Germany and Kenya have reached an agreement to enable 250,000 semi-skilled and skilled Kenyans to work in Europe’s biggest economy. As part of the deal, Germany will ease some of its immigration laws. 
Semi-skilled people include buss drivers, while skilled people include teachers, nurses, and doctors. 
The deal was signed in Berlin by Kenya’s President William Ruto and Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz this month. It is aimed at addressing a shortage of skilled labour in Germany and a shortage of jobs in Kenya.
Here are some of the things agreed in the deal:
<ul>
<li>Kenyans will get long-term visas to study or get vocational training in Germany. Some bus drivers, for example are now receiving training in Germany </li>
<li>Some specific professions will also get relaxed migration requirements. For example, IT specialists from Kenya will be allowed to enter and work in Germany, even if they do not have formal qualifications.</li>
<li>On the expiry of the long-stay visa, Kenyans may receive a temporary residence permit for study purposes in Germany for up to two years</li>
<li>The temporary residence permit may be extended if the purpose of residence has not yet been achieved but is achievable within a “reasonable” period</li>
<li>Kenyans in Germany illegally will have to return to Kenya and efforts made to reduce illegal immigration</li>
</ul>
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) supports the deal saying it will increase access to decent foreign jobs for Kenyan workers in Germany. 
Said ILO in a statement before the signing: 
<blockquote>
“This agreement is designed to address the labour market needs of both countries, providing a structured framework for the migration of skilled workers. It includes mechanisms to protect the rights and welfare of Kenyan migrant workers in Germany, ensuring safe, orderly, and productive migration.”
</blockquote>
Kenya’s unemployment rate is about 10%, with the majority of the unemployed being the youth.
There have been some criticism in Kenya that the deal would result in brain drain. At a joint press conference in Berlin, Ruto said about the concerns:

“I want to assure you that we have skills, we have developed a huge human capital. As you may be aware, Kenya is a young country.
We have a huge young population that cannot only satisfy our industrialisation agenda in Kenya but also here in Germany. In fact, it will provide an avenue for us to tap the skills here,”

Germany To Ease Migration Laws For 250,000 Kenyans, In Labour Deal

A local human resources consulting firm, <a href="http://www.ipcconsultants.com/">Industrial Psychology Consultants</a>, set out to find the trends around USD salaries in Zimbabwe.
According to an article by the company’s founder Memory Nguwi, IPC surveyed HR professionals in 60 companies in July. The key finding according to Nguwi is that the majority of the companies, by far, are paying a certain percentage of the salary in US dollars. 
Nguwi says that based on previous surveys they have done, paying salaries (or a portion of salaries) in USD is on the increase.
We summarise here some of the findings shared by Nguwi:
<ul>
<li>There is no question that some organisations started paying their employees’ salaries denominated in US dollars some time ago. This is mostly a reaction to the rate of inflation and the recent falling value of the Zimbabwe dollar.</li>
<li>NGO, mining, transport and logistics sectors pay salaries largely in US dollars.</li>
<li>A large percentage of top management is paid largely in US dollars.</li>
<li>Many organisations are receiving US dollars local sales enabling them to pay staff in US dollars.</li>
<li>When companies start paying in USD, less people leave the company for greener pastures.</li>
<li>Employees of companies that are not paying any USD are facing challenges paying rentals and school fees, which are mostly in US dollars.</li>
<li>Employers with some US dollar revenue continue to raise the share of salaries paid in US dollars to protect employees from the rising cost of living and the depreciation of the Zimbabwe dollar.</li>
<li>Firms that rely heavily on exports pay their employees in US dollars.</li>
<li>Without USD revenue, its difficult to sustain USD salaries and therefore companies are encouraged to rather peg salaries in US dollars but pay using the local currency at the prevailing rate.</li>

More than 170 000 new jobs have been created in various sectors of the economy since 2017, data from the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) shows.
Over 7 000 jobs have been created in the first four months of this year, while 57 265 were created in 2018, 46 208 in 2019 and 40 000 in 2020.
The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) describes an employee as anyone who works for a public or private employer for more than 30 hours per week.
Responding to questions from The Sunday Mail, NSSA deputy director (marketing and communication), Tendai Mutseyekwa, said the agriculture sector accounted for the bulk of the new jobs at 28 997 since 2017, while 27 546 new jobs were created in the manufacturing sector.
Mutseyekwa said over the same period, the mining sector took up 12 777 new employees, while the commercial and transport sectors accounted for 53 984 and 5 792 new workers, respectively.
The public administration and health sectors took up 19 684 new employees, while 5 787 people were employed in the education and professional sports sectors.
The post and telecommunications sector had 1 547 new workers while the civil engineering, construction and motor vehicle repair sectors took up 13 309 new employees. Said Mutseyekwa:
<blockquote>A cumulative total of 172 068 new employments have been registered from the year 2017 to date.
While the commercial sector accounts for 31 per cent of the new jobs, farming alone comes second with 17 per cent, indicating the role of agriculture in the economy.
The commercial sector constitutes many small sub-players, making agriculture the highest contributor to the new job creation over the period.</blockquote>

