A 36-year-old man from Hopely in Harare appeared before the Masvingo Magistrates Court on allegations of defrauding Econet Life trading as EcoSure.
Ecosure is a company that provides funeral assurance cover that entitles a promised amount determined by the Policy Package to be paid out in the event of the death of the Insured.
It is the State’s case that Sylvester Rusere registered for Ecosure Funeral cover and added his daughter and another fictitious daughter as dependents.
From March to April 2024, Rusere allegedly misrepresented that his fictitious daughter Mufaro Rusere had passed on in March 2024 at Mukutukutu Village, Chief Nyashanhu, Buhera. Said the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA):
<blockquote>
To substantiate his claims, the accused person fraudulently fabricated a death certificate for Mufaro Rusere and went to complete all the forms which were supposed to be completed and signed by the Village head.
He convinced his witnesses and obtained copies of their national identity cards. Armed with the fake death certificate and the national identity cards, he proceeded to the Masvingo Econet shop and submitted the documents so that the complainant could process the fraudulent claim.
He completed EcoSure funeral cover claim forms and attached the fake death certificate and national identity cards of the witnesses and falsified the signatures of the witnesses.
The complainant instituted a preliminary investigation to verify the authenticity of the claim and established that the accused person does not have any daughter named Mufaro. A report was made which led to the arrest of the accused person.

Rusere was ordered to pay US$400 or face 6 months imprisonment. In addition, he was sentenced to a wholly suspended 3 months sentence.
His conviction comes just a week after a couple from Chief Nhema’s area in Zaka District, Masvingo Province, was arraigned before the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court for faking their daughter’s death to claim money from Ecosure.
According to the NPA, wife and husband, Rungamirai Machinjike (27) and Talent Rutindingwe (33, were found guilty by the courts and were sentenced to 6 months imprisonment of which 3 months were suspended. The remainder was suspended on condition of 105 hours of community service.

Harare Man Fined US$400 For Defrauding Ecosure

A couple from Chief Nhema’s area in Zaka District, Masvingo Province, was recently arraigned before the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court for faking their daughter’s death to claim money from Ecosure.
Ecosure is a company that provides funeral assurance cover that entitles a promised amount determined by the Policy Package to be paid out in the event of the death of the Insured.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), wife and husband, Rungamirai Machinjike (27) and Talent Rutindingwe (33, were found guilty by the courts and ordered to perform 105 hours of community service each. The NPA said:

The first accused person registered for Ecosure Funeral cover and added the second accused person, her daughter and her cousin as dependents.
During the period extending from November 2023 to December 2023, the accused person misrepresented to Ecosure that their daughter had passed on in November 2023.
In an effort to substantiate their claim, she fraudulently obtained a death confirmation letter from the Headman and identity documents of her witnesses which she gave to her husband to go and process the claim.
The second accused person went on to complete claim forms and attached the fraudulent documents. He signed on behalf of the witnesses.

The matter came to light when Ecosure instituted preliminary investigations to verify the claim’s authenticity and established that the duo had made a false claim.
The company reported the fraud to the police leading to the arrest of the two.
They were sentenced to 6 months imprisonment of which 3 months were suspended. The remainder was suspended on condition of 105 hours of community service.

Couple Fakes Daughter's Death To Defraud Ecosure

EcoSure has launched a funeral plan for civil servants with premiums starting from as low as US$2 per month for an individual.
The package covers the principal member, their spouse, an unlimited number of children, their in-laws, as well as family members above the age of 70.
Speaking during the launch of the funeral plan in Harare on Thursday, Econet Life’s Chief Life and Principal Officer Godwin Mashiri, said:
<blockquote>
We are excited to launch this scheme that is dedicated to Government employees.
The good news is that we are waiving the usual three months waiting period for those with policies elsewhere.
We will also give a ‘one-month-free’ for our hospital cashback plan and offer free tents and chairs in the first three months if a government staff member has a wedding, memorial, funeral, party or any other event.

Mashiri said EcoSure’s Government employees offer comes in four packages. He said:
<blockquote>
These range from just US$2 for an individual, without a tombstone; US$3, with a tombstone, and up to $15 for an unlimited family package, without a tombstone. Then there is an US$18 package, including tombstones.

EcoSure Launches New Funeral Plan For Civil Servants

Ecosure has unveiled a new package called EcoSure Pamwepo/Sisonke for churches and other social groups to have access to affordable insurance cover. The new package will see people who will sign up for the package paying premiums as low as ZWL$50 per person per month with benefits of up to ZWL$500,000.
Speaking about the cover, Cassava Smartech Chief Executive Officer Mr Eddie Chibi said their thrust is to use technology to serve the community:
<blockquote>We continue to look for opportunities to use technology to solve the challenges that our community face. This is why we are launching this package that church members and other social group members will access via a short code on *900# using any type of phone</blockquote>
Econet Life Chief Life and Principal Officer Mr Godwin Mashiri said the package would help the targeted groups give their loved ones a befitting sendoff:
<blockquote>Churches and other social groups now have an option for their members to get affordable funeral cover so that when the unfortunate happens, they get a decent and dignified send-off with no burden on their church/group.</blockquote>
According to Ecosure in an email to Pindula, Ecosure has partnered with the following churches on Pamwepo/Sisonke:
<blockquote>EcoSure has so far partnered with Anglican, Roman Catholic, Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM), Zion Christian Church (ZCC), Salvation Army, United Family International Church (UFIC), Prophetic, Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries and ZAOGA, and has plans to partner with more churches.</blockquote>

EcoSure Launches Pamwepo/Sisonke, Affordable Insurance Cover For Churches And Other Social Groups

EcoSure last week hiked its premium charges owing to changes in the economy, particularly the introduction of a new currency, the RTGS dollar.
Ecosure is an insurance provider under Econet Wireless Zimbabwe. A statement posted on the company’s Twitter page reads as follows:
<blockquote>Our cover benefits and premiums have been reviewed with effect from the 1st of March 2019. EcoSure Lite $1 with a payout of $1,000, EcoSure Basic $2 with a payout of $2,000, EcoSure Standard $4 with a payout of $4,000 and EcoSure Premium $7.50 with a payout of $7,500.</blockquote>
The new pricing regime has been in palce since the first of March 2019.
