Manchester United has sacked manager Erik ten Hag (54) following a poor start to the 2024/25 season.
Ten Hag’s final match was a 2-1 defeat to West Ham, leaving the club in 14th place in the Premier League with only three wins from nine matches.
United is also struggling in the Europa League, sitting 21st out of 36 teams, having drawn all three of their opening fixtures.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined as Ten Hag’s assistant last summer, has been appointed as the interim manager while a permanent head coach is sought.
The decision to dismiss Ten Hag was described as difficult but unanimous, and he was informed by the club’s board on Monday morning.
United had triggered a one-year extension in Ten Hag’s contract after winning the FA Cup in May, but he has been dismissed just over three months later due to the club’s second-worst start to a Premier League campaign.
United is now seeking its sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
Ten Hag took over in summer 2022, leading the club to third place in his first season and winning the 2023 Carabao Cup.
His second season began poorly, with United finishing bottom of their Champions League group in the autumn but they picked up a trophy, beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Manchester City secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester United in the Manchester derby. The Premier League match took place at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring for City with a penalty in the first half, which was awarded after a VAR check. Haaland then added a second goal after the break and assisted Phil Foden for the third goal.
The win moves City level on points with second-placed Arsenal and two points behind Tottenham.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s poor performance leaves them in eighth place, eight points off the top four. The Red Devils will look to bounce back in their upcoming matches against Newcastle United in the EFL Cup and Fulham in the league.
Manchester City, on the other hand, have won three consecutive games and will face Bournemouth in their next Premier League match. This victory marks City’s seventh win at Old Trafford under manager Pep Guardiola and the first time they have won there by a margin of three or more goals under the Spanish gaffer.
Manchester United’s defeat against City is their third time losing by three or more goals in a Premier League home game against them.

Manchester City Defeat Manchester United In The Manchester Derby

Former United captain Gary Neville has said Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract at Manchester United should be terminated by the club.
He made the remarks after Ronaldo told TalkTV that he does not respect United manager Erik ten Hag and claimed he is being forced out of Old Trafford.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner who has been a peripheral figure on the field for United since Ten Hag took charge as a manager in May also criticised the club’s owners, the Glazer family, claiming they “don’t care” about the sporting success of the club.
Speaking to Sky Sports Neville said Manchester United have to terminate the former Real Madrid striker’s contract. He said:

I agree with some of the things Cristiano has said, and many Man Utd fans will agree with many things Cristiano has said. But the reality is if you’re an employee within a business and say those things your employment has to terminate and Man Utd have to do that in the next few days.

A statement from United, released on Monday, said the club would “consider its response after the full facts have been established”.
However, a banner of Ronaldo has already been removed from the facade of Old Trafford.
Ronaldo has just over six months left on his contract after rejoining United from Juventus in August 2021.
The Portuguese won three Premier League titles and the Champions League during his first stint at Old Trafford.
His homecoming has turned sour.
United failed to qualify for the Champions League after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season, despite Ronaldo’s 24 goals in all competitions.
The 37-year-old is due to appear in his fifth World Cup in Qatar.
