Econet says it aims to provide convenience, choice, and flexibility to its customers through this technology. The activation of eSIMs is now available for free in all Econet shops nationwide. The adoption of eSIM technology is part of Econet’s digital transformation strategy and aims to enhance the customer experience. Said Econet in a statement:

Customers can check their device compatibility by dialing *#06# and access their ‘Embedded Identity Document’ (EID). Added Econet:

Econet Wireless Introduces Zimbabwe's First eSIM Service

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the country’s largest mobile network operator by subscriber base, has with effect from Tuesday, 20 June, hiked data bundles.
In a brief notice sent via SMS to its millions of subscribers, Econet said:

We are reviewing our ZWL data and SMEs bundle prices effective Tuesday, 20 June 2023.
</blockquote>
An 8 gig private WIFI data bundle now costs ZWL$111 342 up from ZWL$37 114 while a 15 gig bundle is now available for ZWL$201 033 up from ZWL$67 011.
Econent said a 25 gig will cost ZWL$294 675 from ZWL$98 225 and 50 gig users will have to pay ZWL$506 106 up from ZWL$168 702.
The latest tariff hike by Econet comes as the value of the Zimbabwe dollar has continued to plummet against other currencies at both official and parallel markets.
Some service providers are now devising ways to reject the Zimbabwe dollar such as engaging in forward rating and claiming that their point-of-sale machines are down, leaving customers with no option except to make payments in foreign currency.

Econet In Massive Data Bundle Tariff Hike

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has issued an apology for the network issues that occurred over the past week.
The company’s chief operating officer, Kezito Makuni, stated that the problems were caused by power outages at their National Operations Centre (NOC) in Harare.
He added that the issues have been fully resolved, and the company regrets any inconvenience caused to their customers. Makuni said:

We sincerely regret the challenges that our customers experienced over the past week, which were precipitated by power outages at our National Operations Centre (NOC) in Harare. 
The power outages, which unfortunately and uncharacteristally occurred twice – last Tuesday afternoon (May 9, 2023) and later in the week on Friday evening (May 12, 2023) –  triggered multiple failures on our voice, SMS, EcoCash, mobile data, VAS (third-party value added services) and on our recharge platforms, resulting in customers failing to access these services.
The Tuesday downtime, which lasted for about 5 hours, did not affect mobile data services. Unfortunately, when we suffered the second power outage on Friday – which brought down our backup power units – that is when most of our customers struggled to access our mobile data services, with the problem finally being resolved on Monday this week.
Regrettably, it took our engineers and vendors (equipment suppliers) much longer than anticipated, even as they worked around the clock, to resolve the challenges because it involved replacing some imported, damaged equipment and reconfiguring the nodes to enable resumption of normal service.
We have since moved to deploy additional backup power and monitoring equipment as well as additional redundancy on our NOC to further reduce the chances of the incidents which took place over the past week from recurring.

Makuni confirmed that their service platforms are now stable and being monitored to maintain a normal customer experience.
He apologised to Econet’s customers for the inconvenience and assured them that the company takes its responsibility of facilitating their businesses and relationships seriously.
The impact of Econet network failure in Zimbabwe can be significant, as Econet is the largest <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">mobile network operator</a> in the country.
Network failures caused disruptions in communication and connectivity, affecting businesses, individuals, and emergency services. This can lead to financial losses, missed opportunities, and in some cases, even a threat to health and safety. 
Due to the network outage experienced by Econet, other mobile network operators, particularly NetOne, gained customers. This led to an increase in the prices of <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">SIM cards</a> sold by vendors, from the official price of $1 to $3.

Econet Wireless Apologises For Network Issues In Past Week

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is set increases voice, Data, and SMS tariffs and bundle prices with effect from 20 April 2023.
Econet, which is by far the country’s largest mobile network operator (MNO) by subscriber base, has notified its customers about the impending tariff adjustment.
A notice published on the company’s social media pages this Wednesday reads:

Dear Customer, This serves to notify you of the planned changes on our Voice, Data, and SMS Tariffs and Bundles Prices effective Thursday, 20 April 2023.

This comes after the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) approved tariff increases in February and April.
State-owned mobile network operator NetOne increased tariffs on 7 April 2023.
Telecommunications companies in Zimbabwe face various challenges that affect their operations and profitability.
These include a complex and often unpredictable regulatory environment, high inflation rates, currency fluctuations, shortages of foreign currency, frequent power outages, and fraud and cybercrime which has led to financial losses.