More Than 170k New Jobs Created Since 2017

The government has reportedly recruited over 1,300 teachers this term in a bid to improve the teacher-student ratios in schools.
The Sunday Mail Reports:
<blockquote>“The latest second round of recruitment is part of an exercise to add 3 000 teachers to the education sector, where the teacher to student ratio is estimated to be at an average of 1:120. 
Government unlocked recruitment of teaching staff last year after a 2014 freeze that was meant to rationalise the civil service and cut its wage bill”</blockquote>
According to the same publication, teacher-student ratio had reached 1:165 in some instances, a very unhealthy ratio according to expects.

1,300+ Teachers Recruited This Term

<blockquote>I have to dispell a myth first. The myth is that it’s easy to make money online. It is not. However, it is in many ways easier to do than doing it offline. <h3>1. eCommerce – Sell something physical</h3>
If you already have experience selling things then you can use the internet to sell more of that thing. This could really be anything from arts and craft pieces to selling a service that you provide physically like mowing loans and installing satellite dishes. The whole point with the internet is that it allows you to do 2 things that are otherwise difficult to do without it:

<li>Allows you to reach many more people across a larger area that you could reach with a physical shop. You could even reach customers in a different country</li>
<li>Allows you to get paid over the internet for your product and you can send it to your customer. You could get paid via PayPal, and in particular smaller countries like Zimbabwe, there are payment processors like Paynow in Zimbabwe or even EcoCash.</li>

<h3>2. Create content and put adverts against the content.</h3>
If you like writing about a certain subject you could do this to create an opportunity to earn online.
You don’t have to find these adverts yourself, there are ad networks that will put ads against the content. This is admittedly the slowest way to earn money using content because adverts only start paying well (enough to sustain you the creator to do it full time) after you start getting a lot of people reading the content. This means you will need to work hard to get people to know your website or app.

<h3>3. Create content and ask people to pay to access it. Web or WhatsApp</h3>
Advertising is not the only business model for content. You could also ask your readers to pay you to read the content.  This can be done on a website or you could do so using WhatsApp as your means to deliver your content.
I should say though that if you use WhatsApp, as the subscribers to your content increase, it will become difficult to manage everything- payments, delivering content and ensuring that your readers all get a good service. You will have to adapt and consider getting professional services to manage.
To accept payments on the web you could use payment processors like Paypal and membership management like <a href="https://memberful.com/">Memberful.</a>

<h3>4. Make videos that people would like to watch and put them on YouTube</h3>
YouTube is increasingly the way that most people consume content, especially people below 30 years of age. Content ranges from instructional videos, media, music, short film (so-called skits) and even watching games.
The great news is that where, in the past, one had to have good professional video production equipment to get started, this is no longer the case. One can make a video using their phone to get started at least and buy equipment as they go – especially with their audience growing and money starting to come in.
One can make revenue with video in two ways:
<ul>
<li>Get brands to pay you to feature their products in the video</li>
<li>Have YouTube ads show on the content</li>
</ul>
It really doesn’t have to be YouTube, videos can be posted on other platforms too such as SnapChat, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

<h3>5. Work for someone remotely or freelance</h3>
Another opportunity that the internet opened up is working remotely. That and freelancing, which is actually a different thing.
Now that access to the internet is global, there are companies especially in Europe and North America who are actively looking for people to work from them from wherever they are. This means that if you have the skills, you don’t really have to travel to the US anymore to work for a US company, you can work for it remotely from your home.
This is a growing phenomenon and there are now websites dedicated to listing such jobs. Here are the most popular websites:

As you can probably tell imagine, most of such jobs are technology-oriented and generally service type skilled jobs such as Web Developer, App Developer, Designer, Draftsman, Architect, Data. However, there are also Writer, Editor, Digital Marketing, Sales, Legal, and even HR and other such traditional jobs that can now be done remotely.
Some of you may be worried that you don’t have these skills. Who says they can’t be learned. There are many ways to learn a new skill online. Technology jobs especially have many platforms for learning. One such powerful platform is freeCodeCamp. Like I said above, you have to be committed to doing this so you have to be committed to learning a new skill and finding a new job which could pay upwards of US $2,000 a month and even more.
<h3>6. Create something useful</h3>
If you have some skills, you create an app or website that offers a useful service that someone is willing to pay for.
It could be an app helping people solve something in their lives like understanding better how much money they are spending on EcoCash and budgeting better. It could be an app that helps them pass their provisional drivers license. It could be an app that helps them compare prices so that they can always buy from the lowest priced shop near them. It could one that helps them contribute to a good cause near them.
If you don’t have the skills to create the app yourself, you could learn how to (see 5 above) or you could team with someone that knows how to build apps while you focus on other aspects of the business like marketing and strategy.
