Two prison inmates who were serving three-year sentences for unlawful entry reportedly escaped from Gokwe Prison, taking advantage of lax security, on Saturday evening.
The escapees then robbed a shop owner at Gwehava business centre, a few kilometres from Gokwe town.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200009058/2-gokwe-prisoners-escape-rob-shop-owner">NewsDay</a> reported sources saying that one of the escapees was re-arrested, while his accomplice, Decent Sibanda of Kana Mission, is still at large.
Sibanda, whose prison number is 357/21, began his three-year sentence on 1 June 2021.
He was expected to complete his sentence on 31 May 2023.
The escapees were reportedly at a prison farm near Gwehava business centre where they were looking after the prison cattle and maize.
After escaping from lawful custody, they robbed a nearby shop of some grocery goods and other valuables.

The number of people who have escaped from quarantine centres has risen to 187 after 4 more people recently skipped from two different centres.
The COVID-19 status and identities of the latest escapees have not been disclosed.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the development, saying to date, only 28 people have been arrested for escaping from quarantine. Said Nyathi:
<blockquote>One person escaped from NSSA Hotel, Beitbridge while three others from Murewa Training Centre quarantine centres. The cumulative number of escapees is now 187 while those arrested remain at 28.</blockquote>
Nyathi revealed that more than 78 000 people have been arrested for violating COVID-19 regulations to date across the country.
He urged members of the public to be wary of the increasing number of COVID-19 infections and to abide by COVID-19 regulations.
Following the escapes, police have said they put tight security at the isolation centres and on the boundary of the main quarantine centre.
They are being assisted by the Zimbabwe National Army, the Support Unit and the Duty Uniform Branch (DUB).