Econet Announces Planned Tariffs Hike

Zimbabwe’s richest man <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Strive_Masiyiwa">Strive Masiyiwa</a> is now among the world’s top 20 black billionaires following a strong rebound in his net worth since the beginning of 2023.
Masiyiwa’s net worth dropped by $1.5 billion last year, but it has now rebounded due to an increase in the share prices of his publicly traded companies on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE), specifically <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Econet_Wireless_Zimbabwe">Econet Zimbabwe</a> and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/EcoCash">EcoCash Holdings</a>.
According to Forbes, Masiyiwa has seen his net worth increase by $800 million since the start of 2023 from $1.2 billion at the start of the year to $2 billion as of April 5, <a href="https://billionaires.africa/2023/04/05/strive-masiyiwa-zimbabwes-wealthiest-man-bounces-back-with-800-million-net-worth-increase/">Billionaires Africa</a> reported.
The strong rebound in his net worth cements his position as one of Africa’s richest billionaires and also one of the world’s 19 Black billionaires.
Masiyiwa’s billion-dollar fortune comes partly from owning a 52.85% share in Econet Zimbabwe, which is the top telecommunications service provider in the country, and a 30% share in EcoCash Holdings, a company that offers mobile money transfer services.
Through his interest in Econet Global Limited, a diversified telecom group with operations and investments in Africa, Europe, South America, and the East Asia-Pacific Rim, the Zimbabwean billionaire also has a $145 million stake in Liquid Intelligent Technologies.
Since the beginning of the year, the share price of Econet Zimbabwe had risen by 160.37 per cent, from ZWL96.28 ($0.30) on January 1 to ZWL250.68 ($0.78) as of April 5.
The share price of EcoCash Holdings had increased by 69.55 per cent, from ZWL40.081 ($0.12) to ZWL67.96 ($0.21) as of April 5.

"Econet - Ericsson Partnership To Deliver High Network Connectivity In Zimbabwe"

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has strengthened its partnership with Ericsson as it embarks on a network upgrade to deliver 5G connectivity in more locations across Harare.
In a <a href="https://www.ericsson.com/en/press-releases/1/2023/econet-partners-ericsson-to-modernize-network-infrastructure-in-zimbabwe">Press release</a>, Ericsson said the partnership with Econet aims to boost digital transformation through the evolution of the existing network to cloud native architecture. It said:

Econet Partners Ericsson to Modernise Network Infrastructure Across Zimbabwe

Telecoms giant, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Econet_Wireless_Zimbabwe">Econet Wireless Zimbabwe</a>, has appointed Mr Chengeto Moyo as its new financial director effective from 1 March 2023.
In a recent statement, Econet said the appointment will take effect on March 1, 2023. Reads the statement:

We would like to congratulate and wish Chengeto well in his new role.

Moyo joined the Econet Group on 1 November 2008 as chief finance officer focusing on operational excellence.
 He worked in the mining, financial services, tourism, and FMCG sectors prior to joining the telecommunications industry.
Econet said Moyo also operated at an executive level in strategic planning and has been instrumental in remodelling businesses into profit-making through cost optimization programmes.
Moyo holds BAcc (Honors) from the University of Zimbabwe, Masters in Business Leadership (UNISA), and is a qualified chartered accountant (Zimbabwe) and has served Articles of Clerkship with Deloitte and Touche.

Econet Has Appointed A New Financial Director

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (EWZ) says recurrent power cuts have negatively affected the quality of services that the company offers.
The mobile network operator (MNO) says it will increase investment in alternative energy, such as solar batteries and diesel-powered generators though this requires significant amounts of foreign currency.
In a statement accompanying the firm’s trading update for the third quarter to November 2022, EWZ company secretary, Charles Banda said:

Due to the unreliable national power grid, the business continues to invest in alternative power solutions in a bid to ensure network availability.
As green energy solutions such as solar and battery storage require significant foreign currency investment, the pace of investment has remained below desired levels, thereby impacting service quality.
The business has also had to continue investing in diesel engine generators in the face of sharp declines in available grid power.

Most base stations (boosters) run on electricity but of late, MNOs have been forced to rely on diesel generators due to load-shedding and this has increased the cost of doing business.

