “what is circulating has not been produced by us, people are just speaking, the truth is like this and this and this”. And I think someone will believe a tab like that which you cannot reply to which is only telling the truth.</blockquote>
The mobile application was launched at PHD’s Crossover Night and has over 120 000 downloads so far.

Magaya Launches Mobile App "Lets Chat" To Curb Fake News

Thomas Mapfumo has responded to social media reports that he is coming to perform in December. Mukanya says that the video that is circulating was for a show in the United Kingdom.
In a statement Mapfumo said:
<blockquote>Chimurenga Music Company wishes to dismiss messages and a video circulating on social media purporting that Thomas Mapfumo will be performing in Harare in December as fake news. For the record there is no such show planned, the video circulating was recorded last month when Mukanya was travelling to UK for a show. The posters are not only fictitious but misleading to millions of our fans in Zimbabwe longing for Mukanya’s Bira in Zimbabwe. If Mukanya has a show it will be communicated through official channels.

MDC-T Vice President Nelson Chamisa has dismissed as fake news, an article that is circulating on some websites that MDC-T President Morgan Tsvangirai has died in South Africa. Pindula reached out to Chamisa, after getting numerous enquiries on whether it was true that Tsvangirai had actually died. The article is believed to have originated in the <a href="http://houstonchronicle-tv.com/breaking-news-zims-opposition-leader-morgan-richard-tsvangirai-dies/">Houston Chronicle</a>. Part of the article reads:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe’s main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai died today following his critical condition in the South African hospital, a senior party official told local media today.
According to the local media, Tsvangirai had gone to South Africa for a routine medical check-ups, but he developed low blood pressure during the medication and subsequently passed away at around 6:00 am Zimbabwean time today.
“Sadly I can confirm our leader is gone, his legacy still lives with us,” a senior official from Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) told the local media, speaking on condition of anonymity.

In statement, Director of army public relations lieutenant colonel Alphios Makotore dismissed a message circulating on social media that the Zimbabwe National Army is recruiting.
Said Makotore:
<blockquote>These false notifications, which are currently in circulation on WhatsApp, are to the effect that there will be a recruitment exercise by the ZNA throughout the country’s provinces during the months of May and June 2017. The false notifications are directing all prospective applicants to report to the nearest military institutions in Midlands, Manicaland, Masvingo, Matabeleland South and Matabeleland North provinces. The army wishes to categorically make it clear that there is no such recruitment taking place. The criminal elements masquerading as recruitment agents are not representing the ZNA or any of its members in any way. . . these notices are fake and false hence they must be dismissed with the contempt they deserve. ZNA . . . does not recruit through agents and social media. The origins of these fake messages are being investigated and the criminal elements, once apprehended, will be prosecuted.</blockquote>