Load Shedding Affecting Network Availability - Econet

The government of Zimbabwe has been urged to use individuals who are illegally growing <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mbanje">mbanje (marijuana /dagga/ cannabis/ hemp)</a> to launch “viable out-grower schemes” as cases of unlawful cultivation of the plant continue to be reported.
Mukudzei Maidza, an Account Executive at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Econet_Wireless_Zimbabwe">Econet Zimbabwe</a>, says the illegal farmers could do more with support from the government. 
His remarks came after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) had reported the arrest of Marian Paradza (39) at Buhle Village, Mberengwa, in connection with the unlawful cultivation of 83 plants of dagga measuring between 1m and 2.5m.
In a response seen by Pindula News, Maidza said:

Unlawful Mbanje Cultivation: "Viable Out-grower Scheme Can Be Developed Using These Guys"

Zimbabwe’s largest mobile network operator (MNO) by Subscriber Base, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, has increased tariffs and bundle prices with effect from 1 January 2023.
In a public notice, Econet said the adjustment is to accommodate the 0.5 percent value-added tax (VAT) increase that came into effect on 1 January. Econet said:

Please take note that our tariffs &amp; bundle prices have been adjusted in line with VAT changes gazetted in the Finance Act (No.2), 2022 effective 1 Jan 2023.
</blockquote>
In his 2023 national budget statement, Finance and Economic Development Minister, Mthuli Ncube increased VAT from 14.5 percent to 15 percent.
Ncube said the country’s VAT rates of 15 percent are comparatively lower than the SADC regional standard VAT rate, which averages 16 percent.

Econet Increases Tariffs And Bundle Prices

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Econet_Wireless_Zimbabwe">Econet Wireless</a> has launched its annual Christmas promotion, with over US$375 000 worth of prizes to be won.

Econet Launches Christmas Promotion With Over US$375 000 Worth Of Prizes

Econet Wireless, which is the country’s leading telecommunications company, says it will review voice, data and SMS prices in both Zimbabwe dollars and US dollars with effect from 16 November 2022.
In a notice to its customers issued this Monday, 14 November, Econet said:

Responding to social a media user who had asked why the telecoms company was increasing prices in USD considering that the greenback is a stable currency, Econet said:

On 1 November 2022, Econet increased its headline tariffs but did not adjust the cost of its promotional bundles.
Since the start of this month, Econet customers have been paying $41.77 per minute, to make a voice call, up from $25.95.
Data charges also went up to $6.6 per MB, up from $4.1 per MB, while sending an SMS was now costing $8.59 per message, up from $5.33.

Econet Wireless To Raise Tariffs Effective 16 November 2022

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Econet_Wireless_Zimbabwe">Econet</a> has introduced Machine-to-machine (M2M) technology that is premised on boosting agricultural output by enabling farmers to monitor their crops using sensors.
The M2M also allows farmers to remotely track and manage of their tractors, combine harvesters and other farming equipment. Farmers only need to install a device with a global subscriber identity module on site.
Farmers can install sensors in the fields to monitor soil, water, light, humidity, and temperature conditions remotely, using their mobile phones.
When the sensors are combined with smart irrigation systems, crops are only irrigated when they need to be watered, delivering substantial benefits for both water use efficiency and increased yield.
Econet’s M2M technology can also be used to transform water billing systems with the advent of smart metering, which will allow municipalities in the country to digitise their processes.
For water utility and transportation companies, smart meters provide multiple benefits, including leak detection, energy reduction, and demand forecasting, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/branding-voice/article/200003317/many-industries-set-to-benefit-from-econets-machine-to-machine-technology">NewsDay</a> reported citing the head of Econet’s Business Solutions (EBS) unit, Dr Jimmy Shindi.
Smart meters can provide customers with information on when and where water is being used, comparisons of their own water use against other customers, and quick leak detections.
Shindi said the introduction of smart meters will be a huge milestone for the local municipalities that are struggling with revenue collections, thus affecting operations. He said:

Econet Wireless, which is the country’s leading telecommunications company increased its headline tariffs effective from 1 November 2022.
The company, however, said the cost of its promotional bundles remains unchanged for now.
Econet customers will now pay $41.77 per minute, to make a voice call, up from $25.95.
Data charges have gone up to $6.6 per MB, up from $4.1 per MB, while sending an SMS will not cost $8.59 per message, up from $5.33.
Econet spokesman, Fungai Mandiveyi, told NewsDay that the new price review will help it to invest in the network and improve the quality of service to its customers. Said Mandiveyi:

Motivational speaker<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Joshua_Maponga"> Joshua Maponga</a> has criticised Zimbabwe’s richest man, Strive Masiyiwa, over “poor service” by his <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Econet_Wireless_Zimbabwe">Econet Wireless</a>.
Maponga said if Masiyiwa does not need the telecommunications business any longer and has made enough money, he must give it to younger brains.
Econet Wireless is the largest mobile telephone network, in Zimbabwe.
In a video clip, Maponga said Econet has become a big black cow that is eating grass in Africa and “you are busy milking it in Europe”. Maponga, a former <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Seventh_Day_Adventist_Church">Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA)</a> pastor said:

Econet subscribers have on several occasions complained over “poor network” and “very high” tariffs.
Econet blames poor networks on technical glitches, power cuts and fuel shortages.

Joshua Maponga Criticises Masiyiwa Over Econet's "Poor Service"

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> has announced the arrest of one Simbarashe Tomu who was found in possession of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/TelOne">TelOne</a> copper cables near Mupfurudzi Tollgate, Madziwa.
Copper theft is not a new phenomenon but state companies and market players in Zimbabwe say it has surged in recent years.
In a statement, seen by Pindula News, police say Tomu was apprehended by a motorist who brought the man to the police station. Said police in a statement:

On 19/03/22, Police in Madziwa arrested Simbarashe Tomu who was found in possession of 45 metres of Telone copper cables. The suspect was brought to the Police station after he was apprehended by an alert motorist who noticed him rolling the cables near Mupfurudzi Tollgate.

<h2>Why is this important:</h2>
<blockquote>
1). Cable theft has become a form of organised crime whose impact on businesses, communities, and the economy at large is alarming.
2). It affects the electricity, telecommunications and transport sectors, and each year Zimbabwe’s parastatals spend millions of dollars replacing stolen cables and restoring vandalised infrastructure due to cable theft. 
3). In a recent statement, it was revealed that <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZESA">ZESA</a>, the local power utility, lost US$256 million in stolen materials, additional millions in replacement infrastructure and in security mitigation for the same period.
4). There is little doubt that copper cable theft has grown into a pandemic in Zimbabwe, particularly for the electricity, telecommunications, and railway parastatals.
5). Organisations such as Zesa, TelOne, Econet, Telecel, NetOne, and the National Railways of Zimbabwe tell tales of loss of business due to the effects of copper cable theft that has been spreading uncontrolled.
6). Households too are affected as they are left to spend days without power and sometimes asked to pull resources together for the purchase of copper cables.

i). The biggest driver of cable theft is the demand for copper, a commodity that has played a crucial role in global industrialisation. It is still an essential component for infrastructure across many industries, including telecommunications.

Cable theft has multiple players involved from petty criminals on the ground, who dig up the copper cables and extract them to sell to dealers, to more sophisticated and organised structures, syndicates involving professionals (even workers of respective companies) and those who even take down the cables from power lines.

1). It is suspected most of the stolen cables are being smuggled to South Africa and they are then shipped further to countries that use the metal in the construction and manufacturing industries.
2). Some Zimbabwean scrap dealers buy stolen copper, melt it down, turn it into ingots and granules, which do not require scrap export permits or remove identifying markers.

According to the publication, Masiyiwa, who has close to 5 Million followers on the social site, is ranked higher in terms of his followership, his interactions and the growth of his engagement and reach. 
In 2019, Masiyiwa and his wife, Tsitsi, quit Twitter and later suggested that some users of the microblogging site were posting fake news. He said:

Econet Global which I own, decided to move shares into another company, which I also own. I own both companies 100%. It has nothing to do with the listed companies! Our accountants were simply doing some housekeeping.

State-owned mobile network operator, NetOne, has announced that it will be reviewing its bundle and headline tariffs with effect from 30 November 2021. Said the telecommunications giant in a statement:

This is happening as other players in the telecoms sector have in the recent past also reviewed their tariffs.

NetOne Reviews Tariffs On 30 November 2021

The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) Friday stopped Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe Limited from trading on the bourse after an application by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe for the diversified technology group to be suspended.
In a statement yesterday, ZSE chief executive Justin Bgoni said the application for Cassava’s suspension was a result of the company’s failure to publish financial statements for the year ended February 28, 2021. Bgoni said:

The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange Limited (“ZSE”) notifies the investing public that trading in the securities of Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe Limited will be halted with effect from October 1, 2021.
The halt in trading of the issuer’s securities has been effected pending the outcome of an application for the suspension of trading in the issuer’s securities which was filed for consideration by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe.
 Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe Limited failed to publish audited financial statements for the financial year ended February 28, 2021 and remains in default.
</blockquote>
He pointed out that in terms of section 40(1)(d) of the Listing Requirements, Statutory Instrument 134 of 2019, the ZSE is obliged to suspend an issuer who fails to publish audited financial statements for a period of seven months after the end of a financial year. Bgoni added:

Once an application for suspension has been approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission, it can only be lifted when an issuer has published its audited financial statements.

In a statement after the announcement by the ZSE, Cassava, which is owned by Zimbabwe’s billionaire businessman Strive Masiyiwa, said it would publish its results by October 18, 2021, and attributed the delay to publish to the need to resolve “certain technical accounting” matters.

Telecommunications giant, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, has announced a partnership with Swedish multinational network player, Ericsson, to implement the latter’s Learning Services Digital Platform for Econet’s employees.
Under the new deal, Econet will have access to Ericsson’s premium e-learning content service, ‘All Access Plus’, which enables Econet to utilize the Learning Services Digital Platform, thereby, ensuring unlimited access to Ericsson’s eLearning content available in the global Ericsson training library.

Econet Deputy CEO Wins Top ICAZ Award

The Sunday Times Rich List has named Zimbabwean-born telecommunications tycoon, Strive Masiyiwa as the United Kingdom (UK)’s first black billionaire.
Masiyiwa who sits on the boards of Netflix and Unilever is the founder and owner of Econet Wireless Group which now operates in Africa, Europe, South America and the East Asia Pacific Rim.
He left Zimbabwe for South Africa around 1999 where he lived before moving to London in 2010 and has lived in the capital ever since.
Masiyiwa faced resistance from the Zimbabwean government then led by Robert Mugabe – who died in 2019 – when he tried launching Econet but he eventually registered the telecoms company in 1998.
It is believed that the government intended to launch its own mobile network operator, NetOne, therefore, authorities feated Econet would be a strong competitor.
Masiyiwa who is also a philanthropist, also owns a number of high profile properties in New York, including two adjacent apartments atop the 29-storey Eldorado Tower – which have been at various points home to stars such as Michael J. Fox, Moby and Alec Baldwin.
He bought the two properties for $24.5million in 2016.
Masiyiwa is also known for philanthropic work he implements through Higherlife Foundation which he founded together with his wife Tsitsi.
The foundation pays school fees for some 40 000 students in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Burundi and Lesotho who are either orphaned or from low-income families.
He has provided scholarships to more than 250,000 young Africans over the past 20 years through his family foundation.
The couple also established the Ambassador Andrew Young Scholarship, which enables African students to attend the Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, US.
In 2014, Fortune Magazine named Masiyiwa as one of the 50 most influential business leaders in the world.
He made the Forbes billionaire sheet in 2018, with his total worth then estimated to be around $2.3billion.
This month is the time Masiyiwa has been listed on the Sunday Times Rich List as a billionaire.
Having graduated from a private school in Edinburgh Scotland in 1978, he went back to his country of birth, intending to join the anti-government guerilla forces to liberate Zimbabwe from colonial rule.
Strive was, however, advised by senior officers that they were about to win the war and needed people like him to help build the country prompting him to return to school in Britain where he would graduate with a degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Wales in 1983.

Strive Masiyiwa Named The UK's First Black Billionaire

Undertakers on Sunday damaged TelOne line in Warren Park Cemetery while digging graves leaving TelOne disconnected.
TelOne said they had to engage Harare City Council in an endeavour to repair the damaged line and were given the go-ahead. An anonymous official at the telecommunications company said:
<blockquote>On Sunday, in Warren Park Cemetry, a grave was allocated on top of our network line. Undertakers damaged our cables when they were digging.
They buried the deceased. We discovered on Monday that the fault was in the Cemetry and engaged authorities. We started laying new cables.
Unfortunately, since Monday till Wednesday, they were still burying COVID-19 victims near the area where our cables were damaged. Resultatnly, we were sometimes told to vacate the place to avoid contact with their projects.
On Wedneday, We engaged them again and asked for a window period to finish the refurbishment process and they agreed. We hope they won’t chase us again until we finish. We expect to have finished the process anytime soon.</blockquote>
Tel-One is Zimbabwe’s sole fixed telecommunication services provider providing Voice, Internet and Data services and its absence is a huge blow for its customers working from home.
The absence of TelOne services would force customers to look for alternatives including Zol Zimbabwe which is aggressively penetrating the market and or mobile network operators.
Warren Park D area has serious network issues especially when NetOne is not working since other network operators do not have towers which adequately cover the area.

Econet Shops Open For Few Essential Service On 6 Days

Econet Wireless, the biggest mobile operator in Zimbabwe is seeking permission to charge some of its services in foreign currency.
This was revealed by Econet chairman, Dr James Myers, in a statement accompanying the group’s financials for the half-year to August 31, 2020. Myers said:
<blockquote>The business continues to pursue opportunities to receive payment of some of its services in foreign currency.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe last year ended a 10-year tenure of the multicurrency system that had been adopted in 2008 following a record-high 231 million percent hyperinflation.
Through Statutory Instrument (SI) 85 of 2020 issued in March this year, the government removed the ban on the use of all foreign currencies for local transactions.
The use of foreign currency for local transactions was welcomed by the business community which argued that the local currency was fast losing value hence bad for business.
Some argued that the ban on the use of foreign currency was making it hard for them to raise enough forex to purchase goods and services from abroad where the local currency was not accepted.
Econet also announced plans to pursue opportunities available on the local market as well as global trends in its quest to transform from being a communication to a digital services provider.

Econet Seeks For Permission To Charge In USD

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (Econet) this week marginally adjusted its voice bundle tariffs in a bid to guarantee continued delivery of acceptable service to its customers.
The telecommunications giant, which has invested over US$1,3 billion in infrastructure since 2009, told customers in a notice that it would “review its Bundle of Joy voice bundles on Wednesday 25 November 2020”.
However, the popular daily voice bundle – previously pegged at ZW$6.00 or (US$0.07) for two minutes – has been reviewed upwards by only 20 percent – way below the annual inflation rate of 475.21 percent for October 2020.
The latest tariff adjustment comes at a time when the government is banking on increased infrastructure development in the information and communication technologies (ICTs) sector to achieve its Vision 2030 targets.
ICT minister, Jenfan Muswere, last week said that it was critical that the telecommunications sector plays its part in improving Zimbabwe’s digital capabilities, especially with regards to ensuring universal access. He said:
<blockquote>Without a robust ICT sector, it follows that the dream of an all-inclusive and economically vibrant nation remains a pipe dream.
Without access to ICTs, people cannot actively participate in the socio-economic development agenda of the country. Access to ICTs is therefore not a luxury and a preserve for the elite… We need to catch up with technology, in particular 5G, for which we need a road map and strategy, or else we remain digital laggards.</blockquote>
Analysts said for this dream to become a reality, the government must approve cost-reflective tariffs and reduce taxes to allow telecommunication firms to continuously re-invest in their businesses and in the industry.
Economic analyst Francis Mukora said current market economic fundamentals were stifling growth in the country’s high capital-intensive telecoms industry, which constantly requires a steady flow of investments into networks, spectrum, towers and new technology. He said:
<blockquote>Contrary to the popular belief that capital injection into the telecommunications industry is a once-off investment, companies have to constantly pour in money to upgrade networks, pay software licenses, buy fibre, radio, and towers, among other things.
And for the industry to survive there is need for sustainable data, voice and SMS tariffs as well as tax breaks.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe’s telecommunications sector – dominated by Econet, NetOne, Telecel, TelOne and Liquid-ZOL – is reeling from hyperinflation, declining capital expenditure, rising operating costs and stiff competition from over-the-top services, among other challenges.
Economist Victor Bhoroma said the recent increase in electricity charges also negatively affected the delivery of efficient and quality services to customers in the telecommunications industry. He said:
<blockquote>The increase in electricity prices, approved by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority for November 2020, by 50 percent, will undoubtedly have an impact on the prices of goods and services in the market. Prices will increase sharply in Zimbabwean dollars and slightly in United States Dollars.
Households will feel the greatest pinch given the fact that wages have not been adjusted in line with the inflation rate and many are earning below the Poverty Datum Line (PDL) which is around ZW$24 000 for a family of six.</blockquote>
National power utility Zesa Holdings has already increased electricity tariffs by more than 150 percent in the last two months.
Bhoroma, however, said electricity prices have been affected by inflation, with Zesa failing to pay for coal supplies locally and from regional suppliers such as Eskom in foreign currency.
He said it was imperative for ZESA to adjust prices gradually so as to break even or fully fund imports without accruing debt.
Bhoroma added that the tariff has to be cost-reflective at all the times in order to guarantee a stable power supply.
